Zu Wenbao is a 23-year-old young man with autism (自闭症). It can be hard for a person with autism to find a job or make friends. The disease is not well known and there is not much support for people like Zu. He is nonverbal, which means he does not speak. But he is doing better now as he is learning music and spending time with other young people at a school called Chen’s Studio in Beijing.
Chen’s Studio started offering music lessons for people with autism when the pandemic (流行病) started.
Zu’s mother, Zhao Guorong, brings her son to the music school every Sunday so he can study with the teacher,
Chen Shensi. It takes them two hours on three different buses to get to the classroom from their home outside of Beijing. At the Beijing studio, Zu learned how to play the keyboards and sing in a band called Star Kids.
“Without music, without these lessons, he wouldn’t have anything, Zhao said. The children he grew up with, she said, all have jobs or go to school. She said her son would not have any people to socialize with if it were not for the music school. Although Zu is older than the other young people at Chen’s Studio, "they all take care of him like he’s their brother,” Zhao said.
Chen knows the young people with autism will have trouble getting jobs, so he hopes music will help them make a living. The Star Kids band has already played some concerts.
At the start, it was hard. Chen became frustrated (沮丧的) when he had trouble communicating with his students. However, it eventually became easier. He said he knows it is hard for them to communicate. But “to some degree, I think music might be their language”.

Directed by the AFM private company, National University of Science and Technology(NUST)MISIS engineers, together with the Karfidov Lab design group, have invented a machine named Salatomat that could serve meals to users in a very short time. The engineers say this machine cooks dishes from vegetables and cereals(谷物)in 30-60 seconds, so it can produce between 150 and 500 meals per day.
The cooking machine contains 16 basic ingredients-vegetables, cereals, potatoes, noodles-and 20 dressings and toppings. With this set, Salatomat can cook up to 1, 000 different dishes, with the user able to make a personal choice of products. These dishes are especially fit for those who live a healthy lifestyle or have some health problems.
“The machine has its own ‘brain’. It can remember users’ choices and medical history. And it knows what is in it and what it can produce with the help of the RFID chip,” said Aleksey Karfidov, head of the department of technological equipment engineering at NUST MISIS.
“The process begins with the preparation of products -putting ingredients into the robot, cutting vegetables, and controlling the temperature (cooling or heating, depending on the dish),” said Aleksey Karfidov. According to the developers, the robot is able to ensure the safety of food and quick preparation of well-balanced meals. The machine will also be completely non-contact-all cooking steps are carried out by itself.
All ingredients inside Salatomat are put into clean containers. Ingredients can be stored in the containers for eight hours at most, and if not used, they must be removed and cleaned.
8. What is Salatomat designed to do?
A. Store different foods. B. Help prepare meals.
C. Wash the dishes. D. Grow vegetables.
9. What can be inferred about Salatomat according to Aleksey Karfidov?
A. It’s smart. B. It’s unworkable. C. It’s expensive. D. It’s space-saving.
10. What does paragraph4 mainly talk about?
A. The way Salatomat works. B. The change Salatomat brings.
C. The cost of buying ingredients. D. The importance of food safety.
11. What should users notice when using Salatomat?
A. Clean it up after each use.
B. Mix everything together before it works.
C. Keep a close eye on its temperature.
D. Take out its ingredients stored over eight hours.

Babies blink and cry — and a few weeks into their lives, they might smile. But do these movements mean that newborns have conscious (有意识的) experiences of understanding the world around them?
Based on recent studies valuing babies’ brain activities and eye movements, the case for consciousness in newborns is increasingly strong. “We still don’t have a final answer, but new evidence has contributed to an increasing agreement that consciousness starts early, in comparison with other theories that claim we need more cognitive (认知的) development for babies to become conscious,” says Ferreira, professor of bi ology at the NYU School.
This new evidence for consciousness relies on methods that creatively value brain activity in newborns. Babies can’t respond to directions and sleep quite a bit, making their minds difficult to study. Ferreira’s new article discusses the new ways that scientists value whether babies are conscious: measuring brainwave responses to unexpected sounds, using imaging to value the brain’s networks, and tracking eye movements such as blinks to see how babies react to different stimuli (刺激).
Knowing when and how consciousness arises is really important for parents’ relationships with babies. Parents usually already believe that their babies are conscious creatures and can experience suffering and pleasure. They try to make their babies comfortable and make sure that they have a better environment for their development. If we have a better understanding about babies’ conscious minds, we may be able to better the way we relate to babies.
This may also be useful for baby care. Until quite recently, people thought that babies needed more brain development to be able to feel pain. Now we know that even though the baby brain is still developing, the feeling of pain seems to already be there.
12. How did Ferreira get the new evidence?
A. By measuring babies’ brain activity. B. By searching for related experience.
C. By collecting unknown sounds. D. By comparing different pictures.
13. What is the challenge of studying consciousness in babies?
A. Behavior observation is unreliable.
B. Babies can’t follow researcher’s directions.
C. Babies’ sleep state is completely different.
D. Valuing the brain’s networks is not scientific.
14. What does the underlined word “This” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Tracking brains’ networks.
B. The ways of stimulating eyes.
C. Understanding how and when consciousness appears.
D. Parents’ previous belief on taking care of kids.
15. What does the author imply in the last two paragraphs?
A. Our knowledge of baby consciousness needs improvement.
B The development of brain causes the feeling of pain.
C. A comfortable environment cannot be ignored.
D. The quality of present baby care is of low level.

Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. ____16____
It can ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive (认知的) tiredness and improve reaction time straight away. ____17____
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a l5-metre room at their natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city scene. ____18____ On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
____19____ In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish (区分) between basic visual shapes on the computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image (the same ones from the first experiment).
Measuring reaction time in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes.
____20____ Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove that idea.
A. Nature influences us in many ways.
B. A walk through nature does the opposite, though.
C. They said they couldn’t concentrate properly after walking.
D. After each, participants were asked to rate their discomfort.
E. The study includes two experiments with two different ways.

第二节(满分15分)
47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was our first winter in Chicago. Just as the animals were hibernating (冬眠), it seemed that so were our new neighbors. As newcomers, we felt alone.
Then something happened. It all began with a simple request from our eight-year-old daughter. “Mommy, let's put up a Christmas tree at home. ”
At first we didn't pay too much attention to this request, for we had never put up a Christmas tree. But my daughter's repeated request made us go ahead with this first step: loaded with layers of clothing to fight the unfamiliar cold, we tasked ourselves with finding a tree for our daughter.
When we finally selected our tree, we realized we didn't have a car big enough to get it home. Of course, we had not considered that. It was our first time. We had no choice but to carry it home. We had walked only a few steps when a gentleman in our neighborhood stopped his truck and offered us a ride home. Our first friend.
The Christmas tree was propped up (支起) in our living area but it was too dark. We needed Christmas lights! So, the next evening, we went to a store and asked for lights. The storekeeper, who, after getting over the surprise of our seemingly silly questions, explained to us that we needed multi-colored lights. Thanking the kind soul, we left with our lights and his warmth. Our second friend.
That night, we carefully wound the lights around the tree and excitedly held our breaths for the beauty of the first glow. Still, it looked like something was missing: small ornaments (装 饰) . Where would we get them? One lady across the street had a breathtaking tree carefully placed in a window for all to see. Every night, I stood behind the curtain, spending unnatural amounts of time studying the bells and whistles in her tree.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One evening, seeing the lady clearing snow off her sidewalk, I made a decision.

B. The development of brain causes the feeling of pain.
C. A comfortable environment cannot be ignored.
D. The quality of present baby care is of low level.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. A

F. The second experiment dug into some higher-level cognitive processes.
G. The reason is that urban environments are more likely to take our attention away.
【答案】16. B 17. E 18. D 19. F 20. G

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了在城市里散步和在公园里散步不一样并通过研究讲述其原因。
【16题详解】
根据文中第一句“Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park.(在城市里散步和在公园里散步很不一样)”提到城里散步不同于公园散步;紧接着阐明城里散步的研究结果“A small psychology study suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load.(一项小型心理学研究表明,城市环境会放慢你的脚步,并可能增加你的精神负荷)”那么接下来应是对在“自然中散步”的情况进行对比。因此B项“而在大自然中散步则恰恰相反”符合题意。故选B。
【17题详解】
根据第三段第一句“The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and cognitive load.(这项新研究的两个实验中的第一个集中在人们的走路方式和认知负荷上)”可知设空处需要一个概括这个实验的句子,因此E项“该研究包括两个实验,采用两种不同的方法”符合上下文语境,承接上文“ The findings show that natural settings may potentially reduce cognitive (认知的) tiredness and improve reaction time straight away.(调查发现表明,自然环境可能会减少认知疲劳,并直接提高反应时间)”,the study呼应上文的the findings。故选E。
【18题详解】
根据此段对第一个实验的描述,特别是“During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a l5-metre room at their natural speed.(在这次试验中,参与者被安装了传感器和十几个运动控制摄像头,观察他们以自然速度重复走下一个15米高的房间)”,以及空后句中的“people reported that they felt more uncomfortable(人们报告说他们感觉更不舒服)”可知,参与者被要求报告他们在两种环境下不舒适度的感受,因此D “在每个实验后参与者被要求评估他们的不舒适)”符合上下文语境,故选D。
【19题详解】
根据第三段段首“The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people's way of walking and cognitive load.(这项新研究的两个实验中的第一个集中在人们的走路方式和认知负荷上)”对两个实验的提及,可以推断出这里讲的是第二个实验。由此可知F项“第二种实验是深入研究一些更高层次的认知过程”符合题意,“higher-level cognitive”是解题的关键字眼,和第一个实验形成递进关系,故选F。
【20题详解】
上文“the team found results to support their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple shapes. (研究小组发现了支持他们观点的结果。在城市环境中,参与者辨别简单形状的速度较慢。)”是对参与者在两种环境下散步产生差异性的分析,由此推知,空处可能陈述原因。因此G项“原因是城市环境更容易让人分心。”分析了原因,符合上下文语境,下文“Our brains take longer to process. (我们的大脑需要更长的时间来处理。)”进一步阐述原因。故选G。

At first, we didn't pay too much attention to this request, for we had never put up a Christmas tree.

I hope they'll make your tree just as beautiful as mine." With tears in my eyes, I thanked her profusely. That evening, our tree was finally complete, and it was truly a sight to behold. Our third friend had helped us create a Christmas we would never forget.
