You can do no wrong with these lakes across the globe. Five Flower Lake Set in the striking karst landscape of the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan province, China, Five Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres. Five Flower is one of a series of blue-, green-and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. In winter, Five Flower never freezes; in summer, it never dries up. Local wildlife living in the surrounding mountain forests include the rare giant panda and the golden snub-nose monkey. Crater Lake The deep-blue waters of Crater Lake in Oregon, US, fill the outlet of an ancient volcano that collapsed 7,700 years ago. Its strangest occupant is the “Old Man of the Lake”, a nine-metre-tall tree stump(树桩), which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake. Water loss in summer is compensated by winter snow and rain, the entire body of water being replaced every 250 years. Lake Ohrid Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and crosses the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the Ohrid “plashica”, a fish native to the lake, whose scales(鳞片) are used to make Ohrid pearls. Lake Maggiore Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake. Considered part of the country’s lake district, it is shared with Switzerland. Characterized by a Mediterranean-style climate, temperatures here are mild all year. This has given rise to some of northern Italy’s most wonderful gardens, which appear to float like flower-decked boats on the water. 1. What makes Five Flower Lake different from other lakes? A. Its agreeable climate. B. The rare local wildlife. C. Its color-changing waters. D. The visibility of waters. 2. How does Crater Lake mainly get water supply? A. By artificial rain. B. By snow and rain. C. From nearby streams. D. From an ancient tree. 3. Which lake has a typical warm climate? A. Five Flower Lake. B. Crater Lake. C. Lake Ohrid. D. Lake Maggiore. 1. C 2. B 3. For the Malagasy people, rice is an important part of their diet: many families eat it three times a day, and most of it is homegrown. In Madagascar, however, people earn less than $1.90 per day on average, and the Malagasy population is severely affected by food shortages. Domestic (国内的) production of rice, for example, still does not meet the needs of the island, and the country has to rely heavily on imported rice to help ensure the nation has enough food. Madagascar has set itself the goal of being rice self-sufficient. To work towards this, an FAO South-South Cooperation project began between China and Madagascar. Chinese experts on rice production came to Madagascar to provide training to farmers on how to grow and harvest a greater-yielding (更高产的) type of rice. The new kind of rice seeds is better suited to the Malagasy subtropical climate, which consists of a hot and rainy season between November and the end of March and a cooler dry season from May to October. This Weichu rice variety has been especially developed to fit the climatic and soil conditions of Madagascar. Across three areas of the island, 124 rice farmers took part in the project, working together with a Chinese expert team, to benefit from both theoretical and field training on rice production. To date, the harvest has yielded about 8.45 tonnes on average per hectare (公顷) compared to the 2.8 tonnes per hectare that was harvested before the project. Alain Randrianarivelo, who has farmed rice for more than 20 years, says,“I think this new variety of rice is the future of our agriculture. The yield obtained is breathtaking.”All the other participating farmers think so, too. For Madagascar as a country, this new variety will allow it to be self-sufficient by considerably reducing the level of rice imports. 8. What did the Chinese experts mainly do in Madagascar? A. They made efforts to improve the land. B. They developed new rice seeds in poor soil. C. They introduced ways to earn a good living. D. They taught locals how to grow a new kind of rice. 9. Why is the Weichu rice variety used in Madagascar? A. It meets the high demands of the Malagasy people. B. It suits the varying conditions there. C. It is the best rice variety worldwide. D. It can be grown twice a year there. 10. What can be inferred about the 124 rice farmers in the project? A. They are far-sighted. B. They are pioneers in farming. C. They find the yield fairly satisfying. D. They doubt the advanced farming technique. 11. What would be the best title for the text? A. Doing experiments in Madagascar B. Increasing types of Madagascan rice C. Bringing Madagascar into the future D. Helping Madagascar become rice self-sufficient 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第二段“To work towards this, an FAO South-South Cooperation project began between China and Madagascar. Chinese experts on rice production came to Madagascar to provide training to farmers on how to grow and harvest a greater-yielding (更高产的) type of rice.(为此,粮农组织在中国和马达加斯加之间启动了一个南南合作项目。中国水稻生产专家来到马达加斯加,为农民提供如何种植和收获高产水稻的培训)”可知,中国专家在马达加斯加主要他们教当地人如何种植一种新的水稻。故选D。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“This Weichu rice variety has been especially developed to fit the climatic and soil conditions of Madagascar.(这种威楚水稻品种是专门为适应马达加斯加的气候和土壤条件而开发的)”可知,在马达加斯加使用威楚水稻品种因为它适合那里不同的条件。 根据倒数第二段“Alain Randrianarivelo, who has farmed rice for more than 20 years, says,“I think this new variety of rice is the future of our agriculture. The yield obtained is breathtaking.” All the other participating farmers think so, too.( Alain Randrianarivelo种植水稻已有20多年,他说:“我认为这种新型水稻是我们农业的未来。 D Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) has become quite severe across the United States. But what exactly is cyber-bullying? It’s when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses (侵扰), humiliates (羞辱), mistreats, makes fun of, or threatens another person online or while using cell phones or other electronic devices. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 59% of U. S. teens have experienced at least one of six identified types of abusive online behaviors. Those behaviors include name-calling (42%), having false rumors spread about them on the internet (32%), receiving explicit images that they didn’t ask for (25%), or being the target of physical threats (16%). The peers of some teens have even posted humiliating web pages or videos, or created embarrassing images on social media platforms. Others have taken unauthorized (未授权的) photos or videos in a bedroom, bathroom, or another location considered private, and posted them online for the world to view, rate, share, and discuss. There are many reasons to monitor your son or daughter’s online behavior and pay close attention to the warning signs. Among the most worrisome, students who experienced bullying or cyberbullying are significantly more likely to attempt to take their own life. “If your child suddenly has no interest in their electronic devices, appears jumpy or nervous while using their phone, or appears angry, frustrated, or depressed after going online or gaming, then they may be experiencing cyberbullying,” says Sameer Hinduja, Ph. D., co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and professor of Criminology at Florida Atlantic University. Also, if your child avoids conversations about what they’re doing online, becomes unusually secretive when it comes to their phone or electronic devices, or makes excuses to stay home from school, they may be the target of online bullying. 