The first umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago. Umbrellas were used on sunny days at first. Chinese people were the first to use their umbrellas on rainy days. They waxed (给……打蜡) their paper umbrellas so that they could be used when it was raining. The word “umbrella” comes from the Latin word, umbra. It means shade (背阴). Starting in the 16th century, the umbrella became popular in the Western world, especially in northern Europe, where it often rains. At first, people thought that the umbrella was only suitable for women. Then a famous English traveler, Jonas Hanway (1712-1786), carried and used an umbrella in England for thirty years. Because of him, men began to use umbrellas. In Europe, early umbrellas were made of wood and covered with canvas (帆布). People used very hard wood to make umbrella handles. In 1852, Samuel Fox invented a new kind of umbrella with ribs (伞骨) made of steel. Samuel also started a company called English Steels Company. After that, compact collapsible (可叠) umbrellas were the next important step in umbrella production. 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 1.Was the first umbrella invented three thousand years ago? 2.Who first used their umbrellas on rainy days? 3.What did Jonas Hanway do? 4.What were early umbrella handles made of in Europe? 5.What does the writer mainly talk about? 二.(23-24九年级上·广东云浮·期末) 回答问题 请阅读下面的短文,根据所提供的信息,回答问题,并将答案写在相应题目的答题位置上。 Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to eat food, while the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean. Early chopsticks were used mainly for cooking until 400 A.D.when people began eating with chopsticks. We don’t know exactly when chopsticks were invented. There’s a research showing that they didn’t come into wide use until about 300 B.C. Chinese thinker Confucius was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal. The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule led to a big change in Chinese cooking. Food had to be cut into small pieces. This was the birth of Chinese cooking and it has made Chinese food popular around the world. However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks. Eric, a foreign teacher, had the experience of learning to use chopsticks. “I need to hold them properly to be able to put the food carefully into my mouth.” Eric’s Chinese friends taught him patiently, but it still took him months to learn this skill. “But it’s worth learning. I have learned a lot from this experience,” Eric said. Cultures can often be understood through food. For Chinese, food doesn’t just provide energy. It also brings happiness. And chopsticks also mean a lot. As a good example of Chinese culture, they show the Chinese wisdom (智慧). 1.Why did the ancient Chinese invent chopsticks? 2.Who thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal? 3.What led to a big change in Chinese cooking? 4.How do many Westerners feel about using chopsticks? 5.For Chinese, which do chopsticks show, energy or wisdom? 三.(23-24九年级上·山东淄博·期末) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题。 What’s your favorite sleeping position? On your back? On your side? How about standing up? Unless you happen to be a giraffe. I’d never have thought anyone would choose the last one. But now, thanks to a Japanese company, it could be a real competitor. Giraffe-nap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while standing when he/she feels tired or sleepy. Its purpose is to help the user improve performance at work. In an introduction to the nap box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed (恢复精神的) in just 20 minutes. But why does it have to be standing? The company explains that studies have shown that sleeping while standing allows people to reach a sleep state and they can breathe easily. When they wake up, they can feel the effect of a nap without having to sleep too much. And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (眩晕的). Also, making the box stand upright means that it takes up half as much floor space. Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person fall down if he tried to sleep while standing? Of course not. Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀部), legs and feet. That means he can rest his arms, legs and head in the box while still remaining upright. Giraffe-nap has been made in two different styles. They’re expected to go on sale at the end of next year. So when that time comes, I hope you’ll try sleeping standing up—just like giraffes do. 1.What is giraffe-nap? 2.Who invented giraffe-nap? 3.How soon will the user be refreshed in the giraffe-nap box? 4.List at least one piece of advantage about giraffe nap. 5.Why wouldn’t a person fall down if he tried to sleep while standing? 四.