The Virgin Islands National Park is a tropical (热带的) paradise on the island of St. John, which covers more than half of the small island. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, where the climate is warm all year. The island's white sand beaches and clear blue seas are considered to be among the most beautiful in the Caribbean, gaining reputation and popularity among visitors across the world.
How the national park was formed
Laurence Rockefeller was an American millionaire, businessman and conservationist. He visited St.John in the 1950s. He quickly fell in love with the island's clean, pure beauty. He first purchased a small resort there, Caneel Bay. He also purchased more than 2,000 hectares of the island and donated it to the government. That donation created the U.S.Virgin Islands National Park.It was officially opened as a national park on December 1, 1956.
How to get to the park
The only way to reach the park is by boat. Some people arrive on their own sailboats. Others come in on large cruise ships.Visitors also arrive on water taxis from the island of St. Thomas.
What to do at the park
From the tropical hills to the blue waters, there are many things to do at the Virgin Islands National Park. Visitors enjoy fishing, camping, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling (浮潜), and bird watching. Of all of the park's beaches, Trunk Bay Beach is said to be the most striking. Below the clear blue water is a 200-meter snorkeling path. Hawksnest Beach is also a popular place for snorkeling. Near the shore are three small reefs of Elkhorn Coral. The Elkhorn Coral gets its name from its shape. The reef looks similar to the huge horns (角) of an animal called elk. It is a very rare kind of reef.Scientists say it is in danger of becoming extinct.
The Virgin Islands National Park is often called America's paradise. It protects St. John's pristine nature, and preserves the record of human history in the Caribbean.

In the heart of the Kanien’keha Nation (卡尼恩克哈部族) in Canada, McComber, a native language teacher reflected on a question raised by Maori (毛利) language advocate Sir Karetu: what was his dream for the future of his language?
Kanien’keha, the Mohawk language, is endangered, and for decades, McComber has worked hard to operate a native language school. At the turn of the century, as it encountered more barriers, McComber looked around the world for help and inspiration, and Karetu was the answer. “Don’t wait for money or approval; just do the work,” Karetu told him. It’s the same message Karetu carried with him decades ago, when te reo Maori, the Maori language, was also on the line.
In the early 1970s, young Maori advocates in New Zealand marched to the government, demanding Maori be taught in all public schools. In 1982, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi established Kohanga Reo, an engaging language program where Maori was the only language taught, spoken and used both in the classroom and at home, and the courses focused on their history and culture. “Grandparents became teachers,” she says. “The difference-maker was that the Kohanga Reo was entirely community-led. Families raised the money to rent classroom spaces, and volunteers planned and taught classes.”
Translated in English as “language nest”, the Kohanga Reo model quickly became an important cultural export and inspired other minority communities worldwide. “Our parents ruled,” a student of McComber’s nest school says, “They wanted to teach us the beauty of our language, our culture, and who we are. And it has given me the confidence to speak and read with ease in both English and Kanien’keha.”
The model helped communities view the world through their ancestors’ eyes, ensuring the survival of their way of life. “It’s not just about language,” McComber can now answer that question. “It’s everything.”
4. Why did McComber turn to Karetu for help?
A. Karetu also spoke Kanien’keha. B. Karetu once faced a similar crisis.
C. He needed his financial support. D. He desired his tips on language learning.
5. What contributed to the success of Kohanga Reo?
A. Expansion of public schools. B. Flexibility of the courses.
C. Rule of the students’ parents. D. Support from the community.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The impact of the Kohanga Reo model. B. The importance of parents’ involvement.
C. The procedure for building the nest school. D. The case of a student finding his real identity.
7. By saying “It’s everything”, McComber suggests ______.
A. guaranteeing the survival of their own schools B. keeping their culture for future generations
C. purifying their unique minority language D. practicing the tradition of their ancestors
C
When it comes to heart attacks, the first image that often comes to mind is that of a middle-aged man, clutching (紧抓) his chest and struggling with a pained expression. This is what you’re most likely to see when searching “heart attack” online. You’re far less likely to think of a female heart attack victim.
According to Forbes, medical research has traditionally been led by men, which undoubtedly leads to a lack of female-related data and information in medical research. From diagnosis to treatment, gender differences are often overlooked. For example, a 2017 study found that women are at greater risk of dying of heart attacks than men.
