A small ginger-haired (红头发的) boy ran over to him. “Come and play with us, Mr Football,” he said. “Not today, Terry. Maybe tomorrow.” “OK,” said the boy, and he ran back to join the game. Gary thought how it all seemed to be so easy. He was a fool. He thought it was going to be easy, and that’s why he never really made an effort. He was a fool. Mr Steele was right. He needed more than ability to be a professional footballer. He needed to work hard and be committed (专注的). Everyone had made an effort to help him, and he had let them down. He shouldn’t have been so sure of himself, and he shouldn’t have been so lazy. Everything was a complete disaster - the jobs, his schoolwork, his friendships. Rick was right. He was a loser. He looked at his watch. He was already twenty minutes late for his lesson with Laura. But then he thought, “I’m already a loser. I’ve got nothing to lose. There’s still a chance. There’s always still a chance.” He stood up and walked across the park, then he started to run. He ran fast. He ran all the way to Laura and Matt’s house. Mrs Kelly opened the door. She looked surprised to see him. “Hello, Gary! We thought you weren’t coming,” she said. Laura was in the hallway. She was putting on her jacket. “Gary! I was just going out with mum.” “I’m sorry,” said Gary. “I promise I won’t ever be late again. I’d like you to give me a lesson... if it’s not too much trouble. You see, I really want to pass that test.” Laura looked at her mother. She took off her jacket. “You go without me, Mum,” she said. “Gary and I have got work to do.” “I haven’t seen Gary all week,” said Karen. “I saw him yesterday in the Science lab,” said Joe. “He was helping the teacher.” “That’s very strange,” said Karen. “Do you think he’s all right?” “He’s spending a lot of time with Laura at my home,” said Matt. “And she’s helping him prepare for the Academy entry test.” Gary sat at the dining room table in Matt’s house. He looked worried. Laura sat on the opposite side of the table. She was correcting Gary’s Maths homework. She looked worried too. Then she looked at Gary. “Well?” he said. “It’s brilliant,” she said. “You’re brilliant. You got everything right. I mean, just one small mistake.” She looked doubtful for a moment. “Did someone help you?” “You did,” said Gary. “I couldn’t do it without you.” Laura blushed. “I think you can pass this test, Gary. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. At first, ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian symbols existed (存在), but only Chinese characters are still in use today. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at how these characters developed. Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time. However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays. Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other. Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way. In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people, which would increase literacy (读写能力) across the country. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland. 54. How did the writer introduce the Chinese characters? A. By giving examples. B. By providing causes. C. By expressing opinions. D. By comparing (比较) facts. 55. The sentence “Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.” would best be placed at the beginning of _________. A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 2 56. What can we learn from the passage? A. Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before. B. Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people. C. Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together. D. Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols. 57. What might be the best title for the passage? A. How to form Chinese characters. B. The history of the Chinese language. C. The development of Chinese characters. D. The difference between Chinese and Western language. 【答案】54. A 55. B 56. B 57. Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time — about eight hours after you get up — your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer (遭受) less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers (雇主) do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap — even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful. 78. Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon? _____________________________________________ 79. How do people spend the early afternoon in warmer climates? _____________________________________________ 80. Why don’t many working people have any time to take naps? _____________________________________________ 81. At that time — about eight hours after you get up — your body temperature goes down.”可知在下午早些时候感到困倦是因为那时你的体温会下降。故填Because your body temperature goes down at that time. 【79题详解】 根据“In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. I’m never going to need a fraction in my whole life.” “Let’s not worry about fractions right now. Instead, would you like to help me make cookies?” “Okay.” Ella said. “Here. You put the ingredients in the pan and I will cook them.” Mom placed sugar, milk, peanut butter and some measuring cups close to the pan. “First, put one full cup of sugar into the pan.” Ella gently pulled out a full cup of sugar and poured it into the pan. “Good” Mom said. “Now, I need a little more. I need three-fourths of a cup. That is more than half of the cup, but not all the way to the top. Fill it halfway first.” Ella filled the cup halfway full. “Okay. Now, see that line a little way up? That is three-fourths of a cup. Add enough sugar until it reaches that line.” Ella put a little more sugar into the cup until it reached the line. “Great! Pour it into the pan. Next, we need one-half cup of milk. Here is the measuring cup. Fill it to the half cup line with milk.” Ella slowly poured one-half cup of milk. “Now I have to cook it for one and a half minutes. After that, all we need to do is to add one teaspoon of vanilla and one-half cup of peanut butter.” Mom turned to Ella. “I see what you are doing. You are showing me I need to understand fractions,” Ella said with a smile. Mom laughed. “And you were understanding! You just need a little more practice.” “Okay. I understand now. Some children were playing football on the grass. You see, I really want to pass that test.” Laura looked at her mother She took off her jacket. You’ve got a real talent.” “For football,” said Gary. “For Maths,” said Laura. (Adapted from Mr. Football) 51. Why did Gary think of himself as a fool in the beginning? A. D The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. D Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols. 57. What might be the best title for the passage? A. How to form Chinese characters. B. The history of the Chinese language. C. The development of Chinese characters. D. The difference between Chinese and Western language. 第Ⅱ卷 主观题(共50分) 五、词汇运用(本大题共10小题,每小题1分,共10分) (A)根据句意和汉语注释,在答题卡对应题号的横线上写出单词的正确形式。 58. 78.
