Then a crash sounded, a rare 3,500-year-old jar was broken on the ground, and her son who accidentally broke the jar, stood over it, in panic. “Please let that not be my child” was the first thought that raced through Geller’s head. Geller was embarrassed and tried desperately to calm down her son. Ariel told Mom he was exceptionally curious and just wanted to see what was inside. The Bronze Age jar, exhibited out in the open without glass barriers, has been on display for 35 years. It was one of the only containers of its size. It was likely used to hold wine or oil. What could be considered every parent’s worst nightmare became a learning experience. The curator (馆长) hoped to turn the disaster into a teachable moment. Friday, the Geller family were invited back for making up. Ariel gifted the museum a DIY vase of his own and felt welcome to return. Experts were using 3D technology and videos to repair the jar. “That’s what’s actually interesting for my kid, this process of how they’re piecing it back together, and all the technology they’re using there,” Geller said. Shafir, a restoration expert of the museum, said the repairs would be fairly straightforward, as the pieces were from a single, complete jar. It could be back on display as soon as next week. The artifacts should remain accessible to the public, even if accidents happen because touching an artifact can inspire a deeper interest in history and archaeology (考古学). “I like that people touch. Don’t break, but to touch things, it’s important,” he said. 4. What can we learn about Ariel from the first two paragraphs? A. He was a naughty boy. B. He broke the jar intentionally. C. He was frightened of the accident. D. He became a laughing stock of the crowd. 5. What did the Geller family do when they were invited back? A. They had to make an apology. B. They learned to restore the broken jar. C. They provided the videos for repair. D. They were asked to pay for the damage. 6. What can be concluded about the restoration according to Shafir? A. It was simple and plain. B. It took at least two weeks. C. It was costly and boring. D. It lacked funds and support. 7. What is a suitable title for the text? A. When curiosity meets criticism. B. Take good care of family members. C. A disaster? A teachable moment! D. To touch or not to touch? Think twice! C 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第一段“Then a crash sounded, a rare 3,500-year-old jar was broken on the ground, and her son who accidentally broke the jar, stood over it, in panic.(然后一声撞击声响起,一个有着3500年历史的稀有罐子摔碎在地上,她的儿子不小心打碎了罐子,惊慌地站在旁边)”可知,小男孩不是故意打碎罐子,他站在那里,感到害怕。 根据第四段“Friday, the Geller family were invited back for making up. (周五,阿里尔一家被邀请回来修补罐子)”可知,阿里尔一家被邀请返回博物馆是学习如何修复破碎的罐子。故选B。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Shafir, a restoration expert of the museum, said the repairs would be fairly straightforward, as the pieces were from a single, complete jar. It could be back on display as soon as next week.(博物馆的修复专家沙菲尔说,修复工作相当简单,因为这些碎片来自一个完整的罐子。它最早可能于下周重新展出)”可知,修复过程是简单的。故选A。 根据第四段“What could be considered every parent’s worst nightmare became a learning experience. The curator (馆长) hoped to turn the disaster into a teachable moment.(这可能被认为是每个父母最糟糕的噩梦,却成了一次学习经历。馆长希望把这场灾难变成一个教育的时刻)”结合文章讲述了一个四岁男孩打碎了一个古老的罐子,馆长把这场灾难转变成了一个适于教学的机会,邀请这一家人重返博物馆,学习如何修复破碎的罐子。故C选项“灾难?一个受教育的时刻!”最符合文章标题。故选C。 C Ash has built his life around adventures. He has covered 9,000 kilometres on foot through many countries. So when the birth of his daughter put a stop to his cross-continent explorations, Ash found it quite difficult to adjust. “It’s become part of my identity,” he says. “I’ve had to think about what I can do instead.” This, he says, has led him to reflect on why we travel in the first place, and what we can do to make our travel pleasant. In his new book, Why We Travel, Ash shares his travel insights, drawing on his own travel experiences and expert advice. Figure out what you want to experience from your trip. “What makes travel most satisfying for me,” he writes, “has been figuring out how to make my intentions align with what I’m doing.” He explains you might want to experience something new. “But what does that mean?” he asks. “Do you want to eat new foods or engage in another culture? Do you want space to relax or do you want something that is physically or psychologically challenging?” Asking yourself such questions can help you to decide your destination, how you travel, where you stay and what you do once you’re there. For Ash, who has mostly traveled alone, he’s discovered that traveling with others can present some unexpected opportunities. Yes, traveling alone is important – it allows self-discovery and independence. But traveling with partners and friends can be a great opportunity to learn more about yourself. Challenge each other to do something the others would never choose to do when you’re on, holiday. It’s a different kind of psychological development. And you might discover something you like, that you would have never tried on your own. So next time if you want to enjoy your travel to the full, read this book before start. 8. What made Ash end his cross-continent explorations? A. His desire for reflection. B. The expert’s advice. C. His devotion to writing. D. The arrival of his daughter. 