The reason lies in the difference in heart attack symptoms between men and women. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the top-ranking hospitals in the US, women are less likely to have chest pains, which are considered as a typical symptom of heart attacks. Instead, they have more atypical symptoms, including shoulder pain and arm pain. As a result, many women were initially given a mistaken diagnosis, delaying access to the right treatment and increasing the fatality rate.
Even if a female is correctly and immediately diagnosed with a heart attack, there’s another problem: medicine. Research has found that certain medicines used to dissolve blood clots (凝块) right after a heart attack can be helpful for a lot of men, but might lead to serious bleeding issues in women.
Although women are no longer seen as inferior in most parts of the world today, the fields of healthcare and medicine still see a male’s body as the “standard” human body. For example, Valium has been promoted as the “mother’s little helper” for treating anxiety among women. However, a study noted that the medicine developer had never conducted a single trial involving women until 2003.
Take a look at the medicine you have taken recently. There’s always one recommended dosage (剂量) for adults. But who is this dosage meant for? An adult in general, or specifically an adult man?
8. What is the main point of the first paragraph?
A. There exists a gender gap in online searching.
B. People have a fixed gender impression of heart attacks.
C. Female heart attacks are often observed by researchers.
D. Researches on heart attacks are mainly conducted by men.
9. Why is the death rate for heart attacks higher in women than in men?
A. Symptoms on women are more severe.
B. Symptoms on women are more misleading.
C. Women don’t seek medical help timely.
D Women resist proper treatment and medicine.
10. Why does the author mention Valium in Paragraph 5?
A. To demonstrate gender-based healthcare inequalities.
B. To call for correct use of medicine on different people.
C. To describe the historical use of Valium by both genders.
D. To show Valium’s effectiveness in treating women’s anxiety.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Differences in heart attack treatments.
B. The importance of female data in medicine.
C. The gender gap in healthcare and medicine.
D. Misunderstandings about female data in research.
D
Are you eyebrow blind? TikTok users seem to think so — many have complained on the platform about makeup (化妆品) wearers’ apparent inability to spot whether they’re blindly following makeup trends or wearing what looks good on their faces. Though “eyebrow blindness’ and other types of “beauty blindness” aren’t exactly considered mental health trouble, people’s tendency to follow trends — even when they look silly or take risks doing so — is definitely a real phenomenon.
So, what does psychology say bout tend following? Fist following rends isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental health trouble. Instead, says psychologist Pamela B Rutledge, it’s perfectly normal. The reason for trend following relates to humans core need to belong to a social group and comet with others. Multiple psychological frameworks argue that human connections are as important as basics like access to food and shelter because humans evolved to rely on one another for survival.
But why do trends themselves have such a pull? “Our brains are hardwired to notice what’s unusual,” Rutledge says. Thus, we notice outliers and attention-grabbers, making trends even more appealing for those bold enough to follow them.
No one is exempt from following crazes (狂热), noticing trends, or signaling their real belonging to social groups. But one group in particular is even easier to follow trends — even risky ones: Tweens, teens, and young adults. As children start the road toward adult independence, they look for ways to express their individuality. This can produce sometimes desperate attempts to prove affliation(隶属关系) with socially credible in-groups and can fuel desire to stand out with the help of trends.
So, next time you put on makeup — or get dressed, order a meal in public, or purchase a vehicle — consider that your decision may not be as personalized as you may think. “It’s really just an inborn (天生的) response, one that can be explained by our need to fit in with or stand out from the crowd.” says Rutledge.
12. According to the first paragraph, a beauty blind person might ________.
A. oppose makeup trends publicly
B. follow makeup trends uncritically
C. rely on social media for makeup advice
D. take risks with untested beauty products
13. What’s a primary motivation of trend following?
A. Financial profit.
B. Social connection.
C. Artistic expression.
D. Character weakness.
14. Which can best replace the underlined words “exempt from” in paragraph 4?
A. Free of.
B. Engaged in.
C. Exposed to.
D. Concerned about.
15. What might Rutledge think of trend following?
A. It’s a personalized choice.
B. It mirrors people’s mental health.
C. It results from lack of self-confidence.
D. It’s a natural response to social signals.

Holidays abroad are easier than ever thanks to smartphones. With the autumn weather fast approaching, it’s the perfect time of year to jet off and get away from hustles and bustles. ____16____ Here are some top tips to make sure you’re not caught out on your break abroad.
