Ireland may be relatively small, but its dramatic coasts, country roads, and historic cities have visitors wishing for more time. To help maximize your trip, we consulted local experts for their best bets.
Coumshingaun
John G. O’ Dwyer, the author of 50 Best Irish Walks, said his favorite is a hike that leads to Coumshingaun, a lake hidden in County Waterford’s Comeragh Mountains, where 18th-century highwayman William Crotty is said to have hidden his treasure. “You can accomplish it in four hours and it’s still off the beaten path,” says O’ Dwyer.
Traditional pubs
Doheny & Nesbitts is a great traditional Irish bar in Dublin. The Victorian classic is known as the Doheny & Nesbitt School of Economics. In Bray, Harbour Bar brings a bit of everything with great music, great food in the Fish Bar and great beer. Dating from the 1880s, the old drinking hole feels at once like a home of an Irish classic.
Saltee Islands
Puffins (海鹦) arrive from the Atlantic to County Wexford’s Saltee Islands bird reserve and County Kerry’s Skellig Michael from May to July (book boat trips well in advance). You can easily take a cellphone or camera photo. Watch for puffins bringing fish into their burrows, or moments when they turn their heads.
Trinity’s Old Library
The ninth-century Book of Kells combines calligraphy, creativity, and an amazing state of preservation. The book is housed in Trinity’s Old Library, a 213-foot-long room said to have influenced Star Wars. This summer is a special time to visit, with the last of the storehouse’s 200,000 works being recovered ahead of a major restoration. Visitors can watch staff cautiously removing the treasures.
21. What is the best time to attend Saltee Islands?
A. Dec.30. B. Oct.26. C. Aug.14. D. Jun.10.
22. What can we know about Book of Kells?

My job is to train rats to find landmines (地雷) so the dangers can be cleared to save lives. I work for a Belgian non-governmental organization called Apopo that operates from Morogoro, in my home country of Tanzania. The rats I train are used in mine-clearing programs around the world, including in Angola, Azerbaijan and Cambodia.
The animals we use are a species of African giant rat called Cricetomys ansorgei (非洲巨鼠). They are born in sub-Saharan Africa and are the size of a small cat, which makes them easy to catch. They also live longer than other rats, which is helpful for the program, because it takes between nine months and a year to train one fully.
My colleagues and I use a method called clicker training: we teach the rats to relate a click with a food reward, and then use clicks to gradually reward their behaviour. Rats are naturally curious, so they will explore, and their great sense of smell means they can find buried landmines.
To teach the rats what to look for, we place small amounts of TNT explosives in some tea eggs and mix them with ones filled with other things. We reward the rats for touching these, then move on to reward them only when they touch a tea egg filled with explosives, rather than ones filled with other things, such as hair, flowers and so on. The rats need to perform perfectly at each stage of training before they move to the next stage. In the final stage, we use real landmines in a training field.
As trainers, we build a connection with the rats we train. Some are slow learners; others know the process very quickly. Most of the rats make it through, eventually. I work with our resident scientists to continually follow and improve our training program, because the rats are so clever that they can be smarter than trainers!
24. Why did the author choose to use Cricetomys ansorgei?
A. They’re quickly trained. B. They live for up to a year.
C. They’re easily accessible. D. They can be seen commonly.
25. What’s the key to the training?
A. Exercising rats’ sense of smell. B. Linking behavior and rewards.
C. Increasing the difficulty gradually. D. Making the rats get used to the click.
26. What can be inferred from the training process?
A. Most rats are quick learners.
B. The training won’t stay the same.
C. Real landmines aren’t used in training.
D. Rats can find out all the explosives accurately.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. How rats contribute to saving life. B. Why giant rats can be useful.
C. How rats are trained to find explosives. D. Why we use clicker to train rats.

A revolution in weather forecasting could soon see warnings of coming heatwaves, storms or other extreme events accompanied by specific information on the role climate change has played in fuelling them. The shift would help bring the reality of our warming planet to the general public.
Key to this idea is the growing field of attribution science(归因科学), which involves examining extreme weather events after the fact to detail the impact of climate change. It involves simulating an event twice, under real-world conditions and in a fictional world with no human-caused climate change. The difference between those two situations reveals the extent to which rising emissions(排放)made matters worse. Now, researchers want to go further and apply attribution science to events before they even happen.
At the UK weather service, the Met Office, Peter Stott and his colleagues are doing this with weather forecasting models, comparing real-world forecasts with ones based on a fictional world unaffected by human influence. The goal is to provide the public with weather and climate information at the same time. “So, the forecast shows how the weather information relates to climate change, and the impacts it will mean for them locally.”
Bernat at the Institute of GeoSciences in Spain has experimented with a different approach, using artificial intelligence-powered weather forecasts. Together with colleagues, he ran the AI-enabled approach on three past extreme events: the 2018 Iberian heatwave, Hurricane Florence in the US in2018, and Storm Ciaran in the UK and other parts of northern Europe in 2023. The AI models correctly predicted that all three extreme events would occur, but underestimated their size. Bernat says the AI approach is currently most accurate when considering heatwaves but more limited for complex systems such as a tropical storm.
But Bernat says AI weather forecasts are rapidly improving. He says this AI-based approach would allow attribution analysis to be much more widely used, helping to expand people’s understanding of how extreme events are changing.
28. What will be added to weather forecasting after the revolution?
A. Effective measures in preventing extreme weather events.
B. The effect of climate change on extreme weather events.
C. Specific ways for the public to fight against climate change.
D. The damage extreme weather events cause to the environment.
29. What’s the purpose of the work of Peter’s team?
A. To connect local weather with climate change.
B. To predict the degree of local carbon emissions.
C. To apply AI to the prediction of extreme events.
D. To build a model to produce climate information.
30. What is Bernat’s attitude toward AI weather forecasts?
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Weather Forecasts Enjoy a Great Change Fuelled by AI
B. Emissions Are Predicted to Fuel Extreme Weather Events
C. Climate Information Will Be Added to Weather Forecasts
D. AI Technology Will Be Used in Predicting Weather Events
D
More digital devices equal less time to concentrate and to think. The negative effects of this on researchers are settled by computer scientist Cal Newport in his latest book, Slow Productivity.
The book’s title challenges the idea that productivity must always increase, which is common in many workplaces. A study has shown that science is becoming less disruptive (引起混乱的), even though there are now more papers being published than ever before. Newport, who studies technology in the workplace at Georgetown University in Washington DC, says that researchers and other knowledge workers need to slow down and spend more time thinking to focus on improving quality in their work.
Newer communications technologies have enormous benefits, including speeding up research. But they are also compressing thinking time. Communications technologies are sure to evolve further and to continue distracting researchers from their work.
Newport’s paper raises a much more fundamental question: what is the impact of lost concentration time on science — not just on the structure and process of science, but also on the content and quality of research? Newport used many examples to explain the question. These examples will help researchers and institutional leaders to make better decisions about the technologies’ arrangement and time to think.
Newport also refers to some studies on how thinking time can be protected in a world of instant communication and gives suggestions on increasing thinking time, including limiting the number of items on to-do lists and avoiding individual members sending e-mails to each other. For institutions, Newport recommends a clear workload management system — a way for managers to see everything that a colleague is expected to do — and then to adjust the workload if there are more tasks than there is available time.
32. What’s the general thought in many workplaces?
A. Improving productivity is important. B. Digital devices increase productivity.
C. Workers must publish papers regularly. D. Workers should only focus on improving quality.
33. Which can explain the underlined word “compressing” in paragraph 3?
A. Balancing. B. Controlling. C. Decreasing. D. Wasting.
34. How does Newport explain lacking thinking time is bad for science?
A. By surveying scientists. B. By giving examples.
C. By doing some research. D. By referring to some studies.
35. What’s the suggestion of Newport for increasing thinking time?
A. Lowering extra work burden. B. Limiting the number of e-mails.
C. Working tasks should be complex. D. Working environment should be friendly.

One day, I was alone at home because my family had all gone to another city to attend a wedding. Although it was my first time staying at home, I still refused my mother’s suggestion to go to the neighbor Jenkins’s house. That odd old man, who looks like a bad guy in a fairy tale, is often laughed at and talked about by nearby children. It is obvious that he is a person without friends, except for my kind parents.
As instructed by my mother, I locked the door, did my homework first, and then turned on the TV. Just as I was enjoying my favorite animated series, a thunderous sound rang out, and then the TV went out. Even worse, the lights went out and everything went dark. I tried to pull myself together and find a source of light. I could hardly see anything, so I had to wave my arms in front of me to avoid hitting any furniture. I moved towards the kitchen cabinet where I could remember my mother storing some candles for emergencies.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming towards my house. My heart was filled with tension. Who could that be? It can’t be Mom and Dad, they have been setting off for half a day, and by now they may have arrived at their destination. That’s the thief! I confidently told myself.
My heart raced as the footsteps grew closer, and I nervously grasped a kitchen knife to defend myself. But before I could even grasp it, a gentle knock came on the door, followed by a familiar voice. “Hello? Is everything alright there? ” It was Mr. Jenkins. How was it him? Did he want to steal things while my parents are not around?
Despite my initial fear, something about his tone felt reassuring. I hesitated for a moment, and then cautiously approached the door. “Mr. Jenkins? What are you doing here? ” I asked through the locked door.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“Can you open the door? ” he replied in a steady voice.

Dear fellow students,
My topic is “Adjust Mindset and Take the Exam with Ease”. It’s common that many classmates have an unhealthy mindset when taking exams. They often feel extremely anxious and stressed, leading to poor concentration and unexpected mistakes.
To handle this problem, we can adopt several methods. Firstly, make a detailed study plan and follow it strictly for better preparation. Secondly, do some physical activities to relieve tension. For instance, take a short walk or do simple stretching. Moreover, keep telling ourselves that we are well-prepared and capable.
Let’s adjust our mindset and face the exams calmly and confidently! That’s all. Thank you!
第二节(满分25 分)
【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
“Can you open the door?” he replied in a steady voice. “I thought I’d check to see if you needed any help.” I hesitated, but the darkness and my fear of being alone won out. I unlocked the door, and Mr. Jenkins stepped inside, holding a flashlight. He quickly assessed the situation and retrieved a candle and matches from the cabinet, lighting up the room with a warm glow.
As we sat at the kitchen table, Mr. Jenkins began to share his funny childhood stories. He transformed from the solitary old man I had imagined into a kind and humorous companion, leaving me with a newfound appreciation for him. We laughed together, and I realized that appearances can be deceiving. When the power eventually returned, Mr. Jenkins made sure everything was in order before leaving. I watched him walk away, grateful for his unexpected kindness. From that day on, I saw Mr. Jenkins in a new light, and our unlikely friendship blossomed.
