His shining green body caught my eyes as it slowly crawled against the dark brown trunk of the only tree inside the fence line. I moved closer to him and was amazed by the peacefulness of his presence. I had never seen a caterpillar (毛毛虫) quite like him. He was a giant, compared to any close or distant relative of his. The touch of his skin made me think of the rubber. My heart brimmed with affection for this unique being. Its presence brought joy to me, a child without parents around, lonely. I gently held him in my hand and transported him to my room. I fashioned a home for him from scraps of plastic canvas (网布). It was decorated with grass, twigs, and leaves. I eagerly introduced him to a friend, Nancy. She was equally delighted by him. We created dialogues in which we explored what he must have thought of us. We invented stories about where he had come from and where he was going. We imagined what kind of butterfly he would become. As days passed, my joy turned. I hadn’t seen him eat, and he moved less and less. I had begun to realize that I had imprisoned him. Causing further harm to him was not an option since he had done nothing wrong. I felt a deep sadness in my heart as I decided to release him. I placed him back in the exact location where I had found him. I hoped he would continue his life without any scars from the plastic prison I put him in. 4. What a o we know about the caterpillar? A. He is small in size. B. The color of him is bright. C. His skin feels warm. D. He moves quickly on the tree. 5. What did the author and her friend do with the caterpillar? A. They made up stories about him. B. They raised him into a butterfly. C. They built a nice home for him together. D. They talked to him as if he were a person. 6. Why did the author’s joy turn? A. Because the author got tired of the caterpillar. B. Because the caterpillar ate less and less. C. Because the author was harmed by the caterpillar. D. Because the caterpillar was in poor condition. 7. What lesson can we learn from the passage? A. Contentment brings happiness. B. Actions speak louder than words. C. Happiness is not by chance, but by choice. D. Don’t build your happiness on the pain of others. C Millennials (千禧一代) who conduct “forward-looking financial strategies” tend to be happier and more satisfied with their lives. Following a budget saving money and shopping less have benefits “beyond the bound of personal finance”, according to a new study out of the University of Arizona. For the study, researchers collected data from 968 young adults born between the years 1981 and 1996, starting when they were freshmen in college (ages 18-21). They followed up with the same students when they were seniors, and then two years later (ages 23-26). The study participants answered questions about materialism, their own personal finance strategies such as budgeting and any pro-environmental habits they followed. Students were also surveyed about their mental health, including how satisfied they were with their lives and how they’d rank their personal well-being. “People who save money report better overall wellbeing. including less psychological pain ”Sabrina Helm, study author tells CNBC Make It. “And people who buy less and consume less show less depressive symptoms, so there’s a positive mental health effect.” Not surprisingly, the money-saving strategies improved people’s financial satisfaction too. “It gives you peace of mind. ”Dr. Helm says. “If you’re able to put something aside for worse days, and manage to live within your means, it has clear positive effects on mental health.” Certain sustainability efforts also have a similar impact on people’s health and happiness. For example, researchers found that the students who consumed less to help the environment were happier than those who simply bought more “green” products. Although many people have been socialized to see products as solutions, simply reducing the number of things you use or buy might be the better tactic for your mental health, Dr. Helm explains. “It’s normal to geta product to cope with all sorts of things,” Dr. Helm says, “but that contributes to climate change.” Luckily, there are concrete tips to “step back from the consumerist approach”, she adds. For example, she suggests keeping a weekly purchase diary and creating a shopping list. 8. How was the study conducted? A. By making a comparison between finance strategies. B. By keeping track of participants to collect their data. C. By conducting a detailed survey about mental health. D. By asking and answering questions about materialism. 9. Which one of the following statements will Sabrina Helm agree with? A. Consuming less cures people of depressive symptoms. B. Mentally healthier people buy more and consume less. C. Saving money prevents people from psychological disorder. D. One’s financial strategies relatively affect overall well-being. 10. What does the underlined word “tactic” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Influence. B. Attitude. C. Strategy. D. Consumption. 11 Which is the best title for the text? A. How Can You Keep Mentally Healthy B. Saving Money Improves Financial Satisfaction C. Millennials Who Buy Less and Save More Are Happier D. Consumers’ Shopping Habits Contribute to Climate Change D Whenever I order food for delivery, I play a little game to guess how many sets of tableware (餐具) the restaurant will provide with my meal. Sometimes restaurants will throw in two, three or four sets for just one order. But I rarely need any tableware at all, and the waste goes into the trash or collects dust in a kitchen drawer. Researchers working with Chinese technology group Alibaba tried a simple approach to this problem. Instead of just wastefully giving out tableware, the company required food-delivery customers in some cities in China to pick how many sets of tableware they wanted to receive. The default (默认设置) was set at zero. The result, published today in the journal Science, was a 638% increase in the share of no-tableware orders. If applied across China, researchers found, the approach would save nearly 22 billion sets of plastic tableware. The study doesn’t cover carbon emissions, but it’s safe to say that the impact would be significant. It struck me as a useful reminder of the many low-hanging fruits across the economy that can cut waste, and emissions. Nudging its customers cost Alibaba nothing more than a few hours of software engineering time and the impact it brought was enormous. The concept of nudging comes from the field of behavioral economics known as nudge theory. It suggests that a slight action can encourage good human behavior without the need for policies that limit choice or economic punishment. To nudge customers to eat better, for example, a restaurant might organize its menu by listing healthy options first and bury unhealthy ones at the bottom. More recently, some big companies like Google have also begun to use nudges to advance climate goals. Nudging theory isn’t without controversy. Some might think it gives consumers responsibility for addressing environmental challenges. But there is another way to look at it. In the absence of necessary policy—and policy is needed — companies can help encourage a widespread change of consumer behavior. And all of that behavioral change can add up. The International Energy Agency found in2021 that small behavioral changes in energy consumption such as walking instead of driving and adjusting the thermostat (恒温器) could in total reduce 4% of global emissions. The more companies can do to support such changes, the better. 