Edward walked slowly past the school field where his elder brother, Leon, was playing basketball. Edward didn’t ask if he could join, because the last time he played, Leon’s friends couldn’t stand his poor skills and didn’t want him to play again.
“Sorry, man,” Leon tried to be kind. “Everyone has a talent for something,” he told Edward. “Basketball just isn’t your thing, like math isn’t mine.” Edward was always good at math and could solve many difficult problems.
A few days later, Leon’s math teacher told him he was going to fail the class if he could not get a good grade in the next test. Leon wished that he had his brother’s math skills, so he asked Edward for help.
Looking down at his book, Edward said, “I really hope to get better at basketball. I’ll help you with math, and maybe we can practice basketball together, too.”
Leon knew how hopeless Edward was at basketball. But then again, he felt the same way about math.
“Let’s give it a shot,” Leon said.
The boys agreed that over the next two weeks, they would do math for an hour each day after school and then play basketball for another hour.
A few days later, Leon got his test back. “We did it!” he shouted as he ran into the house after school. “I got an A. I’m going to pass this class. And it’s all because of you,” he said, giving his brother a hug.
The next day, they went to the basketball court. Leon asked his friends to let Edward play on his team. This time, the brothers won!
“That was a pretty good basketball game for a math whiz (高手),” said Leon as he and Edward headed home.
“Just like your math grade, right?” Edward said, still excited from their victory (胜利). “It was a pretty good grade for a basketball star.”
26. Why didn’t Edward ask to join in the basketball game?
A. He was going to have a math class. B. He was not interested in basketball.
C. He was not good at basketball. D. He had to meet his friends.
27. How did Leon feel about his math at first?
A. Angry. B. Interested. C. Confident. D. Hopeless.
28. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. We should focus on what we like.
B. It’s important to be good at many things.
C. Don’t hold on to things that we’re not good at.
D. Working together can help everyone to improve.

Why Can’t I Get This Song Out of My Head?
“I Remember Everything is my favorite song. It’s soft and touching. But I have had it stuck (停留) in my head for two weeks and it’s making me crazy. Why is this happening?” asked a 7th grade student.
You’re not alone! This is a common thing called an “earworm” and it can happen to people all the time.
Scientists are trying to find out why earworms happen. One thing they know is that songs that get stuck in our heads are usually ones we’ve listened to not long ago. But it can also happen if you hear a word or a sound that reminds you of a song.
Some songs are more likely to get stuck in our heads. For example, songs with a fast beat seem to stick more easily. The more we hear a song, the more likely it is to become an earworm.
“Yet songs usually only tend to cause earworms when you’re doing certain kinds of activities,” Dr. Hyman said. In one of his studies, researchers had participants (参与者) listen to a well-known song. The next day, the researchers asked them under what situation the song went back into their heads.
The results showed that songs were most likely to appear as earworms when the tasks caused a wandering mind. “Such activities can include walking, showering or doing dishes.” Dr. Hyman said. But more difficult tasks, like hard schoolwork, can also cause a wandering mind. The reason could be that we have more space in our brain for earworms when we aren’t totally focused on the task at hand.
Now, you might be wondering how to get rid of an earworm. One thing you can try is chewing gum (口香糖). Maybe it’s because chewing gum uses up the same parts of the brain that play the earworm. Another idea is to change your state of mind. Talking to someone you don’t know very well might help you forget the earworm.
The next time you have a song stuck in your head, remember that it’s a common thing. And keep exploring and find which way works best for you!
Remember, earworms are a part of life, and they show that our brains are remembering things. It’s all part of the fascinating way our minds work.
29. Why does the writer use the example of the 7th grade student in Paragraph 1?
A. To share a beautiful song.
B. To introduce the idea of earworms.
C. To prove earworms happen to everyone.
D. To describe a problem of junior students.
30. Dr. Hyman’s research in Paragraph 5 is to ________.
A. look into how popular songs lead to earworms
B. explain why certain songs cause earworms easily
C. come up with useful ways to get rid of earworms
D. find out when earworms are more likely to happen
31. What does the word “wandering” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. less focused B. more forgetful C. clearer D. more creative
32. What can we learn from the passage about earworms?
A. Earworms only happen when we have nothing to do.
B. Talking to friends can help us forget the earworm.
C. Even just a sound of a song can lead to earworms.
D. Slow and soft songs are more likely to cause earworms.
D
It is natural to compare ourselves with others and to end up in a mental (内心的) comparison circle. However, this is never beneficial (有益的). You may have heard the words, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” To me, this is true. I find it is quite difficult to compare myself with others and feel joy at the same time.
Comparison not only takes away our joy, but also leads to self-criticism (自我批评) and a lack (缺乏) of self-acceptance (自我接纳). Usually, comparison makes us think that others are better than us in some way. As a result, we may feel inferior (自卑的). “I am not as successful or attractive as they are. Why don’t I have what they have?” We use comparison as a way to self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me? I must be a loser.” This slows down self-acceptance.
Comparison is deceptive (误导人的). It seems to tell us that if we meet the expectations (期待) such as losing weight or getting a great score, we will feel better, confident and stop comparing ourselves. However, this may be true only for a short time. In fact, a comparison is based on our inner thoughts and sense of self (自我感知), not surroundings (周围环境). Soon we will find something else to compare, another expectation we are not meeting, leaving us feeling worse once again. A student might celebrate being chosen for the school play, but then compare the importance of their role to that of the lead actor, resulting in new feelings of inferiority (自卑) and getting stuck into another circle of comparison.
To stop comparing ourselves with others, we should know that comparison is a losing game and then step away from it. Comparison should not be the reason we decide to change. Instead, we try to change because of our own values (价值). Think about your values and match your behaviors and decisions with your values. This does not mean we ignore (忽视) things that we may want to change. It means these changes and goals are based on values not comparison with others.
Behaviors and decisions are a matter of personal choice, not a way to keep up with others. Self-acceptance isn’t about fixing anything about yourself, it is about accepting who you are today.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The results of comparison. B. The joy of self-acceptance.
C. The necessity of self-criticism. D. The reasons for comparison.
34. The writer suggests that comparison is deceptive because ________.
A. it is always based on our surroundings
B. it only offers us short-term happiness
C. it always comes from false information
D. it prevents us from making personal choices
35. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. we should focus our own values and self-acceptance
B. we can improve ourselves by setting up higher goals
C. we shouldn’t pay attention to things we need to change
D. we will stop comparison as long as we achieve our goals
36. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Why it’s Beneficial to Compare B. Turn from Values to Comparison
C. How Self-acceptance Works D. Say Goodbye to Comparison

