Wildlife Shelter Carer
Every year, hundreds of thousands of native animals are injured, orphaned or become sick, often because of interaction with people or pets.
Our wildlife shelters in Australia are unsupported. Privately owned in Australia, our wildlife shelters have rescued sick, injured and orphaned native Australian wildlife for many years and loved them back to health to be returned to the natural environment.
Since we receive no recurrent (周期性的) funding from governments, the shelters rely on the contribution of volunteers and donations from the public to keep it running.
The Location
Shelter 1: Located in a small rural community in the east part of the Riverina on a working farm. The Riverina is an agricultural region of south-western New South Wales, Australia, just near the Victorian border. The Riverina is distinguished from other Australian regions by the combination of flat plains, warm to hot climate and an ample supply of water for irrigation. This is a farm style homestay, living and working hands on with the project hosts on a daily basis.
Shelter 2: Located on a beautiful mountain top near the coastal city of Gladstone, Queensland. Marine activities are the lifeblood of the city sitting at the central part of the Great Barrier Reef. This project has separate fully equipped volunteer quarters set in the natural landscape. Apart from animals in care, there are often wild kangaroos, birds and other animals seen on the property.
Our Volunteers
Volunteers play a key role in wildlife rescue and care. Not only will you be learning new skills and helping animals in need, you will also make new friends from around the world and will create an enriching experience for yourself.
21. What is the task of wildlife shelters in Australia?
A. To rescue native animals in trouble.
B. To serve as wildlife research centers.
C To provide a vacation spot for tourists.
D. To offer a place for people to keep their pets.
22. How are the wildlife shelters in Australia funded?
A. Through government financial funds.
B. By charging visitors for entry.
C. By cooperating with businesses.
D. By relying on charity donations.
23. What type of environment is Shelter 2 located in?
A. A coastal city. B. A mountain top.
C. An agricultural farm. D. A busy urban area.

What started with a few painted rocks has turned into a movement that’s lifting spirits and spreading love across Brevard County and beyond.
Jen Justiniano began painting rocks as a way to cope (处理) with anxiety following a hurricane, posting photos of her creations on social media. At the same time, her friend Carrie Cerve was sharing positive messages on the platform, encouraging others to spread kindness. When Cerve came across Justiniano’s rock posts, she was inspired.
“I just felt like today was the day to throw out some kindness, and reminders that you, as one person, can make a difference,” Cerve said.
That spark (火花) led the two women to create a private group called Brevard Rocks FL. What they thought would be a small circle of friends quickly turned into a hit. Within weeks, the group grew to 1,000 members, and today, it boasts an incredible 41,500 members, with more joining every day.
The concept is simple yet powerful: Members paint rocks with uplifting messages like “Be kind” “Spread kindness” and “Love”, then hide them around the community. Those who find the rocks often feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude, leading them to join the group and share their stories.
One of those touched by the movement is Coleen Carlson of Viera. During a particularly difficult time in her life, Carlson discovered a pink-painted rock with the word “Warrior” on it outside a doughnut shop. The message resonated (引起共鸣) deeply with her.
“I burst into tears and knew the rock was meant just for me,” she said. “I kept the rock for several years, until I had a friend going through a rough time too. I gave her the rock, and she cried with me. She moved away, and I have no idea if she kept it or passed it on, but whoever painted it has no idea how special it was.”
24. What was the initial purpose of Jen Justiniano painting rocks?
A. To start an online community.
B. To ease the mood after a disaster.
C. To encourage others to spread kindness.
D. To create a new art form for social media.
25. What does Cerve think of Justiniano’s works?
A. Boring. B. Puzzling. C. Interesting. D. Encouraging.
26. How may those people finding the rocks react?
A. They may ignore the rocks. B. They may throw them away.
C. They may become kindness sharers. D. They may leave where they are.
27. Why does the author mention Coleen Carlson of Viera?
A. To prove the impact of the group. B. To describe her background in detail.
C. To explain her personal challenges. D. To show her love for rock paintings.

Companies and institutes are currently working on biotechnological processes for the production of dairy (奶制的) products without the use of cows: In so-called precision fermentation (发酵), egg and milk proteins are produced with the help of bacteria or yeasts (酵母). This results in foods such as milk or cheese with a familiar flavour and texture.
Supporters hope that this will lead to more sustainable food production, as nutrient-rich proteins can be produced using fewer resources. But will consumers accept such products? Researchers at the University of Gӧttingen have found that a large proportion of German consumers are willing to try and buy cheese produced in this way.
The study is based on a representative online survey with around 2,000 participants. The researchers analyzed how various aspects of information affect the acceptance of cheese produced in this way. They analyzed the potential opportunities and risks of the technology, including its relation to sustainability, impact on agriculture and product quality.
In general, information has only a minor influence on whether consumers would try or buy cheese from precision fermentation. Only the reference to the technological genetic modification (改变) of the materials required for the production process leads to a slightly significantly lower willingness to try the product.
Respondents were also confronted with the potential advantages and disadvantages of this technology. It was found that emphasising the consistently high quality of the products and advantages in terms of the environment and animal welfare in particular increased the willingness to try such cheese.
The situation is different when consumers are informed about possible risks, for example that farmers could lose their source of income due to the new technology or that large companies could exert too much power on the market. These aspects reduced the willingness to buy and pay for such cheese the most.
“Our study shows that consumers in Germany are open to cheese from precision fermentation if they are informed about the benefits and high quality of the product. However, it is important to design the communication carefully to address concerns about the impact on traditional agriculture,” explains first author Dr Sarah Kuhl, Chair for Marketing for Food and Agricultural Products at the University of Gӧttingen.
28. What is the primary goal of precision fermentation in dairy production?
A. To create a new type of bacteria for dairy.
B. To increase the variety of cheese flavors.
C. To produce dairy products without the need for cows.
D. To develop a new market for yeast-based products.
29. What might lower willingness to try cheese from precision fermentation?
A. Risks of the technology. B. The environmental benefits.
C. Preference for traditional dairy. D. Lack of understanding of the process.
30. What does the underlined word “exert” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Lift. B. Apply. C. Maintain. D. Refuse.
31. What message did Dr Sarah Kuhl want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Product quality matters much.
B. Environmental benefits are vital.
C. Traditional farming will be replaced.
D. Balanced communication is important.