9. What does the underlined word “align” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Negotiate. B. React. C. Agree. D. Fight. 10. What’s the benefit of traveling with friends according to the text? A. Relieving loneliness. B. Gaining psychological growth. C. Saving loads of money. D. Developing independence. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To recommend a book. B. To share travel experiences. C. To honor close partners. D. To introduce a travel destination. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段“So when the birth of his daughter put a stop to his cross-continent explorations, Ash found it quite difficult to adjust.(所以,当女儿的出生让他的跨大陆探险停止时,阿什发现自己很难适应)”可知,女儿的出生使Ash停止了跨大陆探险。 根据划线词上文“What makes travel most satisfying for me(让旅行对我来说最令人满意的是……)”以及“has been figuring out how to make my intentions(弄清楚如何让我的意图)”和后文“with what I’m doing(和我正在做的事情)”可知,对作者来说,旅行最令人满意的是弄清楚如何让他的意图与他正在做的事情相一致,吻合。 根据文章第四段“But traveling with partners and friends can be a great opportunity to learn more about yourself. Challenge each other to do something the others would never choose to do when you’re on holiday. It’s a different kind of psychological development.”(但与伙伴和朋友一起旅行可以是一个更好地了解自己的机会。 根据第二段“In his new book, Why We Travel, Ash shares his travel insights, drawing on his own travel experiences and expert advice.(在他的新书《我们为什么旅行》中,阿什根据自己的旅行经历和专家建议,分享了他的旅行见解)”及最后一段“So next time if you want to enjoy your travel to the full, read this book before start.(所以,下次如果你想充分享受你的旅行,在开始之前阅读这本书)”可知,文章的写作目的是推荐一本书。故选A。 D When ultraviolet (紫外线的) light shines onto the Mexican free-tailed bat’s extraordinarily hairy toes, they light up like a Christmas tree. That’s because the animals have hairy structures that can absorb UV light and send it out at a different wavelength. The finding marks the first time glow (发光) structures have been reported in live bats. Biologist Gual-Suárez and his team had been catching Mexican free-tailed bats outside of a well-known habitat in southern Mexico City. And the night before, the researchers had used nets to capture bats about 20 kilometers to the north, then dusted them with a special powder (粉末) that shines under UV light. The hope was to later detect that powder on bats sampled in the south, proving that the animals were moving between the two locations. “We failed at that,” says Gual-Suárez. However, while searching for signs of the powder with their UV flashlights, the team discovered something even cooler on the powderless bats-glow-in-the-dark toes. The researchers looked for and found similarly bright structures on 25 live Mexican free-tailed bats at both sites. The team also tested museum samples. These lacked glow structures in the foot, but glowed all over in dull green-probably as a result of chemicals used in the preservation process. “I applaud Gual-Suárez’s paper on both examining live animals, and comparing the museum samples,” says Linda Reinhold, a zoologist in Australia. “That’s good science.” As to what purpose the glow toes serve, the function is difficult to prove in any animals that glow. But the researchers note that because this species migrates thousands of kilometers at night, and lives in communities of up to millions of individuals; it would make sense if the light-up toes served some sort of role in nighttime communication. “We need to test it in the lab,” says Rodrigo Medellin, an ecologist in Mexico. “This is just the tip of a very deep and very long iceberg that nobody knows anything about.” 12. What was Gual-Suárez and his team aimed at originally? A. Protecting bats from being caught. B. Comparing live bats with museum samples. C. Tracking bats’ movements between two sites. D. Helping bats live in harmony within communities. 13. What can be learned about the glow toes according to the text? A. They can block UV light. B. They are found by chance. C. They are familiar to humans. D. Their functions are easy to prove. 14. What’s Linda Reinhold’s attitude towards Gual-Suárez’s paper? A. Favorable. B. Cautious. C. Suspicious. D. Negative. 15. What does Rodrigo Medellin imply in the last paragraph? A. Take action to save the iceberg. B. Make use of new lab equipment. C People know nothing about bats. D. Further research needs conducting. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段中“The hope was to later detect that powder on bats sampled in the south, proving that the animals were moving between the two locations.(希望之后能在南部采样的蝙蝠身上检测到这种粉末,以此证明这些动物在这两个地点之间移动)”可知,Gual-Suárez和他的团队原本的目的是追踪蝙蝠在两个地点之间的移动。 根据第三段中“However, while searching for signs of the powder with their UV flashlights, the team discovered something even cooler on the powderless bats-glow-in-the-dark toes.(然而,在用紫外线手电筒寻找粉末痕迹的过程中,团队在没有涂抹粉末的蝙蝠身上发现了更酷的事情——它们的脚趾会发光)”可知,发光的脚趾是在偶然的情况下被发现的。 根据第五段中Linda Reinhold的话““I applaud Gual-Suárez’s paper on both examining live animals, and comparing the museum samples,” says Linda Reinhold, a zoologist in Australia. “That’s good science.”(“我赞扬Gual-Suárez的论文,既考察了活体动物,又对比了博物馆的样本,”澳大利亚的动物学家Linda Reinhold说,“这是很好的科学。”)”可知,Linda Reinhold对Gual-Suárez的论文持赞成态度。故选A。 根据最后一段中Rodrigo Medellin的话““We need to test it in the lab,” says Rodrigo Medellin, an ecologist in Mexico. “This is just the tip of a very deep and very long iceberg that nobody knows anything about.”(“我们需要在实验室进行测试,”墨西哥的生态学家Rodrigo Medellin说,“这只是冰山一角,而这座冰山又深又长,人们对它几乎一无所知。”)” