书面表达
Dear Ms. Smith,
I’m interested in taking part in the Social Practical Program of our English club. I ’d
like to volunteer at an old people’s home.
Last summer, I went to an old people’s home in our city with my classmates. I learned
that the old people there were very happy to see volunteers. They needed love and care.
As a volunteer, I will help the old people clean their rooms. Besides, I will chat with
them about the topics that interest them. What’s more, I will care about their worries and
unhappiness, so that they can live more easily. Most importantly, I will share my volunteer
experiences with my classmates and call on them to care for the elderly around us.
Yours,
Li Hua

Betty lived in a small town. Beautiful flowers were seen everywhere in the town. Because of the

activities. She was often considered as a quiet girl in the community. She felt like a wallflower and
wondered if she would go unnoticed all the time.
However, her closest friend, Fiona, was completely different. Fiona loved to communicate with
others and she encouraged Betty to change. She told Betty that life wasn’t always as beautiful as roses
and that everyone was able to make it full of roses.
With the encouragement of Fiona, Betty began to change. Instead of being a wallflower, she started
taking part in a community theater class. She took an active part in acting in the theater group. Her gift

①Does a lake on fire sound impossible? If you think that water can’t burn, you need to learn more
about pollution.
②Let’s go and see Bellandur Lake in the city of Bengaluru in India. Bengaluru is the center for
many heavy industries. Electrical and electronic goods, computer parts and parts for planes and space
rockets are produced there. Much of the waste from these and lots of the wastewater from local people
run into the lake.
③These harmful mixed things have led the lake to become covered with a thick white foam (泡沫)
that looks like snow when seen from far away. When the level of the water rises, the foam does too and
covers nearby areas, even roads. When a fire breaks out on the lake, it is both frightening and dangerous.
九年级英语试卷(共 6 页)第 4 页
People who live or work near the lake also get seriously ill because of the pollution.
④ The fire has drawn a great deal of attention recently, but burning lakes are nothing new.
Pollution mainly happens in developing countries like India today. In the past, it mainly took place in
Europe and America. Cuyahoga River, a river in America, had caught fire at least 13 times. The fire that
caused the most attention was in 1969 when oil-covered areas on the river were set on fire by sparks (火
花) from a passing train. The fire reached a height of over five floors and burned for about half an hour.
By that time, people in America paid more attention to its dangers and wanted to change.
⑤As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded in 1970 and the Clean
Water Act (1972) was put into use. This Act required all rivers throughout America be clean enough to
safely allow swimmers and fish to pass through by 1983. Thanks to these efforts, the Cuyahoga River
has never had another fire and over 60 different species of fish live in the river.
⑥ If history is a guide, will it be possible for people in India to bring an end to the pollution by
changing the laws in their country, too? Like many nations, it’s necessary to raise attention of
environmental protection among the general public. All of us must act!
26. According to the passage, lakes can catch fire mainly because of ________.
A. the rise of water level B. sparks set by a passing train
C. fire from nearby woods D. pollution from heavy industries
27. The example of Cuyahoga River in Paragraphs ④and⑤ is used to ________ to solve the problem.
A. show one possible way B. describe another serious fire
C. bring Environmental result D. show the worldwide pollution
28. The underlined words “its dangers” refer to “the dangers of ________”.
A. sparks B. foam C. pollution D. snow
29. The structure (结构) of the passage might be ________.
A. B. C. D.
30. You may read the passage in the ______ part of a newspaper.
A. environment B. sports C. culture D. travel

How to Improve Your Reading
Learning how to read well in English might not be an easy task. 31 Reading well in
English is useful for many reasons, not only for taking tests. If you want to improve your reading in
English, the following are just for you!
★ Choose right reading materials.
There are so many choices! There are textbooks and graded readers, but there are also a lot more
books you can read. 32 Here is a good rule to follow: choose reading materials where you
understand at least 80% of the content.

need to be intentional by setting a reading aim. Decide on a certain number of pages you want to read

each day. 33 To make sure your daily practice gets done, spare some time and put it in your
study plan!
★ 34
Reading can both introduce you to new vocabulary (词汇) and teach you how to use them. Many
words in English are often used together in a consistent (相互连贯的) way. Reading groups of words, or
words that go together, will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.
★ Don’t try to understand everything.
As you’re practicing your reading, you need to accept the fact that you might not understand every
single word and that’s OK! Your brain can’t learn so many new things at one time. It’s more important
to get the big picture of what you are reading. 35 .
A. Read word groups.
B. Read more and understand more.
C. Don’t choose a book that is too easy or too difficult.
D. You could also be intentional with planning a time to read.
E. But it’s something you’ll have to do on your language learning journey.
F. And you can go back to check the new things you don’t understand later.

It’s very important for us to learn about protecting the environment around us. Here is a 4R rule for
us:
▲Recycle. Bottles, waste paper, glasses, plastic and so on can easily be recycled. By doing so, we
can save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed
flat (压平) and melted (熔化), and the melted things are made for new coke cans.
▲Reduce. Millions of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses a little paper
carelessly and throw it out, soon we would not have any trees left. We should use both sides of paper.
九年级英语试卷(共 6 页)第 6 页
Reduce boxes and cups which can be used only once. Other things are also being wasted and people
don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary for us to reduce the waste.
▲Reuse. We should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give our
clothes we do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. With a family, we may pass on such
clothes to younger brothers or sisters.
▲Repair. If one of the legs of our table is broken, we can repair it instead of throwing it away. If
we want to change for better ones, it is better for us to sell the old things or give them to other people
who can use them after doing some repairing.
In a word, the more we do, the better our environment will be.
46. The passage mainly talks about__________________________________. (10个词以内)
47. According to Paragraph 2, we can save lots of time and money by recycling_______________.