12. What did Alibaba do with tableware waste? A. It stopped restaurants from handing out tableware. B. It recycled unused tableware from customers. C. It updated the food-delivery device regularly. D. It allowed picking tableware at customers’ demand. 13. What do the underlined words “low-hanging fruits” mean in paragraph 2? A. Easily accessible things. B. Fast increasing orders. C. Extremely tough choices. D. Widely accepted strategies. 14. What can we learn about nudge theory from paragraph 3? A. It brings about economic loss. B. It results from consumption policies. C. It indicates small action changes behaviour. D. It implies bad behaviour impacts economy. 15. What is the main idea of the text? A. Nudge theory affects behaviors. B. Good behaviors boost economy. C. Nudging helps build a greener world. D. Behavioral economics benefits customers. As a high school student, you’re likely used to learning through reading textbooks. ____16____ This lies at the heart of “experiential appreciation,” (体验式欣赏) a philosophy that encourages you to engage directly with the world around you. But hardly before I finished, he shouted, “No!” “But why?” I replied. “If you are worried about money, it will be OK since I have got a scholarship…” But he refused to give in. At the moment, I didn’t know what to say. For more than two years, I had been working very hard to pass all the necessary examinations. I had not told my father because I wanted to give him a pleasant surprise. I thought he would be very proud of me because it was many of my classmates’ parents’ dream to send their children to study abroad. “Why do I have to get your permission? I am already 18 and I’m not a kid anymore.” I said angrily and rushed to my bedroom, shutting the door violently. Blinded by anger, I found that I could not stay at my hometown any longer. Late that night, I slipped out of the house and decided to take the bus to the railway station to start my own life as far away from my home as possible. The bus stop was just two blocks away from my home. When I got there, I found that I forgot to take any money with me and missed the last bus. I did not want to go back home, so I sat down on the bench and closed my eyes to have a break. Suddenly, I was woken up by my phone. I looked around and found the road was deserted and the street was so quiet that I regretted that I had left home in such a hurry. 4. B 5. A 6. D 7. Following a budget, saving money and shopping less have benefits “beyond the bound of personal finance”, according to a new study out of the University of Arizona. “People who save money report better overall wellbeing. including less psychological pain, ”Sabrina Helm, study author tells CNBC Make It. C By conducting a detailed survey about mental health. 11. Which is the best title for the text? A. How Can You Keep Mentally Healthy B. Saving Money Improves Financial Satisfaction C. Millennials Who Buy Less and Save More Are Happier D. Consumers’ Shopping Habits Contribute to Climate Change 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. They followed up with the same students when they were seniors, and then two years later (ages 23-26). The study participants answered questions about materialism, their own personal finance strategies such as budgeting and any pro-environmental habits they followed. Students were also surveyed about their mental health, including how satisfied they were with their lives and how they’d rank their personal well-being.(在这项研究中,研究人员收集了出生于1981年至1996年之间的968名年轻人的数据,从他们大一新生(18-21岁)开始。 根据第三段“‘People who save money report better overall wellbeing. including less psychological pain, ’Sabrina Helm, study author tells CNBC Make It. ‘And people who buy less and consume less show less depressive symptoms, so there’s a positive mental health effect. 根据倒数第二段“Although many people have been socialized to see products as solutions, simply reducing the number of things you use or buy might be the better tactic for your mental health, Dr. Helm explains.(赫尔姆博士解释说,尽管许多人已经被社会化,将产品视为解决方案,但简单地减少使用或购买物品的数量可能是对心理健康更好的tactic。)”其中“solutions (解决方法)”和“reducing the number of things you use or buy (减少使用或购买物品的数量)”可知,“tactic”应为“方法,策略”之意,故选C。 4. 由文章第一段“Millennials (千禧一代)who conduct ‘forward-looking financial strategies’ tend to be happier and more satisfied with their lives. Following a budget, saving money and shopping less have benefits “beyond the bound of personal finance”, according to a new study out of the University of Arizona.(采用“前瞻性财务策略”的千禧一代往往更快乐,对生活更满意。 所以“Millennials Who Buy Less and Save More Are Happier(少买多存的千禧一代更快乐)”是文章最佳标题,故选C。 D Whenever I order food for delivery, I play a little game to guess how many sets of tableware (餐具) the restaurant will provide with my meal. 12. D 13. A 14. C 15. I picked up the phone and answered the phone even without checking the number. “Have you had a good sleep? It’s going to rain. Shall we go home now?” It was my father’s voice! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grabbed my bag and hurried to ward him. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】It was my father’s voice! I rubbed my sleepy eyes and looked around. There, about one hundred meters from the stop stood my father in the shadows. Then I realized that my father had been standing there all the time. Perhaps, he knew it would be useless to argue with his stubborn little girl. What he could do was waiting for my anger to die away. At first, I wanted to ignore him, but his voice sounded so assuring in the frightening quietness of night! I grabbed my bag and hurried toward him. On the way home, my father explained apologetically that he was caught off guard by the news and that he was very worried about my safety if I would go so far away alone. “Now I have realized that you have grown up and it is time for you to chase your dream. I will give my permission as long as you promise to live on campus and will not slip away when you are angry in the US,” my father said with resignation. 词汇激活 行为类 ①环顾四周:look around/look about ②抓住:seize/catch/grab ③等待:wait for/await 情绪类 ①令人害怕的;frightening/scrary/dreadful ②担心的:be worried about/be concerned about ③生气的:angry/annoyed/mad 【点睛】[【高分句型1】There, about one hundred meters from the stop stood my father in the shadows.
