Throughout the day there will be plenty of live performances. Martial artists will perform in Trafalgar Square and many food stands will line the streets. People looking for entertainment designed for children can head to Lecester Square, where they'll likely find amazing activities, including sugar painting and dressing up opportunities.
Where to eat
In Chinatown there are plenty of top options. Dumplings’ Legend on Gerrard Street and Gold Mine on Wardour Street are best for excellent dumplings.

Liz Pichon, known for her bcstselling Tom Gates series for children, shares the books that shaped her.
The Bad Speller by William Steig
Reading this as a child was a life-changing moment. Although I loved reading, I found it quite difficult. My mum had an American friend who bought me this book because she knew how much I struggled with spelling, and she thought it would make me laugh. It really did. And it stuck in my memory a lot. Even now, it’s one of those books that never seems to age. I love the drawings—they planted a seed in my head somewhere that pictures and words go together and can be really funny.
Silly Verse for Kids by Spike Milligan
This book is so tiny and thin, but I loved that it had all these silly poems inside with rich attractive drawings—and it made me want to write rhymes, and to have a go at drawing. After buying this in a local bookshop, I started reading it. And after finishing reading it, I started writing my own poetry. I’m always including silly poems in my books and I think that’s definitely down to the influence of this book.
Jaws by Peter Benchley
This book has a particular meaning for me. In school, I had a teacher who didn’t have a television. It made me think when I had to come up with a story for my homework, I could just change the plot of Jaws a little and he’d never know. When he read it, he thought it was amazing. I tell that story to children now, because copying other people’s stories is a great way of learning how to do things—by seeing how other people do them.
21. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain three bestsellers of Liz Pichon. B. To sell Liz Pichon’s favorite books.
C. To introduce three life-changing books. D. To promote Tom Gates series for children.

23. What do The Bad Speller and Silly Verse for Kids have in common?
A. They’re both difficult to read B. They both have wonderful drawings.
C. They’re both given as a present. D. They both contribute to Liz’s spelling.
24. What particular meaning docs the book Jaws have for Liz Pichon?
A. It taught her to do things by copying. B. It helped her get along with her teacher.
C. It made her fall in love with drawing. D. It planted a seed of reading in her head.

A. On the best-seller list. B. In the comic column of a newspaper.

If you’re feeling in the mood for grilled food but don’t have a barbecue, then deciding what product to purchase can be a bit difficult. So to help you get a better understanding of just some of the choices available, here’s our guide to buying a new BBQ.Charcoal vs Gas
The first decision is how your BBQ is going to be powered. There are essentially two main choices: the traditional way with charcoal, or the quick and convenient way with gas. For those who get frustrated with the process of lighting coals and waiting for them to reach the desired temperature, then gas is the easy option. It’s clean and gets up to temperature in an instant. But for many, the main fun of a barbecue lies in the back-to-basics cooking that hot coal brings natural barbecue fire. You’ll also find a far greater range of charcoal barbecues.Size
For anyone who likes to throw a garden party with a busy barbecue at the centre of the action, there are some vast grills(烤架)available. But unless you’re regularly feeding the masses, then these BBQ beasts can be impractical. Smaller meals are better suited to smaller equipment, so be realistic about the size that best suits you.Open grill or lid
While facing the barbecue selection of your nearest retailer, you’ll notice that some of them have lids. These will usually be round and will make you pay more than the lidless options. But if you want the benefit of being able to cook larger items over a longer period of time, such as a whole chicken, then a lid will be essential.
21. Which BBQ is suitable for Jack, who likes back-to-basics cooking and often invites friends to the garden party?
A. Gas barbecue in small size. B. Gas barbecue in big size.
C. Charcoal barbecue with big grills. D. Charcoal barbecue with small grills.
22. What is the difference between the open grill and the one with a lid?
A. The open grill costs more. B. The open grill looks superior.
C. The open grill is more reliable. D. The open grill is less suitable for larger items.
23. Which column of the magazine is the passage most likely selected from?
A. Lifestyle. B. Business. C. Culture. D. Sports.
【答案】21. C 22. D 23. A

22.细节理解题。根据Open grill or lid部分的“But if you want the benefit of being able to cook larger items over a longer period of time, such as a whole chicken, then a lid will be essential.(但如果你想在更长的时间内烹饪体积更大的食物,比如整只鸡,那么盖子将是必不可少的)”可知,开放式的和带盖式的烤架的区别在于前者不太适合体积较大的食物,故选D项。