(23-24九年级上·江苏徐州·期末) When asked who invented the telephone, most people say it was Alexandre Graham Bell. However, in 2002 the US Congress agreed that the true inventor was an unknown Italian inventor, who died in poverty in New York. And his name is Antonio Meucci. Antonio Meucci was born in Florence in 1808. In the 1830s, he got into trouble with the rulers for his political views. After a period in prison, he decided to move to Cuba. There he continued working on his inventions. He discovered that sounds could travel through wires. In 1850, Meucci moved to the US, where he thought he would have more chances to develop his ideas. When his wife became ill, he developed a simple telephone system so that she could “phone” him from her bed while he was working. Around 1860, he showed his last invention, but because he didn’t speak English well, few people were interested. Then in 1870, he became ill himself and had to sell his plans to pay for doctors. Meanwhile, another inventor, Alexandre Graham Bell was working on a similar idea and the rest is history... 注:每题答案不超过5个单词 1.Who is the true inventor of the telephone according to the passage? 2.Was Antonio Meucci rich or poor when he passed away? 3.What did Antonio Meucci discover when he was in Cuba? 4.When Meucci showed his last invention, why were few people interested? 5.What does the underlined part “a similar idea” refer to? 五.(23-24九年级上·广东肇庆·期末) 请阅读下面短文,根据所提供的信息,回答5个问题,要求所写答案语法正确、语义完整切题,并把答案写在答题卡指定的位置。 How much time do you spend on the Internet? But in fact, some clothing companies are making such clothes. Fashion (时尚) brand JUMA recently showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing items from the collection, including jackets, shirts, jumpsuits and dresses, were made from plastic bottles. “Billions of water bottles are being thrown away every year and these bottles will take hundreds of years to break down. We thought we should use them to make our clothes and help protect the environment,” said Alia Juma from the company. Many other fashion companies are using similar ways to save our planet these days. It’s quite simple to change plastic into clothing. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are heated and changed into small balls. The balls are heated again to produce thread (线). People can then use the thread to make different kinds of clothes. Usually, four bottles can be used to make one pillowcase, five a shirt, ten a dress and twenty a short coat. Some people might have questions about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But actually clothes made from plastics could be even better than those made from nylon and polyester. And plastic thread can be made into different textures (质地) . The price of such clothes is high now, from 500 to 3, 000 yuan. However, Juma believes that prices will fall when more companies follow in her footsteps. 1.What’s JUMA’s purpose in making clothes out of plastic bottles? 2.How do people change plastic bottle pieces into small balls? 3.How many plastic bottles are needed to make a dress? 4.Which paragraph tells us about the advantage of clothes made from plastics? 5.In Juma’s opinion, what will happen if more companies make clothes out of plastic bottles? 十七.(22-23九年级上·山东淄博·期末) In the Middle Eastern country of Syria (叙利亚), there are over 4 million refugees (难民). Youssef was 10 years old when a local Syrian musician discovered his talent: a deep, powerful voice. However, Syria’s civil war (内战) took place. He and his family lost their home. When the Action for Hope Music School announced that it was looking for talented children to train, his family encouraged him to attend the school. A year and half later, the now 14-year-old, Youssef, with another 11 children, was chosen to take part in a concert. Youssef, a shy boy, was a lead singer in the concert. He gave a confident performance of traditional Syrian songs. “We only heard the sound of a mortar (迫击炮). It fell near us. Many buildings fell down. That is all I remember”, said Youssef. “Music makes me forget everything. Music is the most important thing.” Basma, director of Action for Hope, said the music school offers strength to the children who suffer from the war. They can find a good way to comfort themselves and stop thinking of themselves as refugees. “Art gives strength. More specifically (确切地), the giving of gifts and the culture surrounding them. Coming from the US, I have found gift-giving to be quite different in China compared to my home country. One example is the timing of when to open a gift. In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (the “giftee”) open the present as soon as they get it. They want to see their reaction (反应) of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the gifter for the gift and open it later in the privacy (私密). Another aspect (方面) I found different was the openness and directness (直接) of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually done very secretly with the money put in a card and not discussed out loud. In China, money will be put in a flashy (显眼的) red envelope and given to giftees an open and direct way. Finally, the monetary value (金钱的价值) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement. But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的). Besides, they will also get a sense of having to return the favor (恩惠) in the future to the gifter. So, the next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meaning are part of every action we take. 1.When do people in the US open a gift ? 