But Bashaw couldn’t find it. She knew it had been picked up after her grandmother’s death when the family was going through her belongings, 15 years ago. And she knew her uncle, who lived in Vermont, had given it away there, hoping the new owners would hold on to it. As it turned out, they sold it. So she decided to make a post online in a group for Vermonters, hoping she could track down the buyers and get the piece back. Bashaw attached three photos of the artwork and the post was shared about 600 times. Then, in Vermont, Alvin and his wife Nora, saw the post and realized they had bought the artwork. They arranged a meeting. Despite being nervous about meeting strangers from the internet, Bashaw found them “so nice and such great people.” “With all the bad news and everything going around, it’s good to see something really nice,” Nora said, who offered to give it back to Bashaw. In an updated post, Bashaw shared her excitement at being reunited(团聚) with her uncle’s artwork, thanking the community for sharing and helping her find the piece. Now, Bashaw feels like a piece of her mother and grandmother has come back home. “It’s really nice because I don’t have very many things of my mother or my grandmother and actually, it’s been extremely hard for me to even find a picture of me and my grandmother together. We were so close, and it just makes me so sad… I hope she can see it now that I have it back because she was looking for it too.” she said. 4. Why did Bashaw post online? A. Because she enjoyed sharing her life. B. Because she’d like to make new friends. C. Because she hoped to sell her belongings. D. Because she wanted to get an artwork back. 5. Which of the following best describes Alvin and Nora? A. Kind and friendly. B. Caring and curious. C. Brave and confident. D. Determined and honest. 6. What did Bashaw do after meeting Alvin and Nora? A. She reunited with her uncle. B. She expressed thanks online. C. She decided to buy the artwork. D. She found a picture of her mother. 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. A Girl Meets Strangers From the Internet B. A Community Helps a Girl Find Her Family C. A Social Media Post Helps Reunite a Family D. A Couple Gives an Artwork Back to its Owner C According to a recent international study, children who feel more connected to their families are more likely to flourish Robert Whitaker and colleagues at Columbia University in New York surveyed over 37,000 children aged 11 to 13 in 26 countries about family connections and flourishing. The children were asked to rate their family connections on a five-point scale with statements like “My family cares about me” and “I feel safe at home.” They were also asked to rate their growth on a 0-10 scale with statements like “I like myself” and “I’m positive about my future.” Based on their answers, the researchers got “family connection” and “flourishing” scores for each child. They found a connection between the two scores. Children with the strongest family bonds were 49% more likely to flourish than those with the weakest. “I think it’s an important finding because it shows that providing a caring family environment isn’t just about avoiding the negative things, it’s also about building kids’ abilities,” says Sanders at the University of Queensland in Australia. Children with good family relationships are probably more likely to flourish because they have “an internal sense of safety”, says the researchers. This sense of safety allows children to understand who they are and accept who they are, and to grow and learn, have positive relationships and develop a sense of mastery and purpose. Not having to worry about home life also means children can devote more mental energy to learning, socializing and “spreading their wings”, says Sanders. To develop healthy family relationships, Whitaker says the best thing that parents and other caregivers can do is to spend quality time with children. This can involve simple activities like eating meals, going for walks or doing chores together, he says. “Being present, open, interested and attentive at these times is the foundation of family connection,” he says. 8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The aim of the study. B. The result of the study. C. The process of the study. D. The importance of the study. 9. What does the underlined word “bonds” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Values. B. Traditions. C. Backgrounds. D. Relationships. 10. Why do children more connected to families grow better? A. Because they feel safer in their inner heart. B. Because they receive more material support. C. Because they can focus more on socializing. D. Because they can avoid more negative things. 11. What does Whitaker strongly suggest parents do? A. Be open to trying new techniques. B. Take part in activities with children. C. Help develop children’s social skills. D. Give children presents at important times. D An accent is a regional form of pronunciation. The way English speakers pronounce words can be enough to show which country, or even city, they are from. For example, the way someone says “water” with a long ‘a’ sound might tell us they are from the southern part of the United States. So it’s helpful to know some common English accents. Typically English accents fall into three main kinds. They include British English, North American English and Australian English. Received Pronunciation is the official form of speech in England. It’s widely considered the standard form for broadcasting, stage performance and education. The term Cockney describes the accent found in East London. It is mainly spoken by working-class individuals and has developed through the influence of industry and social changes. The Yorkshire accent in England’s Yorkshire can be traced back to Old English. It heavily depends on slangs (俚语), making some of its phrases challenging to understand, even for native English speakers from other regions. The General American accent is considered a standard form of English spoken in North America. It’s not tied to any specific region or state but rather stands for a standardized form of English commonly taught in schools and used for media broadcasts. The accent tends to be quick and clear in its pronunciation. As a result it’s often used by actors, news hosts and other public figures who need to communicate clearly with a broad audience. The Canadian accent, which belongs to North American English, is often mistaken for Americans by non-native English speakers, but it has unique features. For example, the letter “t” can also be pronounced differently, sometimes like a soft “d” (for example, little=liddle). The accent has been described as more neutral (中立的) than other accents of English worldwide. It may be because of its history, as Canada used to be a British colony before being heavily influenced by American pop culture and media. 