How do people name their children?Different countries have different ways to name their children.Let's take a look at a few.
In Spain,a child usually has two given names and two surnames. The first surname is the same as the father's first surname, and the second is the mother's first surname. The given names may be the same as a grandparent's.
In Nigeria, children's names are chosen by family elders. The children's parents wait for names from the grandparents and other important family members. These names describe the day of the baby's birth. The baby's name is announced at a party on the eighth day after the child's birth.
In Turkey, babies are often named according to the time of their birth. For example,if a child was born in spring, the chosen name might be Bahar. It means spring.A baby born during bad weather might be named Tufan. It means storm.

Fraser Doherty was only 14 when he started making jam (果酱).There had always been a special way of making jam in the Doherty family. One day his grandmother told Fraser the secret and, with her help, he began to invent his own unusual jam, all called Superjam.
The jam was good because soon Fraser was making it and selling it to his friends and neighbors after school.Within four years he produced 1,000 tins of jam a week from his parents' home in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2007, when he was just 17, he won an order to produce 120,000 tins of jam a week for a big British supermarket. That meant that he needed to start producing jam in a factory, not at home.
When Fraser was 18, he studied business at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. He hoped that his business would grow and if it did, he could sell jam to other supermarkets.Things went really well.At the age of 24 he was already a millionaire (百万富翁).Today he sells jam to over 2,000 supermarkets around the world, from Australia to Russia!
Traditional jam contains often 80 percent sugar, but Mr Doherty, whose company is called Superjam, has created a healthy choice. He uses only fruit and fruit juice, not sugar. He wanted to make jam as healthy as possible, and take the place of the traditionally unhealthy jam with a “superjam”.“It was quite surprising to change a product that people have made the same way for hundreds of years, but I wanted to add a new way.” A food researcher said, “Fraser has taken an old product and he has made it young, exciting and modern.”

Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3-D digital libraries.Across 163 different countries, 1,000 natural and cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO calls World Heritage Sites.
We lose a little of that heritage every day.War, climate change and pollution have a bad effect, as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever. Now there's a better choice.New digital-conservation technologies let us hold on to them, at least virtually, through 3-D scanning, modeling and digital storage.Such projects can be accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industry and non-profit organizations.
To make a 3-D model, a laser scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping (重叠的) images from all possible angles.A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines from one point to another to create a wire-frame model.High-resolution digital cameras add color and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.
These scans do more than preserve a memory in a database. With highly accurate measurements, archaeologists can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering tricks.School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see.And when a site is destroyed, the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened for one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda.Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3-D models made in 2009.More than 100 World Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3-D models, and conservationists are racing to record as many more as possible.
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了利用三维数字技术可以更好地保护世界历史文化遗产。

Over the past 5,000 years, China has given birth to a large number of cultural heritages.Among these are the beautiful porcelain wares (瓷器) produced in Jingdezhen in East China's Jiangxi Province. Here we explore their development and importance in today's society.
Jingdezhen is well-known around the world for its porcelain. It has produced porcelain since the Five Dynasties (907-960).Jingdezhen is known as the “porcelain capital” for its different kinds of porcelain wares with rich and cool styles.Of all the products, blue and white porcelain is the most famous.Such unique porcelains with the fine style have been praised as “the Treasure of China”.
Starting in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), kiln (窑) appeared in every household in every village in Jingdezhen, which was key to the establishment of its porcelain tradition.
During the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), a new technique for blue and white porcelain was invented.During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) Dynasties, techniques for mining, painting, and firing were advanced, bringing Jingdezhen's porcelain craftsmanship (工艺) to a historic high.At that time, the establishment of the Zhushan Imperial Kiln and the growing porcelain market overseas accelerated the development of the industry, turning Jingdezhen into a major porcelain production center.
The Republic of China (1912-1949) saw the growth of porcelain industry as well as a rise in shops and traders, which helped increase ties between Jingdezhen and other areas in China and other countries. After the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the porcelain industry saw its development at high speed.
However, with the economic growth and the use of new technology over the last decades, the traditional porcelain production worsens.Although some traditional techniques have been preserved, a large part of them were lost.In 2006, Jingdezhen porcelain craftsmanship was listed as a national cultural heritage.

One afternoon, when Hannah was on one of her adventurous searches, she came upon an abandoned cottage(遗弃的小屋).The cottage looked very old in its condition. The door was hardly hanging and the wood was about to break apart into pieces.Even though Hannah's mother had strictly warned her not to go wandering in abandoned places, her curiosity drove her to approach it.