Adults who continuously played organized sports through their youth have fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who never played or those who dropped out a new study finds. “And those who dropped out of sports had poorer mental health than those who never played at all. But many more people drop out of youth sports than play continuously until they are 18.” said Chris Knoester, professor of sociology at The Ohio State University.
“If you play and stick with sports, it’s a positive for your mental health, but if you play and drop out it seems to be negative — and most kids drop out,” Knoester said. The study showed that most people dropped out of sports because they weren’t having fun or felt they weren’t good enough. “That suggests ways youth sports can be improved to help kids,” said study lead author Laura Upenieks.
“Our findings about why kids drop out of organized sports suggest that the current environment is less than ideal for everyone, and that the barriers to participation need to be given greater attention,” Upenieks said.
“It is easy to see why sports can be good for those who are able to continue with it to adulthood,” Upenieks said. “The longer that youth are exposed to a positive and encouraging sporting environment, the more likely they are to develop habits that are conducive to longterm mental well-being, such as a commitment to regular exercise and collaborating with others as part of a team.
The fact that so many kids quit shows that organized sports often don’t provide a positive environment. But there are steps adults can take to improve that environment.
For one, sports should be safe for kids. The researchers said the fact that 8% said they were abused by coaches is particularly alarming. “And the finding that nearly half of kids quit because they weren’t having fun and about a third dropped out because they felt they weren’t good enough should also be a wake-up call,” Knoester said.
“We need to improve youth sports so that it supports positive experiences for everyone and makes it more enjoyable,” he said.
32. What can we say about dropping out of sports?
A. It has no impact on physical health.
B. It’s beneficial to mental health.
C. It keeps players playing into adulthood.
D. It is worse for mental health than never playing.
33. What is one of the main reasons for kids dropping out of sports?
A. They don’t get joy from exercise. B. They prefer individual activities.
C. They are not physically fit enough. D. They are not academically related.
34. What is key to improving the youth sports environment?
A. Reducing the number of coaches. B. Adding fun to youth sports.
C. Changing the rules of sports. D. Providing more training partners.
35. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Reason Why Kids Quit Sports
B. The Benefits and Drawbacks of Playing Youth Sports
C. The Impact of Youth Sports on Long-Term Mental Health

While perusing the dessert section at a local dessert shop, Jeff Greene, a middle-aged man in a friendly manner, was drawn to the beautiful display of cakes and pies. He was accompanied by his wife, Emily, and their teenage daughter, Sophie, who were all eagerly discussing which treat they should take home. The air was filled with the sweet aroma of freshly baked goods, making the decision even more delightful and challenging.
As Jeff reached for a box of chocolate mousse, he noticed Tara, a young, enthusiastic employee, arranging the pies on the shelf. Her eyes lit up as she noticed Jeff’s curiosity. “Hi there!” Tara greeted warmly. “If you’re looking for a recommendation, the key lime pie (酸橙派) here is my absolute favorite, It’s tangy and sweet - truly the best!”
Jeff smiled, interested. “Really? I actually make a pretty good key lime pie myself. But I’m up for trying this one.”
Tara’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “You won’t be disappointed! It’s really special.”
Jeff thanked her, and he and his family continued their shopping, chatting about their plans for dessert. The conversation was filled with laughter and anticipation, as they debated the merits of each dessert. Emily suggested the chocolate mousse, while Sophie leaned towards a classic apple pie. Yet, the enthusiasm in Tara’s voice about the key lime pie lingered in Jeff’s mind, adding a touch of curiosity to their decision. Little did they know, this brief exchange would soon unfold into a heartwarming story.
As they reached the checkout, Jeff’s family noticed something unusual. The key lime pie they had initially chosen was missing from their cart. Instead, they found a pie with a handwritten note attached. The note read: “Enjoy this key lime pie, on me! Tara.”

【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. D

【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第六段“The situation is different when consumers are informed about possible risks, for example that farmers could lose their source of income due to the new technology (然而,当消费者被告知可能的风险时,比如农民可能会因新技术失去收入来源),以及“These aspects reduced the willingness to buy and pay for such cheese the most. (这些方面最能减少购买和支付这种奶酪的意愿)”可知,消费者购买奶酪意愿的减少原因,一是收入的减少,二是大公司的原因,再结合原句中exert的宾语为“过多的力量”too much power, exert在此处意为使用,即大公司可能在市场上使用过多的力量。故选B。
31题详解】
主旨大意题。推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Our study shows that consumers in Germany are open to cheese from precision fermentation if they are informed about the benefits and high quality of the product. Adults who continuously played organized sports through their youth have fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who never played or those who dropped out, a new study finds.
D. Challenges and Solutions for Improving Youth Sports Programs

Tara.”
