There can be no doubt that Stephen King, New York Time’s Best-Selling author, has found success in many aspects, but it wasn’t always like this. King witnessed tragedy and horrors from the very beginning. When he was 2 years old, his father told his mom that he was going out to get cigarettes but in fact, he never came back, he had abandoned his family.
This left his mother Ruth to care for Stephen and his elder brother David on her own. Ruth was forced to move often, desperately looking for work as she was now the only provider of the family, and she had to rely on relatives most of the time. One day Stephen went out to play with friends and when he came back, he wasn’t even able to speak a single word, it seemed he was hurt mentally or something, but he still got the courage to continue forward. It turned out that one of his friends was hit by a train and died, which left an emotional scar on him.
King, later on, dropped out of school due to some serious health concerns and was told that he had to enlist (入伍) again the next fall, which demotivated him too. Although Stephen King didn’t see his childhood as something extraordinary or special, he did say that he was always fascinated by scary things.
People used to acknowledge the King family by their love of literature, in fact whenever Stephen’s mom used to go out, she didn’t hire a babysitter, for the kids used to read novels to each other so they would not get bored. Stephen King’s love of stories was developed from a very young age and he carried that tradition with his own children along with his wife Tabitha.
In 1973, Stephen King started his amazing journey of success when he published his first novel “Carrie”, which is scary. The rest followed from after that as he published many amazing books like The Shining, IT, Firestarter, and Cujo. All of these books became instant classics and got their own movie and television shows adaptions.
24. What is the main reason leading Stephen King to become a best-selling author?
A. His in-born writing talents. B. His unfortunate childhood.
C. His excellent promotion skills. D. His mom’s miserable experiences.
25. What left Stephen King not even speaking a single word?
A. He was knocked down by a passing train.
B. He was depressed by the constant moves.
C. He was badly criticized by a close classmate.
D. He was heart-struck by the pass-away of a friend.
26. What does the underlined word “demotivated” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Discouraged. B. Refreshed. C. Embarrassed. D. Aroused.
27. Why didn’t Stephen’s mom hire a babysitter?
A. The family was too poor to hire a babysitter.
B. The children were too naughty to be looked after.
C. The children could actually entertain themselves.
D. The children were young enough to care for themselves.
C
Switching food and drink purchases to very similar but more environmentally friendly alternatives could reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from household groceries by more than a quarter (26%), according to a new Australian study from The George Institute published in Nature Food. Making bigger changes — like swapping a frozen meat lasagne (宽面条) for the vegetarian option — could push the reduction to as much as 71%.
Lead author Dr Allison Gaines said, “Dietary habits need to change significantly if we are to meet global emissions targets, particularly in high-income countries like Australia, the UK, and the US.” But while consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the food system, they lack reliable information to identify the more environmentally friendly options.
Researchers calculated the projected emissions of annual grocery purchases from 7,000 Australian households in The George Institute’s FoodSwitch database and global environmental impact datasets. More than 22,000 products were assigned to major, minor and sub-categories of foods (e. g. ‘bread and bakery’, ‘bread’ and ‘white bread’, respectively) to quantify emissions saved by switching both within and between groups. Making switches within the same sub-categories of foods could lead to emission reductions of 26% in Australia, equivalent to taking over 1.9 million cars off the road. Switches within minor categories of foods could lead to even bigger emission reductions of 71%.
The results of the study show the potential to significantly reduce our environmental impact by switching like-for-like products. “It showed that you can switch to lower emissions products while still enjoying nutritious foods,” Dr Gaines added.
A free app, called ecoSwitch, has been developed currently available in Australia, based on this research. Shoppers can use their device to scan a product barcode and check its ‘Planetary Health Rating’, a measure of its emissions shown as a score between half a star (high emissions) to five stars (low emissions).
“While ecoSwitch is a much-needed first step in providing environmental transparency (透明度) for grocery shoppers, the vision is for compulsive display of a single, standardized sustainability rating system on all supermarket products,” concluded prof Neal, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Imperial College London.
28. What’s the function of paragraph 2?
A.To set the stage for further explanation.
B.To summarize the previous paragraph.
C.To give supporting details for the writer’s argument.
D.To make a comparison between different countries.
29. Why do researchers make a detailed classification for products?
A.To set up a comprehensive database.
B.To figure out the detailed food categories.
C.To measure emissions reduced by switching food.
D.To ensure less air pollution caused by food options.
30. What do we know about ecoSwitch?
A.It is popular in high-income countries.
B.It checks the emissions of star products.
C.It is a measurement system for a supermarket.
D.It ensures wiser choices for food purchase.
31. What’s the best title of the text?
A.EcoSwitch—a Reminder of Food Safety
B.Dietary habits—a Factor of Physical Health
C.Food swaps—a Way of Environmental Sustainability
D.Greenhouse gas emissions—a Cause of Environmental Crisis

We are in the midst of a battle for our attention. Our devices have affected our brains and destroyed our collective ability to concentrate. Journalist Johann Hair’s new book, Stolen Focus, has just joined the voices complaining about the great influence of the digital age. His and other recent books reflect a public perception that our focus is under attack.
