Skye has been published over the years in print media not just for his photography but also voicing his opinion on conservation in South Africa. For Skye, photography is not just about the competitions entered and won but also the platform, which affords him to create awareness about our natural world and conserve it in the long term.
Here is part of an interview to Skye from the Rational Perspective.
Host: How do you have the ability to see these animals in the wild?
Skye: Well, I’ve been fortunate enough that my parents are so enthusiastic about the wild that it’s just a by-product of me going on adventures with them. It’s something that I have been brought up and something I’ve been fortunate to experience.
Host: How do you take a good picture of a leopard?
Skye: I had been following Limpy (the Leopard) for many years and she holds a special place in my heart. I had grown along with her. For me, the perfect shot is one where I feel as if I’m not really there. It’s one where the animal is comfortable enough to behave as if I’m not there. I like to be in the moment and photograph nature at its most natural.

I was in seat 10F next to the emergency exit. A few minutes after take-off there was a loud explosion. Everybody gasped(倒抽气) and there were a few screams. Then, surprisingly, it went very quiet—everyone was assessing the situation.
It soon became obvious we weren’t going back to LaGuardia Airport and that we were heading for the water. I had to think about what I should do once the pilot landed in the water. ‘You sat in this seat,’ I thought, ‘you’ve got to get this door open.’
At about 300 feet (91.5 meters), I started reading the instructions. There were six steps, and I had just read them two or three times when we hit the water. Fortunately, I’d just read the instructions and managed to get the door open. The wing was sinking lower and lower. I walked out onto it and walked as far along as I could to make room for other people. It was freezing, and nobody had a jacket. Some people were underwater to their waists.
It felt like half an hour before we saw the first ferry, though it could have been only five or ten minutes. I was fourth onto the ferry, and I started helping people onto the boat. To our relief, everyone had survived the crash.
I got through the whole incident by taking it one step at a time: get the door open, throw the door out, figure out if you’re sinking. I just kept on doing that until I reached solid ground. Only then did I go into the men’s room and cry for a few minutes.
4. What did passengers do after hearing a loud explosion?
A. They put on life jackets as instructed. B. They tried to figure what had happened.
C They couldn’t help shouting for help on end. D. They asked the pilot to fly to LaGuardia Airport.
5. Why did the writer open the emergency exit successfully?
A. Because he sat by the emergency exit. B. Because he had an experienced neighbor.
C Because he was once taught how to open it. D. Because he read and understood the instructions.
6. What can we know from paragraph 4?
A. No one got killed in the crash.
B. The crash happened at the end of the trip.
C. The pilot managed to land the plane safely.
D. A ferry came to the rescue the moment the crash happened.
7. Which word best describes the writer?
A. Humorous. B. Generous. C. Organized. D. Expressive.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. C

Addiction to watching seven episodes of Real Housewives or “wasting” the afternoon watching back-to-back classic baseball games isn’t going to damage our brains. In fact, studies suggest that “playing a video game or watching a movie or television show can restore some psychological resources,” says Robin Nabi, PhD, a professor of communication at the University of California.
Though the benefits have yet to be studied long-term and our problems don’t magically disappear once we turn off the screen, rest can reduce stress levels. Giving ourselves permission to enjoy some downtime is also a key part of self-sympathy, which helps prevent anxiety and depression.
“We don’t focus as much on relaxation and playing and enjoyment and fun, and these are such important aspects of being a human being,” says Nabi. “And feeling guilty (内疚的)about activities we enjoy, or criticizing them, can take away the benefits they offer us.”
Therefore, it’s time to embrace our need for pleasure. One big reason to do so is that talking about our common interests, is a way to connect with others. The most important value of a guilty pleasure might just be the bond, You’ll never find those connections if you don’t speak up. So stop apologizing. You might just find that it makes it easier to discover more things you enjoy.
“Lots of the time, guilty pleasure get talked about in terms of genre (类型)” says Nabi. But it can help to think about what you like specifically, she points out. “You probably don’t like all boy bands, so what is it about this particular group and their music? Whatever it is, find your little niche and go for that, And don’t be ashamed of what that is, because clearly it’s doing something for you.”
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By listing examples. B. By providing data.
C. By making a contrast, D. By giving definitions.
9. What does Nabi think of people’s guilty feeling about pleasure?
A. It is normal. B. It is beneficial.
C. It is unnecessary. D. It is confusing.
10. What does the underlined word “niche” in the last paragraph mean?
A. A job someone is responsible for. B. An activity suitable for someone,
C. A pleasure bringing someone guilt. D. A small case someone cares little about.
11. Which of following opinions would the author agree with?
A. Stay away from guilty pleasures. B. Don’t be addicted to entertainment.
C. Develop new hobbies to reduce pressure, D. View our demand for pleasure positively.
【答案】8 A 9. C 10. B 11. D

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段““We don’t focus as much on relaxation and playing and enjoyment and fun, and these are such important aspects of being a human being,” says Nabi. “And feeling guilty (内疚的) about activities we enjoy, or criticizing them, can take away the benefits they offer us.”(Nabi说:“我们不太关注放松、玩耍、娱乐和乐趣,而这些正是作为人类如此重要的方面。而且,对我们喜欢的活动感到内疚或批判,会剥夺它们带给我们的益处。”)”可知,Nabi认为人们对快乐活动的内疚感是不必要的,因为它会削弱这些活动带来的正面效果。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“But it can help to think about what you like specifically, she points out. “You probably don’t like all boy bands, so what is it about this particular group and their music?(但她指出,思考一下你具体喜欢什么会有所帮助。你可能并不喜欢所有的男孩乐队,那么这个特定的乐队和他们的音乐有什么特别之处呢?)”可推测,划线单词指的是适合某人的活动或者某人特别喜欢的活动。选项B“An activity suitable for someone(适合某人的活动)”符合描述。故选B。

Disappointment is a natural human emotion that occurs after a failure. For our young children, this failure can look like not getting the toy they wanted, not being invited to a classmate's birthday party or losing their favourite animal.
It is essential for children's mental health, well-being and overall development that they experience how to deal with disappointment well. But this can be difficult for parents to deal with, particularly around holidays, which are about gift-giving and expectations.
North American culture often mistakenly links love and happiness with material goods such as toys; the Santa story promises magical wish satisfaction. This can cause conflict for parents when children do not get the “right” gift.
On holidays, there’s social and personal pressure to provide happiness and joy to children through material objects, which can be confused with providing the necessities. For parents who do not have the resources to provide the perfect or desired gift, this can cause additional stress, shame, and fear around disappointment. Parents may feel as though they have let down their child and that they have impacted the child's experience or memory of their “special day”.
This is especially true if the child has difficulty with or is learning to manage emotions and expresses disappointment through outbursts. These behaviors can affect parents deeply, often leading them to feel badly about themselves or that the child does not love them.
Changing our focus to giving rather than receiving can help our children develop and appreciate the strength in gratitude. Research has linked gratitude to significant health and wellness benefits such as improving self-esteem, improving sleep and developing empathy.
The other thing to know is that although disappointment feels awful, it is a part of life and is actually a positive and healthy emotion that's central to children's emotional, cognitive and social development throughout their lives.
12. Why is it difficult for parents to handle disappointment on Christmas?
A. Children are easy to have tantrums or sulking.
B. Children often expect too much of their parents.
C. It is the custom to give gifts or show expectations.
D. It is connected with children’s overall development.
13. What is the author’s attitude toward linking love and happiness with material goods?
A. Concerned. B. Unclcar C. Interested. D. Supportive.
14. What does the author feel about changing our focus to giving rather than receiving?
A. It helps children realize the benefits of being grateful.
B. It can help children’s academic development.
C. It can avoid disappointment in life.
D. It is a necessary part of one’s life.
15 What is the best title for the text?
A. What Are the Rights to Give to Your Children on Christmas?
B. What Christmas Can Teach Kids about Disappointment?
C. How We Can Meet Our Children’s Expectations Best?
D. What Harm Disappointment Does to Most Children?
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. B

On a cold winter morning, Olivia was soundly asleep until the phone rang loudly in the living room. She glanced at the clock and saw it was already nine o'clock. Knowing her mother worked a part-time job at a café every Saturday morning,Olivia reluctantly(不情愿地)got out of bed. Assuming her brother Ethan wouldn't hear the phone, she quietly answered it in the living room. To her delight, it was her father, a sailor who rarely returned home due to his tough work at sea. His warm greeting filled her with joy and chased away her sleepiness.
“Good morning, Dad. What's happening? Olivia asked casually. “I've been doing well lately, my dear. Today is your mother's birthday, and I've ordered a cake online. It should arrive at our house in an hour and a half. Don't forget to pick it up,”her father replied.
Upon hearing her father's words, Olivia felt a sense of guilt. How could she have forgotten her mother's birthday? She glanced at the pile of dirty clothes on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn't been cleaned for days. With her mother returning in two hours, Olivia calculated that they had enough time to prepare a surprise for her.
Excited by the thought, Olivia said, “Well, Dad, I'm going to wake Ethan up now. We'll give Mum a pleasant surprise!” She hurried to Ethan's room to share her plan to clean the house. Ethan eagerly agreed and they started their grand cleaning plan immediately. Olivia gathered the clothes from the sofa and soaked them in a basin of water with detergent. After washing them by hand, she gently squeezed out the water and hung them to dry. Meanwhile, Ethan was mopping(拖)the floor with all his might, truly appreciating the hard work his mother did at home. They had just finished cleaning when the delivery boy arrived with the cake.

I got through the whole incident by taking it one step at a time: get the door open throw the door out, figure out if you’re sinking. I just kept on doing that until I reached solid ground. Only then did I go into the men’s room and cry for a few minutes.
4. What did passengers do after hearing a loud explosion?
A. They put on life jackets as instructed. B. They tried to figure what had happened.
C. They couldn’t help shouting for help on end. D. They asked the pilot to fly to LaGuardia Airport.
5. Why did the writer open the emergency exit successfully?
A. Because he sat by the emergency exit. B. Because he had an experienced neighbor.
C. Because he was once taught how to open it. D. Because he read and understood the instructions.
6. What can we know from paragraph 4?
A. No one got killed in the crash.
B. The crash happened at the end of the trip.
C. The pilot managed to land the plane safely.
D. A ferry came to the rescue the moment the crash happened.
7 Which word best describes the writer?
A. Humorous. B. Generous. C. Organized. D. Expressive.

B. It can help children’s academic development.
C. It can avoid disappointment in life.
D. It is a necessary part of one’s life.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Are the Rights to Give to Your Children on Christmas?
B. What Christmas Can Teach Kids about Disappointment?
C. How We Can Meet Our Children’s Expectations Best?

注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为80左右;
