Local residents have a welcoming place decorated with wood, leaves and comfortable furniture to gather and discover new and beloved books. They partner with local schools, libraries and nonprofits to reach as much of the community as possible. Changing Hands Bookstore Too popular to be called a hidden gem (宝石), this Arizona jewel recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It first opened in a 500-square-foot space in 1974. It hosts author events, poetry discussion groups and offers a Trade Counter where customers can bring in gently used books for store credit. The Last Chapter Book Shop The Last Chapter is an all-romance bookstore in Chicago that opened in 2023. B Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot (赤脚的) children of construction workers at a building site near her house in the upscale Koramangala district of Bangalore, India. “They were just walking around that building site with their feet bare, hard, dirty and bleeding, as though it was an everyday practice for them,” reflects Sia, now 17. And it was in that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast (对比) to her own life. She went back home, looked at her feet and opened her wardrobe doors, seeing shoes—many of which hadn’t been worn for months or years—piled up high. She headed to her mother’s wardrobe next, dusting off cobwebs from some shoes. Then she rushed to give them all for free to the same children she saw at the building site. Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need, epitomised by its motto: “Donate a shoe, save a soul.” The idea, which started as a dinner conversation with her parents, quickly grew. After she spread the word with posters and social media, emails from people who wanted to help came flooding in. Now in its fifth year, the organization runs distribution (分送) drives in which Sole Warriors collects used footwear, refurbishes (翻新) it and donates the finished products to people in need. That need, says Sia, is endless. In a world where the poorest half of the population owns just two per cent of the wealth, an estimated 300 million people can’t afford footwear. Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, shockingly more than 90 per cent end up in landfills In its first distribution drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number stands at around 28,000 across four countries, including the United States, China and Liberia, thanks to the hard work of a core team of about 80 volunteers. But the organization’s growth wasn’t without its challenges. When it came to looking for partners, such as a company that would do the refurbishments (翻新) free, Sia faced one difficulty after another before finding a partner in India’s Pressto Cobbler. To honor her impact, in 2021 Sia was given the Diana Award, one of the most prestigious (声誉高的) honors a young person can receive for social action. But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet” she says. 20. ________ inspired Sia to donate shoes to the children at the building site. A. Her parents’ and community volunteers’ help B. The sight of children without wearing shoes C. The piles of shoes in her parents’ wardrobe D. Her comfortable life in the upper class 21. The underlined word “dedicated” in para.4 can be replaced with ________. A. addicted B. exposed C. opposed D. devoted 22. What can be inferred about Sia’s charitable work? A. Sia met many challenges caused by Pressto Cobbler. B. Sia is ambitious to expand her project by donating more shoes. C. Sia was awarded Diana Award for her work at 20. D. Sia’s project recycles 90% of used shoes in landfills. 23. Which of the following is probably the best title of the text? A. Task Achieved by Willpower B. Sufferings at Indian Building Site C. Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes D. Favourite for the Diana Award C Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling story is more than just a metaphor (隐喻). Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the main reason why more than 100 amphibian species were nearly dying out. The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust (调节) their temperature in this hotter and drier world. Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians would be serious because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者). “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group. Luckily, habitat protection and other measures have been taken to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase the amphibian conservation.” 24. How is the topic introduced? A By sharing a story. B. By raising a question. C. By explaining ideas. D. By listing facts. 25. What is the main reason for the decrease of amphibians according to the new study? A. The loss of habitats. B. The lack of feathers. C. The spread of disease. D. The rise of temperature. 