We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County. Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.
24. Why does the author mention an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough at the very beginning?
A. To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.
B. To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences.
C. To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.
D. To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.
25. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film?
A. Her adoption picture. B. Her flat-out smiling.
C. her personality and ability. D. Her miserable experiences.
26. By saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph, Buhler probably means _______.
A. the dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it
B. it took quite a lot of trouble for the dog to change her own fate.
C. she’s really excited to see the dog she helped live such a happy life
D. the dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality
27. What do you think may serve as the best title of the passage?
A. The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home” B. From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star
C. The Trainer and Her Star Dog D. Shelby’s Hard-luck Story
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. B
【语篇导读】这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了一只垃圾小狗到成为一名电影明星的引人注目的经历。
24.推理判断题。根据第一段We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.
One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”大多数影评都赞扬了谢尔比的表演。Variety评论道:“一只神奇的狗,完美的表演!”和最后一段Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,”谢尔比从垃圾场一路走来。
From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star.(从垃圾小狗到电影明星)为最佳标题,故选B。

One of the improv(即兴表演)classes I attended regularly was taught by Jim Cranna every Saturday afternoon. Sometimes, as many as twenty-five to sixty-plus folks showed up. Jim made sure to fit everyone in so they could improve their skills. The class lasted for three hours. The usual cast of comic actors played improv comedy games. And we would go to the nearest mini market located in the building and get a snack or coffee during breaks.
One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin William—an internationally famous actor and comic walked by, enjoying the fresh bay air. Completely frozen, my fellow comics couldn’t summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend. I froze for a moment, but then I composed myself.
I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath, “Yeah, sure, right. You’re going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class. Good luck with that one!”
So I went up to Robin and his friend and asked him to join us. “We’re having an improve comedy class. We’re on break now, but we would be most humbled and honored if you would join us for the second half of the class.” Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation, “Okay.” It was like a grown-up child being asked to come and play. With that, he and his friend followed me up to the class.
When he saw Robin, Jim said, “Oh my goodness, look who Micheline is bringing to class.” Jim’s eyes were all in astonishment and delight. “Why, it’s Robin Williams!” “Robin and his friend stayed the rest of the class and at the end of the class, Robin and Jim performed a skit(滑稽短剧). We actually watched him shape-shift as he prepared physically and mentally for his made-up character. He gave it his all. It was truly magical.”
What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn’t gathered up the courage to ask Robin to join us, none of us would have had that experience.

B. Jim Cranna was waiting for Robin Williams to come to the class.

24.词义猜测题。根据划线单词上一句“I froze for a moment(我愣了一会儿)”以及下一句“I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.”(我告诉他们,“嘿,如果你们搞不定,那我就叫他来和我们一起上下半节课。”)” 可知,作者一开始也不太敢上前邀请罗宾·威廉斯,但是后来还是开口了,说明作者是稳定了一下情绪。由此推知,划线词compose与B项:calm down(冷静下来)的意思接近,故选B项。
25.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath, “Yeah, sure, right. You’re going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class. Good luck with that one!”(我对他们说:“嘿,如果你们搞不定的话,那我就请他来和我们一起上下半节课。”我能听到他们低声嘟囔着:是啊,当然,没错。你要邀请罗宾·威廉姆斯来上我们的喜剧课。祝你好运!)”以及后文可知,作者和同学们偶遇著名喜剧演员却都不敢上前打招呼,最后作者鼓起勇气开口打招呼,并邀请这名喜剧演员为他们上戏剧课。结果该喜剧演员不仅毫不犹豫地同意了作者的请求,还给他们展示了精彩的表演。结合最后一段“What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn’t gathered up the courage to ask Robin to join us, none of us would have had that experience.(那个星期六下午我们大家都很高兴!我只知道,如果我没有鼓起勇气邀请罗宾加入我们,我们都不会有这样的经历)”推知,文章想告诉我们的是敢于迈出尝试的一步,就有可能成功,即勇敢的尝试是成功的一半,C. A brave attempt is half success(勇敢的尝试是成功的一半)符合题意,故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第二段“Completely frozen, my fellow comics couldn’t summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend.(我的喜剧演员同伴们完全愣住了,没能鼓起勇气向罗宾打招呼,罗宾身边还有一个朋友)”和第三段的“I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.”(我告诉他们,“嘿,如果你们搞不定,那我就叫他来和我们一起上下半节课。”)”可知,作者的同伴见到著名喜剧演员罗宾·威廉斯时全都愣住了,甚至不敢上前和他打招呼,更不敢鼓起勇气邀请罗宾,故选D项。
27.推理判断题。文章第二段“One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin William—an internationally famous actor and comic walked by, enjoying the fresh bay air.(有一天,我们三个人站在大楼外面,国际著名演员兼喜剧演员罗宾·威廉斯走过,享受着海湾的新鲜空气)”提到,罗宾·威廉斯很出名;再根据第四段“Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation, “Okay.”(罗宾直视着我的眼睛,毫不犹豫地说:“好的”)”可知,作者邀请罗宾·威廉斯为他们上课的时候,他毫不犹豫地答应了,由此可知,罗宾·威廉斯是个平易近人的人,故选A项。

