People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind. the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

C. Farmers’ Best Choice D. Smart Farmers, Healthy Farmers

①Would you like to get fewer colds and feel better? Would you like to have a taste of a special plant? Would you like to keep a plant with little care? An Aloe Vera plant could be just what the scientists may suggest!
②Growing Aloe Vera plants at home can make the air clean and fresh. Studies have shown that they give off oxygen(O₂) and take away harmful things from the air. With clean and fresh air, you are more likely to stay away from colds, sore throats and dry coughs. And even if you do get sick, Aloe Vera plants may help you get better from the illness faster.
③Did you know that Aloe Vera plants can be used as medicine? Aloe Vera gel(胶体) helps to deal with the pain of burns. And it also helps with itchiness(痒) caused by insect bites. To get this gel, just cut off a part of the plant, peel it, and put the gel on the affected skin(患处). This easy-to-get and safe-to-use medicine is available to you all year round.
④Apart from medical use, Aloe Vera plants are also popular in food industry. Whether you are interested in Aloe juice or crazy about Aloe yogurt, you’ll easily find them in the supermarket. Aloe Vera can also go with other vegetables to make a safe dish on your dinner table.
⑤ ▲ They like dry, warm air with bright light, so they grow best when placed near a window. Aloe Vera plants are able to keep water in their leaves. So, they do not need to be watered so often as most houseplants. Just wait until the earth is completely dry before you water them. When watering, make sure the earth is wet enough so that it can last for a long time. That’s all you need to do to to take care of an Aloe Vera plant. Isn’t it the perfect plant for lazy and forgetful gardeners.

In Flanders, a small town in Belgium, lived a little boy called Nello. He became an orphan (孤儿) at the age of two. Then he lived with his grandpa in a small house. Life was harder for them.
Their life depended on Nello’s grandpa. Every morning, the old man would collect fresh milk from one house to another. He then had to load (装载) the milk on a cart and sent it to the city. Growing up a little older, Nello would try to help his grandpa to travel from Flanders to the city.
One day, as Nello and his grandpa were going home from the city they saw a large dog lying on the side of the road. The dog was motionless.
“What happened?” asked Nello. “Is the dog dead?” His grandpa touched the nose of the dog with his hand and examined the body of the dog. He then said to Nello “The dog is seriously ill. We have to take him to a vet (兽医), or he will die.” With the words, his grandpa put the dog on the cart and the two went home. The fact was that the dog was abandoned (抛弃) by his master because of his serious illness. Seeing the dying dog, Nello was heart-broken. The kind hearted boy took good care of him. Even though Nello and his grandpa did not have enough to eat, he would still feed the dog with milk and bread. Day by day, the dog began to stand on his feet and became stronger and stronger.
“We should give him a name,” said Nello one day to his grandpa.
“That’s a good idea,” replied his grandpa. “What name do you want to give him? How about Patrasche?” said Nello.
“Patrasche is a beautiful name,” said his grandpa.
From then on, Patrasche became a member of the family.
One day, as Nello and his grandpa loaded the cart with milk and were ready to start their journey to the city, Patrasche stood in front of the cart.
“Out of the way, Patrasche,” said Nello. “We’ll be late.” But Patrasche refused to move. He was simply staring at Grandpa and wagging(摇摆) his tail. “What does he want to do?” asked Nello.
His grandpa smiled and said. “I believe our Patrasche wants to help pull the cart.” Hearing Grandpa’s words, Patrasche was wagging his tail even harder.
Patrasche had been badly treated by his master all his life. Never had anyone treated him nicely as Nello and his grandpa. Patrasche was thankful for the kindness he received, so he wanted to help, Grandpa tied a stripe on Patrasche, and he started to pull the cart right away.
From then on, people in town would see such a scene a large dog was pulling a cart loaded with milk with the grandpa pushing behind and Nello helping at the side.

Although it happened over 10 years ago, I still remember the moment clearly, I had ordered a drink at a mall in Beijing. When it was ready, the server handed me a cup with laowai written on it, meaning“foreigner”.
It was my second day in China, and this marked the first at different places when I would be called a laowai in public. What does it feel like to be called a laowai?
As someone who doesn’t like being in the spotlight (聚光灯), walking down the street and suddenly hearing someone say to their friend, “Look, a laowai”, is not a pleasant experience. It just makes you feel awkward and draws unnecessary attention.
As much as I dislike being singled out, I also try to understand. China is not a nation like Australia, where I’m from. So. for many Chinese people, seeing a foreigner is still a big deal. When I’m in a place in China with few foreigners, even I sometimes can’t help but point out to my friends that there’s another foreigner nearby, I just make sure to do it carefully!
My Chinese friends also tell me that laowai is a more welcome term than waiguoren because lao adds a touch of respect and friendship. I’ve never felt it came from a place of rudeness or disrespect. The longer I live here, the more China feels like home, and the more I just want to “fit in”. And that, I think, is something beautiful.

Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects.

He then said to Nello, “The dog is seriously ill.

Everyone goes through different changes over time. Since I entered Grade 9, I have noticed significant changes in myself, especially in my study habits.
I used to procrastinate and often found myself panicking before exams. My poor preparation led to unsatisfactory grades, which lowered my confidence. However, I realized that this habit needed to change if I wanted to succeed. I started organizing my schedule and allocating specific time for each subject.
