good好的;old旧的;expensive昂贵的;modern现代的。由下文“It wasn’t electric or gas-powered. It was called ‘pushing power’”可知,作者的割草机不是电动的,也不是汽油动力的,而是靠人力推动的,所以它是旧的。故选B。
【3题详解】
句意:它被称为“推力”,因为你必须推它才能移动。
though虽然;if如果;while当……时;because因为。由“It was called ‘pushing power’”和“you had to push it to make it move”可知,此处表示因果关系,即因为它必须推才能移动,所以被称为“推力”。

由“I had enough money to buy a gas-powered mower”可知,作者买了汽油割草机,所以他可以更快地工作,赚更多的钱。故选A。
picked up捡起;searched for寻找;gave up放弃;turned off关闭。由下文“I explained that it was such hard work using a human-powered mower”可知,作者向女士解释了使用人力割草机很辛苦,由此可知此处女士是问作者是否放弃了那台旧的手动割草机。
由“I gave you the job was because of that old lawn mower”可知,此处表示女士给作者这份工作的原因之一就是因为那台旧割草机,所以选reasons。
由“it doesn’t make a big noise”和“I’ll let you cut my grass if you use that old mower”可知,此处表示旧割草机不会污染空气,也不会发出噪音,所以女士才让作者用旧割草机给她割草。
由“I’ll have to come back later with the old one”可知,作者没想到女士会因为旧割草机没有噪音和污染而让他继续使用,所以他感到惊讶。故选D。

One day, a father and his son went to a kite flying festival.
When they arrived, there were already many adults and their children playing in the park. When the son saw the sky filled with colorful kites in different shapes, he was excited and wanted to get one too. His father agreed to buy one for him. So they went to a kite shop and chose a beautiful one.
With the string (线) in hand, the son started to fly the kite. Soon, the kite was high up in the sky. After a while, the son said, “Father, it seems that the string is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, it will be free and fly even higher. Can we cut it?” The father didn’t reply, but just cut the string off the reel (绕轴). Suddenly, the kite began to go higher, which made the son much happier. However, to his surprise, the kite was coming down. They waited for quite some time. Slowly, it fell onto the grass. The son felt upset and asked, “I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it fall down?” The father smiled and said, “The role of the string was not stopping the kite from flying higher, but helping it stay in the sky, because the kite itself can’t fly up.”
By using the string you help the kite go up in the right direction. When you cut the string, it could not support the kite. In our life, we may sometimes feel like there are certain things that are holding us back and stopping us from growing. But in fact, these might be the things that support us most. We can really grow up and become stronger by realizing the importance of these things.
14. Why did the father and son go to the park?
A. To make a kite. B. To watch others fly kites.
C. To attend a kite flying festival. D. To play with other children.
15. What did the son think the string was doing to the kite?
A. Helping it fly higher. B. Stopping it from flying higher.
C. Making it more beautiful. D. Keeping it from falling down.
16. Why did the kite fall down after the string was cut?
A. Because there was no wind. B. Because it was too heavy.
C. Because the string was needed to support it. D. Because the son didn’t fly it properly.
17. What might the writer of this story want to tell us?
A. Kites need strings to fly high in the sky. B. We should always listen to our parents.
C. Some things seem to hold us back but help us. D. Flying kites is not an easy activity.
C 15. B 16. C 17. C

A new study has found that people who use facial (面部的) expressions often are more popular and better at negotiating. Negotiating means discussing something with others to reach an agreement.
At Nottingham Trent University in England, researchers studied more than 1,500 conversations between people. They set up video calls to record people’s natural reactions and expressions. They used a system called FACS to measure how expressive people’s faces were. Then, they showed the recordings to 170 people and asked them to rate (评定等级) the popularity of the people in the videos from their facial expressions.
In another part of the study, researchers recorded video conversations between 1,456 strangers and studied their expressions. On average (平均), people made 71 facial movements per minute. After the conversations, the people who had been talking to each other had to rate how much they liked each other. The results showed that those with more expressive faces were more liked by their conversation partners.
During the conversations, the people were also given a negotiation task. The more expressive people usually got better results. The researchers believe that using facial expressions makes people look more friendly and helps them connect with others. They also think that being expressive is important for solving disagreements successfully.
Professor Bridget Waller, who worked on the study, said the research may explain why humans have developed more complex (复杂的) facial expressions than other animals. Waller added that facial expressions are not just to show feelings, but also a way of communicating alongside words.

Judy often helped out at her dad’s restaurant, but today felt different-she needed to serve customers. Excited, yet nervous, she carefully carried a pork steak (猪排) to Table 6. Her excitement quickly turned to anxiety (焦虑) when she saw Kassy, a popular girl from school, sitting there with her friends. Feeling shy and afraid, Judy ducked (弯下身) behind the front desk to avoid being seen.
Though an excellent student, Judy often felt out of place among her rich classmates. She remembered how Kassy used to laugh at her and worried that others might do the same to her for working at a restaurant. When Judy’s dad found her hiding, she didn’t know what to say. He suggested that she should take a break.
Turning back to the kitchen, Judy felt bad for letting her dad down. To her surprise, Mary, one of Kassy’s friends, came over and said that she knew how mean (刻薄的) Kassy could be. She also praised Judy for her hard work. This gave Judy the strength she needed.
With confidence, Judy returned to the dining area and brought the bill to Kassy’s table. When Kassy tried to make fun of her, Judy and Mary did a silly “crab dance” and laughed together. As she crossed the dining room, Judy realized she didn’t feel embarrassed (尴尬的). Whether Kassy liked her family’s restaurant or not, it didn’t matter.
As Judy returned to the front desk, she felt a warm sense of pride, knowing the restaurant was special to her, no matter what others thought. She understood that hard work and kindness were what really mattered. From then on, she started to enjoy her new role with confidence and pride.
54. How did Judy feel when she saw her classmates at Table 6?

21 What’s the passage mainly about?

Judy often helped out at her dad’s restaurant, but today felt different-she needed to serve customers. Excited, yet nervous, she carefully carried a pork steak (猪排) to Table 6. Her excitement quickly turned to anxiety (焦虑) when she saw Kassy, a popular girl from school, sitting there with her friends. Feeling shy and afraid, Judy ducked (弯下身) behind the front desk to avoid being seen.
Though an excellent student Judy often felt out of place among her rich classmates.
