The diners 25 (seat) at dark table ate heavier food and ordered more of it, 26 those sitting at bright bar tables ordered more salads and fewer desserts. In an experiment that 41 healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny temper were less likely to fall ill.The findings were built on evidence that a “positive emotional style" can help to 42 the common cold and other illness.
"Researchers believe the reasons may be both objective as in happiness 43 immune function and subjective as in happy people being less disturbed by a sore throat or running nose." "People with a positive emotional style may have active immune responses to the virus,"explained lead study author Dr. Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. "And when they do get a cold, they may interpret their ilness as being less severe."
Actually, 44 on the previous study results, Cohen and his colleagues have been 45 certain that pleasant people are, for most cases, less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether a person's character itself brings about the effect. For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults 46 standard measures of personality tendency, self-conscious health and emotional "style". Those who tend to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional 47 while those who were often unhappy, tense and opposed had a negative style.
The researchers gave them nasal(鼻子的)drops 48 either a cold virus or a particular flu virus. Over the next six years, the researchers collected 49 like daily mucus(唾液) protection. Cohen and his colleagues found that based on objective analysis of nose 50 , happy people were less likely to develop a cold.
Il. Reading Comprehension(45')
Section A(15')
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fts the context.
Why girls do better at school than boys?
For centuries, boys were top of the class. But these days, that's no longer the case. A new study by the OECD, a club of mostly 51 countries in Europe and North America, examined how 15-year-old boys and girls performed at reading, mathematics and science. Boys stil get somewhat better 52 at maths and physics, and in other science courses the genders are roughly 53 . But when it comes to the students who really struggle and suffer at school, the difference is 54 : boys are 50% more likely than girls to fall short of basic standards in all three areas. 55 ,why are girls performing better at school than their male classmates?
First, girls read more than boys. Reading proficiency(熟练) is the basis upon which all other learning is built. When boys don't do well in reading, their 56 in other school subjects suffers too. Second, girls spend much more time on their homework and out-of-class learning. 57 , girls spend five and a half hours per week doing homework while boys spend a little less than four and a half hours. Researchers suggest that doing homework 58 by teachers is linked to better accomplishment in maths, reading and science. Boys, it appears, spend more of their free time in the 59 world; they are 17% more likely to play cooperative online games than girls every day. They also use the intermet more.
Third, peer 60 plays a role. A lot of boys decide early on that they are just too cool for school. They adopt a so-called concept of masculinity(男子气概) that includes a disregard for 61, which means they're more likely to be rude and noisy in class. Teachers mark them down for this. In anonymous(匿名的) tests, boys perform better. In fact, the gender gap in reading 62 by a third when teachers don't know the gender of the pupil they are marking.
So what can be done to close this gap? Getting boys to do more homework and cut down on screen-time would help. And offering boys a 63 to read non-fiction would help too: they're keener on comics and newspapers. But most of all, abandoning gender stereotypes(旧模式) would 64 all students. Thus, boys in all countries with the best schools read much better than girls. As we know, girls in Shanghai, Singapore and Seoul are good at mathematics, and they 65 boys from anywhere else in the world.

(A)
It was 1961 and I was in the fifth grade. My marks in school were miserable and, the thing was, I didn't know enough to really care. My older brother and I lived with Mom in a humble house in Detroit. We watched TV every night.
But one day Mom changed our world forever. She turned off the TV. Our mother had only been able to get through third grade. But, she was much brighter and smarter than we boys knew at the time. She had noticed something in the suburban houses she cleaned---books. So she came home one day, snapped off the TV, sat us down and explained that her sons were going to make something of themselves. "You boys are going to read two books every week," she said. "And you're going to write a report on what you read."We complained about how unfair it was. Besides, we didn't have any books in the house other than Mom's Bible. But she explained that we would go where the books were regardles of how unwilling or even angry we were: "I'll drive you to the library."
So pretty soon there were these two peevish boys siting in her car on their way to Detroit Public Library. I wandered reluctantly among the children's books. I loved animals, so when I saw some books that seemed to be about animals, I started leafing through them. The first book I read clear through was Chip the Dam Builder. It was about beavers(海狸). For the first time in my life I was lost in another world. No television program had ever taken me so far away from my surroundings as did this verbal visit to a cold stream in a forest and these animals building a home. It didn't dawn on me at the time, but the experience was quite different from watching TV. There were images forming in my mind instead of before my eyes. And I could returm to them again and again with the flip of a page. Soon I began to look forward to visiting this quiet refuge from my other world.
Now my older brother is an engineer and I am a doctor. Sometimes I still can't believe my life's journey, from a failing and indiferent student in a Detroit public school to this position, which takes me all over the world to teach and perform critical surgery.
But I know when the journey began the day Mom snapped off the TV set and put us in her car for that drive to the library.