Treat yourself to a power bank
The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage. ____17____ So you’re going to want some extra support so you don’t end up going AWOL (absent without leave) when your phone dies. That’s why I recommend picking up a USB power bank, which will give you a little bit of extra juice to keep you connected to the rest of the world.
Enable Data roaming (漫游)
____18____ The good news is that it is easier than ever to stay connected to the net when abroad. Make sure you check with your network provider what your roaming plan is. In many countries it is straightforward to buy a SIM card for a local network, with a much more generous data allowance. ____19____ If you’ve got a newer phone, it will probably support “eSIM” — where you can simply use an app like Holafly or Airalo while connected to wifi to set yourself up on a new network temporarily.
Download offline application software
And finally, you need to get your apps in order. Once you reach your destination you’ll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translation app — Apple and Google make their own version of both. And modern translation apps are particularly exciting. ____20____ Then you get a clear translation. Make sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like a local. Bon voyage!
A. What good is a phone without Internet access?
B. You simply wave your phone at the scanner instead.
C. In fact, you may not even need a physical card anymore.
D. Why do you need to get your phone ready to be connected?
E. But when you’re away from home, you’re probably using it so much more.
F. You can typically just wave the camera of your phone over pretty much anything.
G. But before leaving for the airport ensure your phone is ready for the journey ahead!

“No, little girl. You can’t get in without the money.” Jeffrey, the bus driver, told a little girl who wanted to get on the bus but only had a few pennies. She must have been around seven years old, and he wasn’t in the mood to deal with unaccompanied children that day.
“Please, sir. I want to visit my grandmother,” the little girl begged. “Then go ask your parents for the money and come back next time,” Jeffrey replied and gestured with his hand for the girl to get out. She finally left the bus with her shoulders lowered. Jeffrey saw her sit down at the bus stop and drove off.
He finished his route and went home for the lunch, greeting his wife, Greta, and sitting down on the couch to rest. When he browsed his Facebook posts, an image caught his attention. A picture was shared of the little girl he had just turned away a few hours earlier. The word “Missing” was written on top of the image. He learned that the girl had disappeared a day ago, and her parents were desperately trying to find her.
“Dear! What have I done?” he asked himself, standing up and going to the front door. When Greta asked where he was going, Jeffrey said, “Greta! Quick! Call 911 and this number,” showing her the picture of the girl. “I saw this girl at a bus stop earlier, and I turned her away because she didn’t have enough money. I’m going to find her, but please make those calls.” Having told her where the bus stop was, he went out.
Jeffrey rushed to his car, speeding to the bus stop. Hopefully, the girl was smart enough to stay in one place. He couldn’t believe how careless he had been earlier. She was a little girl all alone. As he drove to the bus stop, Jeffrey vowed to be more careful in the future, especially when it came to children.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Dear Tom,
How is everything getting along recently? From your last email, I know that you have attended a class to learn Chinese, which I think is a good idea.
As for how to learn Chinese well, interest is the best teacher, without which we can’t go a long way in language learning. Besides, you’d better combine listening with speaking, which can help you learn it more quickly and easily. In addition, I recommend you to seize every opportunity to practice it. As a saying goes, practice makes perfect.
Needless to say, if you want to learn native Chinese, no place is better than China, where native speakers are available. It’s also a pleasure for me to keep you company and take you to some famous attractions.
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 Finally, he saw a tiny figure sitting on the bench at the spot. Jeffery felt relieved and delighted to see the girl staying safe and sound. Trying to calm himself, Jeffery decided to talk to her gently. He inquired about her name and why she had left home. “I was going to Grandma’s house. My mom wouldn’t let me go.” Sarah replied, swinging one of her feet and looking at the concrete floor. “Your parents are searching for you, and they’ll be here soon,” he assured her, and the little girl gave him a small smile.
A few minutes later, the police and another car approached them. A woman got out of the vehicle and rushed toward Sarah. The little girl got up and ran to her, yelling, “Mommy!” The police officers approached Jeffrey and he told them the entire story and how he regretted not letting her on the bus, so he came to find her. Sarah’s parents thanked him for what he had done. From then on, Jeffrey helped anyone short on cash who got on his bus, and he always watched out for the kids that were alone because they needed someone like him to do the right job.
