Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s love of water started at an early age. Born on 11 June,
1910 in Saint-André- de-Cubzac, France, by the age of just four he’d already learned to
swim. Though he was pretty bad at school, he had a gift for understanding mechanical
objects. As a teenager, he bought a movie camera, took it apart to understand how it
worked and then put it back together again. He used it to create home movies.
In 1930, Jacques joined the French Naval Academy and planned to become a pilot,
but three years later he had a car accident and got injured. To regain his power, doctors
suggested that he swim, and during his travels with the French Navy in 1936 a friend
gave him some goggles (护目镜) to help him see underwater. His plans to take to the
sky might have been killed but luckily his eyes were opened to a magical world under
the sea.
In 1950, Jacques got hold of an old British warship and turned it into a research
vessel (船) that he named the RV Calypso. He used it to sail around the world and as a
base for exploring underwater habitats and shipwrecks (遇难船)—from the Antarctic
5
to the Amazon. But he soon realized that to collect money for his research he needed to
get the public interested, so he began writing books and making TV series about his
adventures. He finally won three Oscars for his films.
In the 1960s, Jacques joined in three futuristic projects to build underwater labs,
nicknamed Conshelf I, II and III. And in 1963 he and five other researchers spent 30
days living under the sea! During his many explorations, Jacques began to notice the
harm humans were doing to the sea, so in 1973 he set up the Cousteau Society for the
Protection of Ocean Life.
Jacques spent the rest of his life supporting environmental causes such as banning
(禁止 ) whale hunting. He died in 1997, but will always be remembered for his
pioneering underwater exploration!
24. What opened the door for Jacques to explore the sea?
A. His doctor’s encouragement.
B. His experience of learning to swim.
C. His experience of traveling with the French Navy.
D. His friend’s suggestions.
25. Why did Jacques start to write books?
A. To afford his trip to Britain. B. To follow his dreams of filming.
C. To share his trips with the public. D. To raise money for his research.
26. What did Jacques find when he explored the sea?
A. Humans had harmed the sea a lot.
B. Humans knew little about the sea.
C. Humans did a great job in protecting the sea.
D. Humans should be spending more money on researching the sea.
27. This text is mainly developed by _______.
A. giving examples B. following the time order
C. examining differences D. making comparisons

C
You’d like to connect with an old pal you haven’t talked with for a long time, but
worry the friend won’t be especially happy to hear from you. If worry is what’s
holding you back, new research may encourage you to reach out.
A series of experiments involving nearly 6,000 people revealed that people often
underestimate (低估) how much others in their social circle appreciate an unexpected
interaction, whether it is by phone, text or email, according to a study published in
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
“Often when people cross our minds and we wonder how they’re doing, we
wonder if we should reach out, said the study’s lead author, Peggy Liu, Ph.D.,
associate professor of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh. “I’m
hoping this research removes one of the barriers that might be in the way of people
reaching out.”
In one experiment, Liu and her colleagues asked 100 participants to recall the last
time they reached out to someone in their social circle just to catch up after a long time
without any interactions. Another 100 people were asked to recall a similar situation,
but in this case, they were the ones receiving the phone call, text or email.
The volunteers were then asked to rate on a seven-point scale — ranging from
“not at all” to “to a great extent” — how much the contact had been appreciated. The
researchers found that, on average, receivers rated their appreciation significantly
higher than people who reached out to a buddy (朋友) guessed at how much the friend
appreciated the contact.
“When it’s really surprising, the appreciation gets a real boost,” Liu said. “I think
the common thread through these various findings is that people who are reaching out
do not realize how much others appreciate being on the receiving end.”
The research also suggests that “people often are yearning to connect as much as
you are,” Liu said. “If neither of you takes the first step, that’s a sad outcome. I’m
hoping this research might encourage people to reconnect with their friends.”
28. What concerns may people have about contacting old friends?
A. Friends would ask them how they’re doing.
B. Friends wouldn’t answer the phone.
C. Friends would be displeased.
D. Friends wouldn’t keep their phone number.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The expert advises thinking carefully before contacting old friends.
B. The researchers reach the conclusion by multiple experiments.
C. People should reach out to their friends as often as possible.
D. People’s underestimation may be a means of self-protection.
30. What does the underlined word “yearning” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Eager. B. Hateful. C. Worried. D. Regretful.
7
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To encourage people to connect with everyone.
B. To explain why people are worried about reaching out.
C. To tell people the importance of friendship.
D. To reduce people’s worries about social interaction.
D
A remarkable discovery has changed the way scientists think about the history of
cancer treatment. While many people think of cancer as a disease that affects only
modern-day humans, cancer has been around for thousands of years and new research
shows that humans have also tried to manage it for thousands of years. The study of
two ancient Egyptian skulls (颅骨) held at the University of Cambridge in England has
suggested that ancient Egyptians may have performed surgery to manage cancer.
Professor Edgard Camaros from the University of Santiago de Compostela in
Spain and his team were shocked when they found cut marks and evidence of cancer in
the skulls of two ancient Egyptians dating back up to 4000 years old. While Egyptians
are well known for having excellent medical knowledge and treating a range of
diseases, they had never been known for treating cancer.
The skulls had already been studied in 1963 by other scientists, however, the
technology at that time wasn’t advanced enough to pick up the cut marks of operation
found on the skulls, Professor Edgard Camaros said. It was thanks to a HIROZ Digital
Microscope HR-2016 that scientists spotted surgical cut marks around two cancer
lesions (病变).
One limitation regarding cancer is that there are too few cancer cases on ancient
human remains. The study of disease found in animal and human remains aims to find
out as much as possible about diseases in the past to help our understanding of diseases
now.
Our discipline is limited by the samples we work with, which depends on the
funeral culture of some people as well as the environment in which they were
preserved. Egypt is a great place thanks to its advanced funerary (埋葬的 ) practices
and the dry weather which preserves remains better.
8
32. How did Professor Edgard and his team feel when they found the cut marks?
A. Overjoyed. B. Confused. C. Surprised. D. Disappointed.
33. Why did scientists fail to find the cut marks in 1963?
A. They were too careless. B. They lacked advanced technology.
C. They were in such a rush. D. They had little relative knowledge.
34. What makes Egypt a great place for preservation according to the last paragraph?
A. Its population. B. Its economy. C. Its scenery. D. Its climate.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Cancer Has Been Around for Thousands of Years
B. Ancient Egyptians Had Found a Cure for Cancer
C. Scientists Assumed Causes for Marks on Ancient Skulls
D. Animal and Human Remains Are Well Preserved in Egypt

