White Sands National Park, New Mexico This national park in New Mexico is home to the largest area of gypsum sand dunes (沙丘) , making it a truly otherworldly destination in our own backyard. The sand may look like snow, but it can definitely get hot out there. Bring water and a sled (雪橇) , because it’s a popular place for sledding. Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, Colorado From some angles, you would think you’re in the middle of the Sahara while walking through the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in Colorado. But if you simply find a place with a good view, you can spot the beautiful Rocky Mountain. Occasionally, the nearby Medano Creek will overflow and create a sort of natural “water slide” that makes this usually dry area extra fun. The park is home to wetlands, lakes, and forests, in addition to sand dunes. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida Even though it’s one of the least-visited national parks in the country, it’s definitely one of the best national parks in Florida. Located about 70 miles from Key West, this park is made up of several islands that feature blue waters, white-sand beaches, colorful marine life, and one of the largest 19th-century forts (城堡) in the US. The only way for anyone to access the park is by boat or seaplane, but the trip is well worth it. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah If you’re looking for interesting red and pink rocks, you can’t miss this national park, which is known for its fascinating rock, as well as its gorgeous starry (布满星星的) skies at night. 1. What can you do in the White Sands National Park? A. See pink rocks. B. Sled on the sand. C. Swim in blue waters. D. Climb high mountains. 2. In which park can you visit an old castle? A. White Sands National Park. B. Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve. C. Dry Tortugas National Park. D. Bryce Canyon National Park. 3. Where can you find the text? A. In a science magazine. B. In a biology textbook. C. In a travel brochure. D. In a historical novel. B A man named Randy liked to look for big trees and old trees. He made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. He wanted people to take care of them. Randy was told that there was a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy started to find the tree. But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger (伐木工). Loggers wanted to cut down Canada’s tallest tree and all the trees around it. Randy made a path in the forest so people could see the tallest tree. The tree was so big and beautiful that it would bring them enjoyment. More and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada’s tallest tree is still there. 4. Why did Randy make maps of big trees and old trees? A. To carry out his duty carefully. B. To avoid getting lost in forests. C. To show where these trees were. D. To get information for selling them. 5. What did the loggers want to do to Canada’s tallest tree? A. Take care of it. B. Cut it down. C. Take pictures of it. D. Make it famous. 6. Why did Randy make a path to the tallest tree in Canada? A To help people cut it. B. To help people see it. C. To help people water it. D. To help people move it. 7. What do we learn about the forest with Canada’s tallest tree? A. It is now a park. B. People burned it down. C. It will disappear soon. D. People lost interest in it. C There is one language that is used in every country in the world. The people who use it are young and old, short and tall, thin and fat. It is everybody’s second language. It is easy to understand, although you can’t hear it. It is sign language. When you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you nod to someone, you are saying, “I want to be friendly.” But you are not using speech; you are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class, you are saying, “Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer.” Babies who can’t talk can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop traffic holds up his hand. He is using sign language. Many years ago, a French priest, Charles Michel de L’Epee, became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet, which is still in use today. People can make signs for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. There are many universities for the deaf in the US now. The actors in the Theatre of Deaf don’t spell every word. Sometimes they use hand signs. When they put two hands together, it means sandwiches. They can make a roof with their hands when they want to show a house. One finger in front of an actor’s mouth can mean “be quiet”. You can talk to people who are behind windows that are closed. And when you go swimming with your friends, you can have conversations underwater. 8. What can we learn about sign language from paragraph 1? A. It is a language used in a few countries. B. It is a way to express ideas without words. C. It is only used by the deaf. D. It can be easily heard. 9. What will you do if you want to express “I am very friendly.”? A. Raise your hand. B. Put one hand onto the other. C. Nod to the person. D. Make a roof with your hands. 10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Hand signs are more important than finger signs. B. There is only one university for the deaf in the US. C. Charles Michel de L’Epee invented sign language. D. Babies can communicate by using sign language. 11. What is the passage mainly about? A. An introduction to sign language. B. The importance of sign language. C. A famous priest in France. D. How to use sign language. D When it comes to the ocean, you may think of a visit to the beach, whales or coral reefs. To me, I think the ocean is out of expanse of deep dark water and it is filled with life and mystery and opportunity. Whatever you think of, the ocean is much more. It is a complex physical, chemical and biological system that takes up 70% of our planet. What we do know is that the ocean is an important part of our life support system on the planet. It produces at least 50% of the oxygen that we breathe. It also regulates temperature for the planet. Without the ocean, the poles would be unbearably cold and the equator would be unbearably hot. And it would be a lot harder to live on earth. Now we consider saving the ocean from plastic, from oil spills or from overfishing. But really, we should be thinking about how the ocean is saving us. It is saving us from the climate change that we are creating. Basically, what we need to do is think about not how to save the ocean, but instead how the ocean can actually help us in this fight against climate change. Already, the ocean is absorbing 25 to 30% of the CO2 that we release into the atmosphere. It is the world’s largest carbon sink. It has also absorbed 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases. So it is basically helping to keep the planet habitable. When we think about climate action, climate strategies and climate plans, we often overlook the ocean and leave it out because somehow we think that saving the ocean is something else we have to do, not a core part of our climate strategy. That’s what has to change because the ocean is a core part of our climate system, and so it has to be a core part of our climate solutions. 12. What does the author think of the ocean’s meaning to humans? A. It supports life system on the planet. B. It offers chances to find mysterious treasure. C. It provides a large number of deep dark water. D. It is a perfect place to watch whales and coral reefs. 13. What does the underlined word “excess” mean in paragraph 4? A. Low. B. High. C. Moderate. D. Extra. 14. What would happen if we live without ocean? A. The poles would be hot. B. Overfishing would not be a problem. C. The globe would be tougher to live on. D. The climate would be changed slightly. 15. What is the text mainly about? A. Strategies to save the ocean. B. Whether the ocean is habitable. C. Saving the ocean is saving humans. D. A place to watch whales and coral reefs. 第二节 (共5小题, 每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to support a child with test anxiety It’s normal for students to feel nervous before or during a test. He thought living 1500 miles away from his elderly mother, Cassandra, would work out because he planned to visit her monthly. Mark stuck to his visiting plan during the first year. However, with the amount of work increasing, he couldn’t find time to visit his mother monthly. He started to only speak to her on the phone, telling her about his life. Soon, Mark became busy and made a few phone calls to Cassandra. He didn’t even remember the last time they spoke on the phone. One day, while working in his office, Mark heard his phone ring. “Mom’s 70th birthday!” the reminder on his phone read. “Oh, dear. How can I forget my mom’s birthday again?” Mark shook his head as he turned the reminder alarm off. “I can’t keep disappointing her like this. Let me see how fast I can get to her place.” After checking his work schedule (日程计划), Mark realized that he could make it to his mother’s house by the evening if he left the office in an hour. He quickly finished the work and left the office without wasting another minute. On his way, he stopped at a store and bought his mother’s favorite cake. He also bought her flowers and a few gifts. Although he wanted to call her, Mark thought it would be better to surprise her because he was sure that she wasn’t expecting him to visit her. After all, this was the first time that he had done something like this in a long time. Mark finally arrived at the mother’s house. However, when he knocked at the door, no one answered. Puzzled, he opened the door with his key and entered. Nobody was there. He searched the house worriedly, only to find an envelope covered with dust on the table.
