I enjoy the hunt, the good price and the unrecognized treasures. I find old textbooks, ex-bestsellers, and books on subjects I’ve never heard of but now I must learn all about. I don’t search for rare books, first editions, or leather-bound editions but books that are worth reading. Rereading, for me, is a pleasure during retirement. The theater and the concert hall become less appealing to me, along with crowds. Staying alone and reading books have become extremely important to me. Literature needs the flesh of experience to have its full effect. Different books offer me insights and ways of expressing that stuck in my mind as grains of sand in an oyster — now shine like pearls. My taste in books improves with age. While packing for a move, which occurs at intervals of five to seven years, I clear my shelves and pick my books. I abandon a few, later regret my decisions, and look for them again. Several years ago, I got rid of books related to my job — architecture. Some were design guides, reference books, product catalogs, and things that went out of date. Some were historical or centered on a period or an architect. These had given me many hours of pleasure. Will I ever open their covers again? Certainly. I held on to the red bulk of Sir Banister Fletcher’s A History of Architecture and books on Paris, Rome, and Boston. I gave away drafting equipment and instruments. I threw out rolls and rolls of paper, and old drawings of projects completed long ago, some of which had even been damaged. This time, I stay put in a cottage that suits my status and I’ve moved on in spirit. No doubt I will acquire more used books and throw away more books as passions grow and fade, like feathers changing with the seasons. 4. What does the author consider most important when choosing used books? A. Their appealing covers. B. Their reasonable prices. C. Their collection value. D. Their excellent content. 5. What does the author realize as he grows older? A. He has a deeper understanding of reading. B. His attitude towards work changes. C. His communication skills improve. D. He has a small circle of friends. 6. Why does the author mention books on architecture? A. To show some books are worth rereading. B. To explain his love for architecture. C. To suggest we avoid making poor decisions. D. To recommend Sir Banister Fletcher’s books. 7. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph? A. He decides to stop throwing away used books. B. He will read more books that suit his interests. C. He will enlarge his collection of used books. D. He is bad at using advanced drafting equipment. 【答案】4 D 5. A 6. A 7. 根据第一段“I don’t search for rare books, first editions, or leather-bound editions but books that are worth reading.(我不寻找珍本、初版或皮装帧的书,而是寻找值得一读的书)”可知,作者只寻找值得阅读的书,也就是说作者最看重的是书精彩的内容。 根据第二段“Different books offer me insights and ways of expressing that stuck in my mind as grains of sand in an oyster — now shine like pearls. My taste in books improves with age.(不同的书给了我不同的见解和表达方式,那些在我脑海里就像牡蛎里的沙粒一样的东西,现在却像珍珠一样闪闪发光。我对书的品味随着年龄的增长而提高)”可知,随着年龄的增大,作者对读书有了更深的理解。故选A。 根据第三段“I abandon a few, later regret my decisions, and look for them again.(我放弃了一些,后来后悔我的决定,并再次寻找他们)”以及“These had given me many hours of pleasure. Will I ever open their covers again? Certainly.(这些给了我许多小时的快乐。我还会再打开他们的封面吗?当然会)”可推知,作者提到建筑书籍的目的是想用亲身经历说明这些书值得再次阅读。故选A。 根据最后一段“No doubt I will acquire more used books and throw away more books as passions grow and fade, like feathers changing with the seasons.(毫无疑问,随着激情的生长和消退,就像羽毛随着季节的变化而变化一样,我会买更多的旧书,也会扔掉更多的书)”可知,作者将读更多符合他兴趣的书。故选B。 C Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That’s the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking. A phone user’s exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. The teens’ scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear. 8. The underlined word “impairment” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean “_______”. A. result. B. damage. C. mistake. D. improvement. 9. Which of the following can be learned from Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3? A. The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total. B. The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones. C. Researchers paid little attention to the teens’ habits of using phones. D. The teens’ ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test. 10. According to the study, teens who use their phones to their right ears a lot do worse in _______. A. matching numbers. B. reading signals. C. remembering shape. D. learning words. 11. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Cell Phone Use and Safety Warnings. B. Facts About Cell Phone Use at School. C. Dangerous Levels of Cell Phone Use Among Teens. D. Teen’s Cell Phone Use Linked to Memory Problems. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第一段中划线词上文“Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test.(经常使用手机且将手机贴近右耳的青少年,在一种记忆测试中的得分更低)”可知,手机辐射会造成记忆的损伤,故可推测impairment的意思为“损伤,损坏”。 