Anxiety and depression are complex conditions.Everyone can benefit from learning
how to care about our mind. 36
Selfcompassion (自我同情 )
37 This can include feeling like you must be perfect to be accepted. The answer
to perfectionism isn’t letting it all go—it’s self-compassion, which means you are kind
and understanding when faced with personal failures—after all, who ever said you were
supposed to be perfect? How we treat ourselves through the ups and downs of life can
have a huge impact on physical health and mental health.
Social Connection
From the time we were born, we have been needing social connection in order to
grow and succeed. 38 It can be talking to one trusted person about how you’re really
doing or having a visit with any family member or friend. If this feels out of reach, try
making a short list of people who at any point have given you a sense of belonging. 39
9
Exercise
Exercise can be important for preventing depression since having a sedentary (久
坐不动的 ) lifestyle is a risk factor. 40 Another study found that 12 weeks of
exercise at 30 minutes, three to five times per week reduced symptoms by 47%.
So the best approach is: Get whatever support is in reach and care about your
mind based on what works for you.
A. It is important to be kind to yourself.
B. But it doesn’t have to be a big party or an office full of people.
C. Being constantly self-critical is risky for anxiety and depression.
D. It may be vital to understand happiness when we struggle with mood.
E. One study found that 15 minutes a day of exercise can significantly prevent depression.
F. The following behaviors are some key ones linked to prevention of anxiety and depression.

Little Lucy lived in a very poor part of a big city. One day, her class teacher talked
about gifts and how it is much more important to give them than to receive them. She
said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class would remember to give
something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them.
Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and
wondered how she could afford to give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a
week for pocket money, and that didn’t go very far these days. Somehow, she thought,
she would try to buy something for Mother, and Daddy, and brother, and sister, but, oh,
dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma?
The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to
give Grandma just a card. The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the
smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began searching for a card for Grandma
that wouldn’t cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of a cat
on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost her old tabby cat (斑猫) that
she had loved so much. So she bought the card, paying one whole week’s pocket
money for it.
On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased
Grandma was. She said the picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This
gave Lucy an idea. “Someday,” she said to herself, “I’ll buy my granny a real cat. Just
think how happy she’ll be then!”
She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. “Twenty dollars.”
said the man. Lucy’s face fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get
$20? That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks —five whole months!
