Most of us like to know where we are and where we’re going. It can feel strange to be lost—sometimes very uncomfortable, too. But that’s not always the case.
When I was about twelve, we were on holiday in Venice. My dad’s a photographer and he said that he was going to get up the following morning at 5 o’clock to take photos. Mum wasn’t interested, but I said I’d go with him, only because he promised I could have the biggest ever bowl of Italian ice cream if I did. Why else would I rise so early?
So at 5 a. m. , we left the hotel and started walking. There was almost no one in the streets. As the sun began to come up, Dad started taking photographs and I just looked around. Every time he walked off, I followed him, down small streets and over little bridges.
After about an hour and a half, I found we lost our way and felt a bit scared, but Dad just smiled and laughed. “We’re lost!” he said. I told him to get out his map or phone. He looked at me. “Map? Phone? I only brought the camera. Come on, let’s get more lost.” He laughed again.
His laughter relaxed me and made me feel safe. We started to walk again. People were appearing on the streets—shops and cafes began to open, and as the sun came up, the narrow (狭窄的) streets started to fill with light.
Finally, after about four hours of wandering around, we were back. Mum asked worriedly, “Where have you been?” I said with a big smile, “We got lost.”
These days we have so many things to stop us from getting lost—maps, GPS, apps on our phones and so on. But Dad showed me that being lost can sometimes simply be something to enjoy.

In China, the full moon is a symbol of peace, luck and family reunion, which is one of the reasons why appreciating the full moon has become an important thing of the Mid-Autumn Festival. People usually gather with their loved ones and share delicious meals and moon cakes to celebrate the day.
Today let’s look back into that peaceful autumn night in the mountains with Chinese poet Wang Wei.
Autumn Evening in the Mountains
By Wang Wei
After fresh rain in mountains bare;
Autumn permeates (弥漫) evening air.
Among pine trees bright moonbeams (月光) peer;
Over crystal stones flows water clear.
Bamboos whisper of washer-maids;
Lotus stirs (搅动) when fishing boat wades;
Though fragrant (芳香的) spring may pass away;
Still here’s the place for you to stay.
Wang Wei is a well-known landscape poet and a talented landscape painter of the Tang Dynasty. One of China’s greatest poets Su Shi once praised his works, “Pictures in poems, poems in pictures.”
The first line draws a calming picture. It has just rained in the mountains without crowds around, and it becomes cooler as the night falls because autumn is coming. The second line is considered one of the most classic descriptions of the moon: the beautiful moonlight surrounding (围绕) the wet mountain, first it went through the pine trees and then to the clear forest spring. At this moment, you may hear the wind from the forest and the sound of water running. In the third line, you may hear a slight laughter from the bamboo forest. It’s the girls who have finished washing clothes coming back from the waterside; the lotus (莲花) leaves are waving, which must be the fisher working on his boat. What a creative description! It expresses his love for the simple and quiet mountain life.
At the end of the poem, Wang shared his open-minded philosophy (哲学) of life. Although spring is gone, autumn is also beautiful. Why not stay away from the noise of the world and stay in the mountains to feel the true meaning of life?

Today let’s look back into that peaceful autumn night in the mountains with Chinese poet Wang Wei.
Autumn Evening in the Mountains
By Wang Wei
After fresh rain in mountains bare;
Autumn permeates (弥漫) evening air.
Among pine trees bright moonbeams (月光) peer;
Over crystal stones flows water clear.
Bamboos whisper of washer-maids;
Lotus stirs (搅动) when fishing boat wades;

Books written long ago are sometimes difficult to understand—even if they’re written in your language! For example, an English reader today will have a difficult time ___36___ any of Shakespeare’s plays. Why? ___37___, languages change over time. But why does this happen? And how?
In any culture, language depends on the people ___38___ speak it. The words that people choose to use or the way that people speak a language can depend on many things, such as a person’s age, education level and so on. For example, an older person may say “terrific” ___39___ a younger person may say “awesome” to describe the same experience. A person who lives in the north may use different words ___40___ a person who lives in the south. In fact, the way people speak is sometimes so different that it is easy to tell where one is from just by the words one uses or one’s ___41___.
Another source of change comes from new words being added to a living language. One reason is that the modern word can require this need. Some new words come from words that have been cut, such as when “emo” is ___44___ instead of “emotional (情绪化的)”.

There’s a saying that goes, “Mountains are not high, fairies are named. Water is not deep, dragons are spirits.” This makes me appreciate them even more. It means that real power and truth are not always obvious. Just like fairies living in ordinary mountains and dragons hiding in shallow waters, hidden strengths often surprise us.