2.To be polite, what will a Chinese giftee do after getting a gift? 3.What does the author think of the way Chinese people give money as gifts? 4.Is it OK to send gifts with high price in the US? 5.How do Chinese people feel when they receive expensive gifts? 十九.(22-23九年级上·湖北黄石·期末) 阅读短文,按要求回答问题。 No one knows exactly when jazz was invented, or by whom. But it is said that it began in the early 1900s. Jazz was a new kind of music, for America and the world, and New Orleans was its birthplace. Who were the jazz pioneers? Most were blacks. This music was not written down, and at first only blacks played it. It was hard for white musicians to learn the new style. But soon they were playing jazz too. The popularity (普及) of this music spread. From New Orleans, it traveled up the Mississippi to Chicago, then to Kansas City and New York. By the 1920s, there were many jazz musicians, both black and white. Many of them were famous. One man was better than the rest. His name was Louis Armstrong. Louis Armstrong was a born musician. He was not only talented but also hard-working. He also had a good sense of humor. These personal qualities (个人品质) were valuable in his rise to fame (名气). After he became famous, he traveled around the world. It seemed that everyone wanted to hear Louis play. But life was not always easy, especially at the beginning. Louis Armstrong was born in 1901 in New Orleans. His father never went to school and his mother could hardly read. When Louis was still a kid, his parents separated, and Louis lived with his mother. 【答案】1.To keep their hands clean. 2.Confucius. 3.The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule. 4.They find it difficult to use chopsticks. 5.They show the Chinese wisdom. 【导语】本文主要介绍了筷子的由来,使用和影响。 1.根据“the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean”可知古代中国人发明了筷子来保持手的清洁。故填To keep their hands clean. 2.根据“Confucius was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal.”可知孔子是筷子历史上的一个重要人物,因为他认为如果人们在吃饭时用刀,和平就不会出现。故填Confucius. 3.根据“The ‘no-knives-on-the-table’ rule led to a big change in Chinese cooking.”可知“禁止在餐桌上用刀”的导致了中国烹饪的巨大变化。故填The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule. 4.根据“However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks”可知许多西方人发现很难使用筷子。故填They find it difficult to use chopsticks. 5.根据“As a good example of Chinese culture, they show the Chinese wisdom”可知筷子展示了中国人的智慧。故填They show the Chinese wisdom. 【答案】1.It is a nap box. 2.A Japanese company. 3.In 20 minutes. 4.They can help people quickly return to work without feeling dizzy. 5.Because inside the box are four points to support the body. 【导语】本文介绍了一家日本公司发明了一种名为Giraffenap的产品,可以让人站着休息,目的是提高工作表现,这款产品预计将在明年年底开始销售。 1.根据“Giraffe-nap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while standing when he/she feels tired or sleepy.”以及“When they wake up, they can feel the effect of a nap without having to sleep too much.”可知,这是一个午睡盒。故填It is a nap box. 2.根据“But now, thanks to a Japanese company, it could be a real competitor.”可知,是一家日本公司发明的午睡盒。故填A Japanese company. 3.根据“In an introduction to the nap box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed (恢复精神的) in just 20 minutes.”可知它可以让用户在20分钟内恢复精神。故填In 20 minutes. 4.根据“And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (眩晕的). ”可知,午睡盒可以让人们很快恢复工作而不会感到头晕。故填They can help people quickly return to work without feeling dizzy. 5.根据“Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀部), legs and feet.”可知,因为盒子里面有四个点来支撑身体。故填Because inside the box are four points to support the body. 四.(23-24九年级上·江苏徐州·期末) When asked who invented the telephone, most people say it was Alexandre Graham Bell. 【答案】1.Prople open a gift immediately. 2.They open the gift later in the privacy of the giftee’s home. 3.The author thinks the monetary value of the gift can play a big role in China. 4.Yes, it is. 5.It can make the giftee feel awkward. 【分析】本文讲的是中国和美国在送礼方面的差异。 1.根据文中“In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (the “giftee”) open the present as soon as they get it.”可知美国人会立即打开礼物,故填 Prople open a gift immediately. 2.根据文中“In China, however, it’s more polite to thank the gifter for the gift and open it later in the privacy (私密).” 可知在中国,更礼貌的做法是感谢送礼物的人,但收礼者稍后在家中私下打开礼物,故填They open the gift later in the privacy of the giftee’s home. 3.根据文中“The monetary value (金钱的价值) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US.”可知作者认为礼物的金钱价值在中国会发挥重要作用,故填The author thinks the monetary value of the gift can play a big role in China. 4.根据文中“An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement.”可知,在美国,一份昂贵的礼物是让人兴奋的,此处应进行肯定回答。故填Yes, it is. 5.根据文中“But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的).