12. What does the writer want to tell us by the example in paragraph 1? A. English accents vary greatly. B. Accents tell where people are from. C. It’s difficult to learn English. D. All English speakers have accents. 13. What makes it hard for people to understand Yorkshire accent? A. Its dependence on slangs. B. The influence of social changes. C. The strange pronunciation. D. Its connection with Old English. 14. What can we learn about General American accent from the text? A. It is limited to a specific state. B It stands for the most popular accent. C. It is usually used in formal situations. D. It is often mistaken for Canadian accent. 15. What may be talked about in the following paragraph? A. The development of British English. B. The changes of Received Pronunciation. C. The history of General American accent. D. The basic information of Australian accent. Learning English can be challenging. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.” “What are you doing here? You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!” My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. Finally I gathered my courage, stepped into the hall and signed up for drum classes, which was my childhood dream. Wednesday came, and along with it my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an older man looking at me. “Stephanie? I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said. People make me nervous. That’s the way I’ve always been. But Mike had a very calm manner, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. “You are fine. I see so much potential in you,” he told me. I felt full of excitement and energy. Soon my thirty-minute lesson was over. Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage. Her mother and grandmother had loved it. A Couple Gives an Artwork Back to its Owner 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. Robert Whitaker and colleagues at Columbia University in New York surveyed over 37,000 children aged 11 to 13 in 26 countries about family connections and flourishing. 8. C 9. D 10. A 11. As a result, it’s often used by actors, news hosts and other public figures who need to communicate clearly with a broad audience. 12 What does the writer want to tell us by the example in paragraph 1? 12. B 13. A 14. C 15. It’s not tied to any specific region or state but rather stands for a standardized form of English commonly taught in schools and used for media broadcasts. The accent tends to be quick and clear in its pronunciation. As a result, it’s often used by actors, news hosts and other public figures who need to communicate clearly with a broad audience(通用美式口音被认为是北美英语的标准形式。 Learning English can be challenging. I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. 46. disappointed nervous jump know praise word return walk take excited class remember As I ______ towards the door, my heart beat fast. You’re fifty years old!’ My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. 根据第三段“Finally I gathered my courage, stepped into the hall and signed up for drum classes, which was my childhood dream. 根据第四段“Wednesday came, and along with it my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. I kept nervously looking at the time. 根据第四段中“I kept nervously looking at the time.” 根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. 根据倒数第三段中“I felt full of excitement and energy. 根据倒数第二段中“Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. 根据最后一段“I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. 可知,作者开车回家,go back home与return home意思相同,空前有不定式符号to,空处应为动词原形,故填return。 根据第二段“ ‘What are you doing here? You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!’ My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. 可知作者在报名课程之前内心充满了自我怀疑和纠结,她对自己作为五个孩子的单身母亲且已五十岁还要去追求梦想这件事感到不安,体现出她的焦虑和不自信;根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. ‘You are fine. I see so much potential in you,’  he told me. I felt full of excitement and energy. Before taking the class, she was worried/anxious and not confident. Just follow your dream.’ 可知,孩子的这些话语不断在作者脑海中回响,成为她鼓起勇气报名课程的重要动力,鼓励她去追求自己的梦想及根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. ‘You are fine. I see so much potential in you,’ he told me. Because her kids encouraged her and the drum teacher praised her for her performance. /Because her kids and drum teacher gave her much support. 根据倒数第二段中“Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage. 及最后一段“I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. She would share her experience/excitement/happiness with her kids in the class and continue to practice. /She would thank her children for encouraging her to follow her dream bravely. Dear Mike, ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】参考范文 Dear Mike, I’m sorry to hear that you argued with your parents over the use of the cellphone. To begin with, keep calm and try to understand their concerns. Then you can have a face-to-face communication with them, sharing what you think patiently. Secondly, as a double-edged sword, a smartphone works in your favor, but sometimes it works against you. Therefore, it’s suggested that you should control your time spent on it.