At the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, among mountain songs and ethnic costumes and special ceremonies, I am noticeable despite my modern dress, as my green “VOLUNTEER” nametag brands me as a perfect target for curious tourists. I have volunteered to learn about global customs; my knowledge of my native culture is limited. I had boxed up my past before moving to America eight years ago, when a new continent considered my old self foreign.
Here on the National Mall, I am the only means of communication between the Americans and the artisan(工匠), who were invited from China to display their talents. They see my awkward hand gestures as I test my mother tongue, speaking Mandarin(普通话)and putting it into English for visitors.
The artisans possess exceptional skills. He Guoyao can read thousands of pictographic characters(象形文字)and bears the duty of passing on Dongba culture. Cheng Zhirong creates fantastic animal figures with a spoon and melted sugar in minutes. Standing among them, I wonder about the contributions a 16-year-old girl can make.
“Ooh, it’s so pretty!” A young girl sticks her nose close to a sugar dragon. Zhirong, the candy maker, signals to me, and I explain to the girl that the dragon is pure sugar. “Mommy, it’s candy!” she excitedly says. “Beautiful...” The crowd breathes in awe. One woman taps me on the shoulder, saying, “Please, tell her that her work is surreal... a gift from another world.”
As Zhirong takes my hand and calls me “little sister”, I find my place in this group of extraordinary people who crossed oceans to build a bridge between different ethnicities and nationalities through sugar sculptures and painted words. I, too, am a bearer of traditions.
I smile at Guoyao, as he paints in pictographic characters the English words I have taught him, “You’re welcome.” I come to know that culture is not shelved behind glass cases in museums. It is in the life that I once thought backward and dull—the Chinese way of life that is a part of me.

