(24-25高三上·江苏常州·期中)Han Kang, the South Korean author best known for her extraordinary novel, “The Vegetarian,” was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday - the first writer from her country to receive the award.
Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.”
Han, 53, was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. Her father was also a novelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and moved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.”
When Han was 9, her family moved to Seoul just months before the Gwangju uprising (起义), when government army fired on crowds of protesters, killing hundreds.
The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising.
“It was like two unsolvable riddles imprinted on my mind: How can humans be so violent, and how can humans be so noble?” she said. “When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human.”
Han studied literature at Yonsei University in Korea, and her first published works were poems. Her first novel, “Black Deer,” which came out in 1998, was a mystery about a missing woman. In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.”
24.What are Han’s novels themed at?
A.Political systems. B.Financial struggle.
C.Human nature D.Cultural conflicts.
25.What can we learn about Han’s childhood from paragraph 3?
A.Father’s success: inspired her. B.Economic difficulty strengthened her.
C.Frequent move destroyed her. D.The habit of reading comforted her.
26.Why does the author mention the Gwangju uprising?
A.To indicate the importance of history. B.To show its influence on Han’s writing.
C.To reveal the cruelty of politics. D.To stress its impact on Korean people’s life.
27.What is “The Vegetarian” mainly about?
A.A deer. B.A woman. C.A plant. D.A vegetable.

(24-25高三上·江苏无锡·期中)New research has found a link between the height of ceilings in exam halls and the performance of students. While the shape of a room can’t make you smarter, the environments we’re in have an effect on us. The authors of the study suggest that big and open rooms, with high ceilings, make it harder for students to focus on what’s in front of them.
A previous study from some of the same researchers, making use of brain mapping technology and virtual reality, had found a relationship between cognitive ability and the perceived size of a person’s surroundings. Here, the team wanted to do some real-world testing.
“We were curious to apply our lab findings to a real-world dataset and see if being in a large space while having to concentrate on an important task would result in a poorer performance,” says Isabella Bower.
The study analyzed exam results from 15,400 students over eight years and across three campuses referencing their scores against what was expected based on the coursework they’d previously submitted.
In exam rooms with high ceilings, students tended to underperform compared to those taking exams in rooms with a “standard” ceiling height, even after accounting for age, gender, time, subject and prior exam experience—other factors potentially affecting the results.
“The key point is that large rooms with high ceilings seem to disadvantage students and we need to understand what brain mechanisms (机制) are at play, and whether this affects all students to the same degree, ”says Bower.
Those are questions that future research can find out. It’s clear that environment matters—and that we might not give students the best chance for success by holding exams in rooms that aren’t custom-built for the purpose.
“Examinations have been a key part of our education system for over 1,300 years, shaping students career paths and lives,” says Jaclyn Broadbent. “It’s crucial to recognize the potential impact of the physical environment on student performance and make necessary adjustments to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.”
28.How is the new study different from the previous one?
A.It is conducted in a real-world situation instead of in labs
B.It rules out potential factors that may influence the results
C.It makes use of brain mapping technology and virtual reality
D.It finds a link between environment and student performance
29.What is future research expected to find out?
A.Whether exam rooms with high ceilings will disadvantage students.
B.Whether other factors could potentially affect the results of the study.
C.Whether students are equally affected in exam rooms with high ceilings.
D.Whether brain mechanisms affect students in exam rooms with high ceilings
30.What’s Jaclyn Broadbent’s attitude to holding exams in high-ceilinged rooms?
A.Supportive. B.Objective. C.Opposing. D.Unclear.
31.In which column of a magazine can we probably find this text?
A.Health B.Science C.Celebrity D.Architecture