26. What will happen if the number of amphibians decreases? A. Wolves will depend more on insects. B. Predators will be the key role of the web. C. The ecosystem will become more diverse. D. The food chain will be destroyed. 27. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians? A. Uncertain. B. Curious. C. Hopeful. D. Worried. D Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work. There are several effects of the free rider problem. The first is the Tragedy (悲剧) of the Commons, a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource act for their own benefit and, in doing so, finally use up the resource. For example, imagine that a group of people share a piece of land where they all graze (让……吃草) their cattle. If each person just tries to increase their own short-term gain, they will let their cattle graze as much as possible. However, if everyone does this, the land will quickly become over-grazing and will not be able to support any cattle. Another effect is that the free rider problem can lead to a situation in which people do not have access to important goods and services. This is because providers may not be able to get back the costs of providing the goods or services if too many people free ride. Imagine that a city decides to build a new hospital through donations. If too many people rely on others to donate, rather than donate themselves, then the hospital may not be built at all. This means that people who need medical care in the area may not have access to it. There are several solutions to the free rider problem. Government solves the problem by collecting tax (税) dollars to support public services. Theoretically, taxes are related to income, so fair cost-sharing can be achieved. Communities can turn their public resource into a private or club resource, charging money to make sure everyone who uses it contributes to it. This will limit overuse and, over time, may even lead to altruistic (利他的) behavior. That is, many people may like the idea of making a small contribution to a resource that they use. 28. Which of the following may best show the nature of free-riding? A. Many hands make light work. B. Let George do it. C. Every coin has two sides. D. Less is more. 29. What is one of the effects produced by the free rider problem? A. The costs of providing the goods and services are rising. B. People tend to maximize their long-term gain. C. A group of people have to share goods and services. D. Individuals overuse a shared resource for personal gain. 30. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed? A. By giving an example. B. By explaining a definition. C. By referring to a study. D. By making a comparison. 31. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To call on the government to solve the free rider problem. B. To inform the readers of the free rider problem. C. To stress the importance of making donations. D. To draw people’s attention to public services. Do you have a passion for art? At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news. Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won't be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.”Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned (招手示意) the boys into his arms.“Things will change when I get back to work.” My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn't talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income. At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked. Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry. “Me, too. Daddy's foot’s … this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms. “Yeah..We're in hard times," I said.“It makes Mommy and Daddy sad." “But we don't have to be sad," I added, hoping to brighten the mood. “Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up," I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank...earn some more..and surprise them with gifts!" “I can run errands(跑腿) for Aunt Em and neighbors to earn money," I offered. “Yeah," Rodney added, “I and Stevie can return bottles and save the deposit money... instead of buying candy!" He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow. “Yeah!”Stevie clutched his hands together. We had a plan! Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don't talk about it during the day." 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024—2025学年高二年级第一学期期中测试卷 英语试题 2024.11 (本试卷满分150分 考试时间120分钟) 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分24分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项,并标在试卷的相应位置。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. 