In the summer of 1969, six-year-old Mike Massimino watched wide-eyed on the television as Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon. He immediately made his mom turn his elephant school play costume into that of an astronaut for Halloween.
As a child attracted by the universe, he dreamt of becoming an astronaut. But his wish caught up with him when he realized he didn’t have the ideal skillset to make it as an astronaut: He was afraid of heights, had poor eyesight and couldn’t swim.
Given all of Massimino’s difficulty in qualifying as an astronaut, he worked for a different career. However, when the Challenger exploded, Massimino decided he wouldn’t wait any longer to realize his dream.
NASA’s elite program of astronaut s introduces a new class every couple of years. If you don’t make it, you won’t be considered again until the next round. Massimino first applied(申请)to the program in 1989. Eight months later, he received his rejection(拒绝)letter in the mail. Unsurprised, he began carrying out space research, working toward his PhD in engineering at MIT. He applied again two years later for the 1992 astronaut class. He got rejected again. Years later, for the class of 1995, Massimino’s application turned out unsuccessful. The interview was as tough as one would imagine.
Massimino failed because of something he could not change—not having 20/20 vision(视力). He didn’t stop there. After extensive research, he had vision training for nearly a year, having taken advice from others in the space science field, helping his eyes focus more clearly on objects(物体)in front of him.
Sending out his fourth application to NASA like a shot in the dark with a note from his eye doctor on his improvements, Massimino got a call. They would let him retake his eye test. He passed.
“Making a decision to give up on my dream after coming so close was unthinkable,” he said, “One in a million is not zero. I knew that if I gave up, I would always wonder what would have happened.”
24. What impressed Massimino at the age of six?
A. The invention of television. B. A school play in Halloween.
C. Armstrong’s moonwalk. D. The explosion of the Challenger.
25. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. NASA’s program of astronauts. B. Massimino’s working experience at MIT.
C. NASA’s interview process. D. Massimino’s three unsuccessful applications.
26. How did Massimino improve his eyesight?
A. By receiving vision training. B. By having an eye operation.
C. By focusing his eyes on big objects. D. By following his parents’ advice.
27. Which of the following can best describe Massimino?
A. Clever. B. Determined. C. Thoughtful. D. Generous.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. A 27. B
根据第一段“In the summer of 1969, six-year-old Mike Massimino watched wide-eyed on the television as Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon. He immediately made his mom turn his elephant school play costume into that of an astronaut for Halloween.(1969年夏天,6岁的迈克·马西米诺在电视前睁大了眼睛,看着尼尔·阿姆斯特朗迈出了登月的第一步。他立刻让妈妈把他的大象学校戏服改成了万圣节的宇航员戏服)”可知,六岁时让Mike Massimino印象深刻的是宇航员尼尔·阿姆斯特朗在月球上迈出的第一步,故选C。
25.主旨大意题。根据第四段“If you don’t make it, you won’t be considered again until the next round. Massimino first applied(申请)to the program in 1989. Eight months later, he received his rejection(拒绝)letter in the mail. Unsurprised, he began carrying out space research, working toward his PhD in engineering at MIT. In late spring and early summer each year, tens of millions of butterflies come out of their chrysalises(蚕蛹)in the butterfly valley in southwest China’s Yunnan province. For butterfly expert Yang Zhenwen, it is the busiest time of the year, but he greets it with great enthusiasm.
Before the break of dawn, Yang has already arrived at the observation point, busily tending to the needs of the awakening butterflies. “Due to warmer temperatures, the ‘butterfly explosion’ this year occurred slightly earlier than usual, and the size of the butterflies is larger than that in previous years,” said 46-year-old Yang, curator(馆长)of the butterfly valley museum. “We expect that there will be about 80 million to 100 million butterflies in the valley during this year’s ‘butterfly explosion’. That seems so crazy,” said Yang. According to Yang, in the valley, more than 320 butterfly species have been identified in specimens or photographs, including the rarest, most primitive, largest and smallest butterflies in China.
Besides Yang, many local villages have also assumed the role of butterfly guardians. However, the journey toward achieving human-butterfly harmony was far from easy. Some two decades ago, the villagers had little awareness of butterfly protection, believing wrongly that butterflies could endanger their food crops. They viewed them as pests that should be removed.
In 1998, Yang began his journey at the agricultural science station in Ma’an’di Township, the very place where the butterfly valley lies. “It was there that I got into a frequent dilemma—the local villagers, seeking to protect their crops, would often turn to pesticides to kill the butterflies,” he said. “However, my sincere love for these creatures forced me to prevent them from harming the delicate insects.”
Now, the development of ecotourism relying on butterfly resources has successfully changed the once extremely poor township. More villagers have started reproducing butterflies. He describes the butterfly valley as a “dream-making machine”, which extends the “butterfly dream” of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
24. What made Yang’s aim to reach human-butterfly harmony hard in the beginning?
A. Warm temperatures in local villages. B. The number and size of the butterflies.
C. Improper location of the butterfly valley. D. Lack of awareness of butterfly protection.
25. What does the underlined word “dilemma” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. A choice difficult to make. B. A fact easy to understand.
C. A duty hard to carry out. D. A situation smooth to deal with.
26. Which of the following best describe Yang Zhenwen?
A. Honest and professional. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Hard-working and strong-willed. D. Generous and easy-going.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Changing the Poor State of a Town B. Volunteering as a Butterfly Guardian
C. Helping Butterflies Spread Their Wings D. Developing a Relationship with the Locals
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. C
【语篇导读】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了蝴蝶专家杨振文多年来致力于保护蝴蝶,描述了他为蝴蝶的保护工作付出的努力。
24.细节理解题。根据第三段“Some two decades ago, the villagers had little awareness of butterfly protection, believing wrongly that butterflies could endanger their food crops. They viewed them as pests that should be removed.(大约20年前,村民们对蝴蝶保护知之甚少,错误地认为蝴蝶会危害他们的粮食作物。他们认为它们是应该消灭的害虫)”可知,缺乏保护蝴蝶的意识让杨想要达成人与蝴蝶和谐的目标在一开始变得困难,故选D。
25.词义猜测题。根据划线词后文“the local villagers, seeking to protect their crops, would often turn to pesticides to kill the butterflies”以及“However, my sincere love for these creatures forced me to prevent them from harming the delicate insects”可知,一方面当地村民为了保护自己的庄稼,经常使用杀虫剂来杀死蝴蝶,另一方面杨振文对这些生物真挚的爱迫使他阻止他们伤害这些脆弱的昆虫。即他面临一个很难做出的选择。故划线词意思是“一个很难做出的选择”,故选A。
26.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In 1998, Yang began his journey at the agricultural science station in Ma’an’di Township, the very place where the butterfly valley lies.( 1998年,杨在蝴蝶谷所在的马安地乡农业科学站开始了他的旅程)”以及最后一段“Now, the development of ecotourism relying on butterfly resources has successfully changed the once extremely poor township. More villagers have started reproducing butterflies. He describes the butterfly valley as a “dream-making machine”, which extends the “butterfly dream” of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.(如今,依托蝴蝶资源开发生态旅游,成功地改变了这个曾经极度贫困的小镇。越来越多的村民开始繁殖蝴蝶。他将蝴蝶谷描述为“造梦机器”,延伸了人与自然和谐共处的“蝴蝶梦)”可推知,杨振文工作努力,意志坚强,故选C。
27.主旨大意题。根据第一段“In late spring and early summer each year, tens of millions of butterflies come out of their chrysalises(蚕蛹)in the butterfly valley in southwest China’s Yunnan province. For butterfly expert Yang Zhenwen, it is the busiest time of the year, but he greets it with great enthusiasm.(每年春末夏初,在中国西南部云南省的蝴蝶谷,数以千万计的蝴蝶从蛹中出来。对于蝴蝶专家杨振文来说,这是一年中最忙的时候,但他却以极大的热情迎接它)”结合文章主要介绍了蝴蝶专家杨振文多年来致力于保护蝴蝶,描述了他为蝴蝶的保护工作付出的努力。可知,C选项“帮助蝴蝶展翅”最符合文章标题,故选C。

