Three years ago, Sather Gowdy, a student at Gonzaga University, went through a break-up. Then two of his close friends passed away. So Sather withdrew, avoiding going out.
Everything changed one day as Sather was returning home from class. An elderly woman, standing by her open trunk full of groceries, asked him to help her. He helped her get them inside. “Walking home, I realized my heart feeling lighter for the first time in weeks,” Sather says. He made a decision not to close himself off, but perform kindness every day for his community.
Sather starts small. He once noticed his neighbor’s fence was damaged and wanted to fix it, but he didn’t know how. “Lack of knowledge didn’t stop me!” he says. “I learned online, bought a hammer and some nails, and repaired it.” As the movement has grown, so have Sather’s responsibilities. He dedicates several hours each day to finding ways to serve others— cleaning up the community or assisting elderly neighbors with yard work and other tasks.
“Serving others isn’t always fun,” Sather says. “It’s hard work to remain committed to spreading kindness through serving others. But even on the toughest days, seeing the smiles on my neighbors’ faces makes it worthwhile.”
“Think of something that everyone complains about and then go do it” Sather recommends. An alley near his house, for example, was constantly filled with trash. Neighbors talked about how much they hated it, yet no one did anything about it. Sather spent several hours daily for two weeks cleaning it.
“When I was done, I saw increased joy and pride in our neighborhood,” Sather says. Seven months later, the alley is still clean. Sather often sees neighbors checking on it, picking up lingering garbage or cutting back weeds. “Start small. You’ll be amazed at your impact,” says Sather.
24. What pulled Sather out of the state of being separate?
A. The positive impact of the class on him.
B. The elderly lady’s practical suggestions.
C. The timely kindness from the community.
D. The sense of achievement from being helpful.
25. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. How Sather felt about his behaviour.
B. How Sather helps the community.
C. Why Sather finds ways to serve others.
D. What Sather needed to fix his neighbor’s fence.
26. What can we learn from Sather’s story?
A. Doing good starts with ourselves.
B. Work together to help the elderly.
C. Being proud helps to serve others.
D. Help others to make them stronger.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. His search for the simplest joy
B. His pursuit of the community’s happiness
C. He healed his pain with acts of kindness
D. He changed the community with his efforts
C
When people talk about suddenly remembering old memories, the memories they' re referring to are usually episodic(情景的)memories. As the name suggests, this type of memory stores the scenes of our life.
Another type of memory that can also be suddenly remembered is semantic memory. Our semantic memory is the storehouse of our knowledge, containing all the facts we know.
Usually, the recall of episodic and semantic memories has easily identifiable triggers(诱因) in our context. Context includes our physical surroundings as well as the aspects of our mental state, such as thoughts and feelings. For example, you're eating a dish at a restaurant, and its smell reminds you of a similar dish your mom used to make. This is episodic memory. When someone says the word “Oscar”, the name of the movie that won the Oscar recently flashes in your mind. That belongs to semantic memory.
These memories had obvious triggers in our context, but sometimes, the memories that flash in our minds have no identifiable triggers. They seem to flash across our minds out of nowhere; therefore, they've been called mind—pops(闪念).
Mind-pops shouldn't be confused with insight, which is the sudden pop ping up of a potential solution to a complex problem in the mind. Thus, mind— pops are semantic or autobiographical memories that suddenly flash in our minds without an easily identifiable trigger.
Mind—pops may comprise any piece of information, be it an image, a sound, or a word. They're often experienced by people when they're engaged in mundane tasks like mopping the floor or brushing teeth. Such ordinary and unexciting routines tend to inspire something in our mind. For example, you're reading a book, and suddenly, the image of your school corridor pops into your mind for no reason. What you were reading or thinking at the time had no connection to your school.
I do experience mind—pops from time to time. But when I tried to look for cues in my context that may have triggered my mind—pops, I would fail. Maybe such mind—pops are completely random.
28. Which of the following might be episodic memory?
A. You predict a heavy rain is on the way.
B. A good idea flashes into your mind suddenly.
C. A song reminds you of your middle school graduation.
D. You think of a round shape when hearing the word “circle”.
29.What is a feature of mind—pops?
A. They have obvious triggers.
B. They come out without warning.
C. They appear in the form of images.
D. They often bring long—lasting memories.
30.What does the underlined word “mundane” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Careful. B. Dull. C. Necessary. D. Challenging.
31.What is the aim of this passage?
A. To explore human inner thoughts. B. To point out the memory formation.
C. To distinguish different memory scenes. D. To explain some similar memory phenomena.
D
You have probably heard of the Fermi Paradox (费米悖论). Given the high probability that alien (外星人) life exists out there in the universe, why has nobody got in touch yet?