Indian-origin Anvitha Vijay has given a new meaning to the phrase “age is just a number”. She has shown that achievements and knowledge come from passion, not just age and experience.
Anvitha Vijay lives with her parents in Melbourne, Australia. At the age of seven, she realized that her piggy bank (存钱罐) did not have enough money to find a developer to help make her an app. So, she decided to teach herself how to code (编程). She watched many coding lessons on the web for an entire year and became a programmer herself through her hard work.
Vijay’s idea for developing the apps came from her little sister, who was still learning to talk. So, she developed an educational app for children of her sister’s age. The app is called Smartkins. It uses about 100 sounds and flashcards of different animals to help children learn and identify (识别). Later, Vijay developed a similar iOS app for children to identify and learn colors. Each app has been downloaded thousands of times.
Anvitha’s skills won her a scholarship (奖学金) to attend a big tech conference by Apple in San Francisco, California. There, she got tips from some professors. She went to workshops where she learned about the latest software for app building. From then on, she showed stronger love for learning new technology.
All that training led to an idea for a third app. The third app, called GoalsHi, is designed to help kids to practice good habits. Users get prizes for achieving goals, such as eating their vegetables or practicing the piano. Anvitha says the prizes are like getting a sticker for a job well done.
Anvitha’s goal is to continue creating technology that helps kids learn while having fun. But what is even more important to her is that the world sees the power of technology in kids’ hands. “The more training we get in tech at an early age,” she says, “the better chance we have of becoming creators who will one day change the world.”

____50____ If the air you’re breathing is clean—which it would be if you’re away from the smog (雾霾) of cities—then the air is filled with fresh oxygen (氧气). If you exercise outdoors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles and your brain.