【此处可播放相关音频,请去附件查看】 Where does the conversation most probably take place? The machine made a horrible sound and then stopped working. M: It will be OK, I think. However, I doubt if they would make you pay for it. W: I’m afraid not. The company who makes it has a policy to fix it M: So what to worry about? W: Well, it will surely leave a bad impression on my boss. 听下面一段独白,回答以下小题。【此处可播放相关音频,请去附件查看】 14. How many washers might a larger laundry place (洗衣店) have? A. 12. B. 24. C. 48. 15. What do most laundry places have? A. Video games. B. Free Wi-Fi. C. Hair dryer. 16. What do people often do while waiting in the laundry place? A. Eat some food. B. Chat with the employee. C. Put their clothes out in the sun. 【答案】14. B 15. B 16. A 【解析】 【原文】 People who live in cities usually take their dirty clothes to a laundry place called a “laundromat”. These public businesses are usually open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. A smaller laundromat might have 12 washers and 12 dryers, while a larger one might have twice that number. Most places do not have any employees there, as there are simple instructions posted near the machines and everything can be done without assistance. Most people bring their own washing soap, but there is often a machine that sells small packages in case you run out or forget yours. During the weekend, it can be hard to find an open machine but it is much easier during the week. Many laundry places have TVs, magazines, or free Wi-Fi. Recently, many laundry places have added cafés or bars. Because people usually spend a few hours doing their laundry, having a drink or a meal is a convenient and fun way to pass the time. Of course, when so many people are washing their clothes close to each other, it is easy to make mistakes. 第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分50分) 第一节 阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 A April 27 brings Independent Bookstore Day, the biggest bookstore celebration of the year when bookstores around the country host events and offer discounts. Here’s a selection of bookstores we love writing about. Books on Main Books on Main feels like you’re reading inside a tree-house in a Wisconsin forest. It opened in June 2023. Local residents have a welcoming place decorated with wood, leaves and comfortable furniture to gather and discover new and beloved books. Off the Beaten Path Bookstore First opened more than 30 years ago, Off the Beaten Path has been through three sets of owners and three locations. Current owners Mike and Danielle Skov say one thing has never changed: The promise to be a welcoming and inclusive (包容的) space. The store hosts author events along with community mixers like Blind Date with a Book, where you wrap one of your favorite books and “trade” it with a fellow book fan in hopes of finding a new favorite and a new friend. 17. Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, shockingly more than 90 per cent end up in landfills (废物填埋场). In its first distribution drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Favourite for the Diana Award 【答案】20. B 21. D 22. B 23. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了女孩Sia的善行,她在13岁时看见建筑工人的孩子们没有鞋子穿,之后在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下成立了慈善组织Sole Warriors,致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子。 【20题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段内容““They were just walking around that building site with their feet bare, hard, dirty and bleeding, as though it was an everyday practice for them,” reflects Sia, now 17. And it was in that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast (对比) to her own life. (现年17岁的Sia回忆道:“他们只是光着脚,又脏又硬,还流着血在建筑工地上走来走去,仿佛这是他们的日常习惯。”就在那一刻,Sia意识到了自己生活中令人不安的反差。)”和第三段关键句“Then she rushed to give them all for free to the same children she saw at the building site. (然后,她赶紧把它们全部免费送给她在建筑工地看到的那些孩子。)”可知,看到孩子们在建筑工地上光着脚走来走去,Sia感到难过,于是,她捐赠了自己家里不用的鞋子,由此可知,看到孩子们不穿鞋激励Sia向建筑工地的孩子们捐赠鞋子。故选B项。 【21题详解】 词义猜测题。根据画线单词句中“a charity (一个慈善机构)”和“Donate a shoe, save a soul. (捐赠一只鞋,拯救一个灵魂。)”可知,这是一个捐赠鞋的慈善机构,由此可知,这是一个致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子的慈善机构,“devoted”意为“致力于”,能够表达画线单词在句中所要表达的意思。故选D项。 【22题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段关键句“But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet” she says. (但她的工作还没有完成。“我们的目标一直是让一百万只脚有鞋穿”她说。)”可知,她的还有更大的慈善目标,想让更多的人有鞋穿,由此可知,Sia雄心勃勃地通过捐赠更多鞋子来扩大她的项目。故选B项。 【23题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合最后一段关键句“But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says. (但她的工作还没有完成。“我们的目标一直是让一百万只脚有鞋穿”她说。)”可知,文章讲述了女孩Sia的善行,她在13岁时看见建筑工人的孩子们没有鞋子穿,之后在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下成立了慈善组织Sole Warriors,致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子,她会设身处地为别人着想,“Walking in Someone Else’s Shoes”意为“设身处地为别人着想”,能够概括文章主要内容。