This way costs more money, but it works faster than the sun. And heating isn’t the only way to get fresh water from salt water. People are trying some other ways. One way is to cool the seawater below 0. The fresh water will turn into ice first. Take the ice out, that’s the fresh water you want. Which way is the best? Shopping was not easy either. There was no store in the village. We kept things fresh in a special underground room. We didn’t have any computers, of course. We used to grow most of our own food. Most of us worked in the field every day. Few people went to school. Life used to be very hard, so I would like you to know about the old days and be happy with what you have. Remember feeling good about life is the key to happiness.

When volunteers Kathy and Ruth walked into our Learning Club four years ago, they thought it as a one-off (一次性事物). But as soon as they met the great group of children, they were all in. Now they are central to the club and have brought about huge changes in the children.
Some children don’t have anyone at home who can support their learning. It could be because their single parent is caring for another child with special needs, or any other reasons. So our Learning Club provides a fun out-of-school environment where students receive help with their homework from our volunteers.
“If they’re doing something, we give them a lot of praise (赞扬) and encourage them to go on to a next level if they’ re ready. We make afternoon tea for them, mainly just sandwiches and fruit. Then we go out to the library. Usually we’ll get in some reading and homework. Then we’ll do some crafts (手工),” said Kathy. “We mix it up ... We give them lots of encouragement. Then we’ll go on to harder things. So that helps them improve.”
Students in need have few chances to meet adults outside their family or teachers. That’s why our volunteers like Kathy and Ruth are so important. They create a safe space where children can open up and feel comfortable asking questions.
The best part of Kathy and Ruth’s roles is watching students become more confident in themselves. They will never forget one young student called Karen, who would not look at them, talk or even eat the candy when she first came. By the end of the year, she was taking full part in the activities and had set herself a big goal for the future. “I remember she stood up on stage (舞台) and spoke loudly. She said she wanted to be the Prime Minister (总理) of Australia!” said Kathy.

You might not usually pick up someone else’s rubbish. But imagine if everyone did it, the world would be a much cleaner place!
When I was young, my parents and my teachers always told me to pick up any rubbish around me. Each day at school during our lunch break, every student had to find some rubbish. We put it in the bin before we returned to class. Our school was always very clean because everyone spent one or two minutes picking up rubbish every day.
That same idea is now becoming popular around the world, thanks to Take 3, Australian surfer (冲浪运动员) Amanda Marechal and an ocean scientist Roberta Dixon came up with the idea in 2009. They asked everyone to pick up three pieces of rubbish each time they visited the beach. Why did they ask people to pick up just three pieces of rubbish, instead of 10 or 20? They think it’s an easy thing that people might finish.
Today, Take 3 is a popular idea around the world, and not just on the beach. It has gone to the United Kingdom, the United States, Costa Rica and some other countries. Their latest plan is to make an app. It will help people learn more about what kinds of rubbish are polluting the ocean.

Do you want to make the world a cleaner place? Why not start a Take 3 group with your friends this weekend?