(24-25高三上·江苏南通·期中)Imagining a human being without historical sense is scary. The thought of living exclusively in a present moment is scary. Scarier still is the thought of an entire generation, not to mention society, operating with a lack of a sense of history. And yet that is exactly the situation in which we find ourselves today.
The people and events of history may be rooted in the past, but how we talk about those things, what we write about them, and how we teach them — in other words, how we practise history as the record of human experience — tell us a lot about who we are and what we value right now. Thinking of ourselves as a chapter in an as-yet unwritten history book, on the other hand, is likely to force deeper self-reflection: Whose stories will we stand up for? What values will we defend? What models will we offer following generations? In an era of environmental change, rising inequality and great shifts in the international political context, we need to understand how our institutions have developed. History gives us power. No other subject helps us to understand so comprehensively what it is to be human.
The implications of ignorance of what have happened are incredible, but the ignorance itself isn’t entirely surprising given the lowered status of history in most schools. The discipline of history has become sidelined (边缘化). “History fights for its place in the curriculum with geography,” Dr. Bain observed, “but its attention to time, place and context is what makes it really distinct.” In other words, history doesn’t simply tell us how to be good citizens: It equips us with the knowledge we need to comprehend our world clearly, and the ability to analyze it accurately.
Clearly, in an age of “fake news”, engaged citizens need to be culturally literate, critical thinkers. There is no better subject than history to develop an appreciation of context and an ability to look for evidence. We should expect a logical history curriculum for our children. If it were common to hear graduates claim that they’d never learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide, there would be a severe protest. So should there be now.
32.What is the situation the author mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.The fear of the past. B.The ignorance of history.
C.The exclusion of the present. D.The dissatisfaction of society.
33.What does the author mainly stress in paragraph 2?
A.Consequences of overlooking history.
B.Significance of mastering all subjects.
C.Insights from history for today and tomorrow.
D.Resolutions of the current international issues.
34.Which one of the following ideas might Dr. Bain agree with?
A.Critical thinking is key to studying history well.
B.Schools should enhance the status of history curriculum.
C.Ignorance of history is not as terrible as expected in schools.
D.Geography proves more meaningful and practical than history.
35.What does the underlined sentence “So should there be now.” mean?
A.The historical sense can help us differentiate the news.
B.People are dissatisfied with graduates’ ability to calculate.
C.We should make history curriculum more logical and critical.
D.We should pay the same attention to history as to other subjects.

(24-25高三上·江苏苏州·阶段练习)Minimalism, born out of a 20th-Century art movement, now refers to a lifestyle that helps people to get rid of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s really important in life. 36 Why is minimalism so popular? Here are a few of the top reasons people are choosing to live a minimalist lifestyle.
Minimalism gives people more meaning
One of the main reasons people choose to become minimalists is that they want to achieve more meaning in their life. 37 Through practicing minimalism, people reduce their possessions to ones that make them truly happy and make more time for the experiences they really value.
The lifestyle has helped people to be inspired to pursue their passions and craft their life in a way that brings them the most joy.
Minimalism gives people more space
38 A minimalist design is usually black and white colored rooms with smaller framed furniture. People enjoy the cleanness of the look as well as the fact that it allows for more space in the house.
There’s a sense of peace and relaxation with not having space that’s cluttered (杂乱的) and messy. 39
Minimalism gives people more offline time
A spin-off (派生物) that’s risen out of the movement is digital minimalism. This concept is probably particularly appearing to millennials who’ve grown tired of social media and being addicted to their technology. 40 They’re choosing to limit their cell phone use and focus on more productive and meaningful pursuits.
It’s the popularity of this concept that’s helped to draw others to living more minimalist.
Would you like to build a minimalist lifestyle? And what is your reason for it?
A.Minimalists have enjoyed clearing up their spaces.
B.It has become something of a trend all over the world.
C.Minimalism is popular with many people because of its simple design.
D.They feel they’ve lost sight of the things that are most important to them.
E.They are choosing to abandon video games in favor of the minimalism style.
F.Minimalism has helped people to really appreciate their home and be more organized.
G.They are choosing to quit social media to spend time in person with family and friends.