故选C项。 C Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. A. By sharing a story. A. Uncertain. B. Curious. C. Hopeful. D. Worried. 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. D 27. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了研究发现气候变化在导致两栖动物数量减少,分析了两栖动物数量减少会带来的影响。 【24题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling story is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).(每个人都知道这一点:在一锅水里慢慢地给青蛙加热,青蛙不会跳出来。没有意识到热量的轻微增加,它会一直呆在那里,直到——嗯,直到它死去。当谈到全球气温上升对两栖动物的影响时,煮青蛙的寓言不仅仅是一个比喻)”可知,文章通过分享温水煮青蛙的故事引入主题。故选A。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the main reason why more than 100 amphibian species were nearly dying out.(2004年至2022年间,气温上升成为100多种两栖动物濒临灭绝的主要原因)”可知,根据这项新研究,导致两栖动物数量减少的主要原因是温度的升高。故选D。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“But losing amphibians would be serious because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者). ‘Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,’ said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.(但是失去两栖动物将是灾难性的,因为它们通常是生态系统食物网的关键环节,它们吞噬昆虫,反过来又被更大的捕食者吃掉。 ‘没有这些两栖动物来填补这个角色,我们将看到这个食物网的崩溃,’在奥斯汀一家环境组织工作的Neam说)”可知,如果两栖动物的数量减少,食物链将被破坏。故选D。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“‘It’s not all bad news,’ said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. ‘But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase the amphibian conservation.’(‘也不全是坏消息,’国际自然保护联盟两栖动物小组负责人Jennifer Luedtke说。 ‘但我们真的必须在这一改善的基础上,大幅增加对两栖动物保护。’)”可知,Luedtke对两栖动物的未来充满希望。故选C。 D Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. 【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章客观地解释了“搭便车”现象的概念、所带来的影响以及提出的一些解决措施。 【28题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work.(搭便车意味着人们无需支付任何费用就可以从一项服务中获益。如果人们不做出同等的贡献就能获得利益,也会出现这种情况。所以搭便车者总是享受某种资源或服务的好处,而让别人做这些工作或做更多的工作)”可知,选项B“Let George do it.(让乔治来做吧。)”表示“让别人去做自己职责范围以内的事”,最能体现搭便车的本质,意味着让别人去做事,而自己享受成果,符合搭便车者不付出成本却享受利益的行为特点。故选B。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“There are several effects of the free rider problem. The first is the Tragedy (悲剧) of the Commons, a situation in which individuals with access to a public resource act for their own benefit and, in doing so, finally use up the resource.(搭便车问题有几个影响。第一种是‘公地悲剧’,在这种情况下,拥有公共资源的个人为了自己的利益而行动,最终耗尽了资源)”可知,搭便车问题产生的影响之一是共享资源因个人追求私利而被过度使用。故选D。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Another effect is that the free rider problem can lead to a situation in which people do not have access to important goods and services. This is because providers may not be able to get back the costs of providing the goods or services if too many people free ride. Imagine that a city decides to build a new hospital through donations. If too many people rely on others to donate, rather than donate themselves, then the hospital may not be built at all. This means that people who need medical care in the area may not have access to it.(另一个影响是搭便车问题可能导致人们无法获得重要商品和服务的情况。 故选A。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Free-riding means people can benefit from a service without paying anything. It also arises if people can get benefit without making equal contributions. So a free rider always enjoys the benefits of a resource or service while letting someone else do the work or do more work.(搭便车意味着人们无需支付任何费用就可以从一项服务中获益。 Do you have a passion for art? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 We awoke in the morning, transforming from sad children to the secret agents on an important mission! The following weeks saw me dashing home from school each day determined to earn a penny. I was usually greeted by secret winks and grins- one with a missing tooth, and the other with tiny, straight teeth- both assuring me our secret was safe. A few days before Christmas, we gleefully went shopping. We bought Mom a new apron, and for Dad, a pair of leather slippers. The night of Christmas Eve seemed endless. I awoke occasionally, or one of my brothers woke me asking, “How long till daylight?” On Christmas morning, we hurried into the living room and handed the gifts to Mommy and Daddy. Surprised and stunned, they showered us with tons of confusing questions. “How did you..?” “Where did you..?” “Who gave you...?"" As we explained how we'd schemed, earned and saved our money, their faces relaxed into expressions of astonishment. Then, with glistening tears, Mom and Dad wrapped us three into their arms. On this special Christmas morning, with the five of us hugging, talking, laughing and listening with fresh affection and gratitude, I understood that rich or poor, we would keep together and be happy in one another. 词汇激活 行为类 ①决定做某事:determine to do/decide to do ②冲回家:dash home/rush home/hurry home 情绪类 ①惊讶的:astonished/surprised/stunned ②开心地:gleefully/delightedly/happily 【点睛】[高分句型1].
