After an ambitious $1.5 billion clean-up project, the Seine River will play a leading role in both the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. Paris’s famous urban river will serve as the stage for the Olympic opening ceremony and, if all goes to plan, as a venue for three swimming events.
What was once a portal to pleasure — Parisians sunbathing and splashing in the river, modeling bikinis in the Seine-fed Deligny pool — has been banned for more than a century because of river traffic and pollution. But that’s set to change.
To demonstrate the river’s safety Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo swam in the river on July 17, ahead of the games. A plunge at the end of June was rescheduled to accommodate elections, Hidalgo said in a press conference. And tests later that month had shown that the river still contained unsafe levels of bacteria, making the mayor’s swim a potential health risk. But organizers remain hopeful the river will stay safe enough for the Olympics to debut a new era for the historic river.
“Our objective is an Olympic legacy,” says Pierre Rabadan, the deputy mayor in charge of sport, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the Seine. “That you and me or whoever happens to be in Paris can swim in the Seine.”
For centuries, the Seine has been a dumping ground for laundry suds, human waste, and animal parts tossed by medieval butchers.
In the 19th century, factory and human wastewater was often discharged directly into the Seine. A revolutionary new Paris sewer system, developed during city planner Baron Haussmann’s seismic urban renewal project throughout the second half of the 19th century was an engineering triumph for Paris, yet toxic for the Seine’s health.
4. What is the Seine River expected to host during the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games?
A. Opening ceremony and three swimming events. B. Cycling events and a marathon.
C. Archery and fencing events. D. Basketball and volleyball matches.
5. Why was the Seine River off-limits for swimming for over a century?
A. Due to frequent floods. B. Due to pollution and river traffic.
C. Due to strong currents. D. Due to ice and snow.
6. What action did Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo take to demonstrate the safety of the Seine River?
A. Held a press conference about the river’s safety. B. Swam in the river on July 17.
C. Conducted a survey of river cleanliness. D. Organized a public event on the river.
7. What historical issue has affected the Seine River’s health?
A. Frequent droughts. B. Sand mining.
C. Overfishing. D. Wastewater discharge.

As much as we like to think about nature embodying balance, the universe is actually filled with imbalance, too. Let’s take the supernova (超新星) for example. Two stars orbit each other. One of the stars is older, called a “white dwarf,” while the other star is a bit younger. Their mutual gravitational interaction (相互引力相互作用) pulls material off the younger star and dumps it onto the surface of the white dwarf. If enough material falls onto the dwarf, the stuff dumped on to the white dwarf begins to “burn”.
If the conditions are right, you always burn up the same amount of material that gets added. If the donor star is dumping too much material onto the dwarf, the burning runs out of control. It consumes not just the new material on the white dwarf’s surface but the whole of the dwarf star itself. So much energy is released so quickly that the star finds itself wildly out of balance. In an instant, it becomes a super-hot ball of unbalanced pressure, BOOM! A supernova is born.
Closer to home, a similar but different kind of process happens in volcanoes. Volcanoes are born when magma (熔岩) from deep in the Earth makes its way slowly to the surface through cracks in the planet’s crust (地壳). The heat from the magma builds up a massive pressure imbalance inside the mountain. It’s that imbalance that drives the BOOM, the volcanic eruption that rips a zillion tons of rocks away and sends ash 15 miles into the sky.
But here’s the thing: Supernova, volcanoes and all those other explosions in the universe are not just awesome sights. They are all essential players in cosmic (宇宙的) evolution. Supernova create a lot of the elements in your body that are essential to life. No supernova, no you. And volcanoes are essential to evolution of the planet, including the cycling of greenhouse gases like CO2 that make Earth habitable. No volcanoes, no you.
8. What does the underlined phrase “the donor star” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. The younger star. B. The older star.
C. The supernova. D. The white dwarf.
9. What factor leads to both the birth of supernovas and volcanic eruption?
A. Hot magma. B. Burning material.
C. Unbalanced pressure. D. Gravitational interaction.
10. What can we learn about the explosions in the universe in the last paragraph?
A. They evolve as players. B. They create human bodies.
C. They are awesome sights. D. They are necessary to life.
11. In which section of a website can you find this passage?
A. Profile. B. Science. C. Health. D. Economy.

At Countryside High School in Clearwater, Fla. , 16-year-old Sage Waite is already taking a class in cybersecurity, and she’d welcome one that’s in the works on cyber disinformation.
“For the longest time, I didn’t actually know what disinformation was,” said Waite, who’s in the 11th grade. “There was always the idea that things could be wrong in what you’re hearing and what you’re being told. But the idea of misinformation and disinformation wasn’t in my day-to-day.” This past year, she says, has been an eye-opener. “My friends and I definitely started looking into stuff more and doing more research after that,” she said.
A new program on “digital literacy,” with a focus on topics like disinformation, is in the pipeline, thanks in part to Mike McConnell, who is now working to fight false information aimed at young people. “We need to understand this so we can appreciate what's happening to us, and be able to not only understand it, but also to navigate through it,” McConnell said. “That’s what I call digital literacy.”
McConnell is executive director of Cyber Florida, which is based at the University of South Florida in Tampa. The group works with kids throughout the state at universities, high schools, and even those in younger grades. Cyber Florida helped set up the cybersecurity program now being taught at many Florida schools. The new project, Cyber Citizenship, is even more ambitious. “We think if we can do this for Florida, we can spread it across the nation,” he said.
The expanded program now in the works aims to make digital literacy something all Florida students get, at several grade levels, before they finish high school.
There’s no date yet for the cyber disinformation classes in Florida, but computer teacher Jason Felt says it can’t come soon enough and he is ready to embrace it.
“The Internet is a wonderful tool. It’s connected us in a way that’s never really been seen before. But it’s a blessing and it’s also a curse.”
Teaching students the difference, he says, is a huge challenge.
12. What can we learn about the class that Sage Waite is taking from the first two paragraphs?
A. It receives a cold welcome. B. It aims to form a bond.
C. It focuses on technologies. D. It has a positive impact.
13. What is digital literacy according to MeConnell?
A. The specific strategies for protecting privacy. B. The inborn capacity to track fake information.
C. The general skills of maintaining cybersecurity. D. The overall ability to handle online information.
14. What is the vision of Cyber Citizenship?
A. To outperform Cybersecuritiy. B. To take the lead in the world.
C. To reach a wider range of students. D. To make a substantial profit.
15. What is Jason Felt’s attitude towards the cyber disinformation classes?
A. Welcoming. B. Unclear. C. Opposed. D. Prejudiced.

This Friday brought a mix of emotions—both excitement and disappointment — all because of a flyer from school. When I got home, Mum saw the flyer in my hand and asked, “What’s this?”
“A flyer for a five-day art camp,” I explained. “But Emily can’t go.”
“Would you like to attend?”Mum asked. “You’ve always loved art.” Her words reminded me of what Emily had said earlier: “Tessa, you’re the real artist. My brother thought the roses I painted were rocket ships.” I sighed. Mum patted my back. She knew I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around. “Maybe next year.”
“Maybe,” I echoed. Then I told Mum I wanted to go outside to draw the Westons’ pine tree (松树). She nodded with an encouraging smile.
As I walked into the bright sunshine, I couldn’t help but think about the art camp. I wished I felt a little bit braver. Emily could make friends with a whole bus of kids in ten minutes, but my stomach felt like a little boat tossed in a heavy storm when I was surrounded by strangers... By the time I started drawing, I had made up my mind to forget about the art camp.
I began by drawing the pine tree’s strong and straight trunk, and then added the beautiful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently towards the sun. Lost in my work, I jumped when I heard Mr. Weston speak up, “You’ve done a great job showing the strength of that tree on paper.”
“Thanks,” I smiled, glancing up.
As I drew the needles to the branches Mr. Weston told me something I never knew about pines: If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree dies. Their roots grow out, not down—to get enough water and grow tall.
“You have a good eye, Tessa.”With these words, Mr. Weston nodded goodbye.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
