Our skin might be tougher than you might think, as it can heal (修复) itself repeatedly over time. Scientists have made a new material that is as tough as human skin. This electronic skin can heal itself more than 5,000 times!
Scientists from Saudi Arabia made the new “e-skin”. In fact, e-skin is not something new. Scientists have made e-skin before to help repair human skin and to make prosthetic (假肢的) arms and legs. But other kinds of e-skin are usually not very stretchy (可延展的), so they break easily. They are also not as sensitive (敏感的) as real skin.
However, the new e-skin has solved these problems. Scientists used a hydrogel (水凝胶) to make the e-skin, which makes it very stretchy. Then they put a layer of sensors (传感器) on the hydrogel. These sensors can respond (反应) in less than 0.1 seconds and sense things from 20cm away.
When used in humans, the new e-skin can get medical information, such as someone’s blood pressure (血压). But the scientists hope for a future for this technology that is “beyond biology”. It could be used to build soft robotics (机器人), aircraft and even furniture one day.
