Concerned about him, Kelvin went up to him with the only money he had—a dollar bill he had just been given for his good grades—and offered it to the man. The man in question turned out to be Matt Busbice, owner of sporting goods store Buckfeather. After being awakened by a fire alarm in his apartment complex, but discovering that there was no fire, he decided to grab a coffee to cool down. He then realized he had forgotten to pray that morning, so he stepped outside for a quick moment of reflection. “And I started to slowly open my eyes, and there’s a kid coming at me, about my height,” Busbice told the media. The businessman got himself ready for a conflict. “And I go, ‘What?’” Busbice said. “If you’re homeless, here’s a dollar,” Kelvin replied. “I always wanted to help a homeless person, and I finally had the opportunity.” The boy’s action deeply touched Busbice. After introducing himself and explaining the situation, he bought Kelvin breakfast, promising to stay in touch. Busbice later gave Kelvin a shopping tour at Buckfeather. However, what Kelvin initially expected to get out of this interaction was something else. “Joy, because I helped someone,” Kelvin said. “Give something away, and you feel like you’ve got a lot of things from it.” To which Busbice added, “If you give, you’re actually going to get more out of that. I couldn’t grasp that as a kid. And if we can spread that around, everything changes.” Kelvin shared that he initially thought Busbice was homeless due to his ashy knees, which Busbice explained were caused by psoriasis (银屑病). In the end, they both gained a lifelong friend. To Busbice, the whole experience made him feel richer than any other day in his life. 4. What did Kelvin do when he first saw Matt Busbice? A. He offered him a cup of coffee. B. He gave him a dollar out of kindness. C. He admired him for his social position. D. He observed his behavior with curiosity. 5. Why did Matt Busbice feel shocked at first? A. He was still in panic for the alarm. B. He didn’t want his prayer disturbed. C. He was unsure of the boy’s intention. D. He thought Kelvin was playing a trick. 6. What can we know about the outcome of the event? A. It’s surprising. B. It’s uplifting. C. It’s disappointing. D. It’s heart-warming. 7. What message does the story convey? A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Giving is more blessed than receiving. C Charlie from Sydney, felt driven and motivated when he first launched his small business. However, it wasn’t long before he became bogged down, having a decline in motivation. That’s the trouble with motivation. Fiona Kumfor, a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre, explains that motivation is influenced by the brain’s reward network, particularly the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) and striatum (纹状体). “The prefrontal cortex is responsible for higher-level thinking, like making decisions, reasoning and planning for the future,” says Dr. Kumfor. “The striatum is important in habitual processes or what we do without thinking.” A chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) is another important component of this reward network. It’s released when we do something that makes us feel good, from eating a tasty meal to going for a jog, and the prefrontal cortex and striatum are very sensitive to it. “Dopamine is really important for reward and motivation,” says Dr. Kumfor. “It’s the release of dopamine in the striatum and prefrontal cortex that ultimately determines our level of motivation and helps us decide what we’re going to do.” The trouble is that short-term decisions are more likely to yield a dopamine rush than things that take longer to achieve like losing weight or, in Charlie’s case, operating a successful business. “When we’re deciding whether to do something, we’re weighing up the costs versus the benefits,” says Dr. Kumfor. “If you take something like eating healthily, for example, the benefit might be that you lose some weight or you’re less likely to have certain medical conditions, but the cost is you’re potentially not going to be able to eat chips, ice cream or other unhealthy food.” To enhance motivation, Kumfor suggests making rewards more immediate and breaking down larger goals into smaller. Charlie found that rewarding himself for small accomplishments and turning these actions into habits were key to boosting his motivation. By doing so, he reduced the reliance on his prefrontal cortex for constant cost-benefit analyses and allowed the habit-forming striatum to take over, making positive behavioral changes more automatic. 8. What is the main idea of the text? A. The challenges of maintaining motivation. B. The operation of motivation and enhancing strategies. C. The role of the prefrontal cortex and striatum in motivation. D. The importance of dopamine in the brain’s reward network. 9. What chemical makes us happy? A. The dopamine. B. The striatum. C. The motivation. D. The prefrontal cortex. 