根据第二段中“The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory.(这些青少年进行了两次记忆测试,间隔一年。将近700名瑞士青少年参加了这个图形记忆测试)”及“The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory.(研究志愿者还参加了一个语言记忆测试)”可知,青少年进行了两次记忆测试,间隔一年,每次测试包括一项图形记忆测试和语言记忆测试,共有4次测试。故选A。 根据最后一段中“But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year.(但是,那些通常将手机靠近右耳,并且受到较高水平辐射的青少年,在一年后得分更低一些)”及“The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.(负责记忆形状的能力的脑区位于右耳附近)”可知,根据这项研究,经常使用手机放在右耳附近的青少年在记忆形状方面表现较差。 通读全文,结合第一段“Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That’s the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we’re on the go.(在一项记忆力测试中,经常打电话并把手机举到右耳前的青少年得分更低。这是一项新研究的发现。这种记忆损伤可能是手机辐射的副作用之一,手机在我们忙碌的时候用来保持联系)”可知,本文主要是一项研究发现,青少年使用手机与记忆问题有关。故选D。 D Everybody likes to laugh sometimes, whether at a funny joke, an amusing incident or a humorous photograph or sound. The great thing is that once we’ve had a good laugh, we feel happier. It would seem therefore, that bringing a bit of humour into more serious situations might be good for us. Places like a humourless office or a tense classroom could sometimes need a good dose of laughter. I know that in my workplace, a bit of hilarity can go a long way towards making it a more enjoyable place to spend eight or so hours a day. Seeing the funny side of things can certainly lift our spirits and that in turn can make us feel better about what we’re doing. Maybe we should get inspiration from Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada. When he walks around the firm’s Ontario headquarters he shares his sense of humour to bond (与……建立密切联系) with his staff. He says, “It can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more effective at what they do.” Humour can be used by teachers in the classroom too. It’s a good way to break the ice with students and create a more relaxing atmosphere which is good for learning. But we have to be careful; not everyone laughs at the same things. While some of us may admire a work colleague or fellow student for their clever and well-told joke, others may consider them sarcastic (讽刺的), offensive or just an idiot! According to Professor Schweitzer, from the University of Philadelphia’s Wharton School, a worker or boss who successfully uses humour is seen as both confident and competent, which in turn increases his or her status. He says, “Being funny is taking a risk, and being risky shows confidence.” 12. What does the underlined word “hilarity” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Humour. B. Horror. C. Stress. D. Time-off. 13. What can we infer from the passage? A. Bad jokes can have positive effects. B. People are always admired for their jokes. C. Humour can help employees get more effective. D. Seriousness can have a bad impact on your health. 14. What do we know about Steve Carlisle? A. He likes telling jokes to his employees. B. He uses his humour to break ice with students. C. He often leaves his office to watch over his staff. D. He considers humour a reflection of confidence and competence. 15. In which column will you probably find the text in a magazine? A. History. B. Lifestyle. C. Travel. D. Sport. A 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第一段中“It would seem therefore, that bringing a bit of humour into more serious situations might be good for us.(因此,在更严肃的场合中加入一点幽默似乎对我们有好处)”;第二段“Places like a humourless office or a tense classroom could sometimes need a good dose of laughter.(像毫无幽默感的办公室或紧张的教室这样的地方,有时需要一点笑声)”以及划线词后文“can go a long way towards making it a more enjoyable place to spend eight or so hours a day”可知,对于严肃的办公室或者紧张的教室之类的地方,有时一剂笑声就会带来大不同,所以在上班的地方,一点点幽默就能让这个每天工作八小时的场所变得更愉快。 故选 A。 根据第三段“When he walks around the firm’s Ontario headquarters he shares his sense of humour to bond (与……建立密切联系) with his staff. He says, “It can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more effective at what they do.”(当他在公司位于安大略省的总部走动时,他会分享自己的幽默感,与员工建立联系。他说:“它可以帮助人们感到更放松,更舒适,从而更有效地工作。”)”可知,幽默能帮助员工在工作中更高效。故选 C。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“When he walks around the firm’s Ontario headquarters he shares his sense of humour to bond (与……建立密切联系) with his staff.(当他在公司位于安大略省的总部走动时,他会分享自己的幽默感,与员工建立联系)”可知,Steve Carlisle 喜欢给员工讲笑话。故选 A。 根据第一段“Everybody likes to laugh sometimes, whether at a funny joke, an amusing incident or a humorous photograph or sound. B As a college student in Boston, I formed the habit of buying used books. C Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. D Everybody likes to laugh sometimes, whether at a funny joke, an amusing incident or a humorous photograph or sound. The great thing is that once we’ve had a good laugh, we feel happier. It would seem therefore, that bringing a bit of humour into more serious situations might be good for us. Places like a humourless office or a tense classroom could sometimes need a good dose of laughter. I know that in my workplace a bit of hilarity can go a long way towards making it a more enjoyable place to spend eight or so hours a day. A. History. B.