Answers to the paradox range from the optimistic to the downright frightening. It could be that we simply haven’t sent out our own traceable signatures for aliens to find us yet. Or it could be that no aliens will ever make it to the point where they are able to make contact with other species.
In Three Body Problem, Cixin Liu’s science fiction, he describes the universe as a dark forest, where each alien society is like a fearful, armed hunter cautiously moving forth. If that hunter finds other life, he is left with the safest course of action: to wipe out any other lifeforms before they can do the same to him.
Being fearful contributes to humans’ development. Our caution may save our lives when facing a genuine threat. “Take the initiative in the competition, and you may sleep more securely while getting extra resources,” says Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer.
Thankfully, the Dark Forest has lots of issues that are difficult to resolve—the most obvious being that it’s extremely difficult to hide a technologically advanced world. “We’ve never given the slightest thought to turning off all the radars (雷达) and going completely silent because it might be dangerous,” says Shostak.
The forest theory also falls apart when you consider the true nature of the universe. “The distances between planets are likely to be so vast that the idea that they would feel the need to attack one another seems odd. Even if they fear each other, the expanse means that they wouldn’t likely need to compete for the near-limitless resources,” says Shostak.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Dark Forest theory is a nonstarter. Addressing the holes in the theory requires adding up the terror factor. Suppose that a technological civilization is going from star to star destroying any sign of life whenever planets with life or technology are found. We don’t see them because they’re not there. That’s the really scary thing.
32. What do we know about the Fermi Paradox?
A. It denies aliens’ existence. B. It is studied thoroughly.
C. Its answers vary considerably. D. Its answers are similar.
33. What can be inferred from Shostak’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. Fear is deadly. B. Attacks are risky.
C. Fear dominates humans’ development. D. Attacks has survival value.
34. Which factor challenges the Dark Forest theory according to Shostak?
A. Aliens may not understand human culture.
B. The vastness of space makes conflicts less likely.
C. Advanced civilizations tend to compete for survival.
D. Competition for resources could become more serious.
35. Why does the author make the assumption in the last paragraph?
A. To prove aliens are scary. B. To find holes in the theory.
C. To add to horrible atmosphere. D. To warn us of the potential threat.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had stopped at the Swindon (史云顿 英国城市名)services (服务区) while on my way back to London. As I drove up the slip road, I spotted a man with a backpack and his thumb (拇指) out. I pulled over and lowered the window.
“Which way are you heading?” I asked, “I’m going back to London.”
“Ah, that would be grand,” came his immediate reply. He opened the door and lifted his backpack on to the back seat. “I’m Brendan,” he said with an easy smile and a rich Irish (爱尔兰) tongue. “I was getting a bit desperate. I’ve had my thumb out for a day and half. Nobody seems to stop these days.”
“I haven’t eaten in days,” said Brendan. “I’m trying to get home.”
I’ve always enjoyed picking up hitchhikers. I used to be a motoring journalist and crossed the country in various test cars. Picking up a hiker always made me feel a little less guilty about all the miles I was doing.
As we headed east along the motorway, Brendan told me how he came to be waiting for a lift on that particular evening, and also about the two recent family tragedies (悲剧) that had ruined him and pushed him out of his old life and on to the road.
Brendan told me that he was 52. He laughed a lot and enjoyed his off-grid (不入网的) lifestyle. Until last week, that is, when he’d been mugged (抢劫).
“Three young men in Birmingham took my other pack and it had all my money in it. I’ve been sleeping out since then. I haven’t eaten in days. I’m hoping to get some casual work in London, so I can then get myself home to Ireland.”
It must have been the concept of home that got me, and helping a man who’d clearly had a tough time seemed like the right thing to do.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we were approaching the Heathrow turn-off (希思罗机场岔道), I had an idea.

Text 10 (第20题为总结题) To most people, rock climbing seems crazy. You climb up a steep wall of rock hundreds of feet in the air with only a thin rope holding you. But are the climbers really doing something so dangerous? The truth is that the sport is much safer than it looks. There are fewer serious accidents in rock climbing every year than in football or rugby. That’s because it is not hard to climb safely. Once someone takes measures to climb safely, there is very little risk of equipment failure. (17) However, part of climbing safely involves going with an experienced partner. That way, he can catch your mistakes. Some common mistakes beginners make are tying a rope in the wrong way, (18) ignoring your partner when he is climbing, and not wearing your helmet in areas with loose rock. Choosing the right partner is important, and so is taking a good climbing course when you first learn the sport. That’s because you need to be able to spot bad equipment and understand dangerous climbing conditions. A good course will also teach you how to give first aid. (19) These are all important skills for safe climbing. With that, you can truly begin to enjoy this fun and active sport.
