At 8 am, six women and one man in an air y barn (谷仓) in Sussex are focusing on their breathing and letting go of negative thoughts. I am one of them. But I’m struggling to remember which leg is which. All my life, I have suffered from left-right confusion. A soft voice suggesting I place my right foot over my left knee creates an anxiety that does not help empty my mind.
I have come to Fair Oak Farm for a three-day well-being break: yoga, gentle exercise and massage (按摩) , vegetarian food and peaceful walks through the East Sussex countryside. After 18 months of working in front of a computer, I’m ready to stretch, bend and strengthen my core muscles The leaders are warm and encouraging, never once making me feel discouraged.
Weeks before COVID-19 struck, the UK travel association ABTA said one in three people were planning to include wellness activities in their holiday. COVID-19 has interrupted the speed of growth, but there are signs that the market is recovering as restrictions (限制) ease. Travelling to improve one’s health is not new. For centuries people have sought the benefits of hot springs or mountain air for periods of reflection. The 21st-century wellness breaks can be eye-wateringly expensive, restricting access to people in richer countries of the developed world. But the range is enormous, with some organisations offering well-being breaks for free.
Nat Segnit, author of Retreat: The Risks and Rewards of Stepping Back from the World, said he was not surprised at the growing interest. “Half the world’s population lives in urban settlements. We are penned in, if not literally by overcrowded living arrangements then by the pressure of modern existence —overwork, family demands, social media. And more broadly by the cultural and environmental problems that press in on us daily. So we might want to get away from all that. ”
4.How does the author feel in the barn at first?
A.Uneasy. B.Confident. C.Impatient. D.Relieved
5.What does the author do during her break at Fair Oak Farm?
A.She does healthy exercise. B.She works on her computer.
C.She learns to give massages D.She enjoys her favourite food.
6.What can be inferred about wellness breaks?
A.They catch on during COVID-19. B.They have a long history
C.They are less needed now. D.They can be quite affordable.
7.What does Nat Segnit think of people living in urban settlements?
A.They are mostly addicted to social media.
B.They need breaks from their everyday life.
C.They have conflicting ideas about well-being breaks.
D.They are worried about stepping back from the world.
【答案】4.A 5.A 6.B 7.B
根据第一段中“A soft voice suggesting I place my right foot over my left knee creates an anxiety that does not help empty my mind. (一个轻柔的声音建议我把右脚放在左膝上,这制造了一种焦虑,无助于我清空思绪。)”可知,作者一开始在谷仓里因为左右不分而感到焦虑,故选A项。
5.细节理解题。根据第二段中“I have come to Fair Oak Farm for a three-day well-being break: yoga, gentle exercise and massage (按摩) , vegetarian food and peaceful walks through the East Sussex countryside. After 18 months of working in front of a computer, I’m ready to stretch, bend and strengthen my core muscles (核心肌肉) . (我来到费尔橡树农场进行为期三天的养生之旅:瑜伽、温和的运动、按摩、素食以及在东萨塞克斯乡村宁静地散步。在电脑前工作了18个月后,我准备伸展、弯曲身体并强化我的核心肌肉。)”可知,作者在Fair Oak Farm的假期中进行健康锻炼,故选A项。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Travelling to improve one’s health is not new. For centuries people have sought the benefits of hot springs or mountain air for periods of reflection. (为了改善健康而旅行并不是什么新鲜事。几个世纪以来,人们一直在寻找温泉或山间空气的益处,以进行一段时间的反思。)”可知,为了健康旅行不是新事物,几个世纪以来人们就寻求温泉或山间空气的益处,所以健康休闲之旅有很长的历史,故选B项。
7.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“ ‘Half the world’s population lives in urban settlements. We are penned in, if not literally by overcrowded living arrangements then by the pressure of modern existence —overwork, family demands, social media. And more broadly by the cultural and environmental problems that press in on us daily. So we might want to get away from all that. ‘ (“世界上一半的人口生活在城市住区。我们被困住了,如果不是真的,那就是现代生活的压力——过度工作、家庭需求、社交媒体。更广泛地说,每天压在我们身上的文化和环境问题。因此,我们可能希望摆脱这一切。”)”可知,Nat Segnit认为城市居民被现代生活的压力所束缚,所以他们需要从日常生活中解脱出来休息一下,故选B项。

