A Incredible Theme Parks Worth Visiting in America Edaville Family Theme Park If your son or daughter always watches Thomas the Tank Engine on TV, then you had better accompany your child to Edaville Family Theme Park. This theme park is home to Thomas Land, highlights of which include a 20-minute train ride on a life-size Thomas the Tank Engine, a live show featuring your favorite industrial trains and numerous other themed rides featuring adorable, life-size and rideable Thomas characters. Cliff’s Amusement Park One of just two amusement parks in New Mexico, Cliff’s Amusement Park in Albuquerque is not just the best park in its state. It also has what is considered to be one of the best wooden roller coasters in superb condition in the country, the New Mexico Rattler. This coaster features more dips, twists and turns than even the most wound-up snake. Belmont Park Belmont Park features one of the most historic coasters in the country. Indeed, this park is home to the Giant Dipper, a wooden roller coaster that was built during the “Golden Age of Coasters” and opened in 1925. In addition to this coaster and other rides and attractions, there are also some food stalls along the boardwalk. Beech Bend Amusement Park In addition to dozens of family-friendly rides, this park also features a dragstrip raceway (牵引式跑道) and a camping ground. What is especially appealing to children and adults is the Splash Lagoon Water Park. Lie around in the lazy river or the enormous leisure pool, or take a dive down the water ride. There’s no better way to beat that intense Southern summer heat. 1. Which is the most attractive to a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine? A. Belmont Park. B. Cliff’s Amusement Park. C. Edaville Family Theme Park. D. Beech Bend Amusement Park. 2. What do Cliff’s Amusement Park and Belmont Park have in common? A. They are water themed. B. They offer food and drinks. C. They have wooden roller coasters. D. They are the best parks in the world. 3. What can you enjoy at Beech Bend Amusement Park? A. Fishing. B. Camping. C. Surfing. D. Cycling. B Selina Zhang, a high schooler, has invented a trap that could potentially get rid of lanternflies (斑点灯蝇) in the city. She first noticed this pest in grade school. At the time, Zhang was visiting a market near her hometown and the colorful bugs caught her eye. Zhang’s first encounter with the lanternfly relates to the quote, “Not all that glitters is gold.” This bug whose bright red underwings stand out from black forewings (前翅) might be pretty to look at. However, it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades, and the city has been unable to remove this problem. This insect has a healthy appetite for most plants and can feed on most crops, trees and various fruits. This invasive (侵入的) pest does not harm humans or animals. However, it could reduce the quality of life of people living in heavily affected areas. It is known to be a nuisance (讨厌的东西) in outdoor areas as they can lay their egg masses on trees and even vehicles. Zhang eventually realized that this insect was a threat to Garden City and decided to do something about it. Most people choose insecticides to manage this invasion, but this can leave harmful remains. Some others use a sticky band to trap pests, but this method is also unsafe as it can trap other small animals and insects. In search of an ecologically acceptable method, Zhang got inspiration from chess boards and the “Dance Revolution”. She conducted an extensive field observation for weeks non-stop, observing the behavioral patterns of the bugs. She studied how they grew over time and navigated (进行导航) unfamiliar structures and areas they chose to gather. After her study, Zhang knew she wanted to copy the tree of heaven as a trap and used an umbrella. She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the lanternflies that landed. And she finally created a solar-powered, self-cleaning “tree” that attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic net. 4. What does the quote “Not all that glitters is gold” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Things looking valuable may be worthless. B. Zhang’s hometown fails to get rid of the bug. C. Bodies of the beautiful lanternflies are shining. D. The bug destroys agricultural industry despite its beauty. 5. What can be learned about lanternflies? A. They live on greens and animals. B. They have a bad effect on people’s life. C. People hate them laying eggs everywhere. D. Their underwings are shorter than their forewings. 6. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The application of the trap. B. The source of the trap. C. The process of inventing the trap. D. The challenges of designing the trap. 7. Which of the following can best describe Zhang? A. Determined and innovative. B. Creative and outgoing. C. Reliable and knowledgeable. D. Intelligent and confident. C Point in the direction of food on the kitchen door, and your dog will follow your guidance to eat it up. That is a skill even our closest relative in the animal kingdom cannot match. “Chimps (黑猩猩) can perform much better than dogs on so many things,” said Brian Hare, a professor at Duke University. “But they’re not particularly good at understanding cooperative communicative gestures.” Previous studies have shown conflicting results about whether both dog and wolf puppies (幼崽) can read human gestures. So Hare’s team compared a group of young dogs with their wild cousins to test the question out. The dog puppies were service-dogs-in-training, and most of them were raised by a nonprofit organization. Like other young puppies, they engaged in human interaction sometimes throughout the day, and they were still looked after by their mother. The young wolves, on the other hand, were separated from their mother 10 or 11 days after they were born, and they were around human handlers 24/7, living at the Wildlife Science Center. The scientists put 44 dogs and 37 wolf puppies, all between 5 and 18 weeks old, through a series of tests and challenges. In one task, researchers placed a treat in one of two bowls, and then pointed a finger at the bowl containing the snack three times. The dog puppies were twice as likely to understand where to go even though they had experienced far less human contact, and the researchers made sure the pups were not just smelling the food. And in a separate test, the dogs were 30 times more likely to approach an unknown human and made significantly more eye contact with people than little wolves. “The comparison of so many young dogs and wolves on a wide variety of tasks is very exciting,” said Angie Johnston, a researcher at Boston College, who was not involved with the new work. “It’s a very ambitious study.” 