Most 15-year-olds are worrying about their math homework and trying to fit in with other kids their age. But Henry Patterson is busy running a successful online business instead.
Patterson, a teenager from Bedfordshire, a county in the East of England, started a business called Not Before Tea when he was just nine. He began by selling sweets, but soon turned to household products like wash bags and soft toys. The items he sells came from the characters of a book he wrote called The Adventures of Sherb and Pip.
Patterson’s early school years were difficult, as he didn’t do as his peers did. He saw the world differently and was rarely invited to parties or play dates. He also spoke with difficulty, which made him feel even more lonely.
But these things didn’t hold him back. To cheer himself up, Patterson gradually buried himself in designing different animals and writing interesting stories about them. His characters started to become popular. He tried very hard to express himself and talk to bigger audiences. His business has earned him 65,000 pounds (566,221 yuan) and he has spoken at the National Retail Business Awards for Teenagers.
Besides this, he does his best to keep his schoolwork as a priority (优先项). He takes his homework with him to events and does it on the train or after a presentation. Two years ago, he wrote a book called Young and Mighty. It describes his search for success and happiness. “The real point of the book is to help people my age think about how to make their way in the world,” he wrote.

“You’re too small, Ginny, you’ll never make an Olympic team,” said my first-ever rowing(划船) coach. I had just shared my dream, which was surely outsized at that point, with somebody whose opinion not only mattered, but whose emotional support could play a key role.
At that moment, I was just 20, and still an emerging athlete. I had tried out for the national team for the first time the previous year and been hurt emotionally. I lacked the height that most Olympic rowers have, not to mention much experience as an athlete, and I suffered from asthma(哮喘). But I was still shocked not just by his choice of words, but by his certainty. I left the gym in a panic. As I walked, I began to rethink my future, making room for my coach’s opinion, pushing my dream aside into a dark corner. “Maybe he’s right.” But then, another voice argued: “What does he know? Why does he get to decide?” By the time I arrived back at my apartment, I was mad at my coach and my dream was back on center stage.
Nothing came easy when it came to making that dream come true. I tried out for two more national teams and two different coaches made negative(消极的)judgment on me. But I was driven by my love of the beauty of rowing. I wanted to row among the best and I refused to stop until I achieved my goal. I made the 1980 team, although I did not get to compete at the Olympics. I kept training for four more years, and finally won silver at the 1984 Olympics.
All the effort was worth the wait. Everything I have today is a result of sticking with(坚持)that dream. I know now that great dreams need not just time to develop, but firm belief in them. If I’m not going to be my own champion for my dreams, no one else will. And I will not allow anyone else to decide for me what’s possible.
28.What does the underlined word outsized in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Hopeful. B.Moving. C.Unrealistic. D.Doubtful.
29.What did Ginny think about her future after she left the gym?
A.She accepted her coach’s judgment and gave up her dream.
B.She didn’t blame her coach for not having faith in her.
C.She became mad at her coach and decided to hold on to her dream.
D.She felt upset and changed her dream to a more realistic goal.
30.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.Ginny competed in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics.
B.Ginny refused to let her coach’s decision stand in her way.
C.the coach’s judgment made Ginny give up on his dream.
D.being judged negatively by different coaches left Ginny in doubt of her ability.
31.Which could be the best title for this text?
A.Love of Rowing. B.Fighting for the Gold Medal.