This past week, Sotheby’s announced the auction in New York of Thomas Taylor’s original watercolor illustration for the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Published by Bloomsbury in 1997, the title kicked off the famous seven-book series.
In a statement shared with NPR, the auction house said the artwork is expected to sell for 400,000 to 600,000 — a record estimate for any Harry Potter-related material ever offered at auction.
Taylor’ s illustration, which describes the boy with his trademark round glasses and scar boarding the train to Hogwarts from King’s Cross Station’ s platform 9¾, was first offered at auction at Sotheby’s in London in 2001, according to the statement. At that point, there were only four published Harry Potter books, yet Pottermania was already taking hold: the artwork sold for a then-record-breaking £85,750.
Sotheby’s says it expects the return of the artwork to the auction to do better this time around, as the love for Harry Potter-related fare has only increased over the past couple of decades with the release of the Harry Potter films. In 2021, an unsigned first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone sold for $421,000 — the current record for a Harry Potter-related item.
What does Thomas Taylor himself think of his early, giant success? It was this artist’s first professional assignment.
“Normally, when you start out as an illustrator, you kind of hope that your first work will be a bit forgotten and then you’ll develop and get better and better. But in this case, this first piece of work has sort of followed me in my entire career. So I look at it and I think, ‘Why did I paint that? Why didn’t I paint something more exciting?’” But he said he’ s finally made peace with it — in part because of how valuable his Harry Potter book cover painting has become at auction.
8.What does the text say about the auction in New York?
A.It will cooperate with Bloomsbury. B.It will probably set a record.
C.It is hosted by Taylor. D.It is about books of Harry Potter series.
9.What does the underlined part “taking hold” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Necessary. B.Formal. C.Familliar. D.Popular.
10.How did Taylor feel about his first illustration in the beginning?
A.Confused. B.Excited. C.Proud. D.Regretful.
11.Where might this text appear?
A.In a newspaper. B.In a textbook.
C.In Harry Potter books. D.In a children’s picture book.

根据文章第一段“Sotheby’s announced the auction in New York of Thomas Taylor’s original watercolor illustration for the first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.(苏富比拍卖行宣布将在纽约拍卖托马斯·泰勒为《哈利·波特与魔法石》第一版绘制的原版水彩插图。)”和第二段“a record estimate for any Harry Potter-related material ever offered at auction.(这是任何哈利·波特相关物品在拍卖会上估价最高的一次。)”
根据上文“At that point, there were only four published Harry Potter books (当时《哈利·波特》只出版了四本书)”和下文“the artwork sold for a then-record-breaking £85,750. (这幅艺术品卖出了当时创纪录的85750英镑)”可知,虽然当时《哈利·波特》只出版了四本书,但“波特热”已经蔚然成风,由此可知,taking hold意为“流行的”。故选D。
10.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“But in this case, this first piece of work has sort of followed me in my entire career. So I look at it and I think, ‘Why did I paint that? Why didn’t I paint something more exciting?’(但在这个例子中,我的第一幅作品几乎贯穿了我的整个职业生涯。所以我看着它,心想,‘我为什么画那个?我为什么不画些更激动人心的东西呢?’)”可知,泰勒对自己的第一幅插图是遗憾的。故选D。

