Text 10
Computers and online games are great, but books are still so important for kids. Some children come from poor families and don’t even have a single book. Libraries are more important than ever before. When a child opens a book, they open a window into another world that helps their imagination develop. (18) They become heroes, or kings and queens in ancient times. Inside every book is a whole world waiting to be discovered. (19) Every child needs books so they can see the world through someone else’s eyes. Reading helps kids become kinder, smarter, braver — even crazier! For children who don’t have books at home, libraries are where magic can happen. (19) Think about your favorite book, and remember why you loved it and what you learned from it. If you can afford to, please give a little money to support your local library and give all children a chance to experience that magic for themselves! (20)

【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“It’s long been understood that people are easily convinced that objects that display or mimic lifelike qualities are in fact alive,(长期以来,人们认为那些显示或___逼真品质的物体实际上是活着的)”和后面的“humans seem to be used to see life where it doesn’t exist and to give trust to things that seem lifelike.(人类似乎习惯于在不存在生命的地方看到生命,并且会对那些看似有生命特征的事物给予信任)”可知,对于那些展示生命特征或者模仿逼真品质的物体,人们是信任的。“mimic”在此处的意思是“模仿”。故选A项。

【35题详解】
主旨大意题。从第一段“The conversational tone of an AI chatbot or voice- based assistant seems like a good way to learn new concepts, but they may actually make us more willing to believe inexact information compared with that presented like a Wikipedia article.(人工智能聊天机器人或基于语音的助手的对话语气似乎是学习新概念的好方法,但与维基百科文章中呈现的信息相比,它们实际上可能会让我们更愿意相信不准确的信息。)” 故选A项。

Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework?
Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown(皱眉)when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we’ve found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration is our way of asking others for help.
Scientists at the university gave children and chimpanzees(黑猩猩)an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn’t work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimpanzees’ did not.
Humans and chimpanzees have many facial expressions that share the same meaning. A human smile is the same as a chimpanzee showing its teeth in happiness.
Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved to use this facial expression to ask for help. We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.
According to Dr. Albert Mehrabian, a well- known professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, only 7% of human communication happens through words and55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.
With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Frowning. B. The expression.
C. Something difficult. D. A sign of effort.
29. According to the recent study, people’s expression of effort or frustration tells others that ________.
A. they need help B. they can do things themselves
C. they will give up D. they want to be alone.
30. What can we learn from the study?
A. Scientists gave the chimpanzees an easy puzzle.
B. The chimpanzees smiled as they worked out the puzzle.
C. The chimpanzees’ face didn’t show determination or effort.
D. The chimpanzees used other expressions to ask for help.
31. Which of the following may Dr. Albert Mehrabian agree with?
A. Body language is very important in human communication.
B. People don’t like to use words to communicate.
C. Human expressions are not a kind of body language.
D. Words can’t help much in communication.
D
The conversational tone of an AI chatbot or voice-based assistant seems like a good way to learn new concepts, but they may actually make us more willing to believe inexact information compared with that presented like a Wikipedia article.
To investigate this issue, Sonja Utz at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and her colleagues asked about 1,200 participants to search for information using one of the three tools. The first included text appearing letter by letter in the style of a large language model, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT; the second provided information through a voice-based device like Siri; and the third was a text-based copy of Wikipedia.
In some cases, participants were given accurate (准确的) information, while others saw factual errors, such as naming Sofia as the capital of Slovenia. Participants were asked to rate the accuracy, trustworthiness, and believability of the information on a seven-point scale, where 7 is entirely accurate. In the answers where errors were introduced, information presented in a text-based form was rated as 4.24. The ChatGPT-like setup managed 4.76, while the voice assistant scored 5.29.
“It’s long been understood that people are easily convinced (确信) that objects that display or mimic lifelike qualities are in fact alive,” says Mike Katell at the Alan Túring Institute, UK. “It’s not surprising that people find conversational chat assistants more convincing and reliable than text because humans seem to be used to see life where it doesn’t exist and to give trust to things that seem lifelike.”
The way the chatbots and voice agents are programmed to use a friendly and helpful conversational tone also confuses people, says Katell. “The makers of chatbots aren’t necessarily trying to fool us, but they are trying to put users at ease. The goal of a large language model is ‘seemingly reasonable’ and that is achieved through believable content and a friendly delivery.”
Utz says it is important to recognize. that the presentation of information can affect how much we believe it. “People now have learned that. these models hallucinate (产生幻觉) sometimes,” she says. “But what people do not know yet is that just this interaction mode makes us more likely to believe whatever is written there.”
32. What was the main purpose of Sonja Utz’s study?
A. To examine the accuracy of different AI types.
B. To compare different types of information sources.
C. To explore how presentation affects belief in information.
D. To analyse why chatbots are more accurate than Wikipedia.
33. What does the underlined word “mimic” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Copy. B. Trust. C. Examine. D. Understand.
34. Which of the following ideas might Utz agree with?
A. Chatbots makers cheat users into believing in them.
B. It’s impossible for people to doubt interaction mode.
C. People are unaware that they may get false information.
D. It’s normal that people prefer to believe language models.
35. What can be a suitable title for this passage?

We live near a famous hospital in the city. Since our house is big, we rent some rooms to the patients.
One evening, a truly ugly old man came. Extremely politely, he said, “Good evening. I’m wondering if you have a room for just one night. I came for treatment from the eastern shore (海岸), and there’s no bus till the morning.” He told me he’d been searching for a room since noon, but failed because of his face.
For a moment, I hesitated (犹豫), not only because there was no room left. But his following words convinced (说服了) me: “I could sleep on the floor. I’ll leave early in the morning.”
By chatting with him, I knew he fished for a living to support a big family. But what touched me most was that instead of complaining, he was grateful that his disease didn’t bring him terrible pain.
At bedtime, we put a bed in the children’s room for him. The next morning, he got up early and asked if he could come again. I told him he would be welcome.