Barred owls (大林鸮猫头鹰) are a large species native to eastern North America, but they began moving west at the start of the 20th century. By 1973, large numbers of barred owls had arrived in the western state of Washington. Later they moved south into Oregon and California.
In parts of the Pacific Northwest, the owls are now believed to be causing a drop in the population of a smaller, less aggressive bird: the northern spotted owl(北方斑点猫头鹰). In many ways, the barred owl is the spotted owl’s worst enemy. The barred owl has more babies per year and eats the same animals, like squirrels and wood rats. And their numbers are now larger in many parts of the spotted owl’s traditional territory (领地).
David Wiens is a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He and other officials are doing something unusual to protect spotted owls: killing barred owls. It is an experimental program. More than 2,400 barred owls have already been shot.
Wiens is the son of a well-known bird expert and grew up with the fascination for birds. He has mixed feelings about the program. “It’s a little distasteful(使人不愉快的), I think, to go out killing barred owls to save another owl species,” he says. But he adds, “We knew that barred owls were out competing spotted owls and their numbers were growing too fast.”
To catch barred owls, officials put digital (电子的) bird callers on the ground. Then they step back and wait as several sounds from the devices fill the air. All of this happens in the dark of night. Barred owls dislike other birds in their territory, so they will fly down and chase other owls out. That is when Wiens and his team try to shoot them.
32.What’s the main problem with spotted owls?
A.They have no food. B.They have more babies each year.
C.They are hunted by man. D.Barred owls take many parts of their territory.
33.Why are barred owls being killed?
A.They are eating the spotted owls.
B.They are killing each other to survive.
C.They are putting the spotted owls in danger.
D.They are destroying large areas of forests.
34.Why did the officials put digital bird callers?
A.To kill barred owls. B.To puzzle barred owls.
C.To protect barred owls. D.To frighten barred owls.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Keeping the Balance of Nature
B.Preventing Birds from Playing Fair
C.Protecting Birds in Danger
D.Killing One Animal to Save Another
Kids’health: Four steps for fighting stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. 36 Some ways of dealing with stress—like screaming or hitting someone—don’t solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.2Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:2
Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. 37 They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
Don’t take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that’s not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don’t take it out on yourself. 38
Try to solve the problem. After you’re calm and you have support from adults and friends, it’s time to get down to business. 39 Even if you can’t solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.2012
Be positive. Most stress is temporary. Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren’t magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you’ll help yourself feel better even faster 40
A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B. Notice your friends’ feelings and find a way to help them.
C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
F. And don’t forget about your friends.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.

A Father’s Day Surprise
“Mano, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Ali asked his sister.
“Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 19 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it.” Mano replied.
“Do you have any idea how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Ali asked.
“Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas.” Mano answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their mum asked, entering their room.
“Mum, we were wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day.” Mano said.
“Oh, I am surprised you kids remembered! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully.”Mum said.
“That would be great!”said Mano and Ali together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mum went to the kitchen, and Mano and Ali started doing their homework. But soon Ali noticed Mano deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Ali, I was thinking that our parents do everything for us and in return they want nothing. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Mano replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades.” Ali nodded.
The next day, all three of them, Mano, Ali and their mum, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Mano drew a family picture with her crayons, Ali bought balloons and candles and began writing a poem which he planned to sing that day. In short, a lot of things were being planned and prepared.

Dear Caroline,
This is my first time that I have invited you to attend our program —Talk and Talk. It is ten years since Talk and Talk was established. This is an amazing program where you can share your ideas with students.
Now, when having trouble in learning English well, plenty of students urge to know how to deal with it. As our distinguished foreign language teacher, your aid can help us a lot. If you are available on this Sunday, I together with the whole Talk and Talk staff am waiting for your coming.
I’d appreciate it if you take my invitation into consideration.

One possible version:
Finally, when Father’s day came, both Ali and Mano came home from school and started decorating the house. Ali quickly cleaned the living room and continued with the decoration, putting up the colorful balloons and presenting the birthday cake. At the same time, Mano took out the family picture. They were about to practice singing the poem when the delicious smell came from the kitchen. Surely it was Mom that prepared the big meal. French toast and chicken porridge, both of which were father’s favorite dishes, were ready. Eventually, everything was settled. Ali and Mano stood beside the door, waiting for their father eagerly. Then Dad came in.
Ali and Mano cried out together, “Happy Father’s Day!” Hearing the words, so glad was Dad that his face lit up. “We have a surprise for you!” added Ali, pointing at the decorations. When he saw the dinner, his eyes widened and twinkled with excitement. He couldn’t help tasting a bit of chick soup, explaining that it was the best dish he had ever had. Mom smiled heartily and exchanged a gentle glance with Ali and Mano. What a beautiful and sweet surprise! The room was filled with happiness.

56.greater 57.achievement 58.is 59.on 60.as 61.studies 62.regularly 63.a 64.to bring 65.make
be focused on“集中于……”,故填on。
短语as...as possible“尽可能……”,故填as。
介词短语for a while“一会儿”。故填a。
be likely to do sth.
故填make。

Now, when having trouble in learning English well, plenty of students urge to know how to deal with it. As our distinguished foreign language teacher, your aid can help us a lot. If you are available on this Sunday, I together with the whole Talk and Talk staff am waiting for your coming.