12. What is the purpose of citing the numbers in the second paragraph? A. To show the emphasis from the society. B. To display how cyberbullying works on children. C. To show the severeness of cyberbullying on children. D. To show how researchers conduct their survey. 13. Which of the following doesn’t belong to cyberbullying? A. Name-calling teens on the Internet. B. Spreading false rumors of teens online. C. Posting pictures online for the world to view. D. Posting humiliating web pages or videos of teens. 14. What can we conclude from Sameer Hinduja’s words? A. Students will lose interest in their electronic after surfing online. B. Students will get angry easily after they surf on the Internet. C. Parents must closely monitor their teenagers’ online behavior. D. There are signs whether teenagers are experiencing cyberbullying. 15. Who is the article most probably targeting at? A. Parents. B. Teenagers. C. Teachers. D. Experts. C 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第一段“According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 59% of U. S. teens have experienced at least one of six identified types of abusive online behaviors. Those behaviors include name-calling (42%), having false rumors spread about them on the internet (32%), receiving explicit images that they didn’t ask for (25%), or being the target of physical threats (16%). (皮尤研究中心最近的一项调查显示,59%的美国青少年至少经历过六种网络虐待行为中的一种。这些行为包括辱骂(42%)、在互联网上散布关于他们的虚假谣言(32%)、收到他们没有要求的露骨图片(25%)或成为人身威胁的目标(16%)。)”可知,第二段内容以具体数据来说明网络暴力的严重性。故选C。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“It’s when someone repeatedly and intentionally harasses (侵扰), humiliates (羞辱), mistreats, makes fun of, or threatens another person online or while using cell phones or other electronic devices. (这是指有人在网上或使用手机或其他电子设备时反复故意骚扰、羞辱、虐待、取笑或威胁他人。)”和第三段“The peers of some teens have even posted humiliating web pages or videos, or created embarrassing images on social media platforms. Others have taken unauthorized (未授权的) photos or videos in a bedroom, bathroom, or another location considered private, and posted them online for the world to view, rate, share, and discuss. 根据最后一段“If your child suddenly has no interest in their electronic devices, appears jumpy or nervous while using their phone, or appears angry, frustrated, or depressed after going online or gaming, then they may be experiencing cyberbullying, (如果你的孩子突然对他们的电子设备不感兴趣,在使用手机时显得神经质或紧张,或者在上网或玩游戏后显得愤怒或沮丧,那么他们可能正在经历网络欺凌)”可知,青少年被网暴有迹可循。 根据第四段“There are many reasons to monitor your son or daughter’s online behavior (监控儿子或女儿的网络行为有很多原因)”和最后一段“If your child suddenly has no interest in their electronic devices, appears jumpy or nervous while using their phone, or appears angry, frustrated, or depressed after going online or gaming, then they may be experiencing cyberbullying, (如果你的孩子突然对他们的电子设备不感兴趣,在使用手机时显得神经质或紧张,或者在上网或玩游戏后显得愤怒或沮丧,那么他们可能正在经历网络欺凌)”可以推断,本文的读者为父母。故选A。 From Mozart to pop music, tons of people enjoy listening to different types of music while they paint, write or draw. Many believe that music helps improve creativity. But an international study by a group of psychologists is challenging that viewpoint. ____16____ To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal (文字的) problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room. ____17____ They found that background music significantly hurt the participants’ ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity. The tasks were simple word games. ____18____ Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music: music with unfamiliar lines, instrumental music, or music with familiar lines. Dr. Melatchie and his colleagues conclude that music interferes with (干扰) the verbal working memory of the brain. ____19____ However, some may argue that the library background noises have seemingly no effect. The researchers explain that is because library noises create an environment of steady state that doesn’t interrupt concentration. “____20____ Instead, they demonstrate that music, regardless of the presence of its content, consistently interrupts creative performance in insight problem solving,” the study reads. A. And this in turn holds back creativity. B. It has something to do with the positive reaction. C. They say that their findings indicate music actually blocks creativity. D. Then again, they were tested while music was played in the background. E. Before the experiment, the participants didn’t study the music they would listen. F. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. G. To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music builds up creativity. 16. C 17. D 18. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring(赞助)a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a beautiful and precious gift for her.” said the advertisement. “This is perfect!” thought Tom. He ran to his room with the newspaper. After taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write. “My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want her to. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters(怪兽). And she gives me the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who may laugh at me for hugging my mom.” Tom liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a special gift,” he thought. Tom checked his mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Tom still hadn’t heard anything about the contest. “What am I going to do now?” he wondered. Five Flower is one of a series of blue-, green-and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. Its strangest occupant is the “Old Man of the Lake”, a nine-metre-tall tree stump(树桩), which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake. Helping Madagascar become rice self-sufficient D Cyberbullying (网络霸凌) has become quite severe across the United States. C To show the severeness of cyberbullying on children. A. Parents. B. When I was 19, I was in a really bad car accident. Mother’s Day was coming, but he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought. Tom picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a gift. And he still didn’t have money. He had to think of something.
