Watermelon is one of the most popular fruits in summer. It has a round or oval (椭圆形的) shape, usually with a thick green rind (外皮) on the outside. The flesh (果肉) of the watermelon can be red, pink or yellow, and it is full of juicy and sweet taste.
Watermelons are not only delicious but also very healthy. They are rich in water, which can help people keep hydrated (含水的) in hot weather. Besides, they contain vitamins like vitamin C and some minerals (矿物质).
People enjoy eating watermelons in many ways. It can be simply cut into slices and eaten directly. Some people also like to make watermelon juice or add it to fruit salads.
China is the country that eats the most watermelons in the world. It’s not because foreigners don’t like watermelons but “they can’t afford them.” Do you know why? That’s because they’re too expensive in most countries.
It’s reported that a kilo of US watermelon is about $6.91 in New York, which is about 46 yuan in China. Watermelons are also famous for being expensive in Japan and South Korea. But things are different in China. According to the FAO (联合国粮农组织), China now is the world’s largest watermelon producer and customer.
Firstly, China’s land area is large. And the weather is just right for planting watermelons. With the large output (产量), the price is naturally much lower.
Secondly, countries like the USA and Australia have a wide land, but watermelons were not introduced there as early as in China. The local people prefer other fruits that were known earlier to watermelons. So, watermelons are not as popular as other fruits.
Thirdly, according to some reports, watermelons from foreign countries may not taste good. However, in China, we seldom eat watermelons that taste bad. Why is that?
Wu Mingzhu is an 80-year-old Chinese scientist who spends her whole life on the improvement of growing better watermelons. Thanks to her hard work, we can enjoy more delicious and much cheaper watermelons.

Watermelon is one of the most popular fruits in summer. It has a round or oval (椭圆形的) shape, usually with a thick green rind (外皮) on the outside. The flesh (果肉) of the watermelon can be red, pink or yellow, and it is full of juicy and sweet taste.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Peter,
Welcome to China! I am glad to tell you some Chinese customs to you.
When you have meals in China, you are supposed to keep quiet. And it’s impolite to talk with food in the mouth. And you should never stick chopsticks into the food. You are not supposed to use your chopsticks to hit an empty bowl or point at anyone.
Before visiting a friend, you need to make an appointment. It is impolite to show up at someone’s house for the first time with empty hands. So you should bring a small gift or some fruits, such as some apples or grapes. But don’t bring pears. We can also give flowers as a gift, but don’t choose white flowers. And we can’t give a clock as a present either, because these things have bad meanings in Chinese culture.
Hope these suggestions can help you understand China better.
Yours,
Li Hua
