At the age of 16, I lived with my parents at an institute 18 miles from Durba n with no neighbors around. One day my father needed a ride to town for a conference. Meanwhile, my mother gave a list of groceries and my father asked me to take care of several pending chores, such as getting the car serviced. When I dropped my father off that morning, he said, “I will meet you here at 5: 00 p. m., and we will go home together. ”
After hurriedly completing my chores, I went straight to the nearest movie theater. I got so engrossed that I forgot the time. By the time I ran to the garage and got the car and hurried to where my father was waiting for me, it was almost 6: 00 p. m. He anxiously asked me, “Why were you late?” I was so ashamed of telling him I was watching a movie that I said, “The car wasn’t ready, so I had to wait,” not realizing that he had already called the garage. When he caught me in the lie, he said, “There’s something wrong in the way I brought you up that didn’t give you the confidence to tell me the truth. In order to figure out where I went wrong with you, I’m going to walk home 18 miles and think about it.”
So, dressed in his suit and dress shoes, he began to walk home in the dark on mostly unpaved, unlit roads. I couldn’t leave him, so for five-and-a-half hours I drove behind him, watching my father go through this agony for a stupid lie that I uttered.
I decided then and there that I was never going to lie again. I often think about that episode and wonder, if he had punished me the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a lesson at all. I don’t think so. I would have suffered the punishment and gone on doing the same thing. But this single action was so powerful that it is still as if it happened yesterday.
4. Why did the author drive to the town?
A. To watch a hit movie. B. To buy some groceries.
C. To give his father a lift. D. To get the car serviced.
5. What did the father decide to do after finding the author lying?
A. Reflect on his parenting. B. Blame the author severely.
C. Ignore the author’s behavior. D. Punish the author immediately.
6. How did the author feel when he drove behind his father?
A. Relieved. B. Annoyed. C. Intolerable. D. Regretful.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. You don’t have to choose a day to lie. B. It’s better to lie than to admit a mistake.
C. Do not do to others what you don’t like to do. D. Non-violence is powerful in teaching a lesson.

On September 9, 2024, Apple released its latest iPhone 16 series at an event called “It’s Glowtime”. At the event, Tim Cook, the company’s CEO, played up the promise of the phones’ AI features in a pre-recorded video.
Indeed, the demonstration seemed impressive. When Cook pointed the camera at a restaurant, the AI assistant Siri could tell him what was on the menu. It also could answer his questions fairly well and learn about the users from their interactions with their devices. For instance, Siri could know if a user’s mother was calling and acted appropriately.
Apple is one of many firms that want to take AI beyond huge data centres, known as the cloud, and run it on smaller devices, known as the edge. Samsung, Apple’s major competitor, launched its Galaxy S24 with some AI features earlier this year. So did Microsoft, which has launched Windows PCs designed for AI. But their efforts have shown that it is not easy to shift cloud-based AI models to the edge devices.
At present, cloud-based AI models are mostly trained on graphics processing units (GPUs) that consume so much energy that it can take a nuclear-power plant to fuel them. They also need huge amounts of memory and data. All these can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Even once they are trained, running these AI models is costly. According to one estimate, it costs OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, 36 cents every time someone asks its AI model a question.
Companies are experimenting with various solutions to these problems. Apple will offer on-device AI to deal with the easiest tasks, but send trickier problems to the firm’s private cloud. The service will direct the most difficult requests to third-party models such as ChatGPT. But even such smaller on-device AI models require a lot of computing power to run, which puts huge stress on the edge devices’ batteries.
“Making the technology work could not only start a supercycle in device sales, but also create new opportunities for apps and digital advertising,” says Neil Shah of Counterpoint, a research firm. “But for the moment, edge devices are barely ready for basic functions, let alone Glowtime.”
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The Glowtime event. B. iPhone 16’s AI features.
C. Tim Cook’s performance. D. The future of AI phones.
9. Why are Samsung and Microsoft mentioned in the text?
A. To tell readers how bad competition can be.
B. To warn Apple of the potential consequences.
C. To compare their newly released edge devices.
D. To show how hard it is to apply AI to edge devices.
10. What is the problem with cloud-based AI models?
A. OpenAI charges too much money.
B. All of them have to be trained on GPUs.
C. It is too expensive to train and run them.
D. They can only deal with the easiest tasks.
11. What does Neil Shah most probably imply?
A. iPhone 16 is bound to disappoint its users.
B. AI phones’ success will depend on new apps.
C. Sales of AI phones will increase greatly soon.
D. Tim Cook was not honest with the AI features.

