Jill Wheatley was a PE teacher in Germany. On the weekends she competed in marathons around Europe. But life threw her a near deadly blow. While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye. She spent 26 months in seven different hospitals, at times wishing it would just all end.
Desperately, Wheatley set out to find comfort and healing in nature. She travelled to Nepal where a friend convinced her to run in the Annapurna 100 with him. The power from that race changed her life and eventually had her looking up at the tops of the mountains. Project Vision 8000 was born. And she began her mission to stand on top of the world’s 14 highest mountains, towering 8, 000 metres above sea level, to show herself and others the power in choice and possibility.
Colours, and touch help guide her on the mountain and she has never once felt too tired to carry on.“The only thing constant is change, so when the weather gets really bad or a storm is coming in,I know it is going to pass.”So far, she’s had few problems standing among giants, but she admits she continues to struggle with overcoming: the “mountains of her mind”. Having already stared death in the face, Wheatley has great respect for the mountains and the mission she is on. But she’s not seared. The experience almost claimed her life, but it is now the driving force and fuel behind her success. At every icy peak, she smiles and takes a quick video with a breathless “so very thankful” whispered into the thin air.
24. What happened to Wheatley according to paragraph 1?
A. She came last in a race. B. She suffered head injury.
C. She lost her sight completely. D. She was attacked in a class.

B. Her friend’s timely suggestions.

D. Her nature helped her overcome fear.
27. What could be the best title for the text?

B. Lose sight to gain vision.
C. Action speaks louder than words.
D. Nature will work its course.

Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job? This is a question that many people think about these days. At present the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is irreversible. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
28. Why are some people concerned about AI?
A. It may outsmart humans. B. It has led to social problems.
C. It has been applied widely. D. It is the product of humanity.
29. How can we prevent AI’s potential threat?
A. By stirring emotions. B. By blocking functions.
C. By setting restrictions. D. By changing regulations.
30. What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Undesirable. B. Unavoidable.
C. Unpredictable. D. Unbelievable.
31. What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era?
A. Accept it passively. B. Deal with it positively.
C. Respond to it randomly. D. Defend it unconditionally.
D
Strings of letters have recently been flooding the Chinese Internet. Netizens have embraced the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) personality test, using its distinctive combinations of letters to define and classify themselves and others, sparking the formation of active online communities. Initially designed as a self-assessment tool to outline personality types and preferences, the MBTI has found enormous popularity in China.
The MBTI categorizes individuals using four pairs of characteristics: introversion (I) (内向) or extroversion (E) (外向), sensing (S) or intuition (N), thinking (T) or feeling (F), and judging (J) or perceiving (P). This leads to distinct four-letter combinations, like “ISTJ” or “INFP.” The values “E” and “I” have especially attracted public interest. Those who exhibit extroversion (E) characteristics are now humorously described as outgoing, talkative, wild, and socially skilled. They are often playfully called “social gangsters” due to their strong social skills. In contrast, those with introversion (I) are shown as quiet, reserved, reflective, and socially anxious.
Among the playful teasing, these eight seemingly simple letters have promoted deeper self-awareness and even developed a sense of friendship on social media platforms. Individuals discover their strengths and humorously acknowledge their odd behavior. This newfound self-awareness not only aids in understanding their fundamental values but also offers a way to deal with the common unease that bothers today’s youth. Many find comfort in thinking, “My ongoing anxiety, over-sensitivity, and self-doubt come from being an INFP. Such characteristics are typical for this personality type; thus, I’m perfectly normal.”
Netizens often humorously note: “In everyday life, during social events, I switch between introversion and extroversion. At work, I initially act extroverted but gradually become more introverted. When I see someone I like, I’m extroverted in my head but in reality, I’m all introverted. Haidilao Hotpot restaurants, known for their fancy birthday celebrations, sometimes make customers feel awkward. Their typical birthday song goes, “Say goodbye to all worries, and embrace all joys.” It’s a show meant for the extra-social. So, if an extrovert is invited to such a celebration, they might humorously exclaim, “I can’t take it! I’ve become introverted in the face of even more extroverted individuals.”
32. What is the original function of the MBTI personality test?
A. To form active online communities. B. To scientifically classify netizen behaviors.
C. To make a definition and classification of people. D. To evaluate the types of character and preferences.
33. Which of the following is most likely to be a “social gangster”?
A. A timid person. B. A shy person. C. A daring person. D. A humble person.
34. Understanding MBTI type can help to ______.
A. attracted public interest humorously B. recognize and accept personal characters
C. comfort the people with personality shortages D. know yourself better and correct odd behavior
35. Why does the author mention birthday celebrations in Haidilao Hotpot restaurants?
A. To explain why an extrovert is often invited to their celebration.
B. To show people’s personalities can change on different occasions.
C. To indicate the birthday songs could make customers embarrassed.
D. To stress the popularity of birthday parties in Haidilao Hotpot restaurants.