To this day, I don’t know why Rosalie was so mean to me. She never missed an opportunity to laugh at me, or even threaten me. I would hear her jeering (嘲讽的) words when I walked out to catch the bus home. I could feel the heat of her stare when I bent in my seat in the cafeteria and avoided looking anywhere near her direction. I was somewhat terrified of her.
I knew I had to take action, but how? I was one of those quiet, timid (胆小的) seventh graders who talked non-stop at home but wouldn’t say two words at school. How could I break the ice?
My family lived in a small town of about three thousand people, and it seemed that my dad knew every single one of them. What was even more astonishing was that everyone seemed to know him. One day, I asked my mom how this was possible. She thought for a while and then said, “Well, Jenn, your dad never lets anyone stay a stranger. He talks to everyone he sees, and then he gives them that big smile of his. I guess it’s infectious because people just love him.”
Mother’s words set me thinking. I could smile. I mean, everyone could do that, right? I decided to try it out. I would take my experiment straight to Rosalie.
The next morning, I didn’t hear a single word my math teacher said in the fourth period because I was too busy thinking about what I was about to do. Finally, the bell rang. I gathered my books, slipped them into the locker and headed to the cafeteria. My heart was pounding in my chest, and my hands were sweaty. I ran my tongue over my teeth that felt dryer than the Mojave Desert. Then I did a practice smile that I was sure looked more like a grimace (苦相). I took a deep breath and struggled to my feet to keep moving forward.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Para 1: I saw Rosalie in the distance coming toward me, looking as mean as ever.

Dear Jason,
I hope you’re doing well. I am writing to share some feedback regarding the cooperative learning approach we’ve been using in our English class this semester.
Cooperative learning has been an essential part of our learning process. We’ve had group discussions, team projects, and various collaborative activities, where we have enjoyed a refreshing change from traditional teaching methods. From my perspective, the experience has been quite positive. I find that working in groups not only enhances our understanding of the material, but also improves our communication and teamwork skills. It’s an extremely engaging way to learn and has boosted my confidence in using English.

Rosalie looked shocked. Then she frowned. I hurried past, sure that she was going to laugh at my back. The next day, I tried again. This time, my teeth weren’t chattering so badly and my smile came out in a more natural way. Rosalie was no longer surprised but her frown remained.
The third day, unlike the first two times, she even gave me a little half-smile. Half it was, but the ice was starting to melt. All of a sudden, I found myself not a timid girl any more. Over the next few weeks, I continued my trial. Rosalie gradually got used and started smiling back. One day, she came over and asked to sit beside me. We became friends! All because I had the courage to smile my way out. From that day on, I gave many strangers big

W: Currently, our biggest issues are damage to homes, and the loss of wildlife habitats.
M: Yes. That's why I've invited you to this seaside park today. You and your group of government figures are in a unique position to help. With your assistance, we'll be able to pass new environmental protection policies.
W: I agree, and I'm so glad you invited us here. We've received money for environmental projects but haven't learned the best ways to defend our land from rising sea levels.
M: The most urgent step is creating a policy to build natural barriers to prevent damage to houses. I have researched plans for how to protect our coastline. Through this process, we'll defend many families in our community.
W: Sounds perfect.

M: I know you’re starting studies for your business degree this fall, Hillary. And before you leave town, start university, and begin adult life, I’d like you to work for our family’s business.
W: I can work at the restaurant. But I don’t know anything about cooking.
M: That’s no problem. You’ll be our newest host and assistant manager.
W: Wow, sounds so interesting!
M: You’ll work at our restaurant from the first week of June until the beginning of August. These months’ learning will lay a strong foundation for business for you. I promise.
W: I’ll do it. Experience is one of the best ways to learn.
M: Business is about what advantage we can offer others. We help suppliers by buying their food, materials, and equipment. Then, we satisfy customers by feeding them and treating them like family. The more advantages you provide, the more money you make. That’s business.

