The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the
Spring Festival celebrations.
At this festival, people often watch lanterns, which are in any size and shape you can imagine,
from animals to plants and flowers. Another activity, guessing the answers to lantern riddles gives
young people a chance to have more fun. Chinese people regard the dragon as a symbol of
auspiciousness(吉祥). So people also perform dragon lantern dances to look forward to a good omen
(征兆)of this year’s good weather and peace. Lion dance is similar to the dragon lantern dancer
delivering good wishes and good luck. Eating yuanxiao at the Lantern Festival is another tradition.
Yuanxiao is made of glutinous(黏的)rice, either solid or stuffed. The stuffing includes bean paste,

a time for unmarried men and women to meet. Watching lanterns at night was just an opportunity for
young women to find a man who attracted them. Therefore, for thousands of years, there have been a
large number of stories and poems(诗) written about these during the Lantern Festival. The famous
Song Dynasty poet Ou Yangxiu wrote the well-known lines:
Atop the willow tree hangs the moon, my date comes in the evening soon.(月上柳梢头,人约黄

20 March is a special day. It's the International Day of Happiness! The United Nations (UN) made
this day to remind everyone that being happy is important.
The idea for this day came from an Asian country called Bhutan. Leaders of the country wanted to
know how happy its people were. So, they created the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index(国民
幸福指数) and did its first GNH survey in 2008 to measure (衡量) the happiness of its people.
Bhutan’s interest in happiness caught the world’s attention. Then the UN agreed in 2012 to create
the International Day of Happiness. It chose 20 March as the date and began celebrating it in 2013.
People get joy from many things like friends, family, good health and a clean environment. Every
year on 20 March, the World Happiness Report comes out to show what makes people happy and
how happy people are in different countries around the world.
Maher Nasser from the UN helped make the International Day of Happiness. But he doesn't
believe people should only celebrate on 20 March. “I want to make every day an International Day of
Happiness,” he said.
Nasser thinks that governments can help by making their people happier and healthier. But it’s
not just up to governments. Each of us can also do things to make ourselves happier. For example,
helping others can make us feel good about ourselves and that makes us happier.
The International Day of Happiness is more than just a happy day. It’s about making a better
world together.

When you think of the sea, you may not think of Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia. But recently, the
“seafood” produced in these places has become popular, especially after Japan put nuclear-
contaminated water (核污染水) into the sea.
In Nilka county (尼勒克县) in Xinjiang, about 6,000 tons of rainbow trout (虹鳟鱼) will be
produced this year. Rainbow trout belongs to the same family as salmon (鲑鱼), which is a kind of
well-known seafood. It tastes like salmon too.
Why do farmers there choose to grow fish? The weather in some parts of Xinjiang is seldom
hot, and the rivers are fed by meltwater (融水) from the Tianshan Mountains. Water deeper than 6
meters always stays at 10 ℃. As the meltwater is very clean and cold, it’s a “comfortable” home for
fish, Li Chunyu, a worker at a fish company said.
To make sure the river stays clean, the company uses machines to clean fish waste in the water.
They also use net cages (网箱) that are good for the environment. The nets are about 51 meters wide
and lie 25 meters deep in the river.
At the same time, in Inner Mongolia, the whiteleg shrimp (南美白对虾) grows well. Saline
soil (盐碱土) covers a large part of the desert where few plants are able to grow. Farmers used to put
water from the Yellow River onto the farmland to wash away the salt. This was a waste of salty
water.
Scientists then decided to create “seawater” with the salty water by adding in some other
components (成分). Whiteleg shrimps can live well in this kind of water. They taste no different from
the same kind of shrimp that grows in the sea.
66.Rainbow trout comfortably live in ________.
A.any open water area B.warm and clean rivers
C.salty and warm oceans D.cold and clean rivers
67.People turn their eyes from Japan’s seafood to Xinjiang’s because ________.

C.people find a new ocean in Xinjiang D.Xinjiang produces all kinds of seafood
68.To avoid water pollution caused by growing fish, the company ________.
①cleans the water with machines ②grows fish in fixed water areas
③grows one kind of fish once a year ④cuts down the fish production (产出)
A.①② B.③④ C.①②③ D.②③④
69.What can you infer (推断) from the passage?
A.Life will not be different without seafood.
B.Japan shouldn’t let out nuclear-contaminated water.

Can you imagine a world without chocolate? According to chocolate makers, it could happen
if we don’t act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage — chocolate’s growing popularity and
less production of cocoa, the plant from which chocolate is made. With more and more people in
India and China loving chocolate these years, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant
diseases and little rain have reduced(减少) cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years.
What’s worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoa-producing countries are changing to
other crops such as corn or rubber. This way, the farmers can make more money.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It
is then planted in the Centre’s fields, studied and tested for another two years. Only after scientists
are certain that they’re disease-free will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else
they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts
from different cocoa plants. Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now
hope!

Weekend Activity Report
Since the start of the “double reduction” policy, students have had
more free time at weekends. So I did a survey about how the students
spend their weekends at Sunshine Middle School.
I find that almost half of the students study by themselves at home.
About 25% of them prefer to watch TV or listen to music. 20% of them
like to chat online or play computer games, while 10% of them help their
parents do housework. Only a small number of them go in for sports or
travelling.
We should make good use of our time, learning more knowledge as well
as developing our hobbies. But I don’t think it’s a good idea to spend too
much time watching TV, chatting online or playing computer games. For
our health, it’s necessary to spend more time outdoors.