We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start?
“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills are important,” says secondary school teacher David Earl.
Your kid will probably have some idea of the terms “growth” and “fixed mindset”. Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere. This challenges a fixed mindset, the idea that a child’s ability is limited and set in advance.
Help your kid prepare for closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters by encouraging them to embrace them and understand that none of them is failure. Remind them of things they’ve overcome, suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.
Employers lay stress on all kinds of life skills, including problem-solving, leadership and creative thinking. So getting your children to think about those skills is helpful. Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.
Good grades and passing examinations may seem like the most important thing to your kid right now, but try to encourage them to also think of longer-term goals. By thinking of a long-term goal, you may be able to find areas they need to improve.
Thinking about the future can be challenging, but it’s important that your kid understands that the next step is just that one small step. It doesn’t have to be anything as huge as what career to pursue or which course to take. This is a team effort: Ask teachers, friends, or turn to experts for tips.
12.What does the growth mindset stress?
A.A child’s ability can be improved. B.Success comes only from good grades.
C.One’s intelligence stays unchanged. D.Children should avoid challenges to succeed.
13.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “embrace” in Paragraph 4?
A.Ignore. B.Measure. C.Perform. D.Accept.
14.Which of the following might the writer agree with?
A.Children should consider long-term goals instead of good grades.
B.It’s parents’ responsibility to choose their children’ future careers.
C.It’s a life skill to get along with people from different backgrounds.
D.Children should be independent of their parents as early as possible.
15.Who is the above passage mainly intended for?
A.Children. B.Parents. C.Employers. D.Teachers.
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.C 15.B
根据第三段中“Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere.(简而言之,成长心态的核心思想是智力和能力是可以培养的,有这种想法的孩子会努力寻找机会来推动自己,他们明白如果他们坚持不懈,就有可能实现他们的目标)”可知,成长心态强调的是孩子的能力是可以提高的。故选A项。
划线词embrace后代词“them”指代上文中的“closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters (闭门羹、艰难的面试和拒绝信)”,结合下文“understand that none of them is failure”和“suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.(建议他们把每一次负面的经历都看作是一个学习和成长的机会,而不是终点)”可知,文中提出要让孩子们正确看待“闭门羹、艰难的面试和拒绝信”之类的负面经历,不要把它们看作是失败,要看作是一次成长的机会,即要接受负面经历。
根据第五段中“Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.(巴克莱生活技能列出了个人未来职业生涯中重要的技能——通过视频和音频进行交流,而不是写作,以及与来自不同年代和背景的人合作)”可知,作者会赞同与来自不同背景的人相处是一种生活技能。故选C项。
根据第一段中“We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start?(我们都想给孩子最好的建议,但当涉及到他们受教育后应该探索什么道路,以及有什么职业可能性时,我们应该从哪里开始呢?)”以及第二段中“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills are important(对父母来说,最重要的是保持选择的开放性,并理解为他们配备生活技能很重要)”可推知,这篇文章主要是为父母写的。故选B项。

How to Reconnect with Nature Through Writing
Whether you’re in the wilderness or a city park, being present with other beings can be deeply rewarding. The wild is calling, and writing offers a powerful tool for re-connection. Through keen observation and warm language, we can develop a deeper connection with our environment. 16
The first step is raising a keen awareness of your surroundings. By sharpening your senses, you’ll capture the essence of a plant or place in vivid detail. Imagine describing a forest after a summer rain: What can you see? Maybe sunlight passing through the leaves? 17 Sensory details create an experience that brings both you and the reader into the heart of the forest.
Limiting your focus to one single being. This limitation creates a deeper connection between you and your fellow creature, whether a sunflower pushing through a crack (裂缝) in the sidewalk, or a strange-looking mushroom. 18 By exploring this nature-being, you gain a richer understanding and appreciation for its existence.
19 It can also be about experiencing the natural world from a different angle. Try writing a letter to your wild friend: Choose a plant, animal, or natural element. Imagine how the world might appear through the eyes and ears of them. They also have stories to tell.
Nature writing is a journey of continuous discovery. 20 Keep writing, keep exploring your local environment, and keep rewilding yourself. Share your experiences and remember, even the smallest backyard can be a place for wonder and inspiration.
A.Or do you smell the natural smell of wet soil in the air?
B.Nature writing isn’t just about humans observing nature.
C.How does a plant sense the surroundings compared to you?
D.Let’s explore some tips to set off on your wild writing journey.
E.Use all your senses to capture the unique details of one creature.
F.The following are some techniques to unlock your creative potential.
G.The practice of it can awaken a new appreciation for the world around you.

different from “与……
it是形式主语,真正的主语应用不定式形式,构成句型结构“It is +形容词+ (for sb.) to do sth.”,故填to balance。

D.Teachers.