W: That’s right. I can’t believe I’ll be leaving home for college in just two months!
M: What are you planning to study?
W: Meteorology.
M: Is that the study of stars and planets?
W: No, you’re thinking of astronomy. Meteorology is the study of weather systems and climate.
M: Right! So, what kind of job will you be able to get when you graduate? Will you be giving the weather report on TV?
W: Ha-ha! Possibly ... Who knows? TV weather reporters are usually trained meteorologists. But there are plenty of other opportunities. I could become a research scientist, or a weather software developer... And a lot of private companies hire meteorologists, too. For example, airlines.
M: Really? Interesting!
W: But what I’d really like to do is become a great “storm chaser”, like Tim Samaras. He tracked and followed tornadoes and hurricanes his whole life.
M: Why? Isn’t that a rather dangerous job?
W: It can be. Storm chasers go after weather events to study and document them. Their research furthers our understanding of weather patterns and helps improve early warning systems. Their work saves lives!
M: That’s wonderful. But I haven’t decided which major to choose. I’d like to have a gap year first before I go to college.

18.What do we know about Kantamanto?
A.It's the capital of Ghana. B.It's a secondhand market. C.It's the biggest city in the world.
19.How many donated clothes go to waste every week in Kantamanto?
A.About 8 million. B.About 20 million. C.About 40 million.
20.What are the effects of clothing waste on fishing in Accra?
A.Fish often mistake parts of old clothes for food.
B.Sea birds often get caught in the old clothes.
C.Fishing nets often catch old clothes.
【答案】18.B 19.A 20.C
【详解】
W: Many of us donate old clothes to charity shops, but did you know that most aren’t sold? According to The Guardian, only about 20% are sold. The rest are packed and sent abroad, often to places like Ghana, either for resale or to be thrown away.
In Ghana’s capital, Accra, there is a huge secondhand clothing market called Kantamanto. It’s one of the biggest markets in the world. Every week, this market receives around 20 million pieces of used clothing. Unfortunately, about 40% of these clothes end up as waste. Workers either burn this waste or bury it underground, but since Accra is close to the sea and doesn’t have enough space for landfills, a lot of waste ends up on the beaches and in the water.
This is a big problem for the environment. Clothing waste harms sea life. Sea birds might mistake parts of old clothes for food, and fish often get caught in the old clothes, preventing them from growing properly. This also hurts the local economy. Fishermen find it harder to catch fish because their nets often bring up clothes instead.

C
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.C 31.B

Here, the team wanted to do some real-world testing.(之前,一些研究人员利用大脑映射技术和虚拟现实技术进行的一项研究发现,认知能力与一个人周围环境的感知大小之间存在关系。在这里,该团队想做一些现实世界的测试。)”可知,这项新研究与之前的研究不同,因为它是在现实世界中进行的,而不是在实验室中进行的。故选A项。
29.细节理解题。由文章倒数第三段“The key point is that large rooms with high ceilings seem to disadvantage students and we need to understand what brain mechanisms (机制) are at play, and whether this affects all students to the same degree, (关键在于,天花板高的大房间似乎对学生不利,我们需要了解大脑机制在起什么作用,以及这是否会对所有学生产生同样的影响,)”以及倒数第二段“Those are questions that future research can find out. (这些都是未来研究可以发现的问题。)”可知,未来的研究有望发现学生在天花板很高的考场是否同样受到影响。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“‘Examinations have been a key part of our education system for over 1,300 years, shaping students career paths and lives,’ says Jaclyn Broadbent. ‘It’s crucial to recognize the potential impact of the physical environment on student performance and make necessary adjustments to ensure all students have an equal opportunity to succeed.’(Jaclyn Broadbent说:‘1300多年来,考试一直是我们教育体系的重要组成部分,塑造了学生的职业道路和生活。至关重要的是要认识到物理环境对学生表现的潜在影响,并做出必要的调整,以确保所有学生都有平等的成功机会。’)”以及第一段“The authors of the study suggest that big and open rooms, with high ceilings, make it harder for students to focus on what’s in front of them.(该研究的作者认为,天花板很高的宽敞开放的房间让学生更难专注于眼前的事物。)”可知,Jaclyn Broadbent是反对在天花板很高的房间里举行考试。故选C项。
31.推理判断题。由文章第一段“New research has found a link between the height of ceilings in exam halls and the performance of students.