The day when a freshman moves into Harvard Yard is always said to be an enjoyable one and this was certainly true of my first day at the university: As my parents and I drove into the Yard, I looked at the wonderful scene and thought to myself “No freshman should be so lucky”!
I’m sharing a flat with four other girls. We are all completely different in terms of background, beliefs, and interests—we reflect the diversity(多样性)that Harvard is so proud of During this first week, it’s a comfort to have four girls I can call friends and that can help me deal with the new situation which is quite difficult at times.
Deciding what classes to take is the first step. At Harvard, the only necessary class for freshmen is a writing class—I’m actually able to take any classes I desire this year and the range of classes is amazing! How do I decide? Thankfully, Harvard allows freshmen to try classes during the “Shopping Week”. Classes meet at their regular times, and we’re able to attend as many(or as few)as we want. If I finally decide to take a course, I’ll be held responsible for any work done during the “Shopping Week” . On the other hand, if I find a class doesn’t suit me or the professor is boring, I can decide not to take it!
All of these first-week experiences will make great life-time memories but the greatest treasure Harvard has offered me thus far has been the other students I’ve met. Every time I see someone either singing a moving song at an A Capella Concert, giving an amazing violin performance at a talent show, or saying something extremely inspiring in one of my classes, I’m blown away! Knowing and interacting with so many gifted people is what has made my first week at Harvard a truly priceless experience. One week down, four more years to go —I can’t wait!
24. Why does the author feel it a comfort to have the four roommates?
A. They share the same flat with the author.
B. They have much in common with the author.
C. They help the author adapt to the new life at Harvard.
D. They reflect the diversity that Harvard is proud of.
25. What are freshmen expected to do through the “Shopping Week”?
A. Go shopping every day. B. Determine what courses to take.
C. Attend a writing class. D. Meet classmates on a regular basis.
26. According to the author, what is the best part about being a Harvard student in the first week?
A. Taking part in a talent show. B. Staying with talented schoolmates.
C. Performing a moving song. D. Enjoying the activities Harvard offers.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. My first week at Harvard B. A truly challenging experience
C. Choosing courses for the future D. Tips on being a freshman at University
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. B 27. A