Indeed, in our new research, we found some clear concerns. We surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2, 093 UK adults last year. Half of those surveyed felt their attention spans were shorter than they used to be, compared with a quarter who didn’t. And three quarters of participants agreed we’re living through a time when there’s non-stop competition for our attention between a variety of media channels and information outlets (渠道).
There has long been a worry about the threat to attention brought by new cultural forms, whether that’s social media or the cheap paperback sensation novels of the 19th century. Even as far back as ancient Greece, the philosopher Socrates complained that the written words created “forgetfulness in our souls”. There has always been a tendency to fear the effects that new media and technologies will have on our minds.
The reality is that we simply don’t have long-term studies that tell us whether our attention spans have actually shrunk. What we do know from our study is that people overestimate some of the problems. There’s no such thing as an average attention span. Our ability to focus varies hugely depending on the individual and the task at hand.
It’s also important not to ignore the many benefits that technology brings to our life. Much of the public surveyed recognized these, so while half thought big tech and social media were ruining young people’s attention spans, roughly another half felt that being easily distracted was more to do with people’s personalities than any negative influence that technology may or may not have. Also, half of the public believed multitasking at work and switching frequently between emails, phone calls, and other tasks can create a more efficient and satisfactory work experience.
32. What might be the theme of the books mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. The main focus of social media. B. The great influence of public opinion.
C. The attention crisis in the digital age. D. The fierce competition in the digital age.
33. What can we know about some of the participants in the new research?
A. They were frequently disturbed by digital devices.
B. They felt it hard to acquire useful information online.
C. They had shorter attention spans than average people.
D. They felt challenged by fierce competition from others.
34. Why does the author mention Socrates in Paragraph 3?
A. To stress new cultural forms have limitations.
B. To show worry about attention is an age-old problem.
C. To prove the important role he played in literary history.
D. To explain cultural differences between the past and the present.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. People tend to overestimate their abilities.
B. Digital distractions might have potential benefits.
C. Technology’s benefits have been largely ignored.
D. Switching between different tasks frequently is difficult.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
On hearing the word vacation, most people react positively. Experienced travelers will argue that more important than where they go on vacation is who they go with. 36 .
Family travel is special and creates lasting memories, but it can also have some challenges. For one, the success of a trip often depends on the relationships that the family members have with one another. If two brothers do not get along at home, the chances are that they will fight during a vacation. 37 . If a family is traveling by air, purchasing plane tickets for everyone can be very expensive.
38 . Close friends often have similar personalities, so they generally get along with each other and fight less than family members might on a trip. Furthermore, if friends are close, even a terrible trip will not ruin the friendship. 39 . All in all, traveling with friends can be a positive experience that results in a great vacation and, likely, a stronger friendship.
Finally, people can choose to travel alone. Solo travelers can be more flexible with transportation than those traveling in a large group. 40 . And they also have better chances of getting a seat on buses or planes since they only need one. In addition, solo travelers are more likely to meet locals or other vacationers because they are more likely to want to talk with others.
A.They can change plans more easily
B.Each person tends to cover his or her individual expenses
C.Another potential problem of family travel is transportation
D.Sightseeing and scheduling are not a problem for solo travelers
E.In fact, friendships are often strengthened with the travel memories
F.Traveling with friends can be an unforgettable experience for several reasons
G.Vacations can be classified on the basis of who vacationers choose to travel with

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Nowadays many people prefer shopping online.
Generally, the advantages are as follows. It is effective and convenient for us to buy things online with lower price. Besides, the large varieties of goods on the net are effortlessly comparable and easy to choose.
However, every coin has two sides. Sometimes the incomplete payment system will result in revealing our personal information. What’s more, chances are consumers can’t help being persuaded into buying something fake.
As for me, the benefits brought by the positive aspects of shopping on line far outweigh the negative ones. Therefore, I would like to shop on line.
第二节(满分25分)
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Seeing the mess, the father was shocked and asked what had happened. After knowing their plan, he approached the twins with his hands touching the pair’s heads gently. “Never mind. Let’s try it again”. He told them to clean up the kitchen first. The twins cheered up and did as told. Half an hour later, the kitchen was cleaned and Father had made some egg sandwiches and cooked some oat porridge. Then he sneaked back to bed. Finally, the twins prepared the breakfast tray and stepped out of the kitchen.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When she slowly opened her eyes, she was very surprised to find breakfast ready in front of her. They hugged her and yelled “Happy Mother’s Day, darling Mummy!” Mother was so moved that she hugged the twins tightly. She shook Father who was pretending to snore. He feigned astonishment when he saw the breakfast. Mother bit into a sandwich and said it was the best she had ever tasted. Jenna caught her
Father’s eye and they winked at each other secretly. The whole family shared the unforgettable breakfast and were bathed in great happiness.