Are you worried about money? If so, I have some good news for you. Someone once said, "If all your problems can be solved with money, then you don't have any. "I get the point. Unless you are on the edge of losing everything and living in your car(which is a very sad thing that happens to people every day), your perceptions of your problems may not be serving you well.
Let's take a look. Can you pay your living expenses and support your family? If so, you are OK. Even if you are a family that just barely breaks even every month, you have to count that as a blessing. Most of us also have those terrible, surprising unexpected bills. But unless you lose your job or your mind, don't you always find away to take care of those expenses?
PERTINENT(切中要害的) QUESTIONS
To see if you worry too much about finances, ask yourself a couple of questions. Do you wake up worried about money? Do you check your bank balance and look at upcoming bills more than once every few days or even multiple times a day? If so, then you may have a little financial insecurity going on. Let's look at getting it under control. If it's making you crazy, it can make your family a little crazy too. This type of anxiousness is passed on to others, which is important to remember whenever you have the urge to share your fears.
TOO MUCH INFORMATION
TMI (too much information) happens because it seems that by releasing pent-up(压抑的) feelings of anxiety you will feel better and hopefully more supported. And this can happen, but not with your loved ones because they will take on your fear and magnify it. Talk instead with your financial advisor, your bank manager or your therapist. Laying your financial fears at the feet of your family is not good for them or for you. Yes, be honest about any problems, but if you get emotional, so will those closest to you.
POSITIVE ACTION
It's hard to be dispassionate about money, but honestly, it's really the best way to get this issue solved. You have to look at it from a practical standpoint. Go over your debts, look closely at your assets and determine the best thing for you to do with your time right now.
Maybe you need to use this time to get your books in order on your computer or use it to job hunt or to promote your business. Then again, you may need to hire an accountant and go on some interviews. The point is simple: the only way to relieve yourself of the uncomfortable feeling of financial pressure is to take some kind of positive action.
73. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Financial problems are not vital ones in everyone's daily life
B. You'd better calm down when you have financial problems.
C. You needn't worry about unexpected bills even if you're out of work.
D. When you have financial fears, remember to share feelings with others
74. The passage implies that
A. the best way to deal with money problem is to take positive action
B. as long as we share feelings with others, money fear will disappear
C. we should have an optimistic attitude toward financial fears
D. any problem we meet can be solved with the help of money
75. The unerlined phrase in the fourth paragraph probably means
A. to solve financial fears caused by your family
B. to help your family smartly avoid financial fears
C. to make your family responsible for financial fears
D. to encourage your family to face financial fears bravely.
76. The best title of the passage is
A. Perceptions of money and value B. Passion, money and family
C. Keeping balance of psychology D. Dealing with money worries
Section C(8')
Dlrections: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

B. Be thankful for what you have

D. You can find strengths in bettering someone else's life.
E. It's enough to make you find out how strangely unlucky you are.
F.Remember when you were a child, you could get excited by the simplest wonders of life.
Develop Your Mental Strength
Mentally(精神上) strong people are able to deal with and recover from even the most terrible conditions. To develop your mental strength, here are some suggestions.
Believe in yourself
You've made it this far. 77 Hold on to it even one more moment, and you can survive whatever you're going through. It won't be easy, so when you feel like you're about to fall apart, close your eyes, take a deep breath and remind yourself you can do it.
Rediscover your interest in life
Emotionally strong people view each day as a gift. They try to structure themselves so that the gift is taken advantage of fully. 78 --playing with leaves in the fall, drawing a small animal, or eating a sweet. Find that inner child. Be that inner child. Your ability to be mentally and emotionally strong depends on it.
79
Does every little thing anger you? Ask yourself why and whether these little things matter. Try cutting your life down to a few key values that mean the world to you, and don't worry about anything else. As Sylvia Robinson once said, "Some people think it's holding on that makes one strong--sometimes it's letting go."
Reach out to those who mean the most to you
Spend time with friends and family, along with others who are supportive and positive. If no one is available, make new friends. And if there are no friends to be found, help others who are in greater need. 80

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please. Our bus will arrive at Lake Park in a few minutes. You can feel the comfortable cool air coming from the lake. This is the favourite place for tourists in the summer, especially on a hot summer afternoon like today. This lake is one of the great wonders of nature. No one knows when and how it was formed. But people began to build houses around the lake a hundred years ago, so in this park you can have a special view of houses of all shapes and styles and colours. It is like an architecture show. In late autumn and winter, this park is the best place for bird watching. School teachers like to bring children here and they just love it.
Now our bus is driving around the lake. You can sit back and enjoy the beauty of everything here. The bus will take us to a good spot, where you can take the most wonderful photos you have ever taken.
Here we are. Please get off and watch your step. Return to the bus in twenty minutes. Thank you!
Questions:
11. What do we know about Lake Park?
12. What special view will the tourists see in the park?
13. How long will they stay here?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
There lived a happy family, the father, the mother and their cute children. The happy couple had always grown cucumbers and made sweet pickles together. The husband just loved to watch things grow. The whole family enjoyed preparing the field, planting and caring for the plants. His wife loved to make sweet pickles. She studied the best methods of preparing and preserving them. They were such a happy family and all their visitors went home with a jar of their famous pickles. People were surprised that this family had found a project to do together.
Finally, the man died. The next spring all the children returned home.
