He is particularly famous for his work on rabies vaccine (狂犬病疫苗). The rabies virus enters the body through the bite of an infected animal or through infected saliva (唾液) entering an existing wound. After experimenting with the saliva of animals suffering from the disease, Pasteur concluded that the disease rests in the central nervous system of the body. By studying the tissue of infected animals — rabbits, Pasteur was able to produce a form of the virus. This could be used for inoculation (接种). On July 6, 1885, Pasteur tested his vaccine on a man for the first time. He saved the life of a young man called Joseph Meister who had been bitten by a rabid dog. Pasteur was urged to treat him with his new method. The treatment lasted 10 days and in the end Joseph recovered and remained healthy. Since then thousands have been saved by this treatment. On March 1886, Pasteur was invited to present his results to the Academy of Sciences and in 1888 went on to found the Pasteur Institute in Paris. This was a pioneering clinic for the study of infectious diseases, the treatment of rabies and a centre for teaching. Pasteur directed the institute personally until he died. The Pasteur Institute is still one of the most important centres in the world. Pasteur became a national hero and was honored in many ways. He died at Saint-Cloud on September 28, 1895 and was given a state funeral at the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Modifications of the Pasteur method are still used in rabies treatment today. A newer vaccine which contains the virus prepared from human cells grown in the lab is safer and requires a shorter course of injections. 4. Rabies probably can destroy a person’s ________. A. nervous system B. blood C. skin D. saliva 5. What can we learn about Pasteur’s test of his vaccine on the man? A. It didn’t save the man’s life. B. The man was his second patient. The treatment for rabies. B. The introduction to rabies vaccine. C. An analysis of the cause of rabies. D. Pasteur’s devotion to rabies vaccine. C Baby sign language is a growing movement. Pointing to a colorful flower, Campbell lifts her baby’s soft hand, and rapidly moves it from one side of his nose to the other as she sniffs (嗅). “Flower!” she says loudly. Gregory smiles and looks carefully. It could be a year before Gregory, four months old, can speak, but now his mother hopes to communicate with her baby through sign language. Like others around the world, Campbell is part of a growing movement of parents teaching hearing babies simple signs to communicate before they can talk. The baby sign language has been more popular in recent years. The movie, Meet the Fockers, where the main character teaches his young grandson to sign, makes it well developed. Babies generally begin to talk between 12 and 15 months, but babies can use sign language to communicate before they learn how to speak. “We know they are learning language faster than they are able to show you with their speech production because that system takes a long time to develop,” says McRoberts, director of developmental research at the Haskins Laboratories. “They are understanding words before they are able to say them. From around 16 to 18 months, they might say 50 words but understand 200. They understand short sentences well,” says McRoberts. Studies have shown deaf children learn to use sign language earlier than hearing children learn to speak meaningfully. As to whether hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language, McRoberts says, “I think that’s still unknown. It may not. I’m very interested in that very question.” 8. The first paragraph is written to _________. A show Gregory can use baby sign language B. introduce the topic — baby sign language C. show how Campbell taught her son “flower” D. explain that baby sign language is easy to learn 9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? A. How to teach a grandson. B. Making baby sign language meaningful. C. The movement of teaching babies sign language. D. The movie Meet the Fockers. 10. Many parents teach their babies sign language mainly to _________. A. communicate with their babies B. make their babies learn English fast C. make their babies clever D. make their babies interested in language 11 Which of the following does McRoberts agree with? A. Babies learn to talk quickly. B. Babies can understand more words than they can say. C. Hearing babies can communicate earlier. D. Deaf babies understand short sentences well. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Read Candidates’ Body Language in an Interview Body language matters, especially in interviews. ___12___ Our posture, gestures, movements or facial expressions can shape our reputations. C. It proved to be a great success. D. The man was sent to a clinic ten days later. 6. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Pasteur’s rabies vaccine is out of date. B. A new rabies vaccine has already been tested on patients. C. Injections of vaccine still take much time. D. Much improvement has been made on rabies vaccine. 7. What’s the text mainly about? A. The treatment for rabies. B. The introduction to rabies vaccine. C. An analysis of the cause of rabies. D. Pasteur’s devotion to rabies vaccine. 【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. A. show Gregory can use baby sign language B. introduce the topic — baby sign language C. show how Campbell taught her son “flower” D. explain that baby sign language is easy to learn 9. A. communicate with their babies B. make their babies learn English fast C. make their babies clever D. make their babies interested in language 11. Which of the following does McRoberts agree with? A. Babies learn to talk quickly. B. Babies can understand more words than they can say. C. Hearing babies can communicate earlier. D Deaf babies understand short sentences well. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. From around 16 to 18 months, they might say 50 words but understand 200. They understand short sentences well,” says McRoberts. How to Read Candidates’ Body Language in an Interview Body language matters, especially in interviews. ___12___ Our posture, gestures, movements or facial expressions can shape our reputations. Learning to read body language is about understanding candidates’ motives. Reading body language during interviews can provide valuable insights into a candidate’s personality ___13___ Here are some common interview body language signals that you can learn to read. Observe extreme behaviour. A candidate’s harmless action doesn’t mean they won’t fit in well at your company. But be careful about extreme behaviours, like a person constantly checking their phone. ___14___ You can read people’s body language by observing changes in their movements or posture. Imagine, for example, that a candidate suddenly starts tapping their foot. Maybe they feel the interview is taking too long. Or perhaps they’re facing an uncomfortable question. Connect the dots. ___15___ For example, people may cross their arms when they’re cold. But, when you see a candidate crossing their arms, crossing their legs and balling their fists at the same time, prepare yourself for an aggressive (咄咄逼人的) answer. Candidate experience greatly depends on an interviewer’s body language. Positive body language can make candidates relax and open up. Negative body language can spark (引发) defensive and reserved reactions. ___16___ A. Spot the difference. B. Ask detailed questions. C. It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. D. They don’t necessarily act the same way all the time. E. However, understanding body language isn’t an exact science. F. You can’t always tell what a specific gesture means on its own. G. Be aware of mistakes to preserve a positive candidate experience. 【答案】12. C 13. E 14. A 15. F 16.