Recent research indicates that Ice Age cave art, dating back as far as 40,000 years, may have been partially influenced by a visual psychological phenomenon still experienced by humans today.
The research team, led by Dr. Izzy Wisher at Aarhus University, tested the theory that cave artists may have experienced pareidolia (空想性错视) — a psychological phenomenon where people see meaningful forms in random patterns, such as seeing faces in clouds. They investigated whether pareidolia may have influenced the artists who painted animals in the caves in Northern Spain.
The research found that 71 percent of images studied in the caves showed a strong relationship to the natural features of the cave wall, suggesting pareidolia may have been a partial influence on the artists. Examples included where the curved edges of the cave wall were used to represent the backs of animals such as wild horses. The research also found the majority of the images lacked additional details such as eyes or hair, which correlates with the simplistic nature of imagery influenced by pareidolia.
The research team, also investigated whether lighting conditions in the caves at the time the artwork was created might have contributed to the potential influence of pareidolia. To do this, Dr Wisher used a virtual reality gaming software called Unity to model the cave walls and the light sources used by the cave artists. The results showed that low and unstable lighting conditions did not have a strong connection to cave art that uses natural features.
Dr. Wisher argues that the influence of pareidolia was evident in some, but not all, of the artwork, suggests that cave artists may also have been actively looking for shapes that reminded them of animals within the caves to incorporate into their drawings, as part of a dialogue between the artist’s personal creativity and the forms seen in the cave walls. The team believes their study offers the first systematic testing of this theory, and is the first to use simulated lighting conditions in virtual reality to achieve this.
12. What does the research focus on?
A. How people survive Ice Age.
B. Why psychology matters in life.
C. When cave art came into being.
D. What impacts Ice Age cave art.
13. What can we know about pareidolia?
A. It promotes artistic creation.
B. It is created to test art theories.
C. It is an ancient painting technique.
D. It causes big psychological problems.
14. What do the underlined words “correlates with” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Cooperates with. B. Agrees with.
C. Brings up. D. Makes up.
15. What may Dr. Wisher think of their research?
A. Ground-breaking. B. Good for nothing.
C. Far from successful. D. Of great practical use.

It was a bright spring afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51, and his13- year- old daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down on the 1. 4- mile, two- lane Route 90 bridge, which crosses the shallow waters of the Assawoman Bay.
Talking and laughing, the Bauers enjoyed their journey as they headed home. “Ava,” Bauer said, “you know what? I’ve gotten my boat stuck here a time or two. The water is too shallow!” He added that it was about the depth of 1. 3 meters. Before Ava was able to ask about more details of her father’s amusing experience, a crash disturbed everything.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup (轻型货车) was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror, it was out of control, running into a concrete barrier, spinning like a top, and flipping over the SUV directly ahead of them. Eventually, it came to rest hanging over the railing of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path and managed to pull up. “Ava, are you OK? ” he asked. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt.
Suddenly, a desperate scream came from the pickup. Having told Ava to stay where she was, Bauer got out of his car to check on the pickup. The driver’s door flung open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground and then pointed down, saying something in Spanish. Bauer ran up beside him and saw a car seat in the water. Next to it was a girl about two years old floating on her back.
Thankfully, the girl was near the coast. However, matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t move. Maybe he was in shock.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

6. How did the author feel when he drove behind his father?
A. Relieved. B. Annoyed. C. Intolerable. D. Regretful.
7. What can we learn from the text?

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A

【答案】The girl was terrified, kicking and screaming. Bauer knew too well about the danger of jumping into such shallow water, but he had no alternative. He couldn’t give up the girl. After a deep breath, he climbed onto the railing and took a leap of faith. Fortunately, he didn’t hurt himself. Without hesitation, he made his way to the girl, lifted her out of the water, and carried her onto the coast. Meanwhile, the pickup driver engaged in the rescue and called the emergency services.
Minutes later, an ambulance arrived. When the girl was given a medical exam on the spot, Bauer breathed a sigh of relief. Despite the fact that she fainted from extreme panic, the girl was not severely injured and came to herself soon. So grateful was the pickup driver that he gave firm handshakes and hugs to Bauer with tears streaming down his face. If it hadn’t been for Bauer, this accident would be a lifelong nightmare to him. It was Bauer’s kindness that made all the difference.
