The Woolly Monkey Mysteries: The Quest to Save a Rain Forest Species
By Sandra Markle. Ages 8 to 10.
Woolly Monkeys spend most of their time high up in 150-foot-tall trees. That makes them difficult animals
to count and to study. But cameras have provided valuable information and taken, as this book shows, amazing
pictures. Experts now believe that Peru’s lowland monkeys and the waste they produce are necessary to the
survival of the rain forest.
Camp Panda: Helping Cubs Return to the Wild
By Catherine Thimmesh. Ages 10 to 12.
The giant panda is much-beloved in China, but in the past 40 years, at least half of its habitat has been
destroyed. Camp Panda tells about efforts to reintroduce the giant pandas into the wild so that they might have a
future. As part of the efforts, people wear panda costumes that smell like pandas while weighing and measuring
the young pandas. They aren’t supposed to get used to seeing and being around people, because people could
pose a danger to them in the wild.
Beyond Words: What Elephants and Whales Think and Feel
By Carl Safina. Ages 10 and older.
Carl Safina studied elephants in an African national park and killer whales off the coast of Washington state.
He learned about their strong family bonds , the surprising ways they communicate and how they play and hang
out with one another. This book makes a strong case for protecting the ability of these animals to live freely.
Back from the Brink: Saving Animals from Extinction
By Nancy F. Castaldo. Ages 10 and older.
This book focuses on seven groups of animals—including whooping cranes, California condors and
American alligators—that were brought back to healthy numbers by a lot of efforts. As she celebrates these
successes, Nancy F. Castaldo also makes clear that dangers, such as the effects of climate change, still cloud(笼
罩)the future of these creatures.

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of
the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes
they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students. There is a
simplesolution to this problem: school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers
(同龄人).From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required students to
wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants, and a white shirt. The
uniform left little room for any kind of self-expression, especially through clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and sports. I did not
know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical abilities if it hadn’t been
for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event that happened
in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the gym of our school. Luckily,
cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any danger could ever happen as he was out of
place. School officials kept the man locked inside our gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or
economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students.
24. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By explaining a basic rule. B. By describing a common problem.
C. By challenging others’ views. D. By sharing his parents’ experience.
25. What do the underlined words “out of place” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Dressing differently. B. Standing straight. C. Running fast. D. Breathing heavily.
26.Which of the following could the author agree with?
A. Uniforms should be more modern. B. Uniforms can help shape better students.
C. Uniforms are popular with students. D. Uniforms are bad for self-development.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To record his high school life. B. To introduce high school uniforms.
C. To ask students to like what they wear. D. To show his supportive view towards uniforms.

The Arctic trip with Quark Expeditions is an amazing experience, and I am thankful for it. However, it also
makes me realize our presence here sounds pointless in this great setting, like we are visitors from another
world.
Our 10-day journey explored the Svalbard islands in northern Norway. At our farthest point, the North Pole
was still 600 miles away, but I had never been so far north. It felt like we were at the top of the world.
The story of humans in the Norwegian Arctic is all about looting (掠夺) the natural world for fur, coal and
other resources (资源).The first recorded visit was by Dutch sailor Willem Barentsz in June l596, searching for a
northeast path to China. History presenter Federico Gargiulo explained that this discovery put the Arctic on the
map. That attracted people to come and try to take those resources.
Today, there are environmental controls on visiting this area. On our first day, we watched videos that laid
down the law: Do not touch or take anything, and stay with your armed guide for protection from polar bears.
We also washed our shoes and feet before boarding or leaving the ship to make the land free of pollution.