1. M: Hello, I wonder if we could change Thursday’s volleyball to Sunday.
W: Is that the only time you can make it? How about Saturday?
2. M: Tina, you mustn’t do the experiment like that. The teacher told us to follow his instructions.
W: Thank you for telling me about that.
3. M: This machine has so many buttons. I can’t figure out which one makes it run.
W: You’d better read the instructions first. Pressing the buttons improperly may cause the machine to break down.
M: Oh, I see.
4. M: Did you watch that comedy on TV last night? I don’t think I ever laughed so hard.
W: Don’t even talk to me about it. The only night I really wanted to watch something and we had a power failure in my building.
5. M: Hi, Jane. Have you tried the new restaurant in town yet?
W: Yes, I went there last night with my mother. It took ages for the food to arrive. But when it finally did arrive, I have to say that it certainly was worth waiting for.
6-7.
M: I hate my computer. It’s so old and slow. I need more storage and a faster memory.
W: Oh, come on! You only use your computer to play games. And where will you get money to 6 buy a new computer?
M: I’ll get a job at a pizza place every weekend, so I can save lots of money. Mom, if I have a pretty fast laptop, I can bring it to class and take notes on it. Then my notes will be so organized!
W: Before that, I want you to organize your room. Now!
8-9.
M: Listen, Alice. I’m phoning because I want to invite you to a party at our new house.
W: New house?
M: Yes. We’ve just moved. That’s why we’re throwing this party. We know you’re very busy, but we’d love you to come.
W: Yes, I’d love to. When is it?
M: This Saturday evening.
W: Well... I’ll have a test next Monday and an article to hand in on Tuesday. Will the party go on very late?
M: Until one in the morning. But you don’t have to stay that long. How about it?
W: All right. I’ll come. When does the party start?
M: Come at any time after eight.
W: Good. I’m looking forward to seeing you again.
10-12.
W: I met Betty today on the street.
M: What has she been doing?
W: She said she just got back with George from a trip to London.
M: They did? So what did she say about London?
W: Oh, they had a lovely time. She said we’d really enjoy it if we were there too.
M: Did you ask how the weather was?
W: It seems it was rather cool in London, but nice and warm along the coast.
M: Did she say where she stayed?
W: She told me, but I don’t remember.
M: Well, did she say the hotels were crowded?
W: Yes, she said there were always too many travelers at this time of the year. So she recommends we make our plans as soon as possible.
M: Well, we’d better do some checking. Do yo still have the guidebook?
W: Yes, here it is. If I remember, it says the cheapest is around $35 a day.
13-16.
W: Hi. Welcome to Heavenly Pies. May I take your order?
M: Uh... Yes. I’d like the chicken-fried steak.
W: OK. Would you like fries, bread, or rice with your meal?
M: Umm. I’ll take the rice.
W: Would you care for anything to drink?
M: Yeah. I’ll take a medium orange juice.
W: I’m sorry. We only have large or small.
M: Well, in that case, uh, I’ll have a small one.
W: OK. A small juice. And what kind of dressing would you like with your salad? It comes with the fried steak.
M: What dressings do you have?
W: We have French, Italian and blue cheese.
M: Oh! French, please.
W: Would you like anything else?
M: Well, I’d like to see your pie menu. That’s the main reason why I like to dine here.
W: Oh, I’m so sorry, but we aren’t serving pies today.
M: Huh?
W: Well, it usually is, but, Dave, our bakers, slipped in the kitchen two days ago, and hurt his leg. He’ll be out for at least two weeks. In the meantime, we’re serving ice cream instead. Sorry.
M: Wow. I’m sorry to hear that. Well, in that case, I’ll have an ice cream sundae.
W: I’ll be back with your order in a few minutes.

Good morning, I’m Michael, housing director here at the university. I’m visiting all the dormitories this week to inform students about check-out procedures. I know you have a lot on your mind with finals coming up, but there are a few things you need to be aware of as you prepare to leave for your vacation. This dormitory will be closed during the summer months and will reopen on September 1 st. You must vacate your room by June 3rd . Even if you are registered for classes during the summer, you must leave this dorm by June 3rd . If this poses a problem for you, you should contact my office as soon as possible. You should remember to turn in your room key before you leave. Failure to return your key can result in a $ 1 fine. You must also make sure that all of your personal property has been cleared out of your room. I will be passing out a form for you to fill out concerning the condition of your room. You should report on the form of any damage to your room which has occurred over the last year, such as holes in the room’s walls, doors or windows. That way our summer maintenance crew will know where to make repairs before the next school year starts. If you have any questions during the next few days, please ask your resident advisers or call my office. Now, please take one of the forms as they are passed around.