10. Why do people fail to achieve long-term goals? A. Because they demand more dopamine. B. Because we prefer short-term decisions. C. Because they often have higher costs. D. Because we like to eat unhealthy food. 11. How did Charlie solve his motivation problem? A. Avoiding any form of reward. B. Focusing only on long-term goals. C. Ignoring the role of the prefrontal cortex. D. Rewarding himself constantly and making smaller goals. D There’s a whiteboard on the refrigerator in du Plessises’ kitchen the couple uses to plan dinners. But with two young children, full-time jobs and the nearest supermarket20 minutes away, figuring out what to eat can sometimes be challenging. To lighten the load, Mr. du Plessis regularly uses a grocery delivery service. America’s appetite for online grocery sales soared more than 50%, from $62 billion in 2019 to $96 billion in 2020, according to the Food and Drug Administration. One in five consumers now has groceries delivered to their door at least once a month. By 2029, it is estimated that the market will be worth $455 billion. Meanwhile, there’s been a steep increase in demand for restaurant takeout. Meal kits which come with premeasured ingredients are also experiencing strong growth. At the same time, food production and transportation make up as much as 1/3 of a typical US household’s annual contribution to climate change-inducing emissions. The Department of Agriculture estimates that 30% of food produced is wasted. So, changing consumer behavior to minimize waste and reduce transportation could have a significant impact on the overall pollution. In 2022 researchers from the University of Michigan modeled a single 36-item grocery cart to compare greenhouse emissions from an e-commerce grocery delivery and a traditional trip to the store to get the same items. They found that using an electric vehicle to pick up groceries could cut emissions by as much as half, compared to a gas-powered vehicle. They also found that home delivery could be an even better option. That’s because with a delivery vehicle, orders are often clustered, with a driver dropping off not just your groceries, but also hitting neighbors during the same run. When it comes to delivery services, Mr. du Plessis theorizes that because this guy’s literally delivering two burgers and like two sodas, such options would have a big footprint. “For the volume of food compared to the amount of carbon emitted, yeah, the equation doesn’t quite add up.” 12. What is the first paragraph about? A. Meal planning challenges. B. Time-saving meal strategies. C Benefits of grocery delivery. D. The du Plessis family’s lifestyle. 13. What do paragraphs 2 and 3 suggest about grocery delivery services? A. They bring about disorder in commercial competition B. They arouse a pressing need to change delivery mode. C. They bring attention to goods quality concerns. D. They offer convenience for meal preparation. 14. What does the word “clustered” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Grouped together. B. Separated individually. C. Delivered randomly. D. Packed tightly. 15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A. Innovations in Food Delivery B. The Challenges of Meal Planning C The Rise of Online Grocery Shopping D. Environmental Effects of Food Delivery Learning how to live your life with purpose can lead to a sense of general contentment. When I first laid eyes on him, he gave off the impression of being a rather stuffy old man with a bad reputation for shouting at kids. Strangely enough, he was oddly loved by the older students, but nobody in the first year knew the reason when we took seats in his class for the very first time. At the beginning of our very first history lesson, Mr. Radford shocked us all by declaring that the world is flat. He made this bold statement with great confidence and stated that he could actually prove it. Eagerly, he invited the entire class to quiz him or challenge his seemingly outrageous claim. This set the stage for a highly engaging start to the lesson. Instantly the entire class was thrown into a whirlwind of heated arguments. We quickly formed groups and passionately set out to prove that Mr. Radford was definitely wrong. We were determined to confirm the well-known fact that the world is round. The classroom was filled with the energy and excitement of a heated debate as we all tried to make our points and to argue against Mr. Radford. However, every answer, reason, or piece of evidence that we presented to Mr. Radford was countered (反驳) with a solid theory on his part. He took the time to explain in detail why we do not fall off the edge of the earth. Not only that, but he also provided even more persuasive reasons for why a compass (指南针) points north and south. Just as the bell rang and the class was supposed to come to an end, he spoke to us in a calm manner and said, “This is exactly the kind of reception that Copernicus (哥白尼) received when he tried to explain that the earth is not the center of the universe.” We were truly shocked and filled with respect by Mr. Radford’s method of teaching. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The “world is flat” lesson really taught me how to think. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 肇庆市2025届高中毕业班第一次模拟考试 英语 本试题共10页,考试时间120分钟,满分120分 注意事项: 1. A Some travelers are charmed by winter’s first snowfall, while others prefer to escape the season’s cold weather. It’s released when we do something that makes us feel good, from eating a tasty meal to going for a jog, and the prefrontal cortex and striatum are very sensitive to it. “Dopamine is really important for reward and motivation,” says Dr. Kumfor. “It’s the release of dopamine in the striatum and prefrontal cortex that ultimately determines our level of motivation and helps us decide what we’re going to do.” The trouble is that short-term decisions are more likely to yield a dopamine rush than things that take longer to achieve, like losing weight or, in Charlie’s case, operating a successful business. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第一段中“Fiona Kumfor, a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre, explains that motivation is influenced by the brain’s reward network, particularly the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) and striatum(纹状体). (悉尼大学脑与心智中心高级研究员菲奥娜·昆福解释说,动机受大脑奖励网络的影响,尤其是前额叶皮层和纹状体。)”及第二段内容可知,动力受大脑的特定区域和多巴胺等因素影响。这解释了动力是如何运作的;最后一段中“To enhance motivation, Kumfor suggests making rewards more immediate and breaking down larger goals into smaller. Charlie found that rewarding himself for small accomplishments and turning these actions into habits were key to boosting his motivation. (为了提高积极性,Kumfor建议更直接地提供奖励,并将较大的目标分解为较小的目标。Charlie发现,为小成就奖励自己并将这些行为变成习惯是提高他动力的关键。)”提出了增强动力的策略,包括让奖励更即时和分解大目标等,并以Charlie的经历为例进行说明。因此,整个文章围绕动力的运作和增强策略展开,故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“A chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) is another important component of this reward network. It’s released when we do something that makes us feel good, from eating a tasty meal to going for a jog, and the prefrontal cortex and striatum are very sensitive to it. (一种名为多巴胺的化学物质是这个奖励网络的另一个重要组成部分。当我们做一些让我们感觉良好的事情时,比如吃一顿美味的饭菜或者去慢跑,多巴胺就会被释放出来,前额叶皮层和纹状体对它非常敏感。)”可知,多巴胺带给人们快乐感,故选A项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“ ‘When we’re deciding whether to do something, we’re weighing up the costs versus the benefits,’ says Dr. Kumfor. ‘If you take something like eating healthily, for example, the benefit might be that you lose some weight or you’re less likely to have certain medical conditions, but the cost is you’re potentially not going to be able to eat chips, ice cream or other unhealthy food.’ (“当我们决定是否做某事时,我们会权衡成本与收益,”Kumfor博士说。“例如,如果你采取健康饮食等措施,好处可能是你减轻了一些体重,或者你不太可能患上某些疾病,但代价是你可能无法吃薯片、冰淇淋或其他不健康的食物。”)”可知,人们难以实现长期目标是因为长期目标通常成本更高,故选C项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Charlie found that rewarding himself for small accomplishments and turning these actions into habits were key to boosting his motivation. (Charlie发现,因小成就而奖励自己并将这些行为转化为习惯是提升动力的关键。)”可知,Charlie通过为小成就奖励自己并将行动变成习惯来解决动力问题,也就是不断奖励自己并设定小目标,故选D项。 D There’s a whiteboard on the refrigerator in du Plessises’ kitchen the couple uses to plan dinners. But with two young children full-time jobs and the nearest supermarket20 minutes away, figuring out what to eat can sometimes be challenging. In 2022, researchers from the University of Michigan modeled a single 36-item grocery cart to compare greenhouse emissions from an e-commerce grocery delivery and a traditional trip to the store to get the same items. The Challenges of Meal Planning C. The Rise of Online Grocery Shopping D. Environmental Effects of Food Delivery 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. Instantly, the entire class was thrown into a whirlwind of heated arguments. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 We were truly shocked and filled with respect by Mr. Radford’s method of teaching. We had entered the classroom with false notions towards Mr. Radford, guessing that he would probably be a bad-tempered teacher, but he completely shattered these impressions and opened our minds to new ways of thinking. His ability to engage us in a heated debate, skillfully countering every argument we put forward with well-thought-out theories, left us astounded. We couldn’t help but admire his creative approach to teaching, turning an ordinary lesson into a fascinating journey of discovery. It was really an unforgettable experience that resonated long after the lesson ended. The “world is flat” lesson really taught me how to think. It was the first time I had started to question what I was supposed to know and what was supposedly true. I discovered the ability to challenge conventional wisdom and embrace alternative viewpoints. Thanks to him, I learned to approach knowledge with an open mind, always hungry for deeper understanding. This experience instilled in me a lifelong passion for critical thinking and continuous learning, shaping me into a more thoughtful individual. It ignited within me a curiosity to explore and seek out opportunities for growth. 词汇激活 行为类 ①进入:enter/get into ②发现:discover/find out ③结束:end/finish 情绪类 ①惊讶:astounded/surprised ②难忘的:unforgettable/memorable 【点睛】[高分句型1] We couldn’t help but admire his creative approach to teaching, turning an ordinary lesson into a fascinating journey of discovery.