The Real Champion
I like running and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me Incredible Dash. One day, there was a sporting event planned in my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in almost every race there was. A large number of people gathered to watch. Crowds were eager to see the running race because it was the most exciting event. When the race for 400m started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first in the race and received a big round of applause. While it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of my world.
In the race for 200m, I ran full speed and finished the race first once again. The crowd gave thundering claps to me. I jumped all over the ground and was not bothered to give handshakes to my fellow racers.
Then came the race for 100m. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys quit the race except one, a boy named Matt who was invited as an honorary runner. Matt was born with low vision but he was a determined participant of many sports. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking whether he would like to quit too. I, wild with joy, thought I would win the champion without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to complete the event. I sniffed (嗤之以鼻), “It is a waste of time. I bet he even doesn’t figure out where the finish line is.”
The race of two started. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran to the finish line, Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before arriving at the finish line, I was expecting to receive the applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm (抽筋).

W: So, do you want to meet for breakfast before the event begins?
M: Sure. I need to be at the park by 9:30 a.m., so let’s meet one hour before that.

W: Sure. Can you remind me what your topic is?
M: The general topic I chose is beauty, but that’s as far as I’ve got. I don’t really know where to go from there.
W: Yeah, that’s much too large a topic. You really need to narrow it down in order to make it more accessible. Otherwise, you’ll be writing a book.
M: Exactly. That’s what I wanted to ask you about. I was hoping it would be possible for me to change topics. I’m really more interested in nature than beauty.
W: I’m afraid you have to stick to the assigned topic. Still, since you’re interested in nature, then that certainly can be worked into your paper. We’ve talked about Hume before in class, right?
M: Oh yeah, he’s the philosopher who wrote about where our ideas of beauty come from.
W: Exactly. I suggest you search for some information about him in the library and start from there.
M: Great. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, professor.
W: If there’s anything else you need, please come to see me in my office at any time.

Although not all of his books were sold to Hollywood, all have been The New York Times best-sellers. He has sold over 97 million copies worldwide, with over 65 million of them within the United States alone. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He is also considered to be very generous with his money. In 2011, he created the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to make more opportunities available to children from poor families. His foundation, which he started with his wife, creates scholarships for children from low-income families in rural communities. Sparks has had a very successful career, and he owes that to education. “The education I received prepared me for the world I would be facing in the future,” he said. Even though he is worth an estimated 75 million dollars or so, Sparks seems to live the values he presents in his books.

Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job? This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
A By stirring emotions. B. By blocking functions.
C. By setting restrictions. D. By changing regulations.
30. What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Undesirable. B. Unavoidable.
C. Unpredictable. D. Unbelievable.
31. What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era?
A Accept it passively. B. Deal with it positively.
C. Respond to it randomly. D. Defend it unconditionally.
A 29. C 30. B 31. B

根据第三段中“More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life.(更重要的是,相关法律法规必须确保人工智能造福社会,防止其威胁人类生命)”可知,我们可以通过相关法律法规确保人工智能造福社会,防止其威胁人类生命。
故划线词与B选项“Unavoidable(不可避免的)”为同义词。
根据最后一段中“Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.(因此,不必担心人工智能会取代我们的工作。虽然技术正在快速发展,但我们需要做的是欢迎人工智能时代的到来,而不是因为害怕未知而阻止它的发展)”可知,作者建议对于未来的人工智能时代的到来,不要因为害怕而去阻止它,而是应该欢迎人工智能时代的到来,即积极地对待它。故选B。

D 33. C 34. B 35. B

根据上文“Many people have a tendency to live in the past or the future. They constantly think about the past and worry about the future, and thus find it difficult to enjoy the good things in life in the here and now. You might unfortunately be one of these people.
A项中的“where you are”与小标题中的“Your Surroundings”相呼应。故选A。
本段的小标题为“Be Grateful for What You Have Now (感恩你所拥有的)”可知,本句是对小标题的更详细的解释;且F项中“appreciate”与小标题中的“Be Grateful for”、空后的“you are grateful for”相呼应。故选F。
本段小标题为“Show Acceptance (接受现实)”以及空前“If you want to learn how to be more present, you need to let go of how you think things should be and accept them for what they are. (如果你想学会如何活在当下,你需要放下你认为事情应该是什么样子的想法,接受它们的本来面目。)”介绍“接受现实”的方法:通过放弃幻想来接受现实。本空接着解释要放弃幻想的原因:人不可能控制发生在自身周围的一切。C选项“你不能控制发生在你周围的每件事。”符合语境。故选C。
【40题详解】
本段小标题为“Find Positive Social Support (寻积极正面的社交支持)”以及空前“The kind of social support you have in your life can also play an important role. Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people will increase your own positivity and happiness levels. (你生活中的社会支持也会发挥重要作用。和积极、支持你的人在一起会增加你的积极性和幸福感。)”提到“与积极正面的人交往会增加你自己的正能量和幸福感”,所以此处选E“相应地,这种正能量和幸福感会使你更关注身边正在发生的事情”承接上文。故选E。

I fell hard to the ground. At this moment I felt sad and ashamed that I couldn’t finish the race. I lay on the ground, unwilling to face the fact and the crowds. I imagined the sneering faces and don’t know how to react. Suddenly a hand reached out to me. I raised my head and found it’s Matt. “Let’s run together.” he said. There was just sincerity on his face, no mock. I believed I should trust him, and gave him my hand.
Arm by arm, we walked towards the finish line. The crowds fell into silence, and then broke into loud applause. What did they applaud for? I think I know. Bowing to Matt, I thanked Matt for his help and admitted he was the champion. “No, I participate in the race not for the champion, just for the participation. You are very excellent.” he said. I was surprised at first, and then realized that the full engagement and good faith deserved the real champion.
