V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warming-up (5 minutes)
Greet the students.
Ask a few students about their health conditions or if they have had any health problems recently.
Step 2: Presentation (15 minutes)
Present the tasks in 3a. Ask students to imagine they are the school nurse and a student just had an accident or a health problem. Have them make notes about what he/she should and shouldn't do.
For example:
Accident or health problem: Fell down and hurt the knee.
He/She should: Rest, apply ice, see a doctor if it's serious.
He/She shouldn't: Walk a lot, play sports immediately.
After students finish making notes, ask some of them to share their answers.
Then, present the tasks in 3b. Have students write a conversation between the nurse and the student using the notes in 3a. Remind them to use the questions and phrases provided.
For example:
Nurse: What's the matter?
Student: I fell down and hurt my knee.
Nurse: Are you OK?
Student: No, I don't feel well.
Nurse: You should rest and apply ice. You shouldn't walk a lot or play sports immediately.
Step 3: Practice (15 minutes)
Present the tasks in Self Check.
Have students write different health problems next to the body parts. For example:
Head: headache, fever.
Back: backache.
Tooth: toothache.
Throat: sore throat.
Stomach: stomachache.
Other problems: cold, flu.
Then, have students put the questions and answers in order to make a conversation. For example:
What's the matter?
I hurt myself playing soccer. I have a sore leg.
What should I do?
I think you should see a doctor and get an X-ray.
Oh, that doesn't sound good.
OK, thanks. I'll do that now.
Finally, have students write advice for the given people. For example:
Problem: Alan cut himself. Advice: Clean the cut and put a bandage on it.
Problem: Cindy has a headache. Advice: Take some medicine and rest.
Problem: My cousins have bad colds. Advice: Drink plenty of water and stay in bed.
Problem: Jack hurt his back playing volleyball. Advice: See a doctor and follow the doctor's advice.
Step 4: Production (5 minutes)
Ask students to work in pairs. One student acts as the patient and the other acts as the nurse. They have a conversation based on a made-up health problem.
After a few minutes, ask some pairs to act out their conversations in front of the class.
Step 5: Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this lesson.
Assign homework: Ask students to write a short passage about a health problem they have had or someone they know has had, and what they did or should do.
