If someone said they'd pay you $1,80 to stay of social media(社交媒体) for 6 years, would you do it? Could you? An American mom challenged her son to do just that, and he succeeded.

Sivert Klefsaas is the youngest of Lorna Gold-strand Klefsaas' four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. It was intluencung their feelings, as well as their friendships. So, Lorna thought, “If I could, I'd be wiling to do whatever to keep Sivert off social media as long as I could, whatever that looks like.” And that's where the idea for this challenge came from.

It all started when Lora heard about a similar “16 for 16 challenge” on the radio, where a mother called Amanda Green gave her daughter Teresa $1,60 when she turned 16 if she stayed of social media. So, Lorna decided to create her own “18 for 18 challenge”. Not only did Sivert finally complete this challenge, but he would do it again, too.

“It wasn't too difficult to live without social media, and I didn't think about it much during the 6 years,” Sivert said. “As time went on, it was more of a pride thing.”

He had his friends keep him up to date on the latest information. Sivert added, “I got to avoid all the unnecessary things that were on there. It also meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead.”

Now that he's done with the challenge, Sivert joined Instagram(照片墙), but has no plans to let social media define (定义)him.

“Social media is great. We certainly need to use it,” Sivert said. “But also make sure you spend time in other areas of your life, especially those personal relationships.”

Still, Lorna is proud of her son's success. “We are certainly not against social media, but it's the healthy using of it.” Lerna told CNN.

Isaiah Tuckett has a love for baking, and before he entered high school, he even made a business out of it. When the 14-year-old started selling cupcakes, he set a big dream for himself--and he recently found sweet success. “He's always loved being in the kitchen and baking, ever since he was a little kid,” his mom said “It was my mom's 85th birthday and we were having a party for her, and we decided to bake a few cupcakes.”

Isaiah hopes to sell enough cupcakes to buy himself a car. Isaiah also hopes to go to cooking school when he finishes school, and then open a restaurant in his neighborhood. He's already halfway there.

About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Water in nature is salt water and fresh water, but only three percent of that amount(数量) is freshwater. A lot of organizations are saying that people are running out of usable water, but few are taking this problem seriously.

Why should they? They see water everywhere. The average American family uses more than 1,140 liters(升) of water at home per day. However, in developing countries, nearly 900 million people do not have safe drinking water. Water shortages are, in fact, a bigger problem today than ever before. The human population has continued to grow and with it, its need for water. Global warming is making this problem more serious. Unless we all take it seriously, we will end up having to live on a blue planet without a drop of usable water.

From taking shorter showers to reusing water, there are many ways for you to save water. One more thing you can do is reduce your use of “virtual water”. Perhaps you have never heard of the idea of “virtual water.” It means the water you use indirectly. We not just drink water and use it to clean all kinds of things; we also“use” it through the products we buy. To produce a piece of A4 paper, for example, we need about ten liters of water. The production of our food requires even more water. A cow needs to eat 10 kilograms of grain(谷物) for three years before it can produce 180 kilograms of beef. The grain requires water to grow, the cow needs to drink, and the farmer needs water to clean his farm. So behind each 230-gram steak dinner, there are nearly3,600 liters of water!

It will make a big difference if you remove some meat from your diet and eat more fruit and vegetables instead. You are also saving water when you are writing on both sides of paper instead of just one. The world is running out of usable water. Every drop of it is valuable.
