Everyone faces difficulties in their life. Daniel Kish was born with a special eye illness and lost his eyesight when he was only 14 months old.
Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He learned to make clicks(咔哒声) with sonar(声呐) to help him move around. Kish now moves about using sonar. He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle by himself on public roads. And he started the organization World Access for the Blind(WAFTB) in 2000, teaching others how to use sonar. In the interview with National Geographic, he explains how the sonar works.
“When I make a click sound, it produces sound waves. These waves reflect(反射) off surfaces around and return to my ears. My brain then deals with the sound and turns it into pictures in my mind. Each click is like a camera flash, which helps me make a 3-D picture of my surroundings for hundreds of feet. It's like having a conversation with the environment.”
Kish feels it is exciting to ride a bike using sonar, although he needs to click twice a sound, much more than he usually does. “It may sound a bit dangerous to move around the world in this way,” he says. “But most people in the world live in fear of things that they imagine. I love hiking and mountain-biking. I go almost everywhere. And I've never had an accident and hurt myself.”
He is happy to be able to help more blind children to improve their life. “We've served over 10,000 students in nearly 40 countries,” he tells the reporter. “Many students are surprised how quickly results come. Seeing isn't in the eyes. It's in the mind.”
34. When did Daniel Kish lose his eyesight?
A. When he grew up. B. When he was born.
C. When he went to work. D. When he was 14 months old.
35. Why does Kish move around using sonar?
A. Because he is good at making clicks. B. Because it makes him see the world.
C. Because he has a great interesting science. D. Because it is good for him to keep healthy.
36. What can we learn about World Access for the Blind(WAFTB) from the passage?
A. It offers the blind free bicycles B. It teaches the blind to use sonar.
C. It helps blind find more friends D. It sells sonar products to the blind.
37. Which of the following is the right order showing how the sonar works?
① The sound waves reflect off surfaces. ② The person makes a clicking sound.
③ The brain turns the sound into pictures. ④ The sound waves reach the person's ears.
A.②①④③ B.②③①④ C.①④②③ D.①③②④

In a room at Stanford University, scientists are studying a small animal called gecko. It's an amazing animal because it can move very quickly up and down a tree and it can even walk upside down on ceilings. The scientists are quite interested in the gecko's feet. They want to use the same design on their own robot. The metal robot looks very similar to the gecko. It has four feet which can also walk up walls made of glass or plastic. However, it still has a more difficult time when it tries to walk upside down.
Animals and plants can teach humans a lot about design and engineering. As a result many engineers, scientists and designers spend time studying them. When they have a problem, nature often has the answer. This science is called Biomimetics. Bio-means “studying living things”and Mimetics means“copying the movement of things”. In other words, scientists or biomimeticists study animals and plants in order to copy the design.
Take a whale for example. Engineers in Canada are studying their flippers because they move so effectively through water. The engineers believe the shape can also improve the movement of wind turbines(润轮机). Similarly, the boxfish is another animal from the sea which is helping car producers in Germany. Mercedes Benz is using the shape of the fish for one of its new cars. The shape makes it faster and save energy.
Velcro is probably the most famous example of biomimetics. Most people have some Velcro on an item of clothing. It was invented by the Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1948. He was walking in the countryside when he pulled a plant's bur(刺果) from his trousers. He noticed how the bur could stick so well to his clothes. He worked on his idea and the result was Velcro. People use it because it is cheaper than the traditional zipper.
Biomimetics has helped to design our world and there are many more future possibilities. However,it might take a long time to discover all the possibilities because it has taken nature thousands of years to design its animals and plants.
38. How does the writer organize Paragraph 1?

B. The shape of the whale's flippers can help improve the wind turbines.
C. The new kind of car in Mercedes Benz travels as fast as the boxfish.
D. Velcro makes picking up burs on the plant quicker than before.
41. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Engineering in the Future B. Plants and Biomimetics C. Nature and Its Design D. Biomimetics and Inventions.

Nowadays, there are more and more cafes in libraries and bookshops. New study found that a certain level of noise in a place like a cafe can actually develop your creative ideas. Here are some other very interesting findings of the study.
It is found that sound stimuli(刺激) in the background helps us improve decision making. Some have even called it the coffee shop effect(影响). So, the jazz music and light conversation aren't noisy any more-they could help you come up with your next great work.
One of the biggest things about coffee shops is the social-improvement effect: you go there, you see other people working and it makes you just naturally start working as well. Just watching them can encourage you to work harder.
Visual variety(视觉多样性) helps in solving a problem, but requires you to think outside the box. If you always stay in your office, it will be sometimes difficult to have solutions. Coffee shops, though, generally have visual stimuli. And hitting up different coffee shops each time keeps things even more different.
Pablo Picasso, Bob Dylan, Jean-Paul Sartre. Simone de Beauvoir and JK Rowling-whether they're painters, singers, songwriters, philosophers or writers, people across nations and centuries have developed their creativity working at a table in a cafe.
42. Which of the following is social-improvement effect mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. You are better at making decisions in the cortee shop. B. You start working as you see other people working
C. You can easily find ways to solve different problems. D. You don't care about the noisy sound in the cafe.
43. What does the underlined phrase “hitting up”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Visiting. B. Building. C. Studying. D. Running.
44. Why does the writer mention the famous people in Paragraph 5?
A. To introduce them. B. To describe a situation. C. To support his idea. D. To express the feeling.
45. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The music and pictures in different coffee shops. B. The importance of drinking coffee every day.
C. The famous people who work in coffee shops. D. The good sides of working in the coffee shops.