B(原卷为D篇)
Two days before I had a heart attack, I’d been leading an expedition(探险). I was 37, and active. Even when I got to hospital, I hardly believed I was having a heart attack, but I was rushed into an operating room.
When I came out of hospital three days later, I could barely walk and was put into cardiac rehab(心脏康复)with a group of 85-year-olds. But I believed I needed something else to heal(治愈)me. As an outdoors guy who could make stone tools and live off the land, I knew that was where I needed to be. And so, after several treatments, I thought, “I’m out of here!” and went to live in a cave, near where I could hunt animals and drink from streams.
I spent about six months changing between a traditional life and living in the Colorado wilderness. I didn’t want to be away from my family for too long, so I would come back often to connect with them.
I was becoming part of the pattern of life that existed in the wild, understanding the sounds and the smells. You can choose to fight it, or to try to control it, but when you accept it, you reach a deeper understanding of who you are and what you’re doing out there. The day of my heart attack changed my life, because it was a reawakening. Knowing that eventually one day you will die, you need to live the life that you want, find the value.
For all the time I still spend in the wilderness, social media has actually become a big part of my life. Before my heart attack, I was never on it, but, afterwards, people encouraged me to start a YouTube channel sharing my skills. Now I’ve written books, done reality shows and consulted for movies. I’ve embraced this element of modern life, and hope to fuel people’s curiosity about the natural world.
Many of us accept life just the way it is, but there are some who want something different. Luckily, I am the latter one.
24. Why did the author go to live in a cave?
A. To heal himself. B. To avoid the old people.
C. To lead an expedition. D. To practice survival skills.
25. What may the word “reawakening” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Living the life you want. B. Accepting life as it is.
C. Fighting for an easy life. D. Bringing life under control.
26. Why is the author on social media now?
A. To report the process of his recovery. B. To share outdoor survival skills.
C. To kill time while in the wilderness. D. To fuel curiosity about modern life.
27. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A cave that impressed me B. A strong desire for modern life

I can’t miss the little old lady with her kerchief(方头巾)on her head, a black umbrella blowing all over. I can tell she is freezing. She is standing at a bus stop, and I’m driving by, late for my early morning shift. I decide to stop and offer her a ride.
Of course, she declines, but when I ask again and insist, finally, she gets in the car. I take her to her destination, and by the time she gets out of my car, she is smiling and thanks me.
I was late for work that day, but I was so glad that I stopped. That was 40 years ago, and the beginning of a new habit, one that continues when I’m out driving in bad weather.
If there’s someone at a bus stop, especially if it’s an elderly person waiting at off hours and in bad weather, I will pull over and ask if they need a ride.
Once, a young doctor jumped in. She had finished a long shift and had been waiting and waiting at the bus stop. She had no hesitation and, for the first time, I was able to help someone who performs miracles(奇迹)on a daily basis. That felt good.
But the best part of my ride offers is the conversation. I do tend to ask a lot of questions: where are you from, where are you going, family, background, pets and whatever else comes to mind. Surprisingly, everyone wants to chat. We are usually laughing by the time the ride is over. “What a shame!” I often think when they hop out, as the stories were just getting started.
Now as retirement approaches, I believe I have found my calling. I will be happy to join a community driving program to take people to one appointment or another—or perhaps just to the coffee shop to sit and listen for an hour.
As the years pass, perhaps I will be the one standing at the bus stop. Perhaps there will be somebody who rolls down a window and offers me a seat for a little ride. I will continue to take that leap of faith in the kindness of strangers.
24. What are the first three paragraphs mainly about?
A. How the author started offering rides. B. The value of the aut$$