Tourists pay a lot and travel far to see Arctic wildlife. On our last night, we finally got a close-up of a polar
bear. Everyone rushed to the decks (甲板) with cameras. We saw the bear swimming towards us, and as it got
closer, we could make out its black eyes and rounded ears.
Quark Expeditions’ guides are experienced in different fields. I learned a lot from them The guide Austin
Hart’s word’s impressed me: "It’s not much of a human planet. Dinosaurs were around for 180 million years. I
don’t know if humans have that long." As I stood among ice and snowy mountains, this made me feel
unbelievably small.
28. Why did Willem Barentsz come to the Norwegian Arctic?
A. To draw a map of Norway B. To find a northeast path to China.
C. To explore the local history. D. To search for a passage to Holland.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Strict Rules on visiting the Arctic. B. The rising number of tourists.
C. The measures to protect wildlife. D. Useful tips on watching birds.
30. How does the author feel after the journey?
A. Our presence fits in with the planet. B. It’s too cold on the Svalbard islands.bd
C. Human beings are small in this world. D. We must stop using natural resources.
31.Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A history book B. A news report C.A travel magazine D. A research paper

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to
researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don’t have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here
are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that’s good: You can copy them
down. If not, write down the most important points from class. Does your history teacher mention the date of a
key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare’s use of irony(讽刺)? Write them
down!
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in
class but only write the key ones on the board. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat
a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you’ll get to know a teacher’s style.
Don’t overdo it. Don’t go crazy taking notes. You’ll be frantic(慌乱的) if you try to write down every word
that’s said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points.
Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material
after class.
Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss. If the teacher is going too fast, your
classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don’t want to ask in class, see your teacher
afterwards. It’s much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.
Compare. Keep your notes handy when you’re doing your reading homework. Compare what you wrote
with what the reading says—you may even want to add to your notes as you read.
32. What’s an advantage of note-taking according to the writer?
A. It’s a basic skill in researching a paper. B.It helps fix your mind on what the teacher says.
C. It helps you to get good marks in tests. D. It gives you a better understanding of key facts.
33. Why is Shakespeare mentioned in the passage?
学科网(北京)股份有限公司
6
A. To introduce the topic of note-taking. B. To explain what a key fact is in a teacher’s class.
C.To give an example of forming good habits. D. To compare writing styles in different times.
34. What is suggested in the third paragraph?
A. A teacher’s style should be considered when taking notes.
B. It’s helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.
C. It’s not always possible to note down all information in class.
D. Teachers encourage their students to be active in class.
35. What’s the writer’s opinion according to the passage?
A. Students must not ask questions while having a class.
B.Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.
C.Students should put down key points while listening carefully.
D. Students should put down as much information as possible in class.

Starting high school has been both exciting and challenging. At first, I had butterflies in my stomach and was a bit frightened. However, as I explored the campus and took part in school activities, my nervousness turned into eagerness. Additionally, the support and guidance I received from teachers helped me become confident again.
As for the suggestions for us freshmen, my advice is to keep an open mind and embrace new experiences. When something put you under great pressure, stay calm and make the most of the opportunities you get.
Wish you a fulfilling and varied high school life.

W: I’ve got a friend who is a good repairman. He’d be able to do a super job on your apartment.
M: Oh, I’d really like to talk to him.
W: I’m not sure if he can do it right away, though. But I will give you his number, and you can give him a call yourself.
M: Thanks. It’s certainly worth a try, and if he can’t do it himself, he can put me in touch with someone who can.

W: Welcome to our university. Here is some information that may be useful to you. The Student Welfare Office is normally open from 4 p.m. till 8 p.m., Monday to Friday. Today and tomorrow, it will be open from about 9 a.m. If you have any problems, the teachers and volunteers there will help you. We also give out university identity cards that you will need to join the library. And they will allow you to get discounts at a number of local shops and places of entertainment, such as clubs and cinemas.
On Monday and Tuesday of next week, second-year students will be running a book sale in the canteen from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many of the books on your first-year reading list will be available, and we suggest you should look there first before spending too much on new books.
The university canteen opens from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., selling hot meals, fairly cheap. There is a basic cookery course starting next week. If you don’t know how to boil an egg, this is for you. It’s always full, so get your name on the list in the Welfare Office now!