十二、阅读理解。(共12分,68-71题,每小题2分,72题4分)
The 2024 Paris Olympic Games ended on August 11, showcasing the amazing talents of China’s young athletes across various sports. While they embodied the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together”, there has been a shift (转换) in perspectives (观点) on winning as a recognition of the true essence of the Olympic spirit.
Since the beginning of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, many exciting and unforgettable moments have been shared by athletes and audiences worldwide. We have cheered for victories and comforted those who fell short. But beyond the winning and losing, there is something more to admire.
On August 4, 21-year-old Zheng Qinwen made history for Chinese tennis by winning the first gold medal in women’s singles for both China and Asia. Just the following day, the young Chinese swimming team ended the US’s decades long unbeaten period in the men’s 4×100m relay, finishing in 3 minutes and 27.46 seconds. By winning gold medals in events once dominated by Western athletes, these young competitors have shown a remarkable improvement in China’s competitive sports landscape.
Equally inspiring is the positive attitude of these young athletes. They are confident and open-minded, striving for excellence and breakthrough performances. Moreover, they have moved away from the “gold medal only” mentality, embracing a more composed and rational (理性的) approach to sports. From 18-year-old BMX freestyle cyclist Deng Yawen to 26-year-old swimmer Zhang Yufei, many young athletes have attracted global audiences with their self-assured approach to competition. They genuinely enjoy competing. When Zhang, China’s “butterfly queen”, missed out on a gold medal, she said, “I hope this time I can have a relaxed attitude and really enjoy the Olympics.”
This shift (转换) in mindset (思维模式) and demeanor has moved the public focus away from just winning gold medals to appreciating the respect and glory that athletes and the Olympics truly deserve. Success is the goal, but they remain equally graceful in the face of failure, embodying the deep integration of Chinese values with the Olympic spirit. It’s not just about being faster, higher, stronger, but also about embracing sports with a positive attitude.
53. What does the underlined phrase “fell short” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Fell apart. B. Made outstanding advances.
C. Achieved success. D. Failed to meet expectations.
54. The 2024 Paris Olympic Games is inspiring, except that ________.
A. young athletes made determination to just win gold medals
B. young competitors displayed positive and confident mindset
C. young competitors improved a lot in China’s competitive sports
D. young athletes attracted global audience with confident approach
55. Why does the author mention Zhang Yufei in Paragraph 4?
A. To emphasize the importance of the Paris Olympic Games.
B. To praise athletes’relaxed mindset in Paris Olympic Games.
C. To prove athletes’good performance in Paris Olympic Games.
D. To show Zhang’s regret for losing a gold medal in Paris Olympic Games.
56. How has the perspective on winning among China’s young athletes changed according to the passage?
A. They have adopted a more relaxed approach to competition.
B. They believe that winning is the only measure of success.
C. They focus solely on breaking records in their sports.
D. They now prioritize winning over personal growth.
57. According to the passage, share your understanding of “the spirit of sports is not just about winning competitions.” How do you think this mindset can affect you as a student?

D. find out when earworms are more likely to happen
31. What does the word “wandering” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. less focused B. more forgetful C. clearer D. more creative

B. Talking to friends can help us forget the earworm.

Is Fresh Air Really Good for You?
We all grew up hearing moms tell us to “go out and get some fresh air”. ____49____ According to recent studies, the answer is a big YES, if the air quality in your living area is good.
Recently, people have begun studying the relation between the natural world and healing (治疗). ____51____ In these places patients can go to be near nature. It shows that just looking at green, growing things can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and put people into a better mood. Greenery is good for us. Hospital patients who see trees outside are likely to heal at a faster rate than patients who see buildings or sky instead. Being in nature refreshes us. It gives us a great feeling of peace.
____52____ While the sunshine can age and harm our skin, it also gives us Vitamin D. To make sure you get enough Vitamin D—but still protect your skin—put on sunscreen (防晒霜) right as you head outside. It takes sunscreen about fifteen minutes to start working, and that’s plenty of time for your skin to take in Vitamin D for the day.
A. Fresh air cleans our lungs (肺部).
B. Just as importantly, we tend to relate air with health care.
C. Another benefit of getting fresh air is sunlight.
D. But is fresh air really as good for you as your mother always said?
E. All across the country, healing centers have begun building Healing Gardens.

【49题详解】

【50题详解】
根据“the air is filled with fresh oxygen (氧气). If you exercise outdoors, your body will learn to breathe more deeply, allowing even more oxygen to get to your muscles and your brain.”可知当空气是新鲜的时候,就会有更多氧气进入人的身体,这也解释了新鲜空气可以清洁肺部的原因,选项A“新鲜空气可以清洁肺部。”符合语境,故选A。
【51题详解】
根据“Recently, people have begun studying the relation between the natural world and healing (治疗)...In these places patients can go to be near nature.”

A. They have adopted a more relaxed approach to competition.
B. They believe that winning is the only measure of success.
C. They focus solely on breaking records in their sports.
D. They now prioritize winning over personal growth.