A. Lifestyle. B. Business. C. Culture. D. Sports.

This year I did something I’d never done—shopping at midnight on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. After all, you can get great deals online from the comfort of your bed over a hot cup of coffee. So why would I stand traffic, cold weather and crowds for a few bargains?
For my teenagers, spending time with Mom is usually down on their list next to homework and picking up the dog waste. So, when they asked me to take them shopping at the mall at midnight on Black Friday, my first reaction was definitely no! But my son, who usually runs the other way if I mention shopping, wanted me to take him shopping. I felt needed, though I knew it was my wallet and a ride, not quality(高质量的)time with Mom that they wanted.
Then the hour-long car ride. We followed songs on the radio and talked about the deals we hoped to get. I had opportunities to give them lessons on what not to do when driving, but I had to keep the peace. And we all connected as we sat with crazed smiles at midnight.
The kids scanned for a spot once we finally reached the busy parking lot. There was something about standing in a line that snakes around the building in the freezing cold that brings people together. Once inside, we had to work as a team, hoping to come together with just the right size and color. As I dug through mountain s of clothing for a particular shirt for my husband and gave up, my daughter came toward me, shirt in hand and victory on her face. “I got the last one!”
So we ended up at 3 am with some bargains. Nothing we couldn’t have found online or in stores at a reasonable hour. But for me, I got quality time with my kids. Driving home tired, looking in the mirror at my children’s sweet faces, I decided, “If they ask me to go again next year, I’m in.”

A. Tiring. B. Enjoyable. C. Heart-broken. D. Money-wasting.

Lloyd Black, who became a member at Anytime Fitness in Semmes, Alabama, last year at age 90, was named as the club’s Member of the Month for January.
Ashley Seaman, the gym’s general manager, congratulated Black in a Facebook post that went viral(走红). “We have seen nothing but inspiration from him since he started,” Seaman wrote in the post along with a photo of Black wearing his overalls(工装裤). “He says he is 91 years young and talks about how much his workout routine has helped him in his daily routine. Seeing someone like him encourages others to keep it up and include fitness in their life. Seeing him in the gym three times a week working out in his overalls brightens our day.”

Tens of thousands of honeybees in Spain’s Canary Islands can now add “survived a volcano(火山)” to their wish list.
A report on Saturday told the story of five hives(蜂箱)of honeybees that were left unattended after the eruption(爆发)of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, which happened on September 19, for about 50 days(their beekeeper had been forced to leave the area). When the beekeeper returned, he found the hives covered in volcanic ash(灰).
Inside the hives, however, the situation was completely different. To the beekeeper’s surprise, he found tens of thousands of live honeybees, who had managed to carry on despite the heat and harmful gases released by the volcano. They may have also gotten lucky because they were covered with light ash with small holes, which allowed air to pass through the hives.
Not all honeybees on La Palma were so lucky, though. Spanish news service EFE reported that a group of hives closest to the Cumbre Vieja had been covered completely by lava, hot volcano matter, which killed them.
Antonio Quesada, a spokesperson for the GranCanaria Beekeepers Association, said that a key part of the bees’ survival was propolis(蜂胶). Produced by bees, propolis is a sticky thing made from resins(树脂)the insects collect from plants. Often called “bee glue,” propolis is often used to smooth surfaces or cover the space in hives.
Quesada said the La Palma bees managed to seal(密封)themselves inside their hives to protect themselves from the volcanic gases, which can be harmful to people, animals, plants, and buildings. The bees also thought about food and ate from the honey stores they had inside their hives.
“It’s unbelievable how such a tiny animal that has been around for hundreds of thousands of years can have that ability to survive,” Quesada said.
That’s not all they did, though. Although they sealed themselves in their hives, they made sure to leave a very small pathway to the outside so they could get out one day.
24. What might the underlined word “unattended” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Dead. B. Lucky. C. Alone. D. Homeless.

B. His bees remained alive under the volcanic ash.
C. His bees warned him of the eruption of the volcano.
D. His beehives remained unchanged in the volcanic lava.
26. What does Quesada think about the five hives of bees?
A. They’re fearful. B. They’re unlucky. C. They’re honest. D. They’re admirable.
27. What is the best title for the text?