32.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Imagining a human being without historical sense is scary. The thought of living exclusively in a present moment is scary. Scarier still is the thought of an entire generation, not to mention society, operating with a lack of a sense of history. (想象一个没有历史感的人是可怕的。只活在当下的想法是可怕的。更可怕的是,整整一代人,更不用说整个社会,在缺乏历史感的情况下运作。)”可知,作者在第一段提到了人们对历史的无知。故选B。
33.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“The people and events of history may be rooted in the past, but how we talk about those things, what we write about them, and how we teach them—in other words, how we practise history as the record of human experience—tell us a lot about who we are and what we value right now. Thinking of ourselves as a chapter in an as-yet unwritten history book, on the other hand, is likely to force deeper self-reflection (历史上的人物和事件可能植根于过去,但我们如何谈论这些事情,我们如何写它们,以及我们如何教授它们——换句话说,我们如何将历史作为人类经历的记录来实践——告诉我们很多关于我们是谁以及我们现在看重什么。另一方面,把自己想象成一本尚未书写的历史书中的一个章节,可能会迫使我们进行更深层次的自我反思)”以及“In an era of environmental change, rising inequality and great shifts in the international political context, we need to understand how our institutions have developed. History gives us power. No other subject helps us to understand so comprehensively what it is to be human. (在一个环境变化、不平等加剧、国际政治环境发生巨大变化的时代,我们需要了解我们的制度是如何发展起来的。历史赋予我们力量。没有其他学科能如此全面地帮助我们理解什么是人类。)”可知,作者在第二段主要强调了历史对今天和明天的洞见。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“The discipline of history has become sidelined (边缘化). “History fights for its place in the curriculum with geography,” Dr. Bain observed, “but its attention to time, place and context is what makes it really distinct.” In other words, history doesn’t simply tell us how to be good citizens: It equips us with the knowledge we need to comprehend our world clearly, and the ability to analyze it accurately.(历史学科已经靠边站了。“历史与地理在课程中争夺自己的位置,”贝恩博士说,“但它对时间、地点和背景的关注使它真正与众不同。”换句话说,历史不仅仅告诉我们如何成为好公民:它还让我们具备了清晰理解世界所需的知识,以及准确分析世界的能力)”可知,历史是如此的重要,学校应该提高历史课程的地位。故选B。
35.词义猜测题。根据文章最后一段“There is no better subject than history to develop an appreciation of context and an ability to look for evidence. We should expect a logical history curriculum for our children. If it were common to hear graduates claim that they’d never learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide, there would be a severe protest. (没有比历史更适合培养对背景的鉴赏能力和寻找证据的能力了。我们应该为我们的孩子准备一个合乎逻辑的历史课程。如果经常听到毕业生声称他们从未学过加减乘除,那一定会引起强烈的抗议)”可知,没有比历史更适合培养对背景的鉴赏能力和寻找证据的能力了,我们应该重视历史学科,应该和数学等其它学科一样对待。划线处和D项:We should pay the same attention to history as to other subjects.(我们对待历史应该像对待其他学科一样重视)合乎题意。故选D。

第二节(满分25分)
67.(24-25高三上·江苏常州·期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)所给开头两段如下:
Para 1: I saw Rosalie in the distance coming toward me, looking as mean as ever.

Para 2: The third day, unlike the first two times, she gave me a little half-smile.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I saw Rosalie in the distance coming toward me, looking as mean as ever. For the first time in my life, I made eye contact with her. I actually managed to force a smile through my chattering teeth.
From that day on, I gave many strangers big smile of mine, just like my father’s!