8. In which aspect did the experimental animals differ? A. Their age. B. Their living conditions. C. The number of tests they took part in. D. The human gestures they were about to read. 9. What can we learn from this study? A. The dog puppies were less likely to get the treat. B. The dog puppies were more willing to interact with people. C. The wolf puppies weren’t as interested in the food as the dogs were. D. The wolf puppies weren’t so intelligent as dog puppies. 10. What is Angie Johnston’s attitude to the study? A. Uncaring. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Confused. 11. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Reading Humans: Dog Pups Outperform Wolf Pups? B. Chimps vs Dog Pups: Who’s the Master of Gestures? C. Interacting with Humans: Dog Pups’ Secret to Understanding Gestures? D. Dog Pups’ Skill: Master Eye Contact for Food? D “Imagine you have to make a speech, but instead of looking down at your notes, the words appear in front of your eyes, whichever direction you look in,” says Steve Sinclair when introducing the smart contact lenses (隐形眼睛) being developed by his company Mojo. However, this is just one of many features the makers of smart contact lenses promise will be available in the future. Other smart lenses are being developed to collect health data. They are expected to help to self-monitor and track glucose (葡萄糖) levels, according to Rebecca Rojas, instructor at Columbia University. “They can also provide extended-release (缓释) drug-delivery options. It’s exciting to see how far technology has come, and the potential it offers to improve patients’ lives. Despite the excitement, smart lenses technology still has to overcome a number of challenges. One challenge will be powering them with batteries that will obviously have to be incredibly tiny, so will they deliver enough power to do anything useful? Mojo is still testing its product, but wants customers to be able to wear its lenses all day, without having to recharge them. “The expectation is that you are not consuming information from the lens all the time but in short moments throughout the day. Actual battery life will depend on how and how often it is used, just like your smartphone or smartwatch today,” a company spokesperson explains. Besides, according to senior policy analyst Daniel Leufer, any device with a forward-facing camera that allows a user to take pictures, or record videos, presents risks to bystanders’ (旁观者) privacy. Additionally, there are concerns about the product that will be familiar to anyone who wears regular contacts. “Any type of contact lens can present a risk to eye health, if not properly cared for or not fitted properly. Just like any other medical device, we need to make sure the patients’ health comes first,” says Ms Rojas. “We know it’s going to take some time for the public to accept it. But we think it’s unavoidable that all of our eyewear is eventually going to become smart,” says Mr Sinclair. 12. What can Mojo’s smart lenses enable wearers to do? A. Take notes whenever necessary. B. Keep going in the right direction. C. Receive information before their eyes. D. Share important information with others. 13. How could smart lenses benefit wearers’ health? A. By reducing their glucose levels. B. By avoiding the use of eye drugs. C. By reminding them to do exercise. D. By informing them of their health state. 14. Which of the following is NOT a concern of the company? A. Long-term use without worrying about charging. B. The risk of invading (侵犯) the privacy of bystanders. C. The possibility of causing harm to eye health. D. The lack of confidence in the prospect of smart eyewear. 15. What can we learn from Mr Sinclair’s words in the last paragraph? A. He is confident about the smart lenses’ future. B. He will spend more time improving the smart lenses. C. He expects the smart lenses to be a hit once launched. D. He is worried about the problems brought by the smart lenses. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项多余选项。 “Leave no track” is popular among many campers who are concerned about our environment and favor sustainable (可持续的) travel. Not only did we go to the same school, but our evenings and weekends were spent together too. It was like we were inseparable. I never felt that I needed any friends other than them. Unexpectedly, one evening their parents shared the news of them moving to another country-Australia. I was shocked to realize that we would never be together, started recalling all the good times we had spent together, such as playing in the school breaks, the play dates, and all the fun things we did. Was it all going to end? When we had been through so many highs and lows together, shared secrets and supported each other through thick and thin, their moving away felt like my heart was being taken away. The news of their departure left me feeling empty and lost. I was thinking about the biggest change that I was going to face in a few days, it was a difficult pill to swallow, but I knew I must move on. Though it wasn’t easy at first, I was trying my level best to beat the mental pain I was in. After hearing the news, every day felt like a struggle. They encouraged me to create more memories that could be cherished forever. Taking their advice to heart, I planned a series of farewell activities - a picnic at our favorite park, a movie marathon night featuring our favorite films, and a heartfelt gift exchange. These moments were bittersweet, filled with laughter and tears, reminding us of the strong bond we shared. It was a time of reflection, appreciating every moment spent together, and acknowledging that true friendship isn’t bound by distance. Saying goodbye wasn’t easy, but it set my heart at ease to realize that we could still be the closest friends. We made promises to stay in touch through video calls, texts, and social media. As they left, we hugged tightly, whispering reassurances of meeting again. The departure was a pivotal moment for me, teaching me resilience and the value of friendships that withstand the test of time and distance. This experience, although painful, prepared me for future farewells and reinforced the idea that some bonds are indeed unbreakable, no matter where life takes us. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