The announcement that Indhu Rubasingham is to be the artist director of the Royal National Theatre(NT)in 2025 has been met with cheers, within the industry and without.
Workmates at the Kiln theatre in Brent, where Rubasingham has been director since 2012, describe her as inspiring, risk-taking and tough. Rufus Norris has called her “an exceptional artist who I respect and admire hugely”.
Rubasingham may be the NT’s female artistic director and the first person of colour in the role, but her own achievements contribute to her position. From a theatre with just 292 seats, she has commissioned(委托)and created productions of international quality. There has been Florian Zeller’s trilogy The father, The Mother and the Son and her production of Zadie Smith’s The Wife of Willesden. A recent success is Ryan Calais Cameron’s civil rights story Retrograde.
Rubasingham is not new to National Theatre: as Norris says, “it’s a place she knows well, having directed successfully in each of the three theatres”. However, it’s a big leap from the 292 seats of the Kiln to the challenges of NT, with 2,450 seats, plus outreach, educational and digital programs. All this has to be done against the worst financial(金融的)situations since the NT was founded in 1963. Today, any director of a national arts organization in the UK faces a hard time, with the financial black hole left by the pandemic(疫情).
Rubasingham, however, is all about the artists: the play-writers and actors and many other creative talents who make her theatre what it is. That’s the special talent she brings to this position. She herself has described it as “the best job in the world”.
24. What can we learn about Rubasingham from the first two paragraphs?
A. She is envied by Rufus Norris. B. She is welcomed to take the position.
C. She doesn’t get along with workmates. D. She has moved from the Kiln to the NT.
25. Why are Rubasingham’s productions listed in Paragraph 3?
A. To praise her success in directing. B. To promote her works internationally.
C. To introduce her understanding of art. D. To show her relationship with play-writers.
26. What challenges will Rubasingham face in her new position?
A. The pandemic. B. Little experience. C. Lack of money. D. Technological problems.
27. Which of the following best describes Rubasingham?
A. Expert and creative. B. Flexible and generous.
C. Energetic and efficient. D. Well-meaning and well-rounded.

When my teenaged son became seriously ill, terrible times for my family began. Our once-happy home became tense and depressed. My husband and I were exhausted under the great stress of caring for my son. It was as if we forgot how to communicate-we couldn’t have a simple conversation without a fighting. Our marriage was on the point of breaking up.
One evening, my son and I were talking about gifts. I recalled my first Valentine’s present from my husband, a kazoo. I was awkward when I received it because I couldn’t get it to make a sound although I am a professional saxophone player. However hard I tried, it just never worked. The kazoo eventually got packed away and forgotten. But my son was interested and insisted on seeing it. After some trouble, I found it.
“You couldn’t get a sound? What’s so hard about it?” my husband asked, amazed. He took the kazoo and blew. Nothing happened. Surprised, he tried again. Still there was no sound. Frustrated, he tried again, only to produce a funny sound like an angry bumblebee trapped in the mouth of a bear. We burst into laughter. My son took a turn to play the kazoo. He did no better than us, causing more laughing.
Seeing his face light up, we felt as if the darkness had lifted and a ray of sunshine was let in. It was the best ten minutes of the past couple of years. 26. What is the turning point of the story?
A. My failure to get the kazoo to make a sound.
B. The involvement of my husband in playing the kazoo.
C. My memory about the Valentine’s present from my husband.

Another person’s enthusiasm—the strong wish and interest to do everything, was what set me moving toward the success I have achieved. That person was my stepmother.
I was nine years old when she entered our home in the countryside of Virginia. My father introduced me to her with these words: “I would like you to meet the fellow who is well known for being the worst boy in this county and will probably start throwing rocks at you no later than tomorrow morning.”
My stepmother walked over to me, raised my head slightly upward, and looked at me right into my eyes. Then she looked at my father and replied, “You are wrong. This is not the worst boy at all, but the smartest one who hasn’t yet found a way to give out his enthusiasm.”
That statement began a friendship between us. No one had ever called me smart, my family and neighbors had built me up in my mind as a bad boy. My stepmother changed all that.
She changed many things. She persuaded my father to go to a dental school, from which he graduated with honors. She moved our family into the county centre, where my father’s career could be more successful and my brother and I could be better educated.
When I turned fourteen, she bought me a secondhand typewriter and told me that she believed that I could become a writer. I knew her enthusiasm, and I saw how it had already improved our lives. I accepted her belief and began to write for local newspapers and finally reached the goal she set for me. I wasn’t the only beneficiary. My father became the wealthiest man in town. My brother and stepbrothers became a physician, a dentist, a lawyer, and a college president.

A. She praised him from the bottom of her heart.
B. She gave some writing lessons to him at home.
C. She moved the family into the centre of the county.
D. She planned the future for each family member.
26. What does the author mean by “I wasn’t the only beneficiary”?
A. There were other boys who behaved as badly as he did.
B. His stepmother bought typewriters for other family members, too.
C. Not only he but also his family gained from his stepmother’s enthusiasm.
D. Other family members’ enthusiasm has great effects on his stepmother.
27. Which of the following is best the title of the passage?
A. Enthusiasm, a Power for Success B. Enthusiasm, a Challenge for All
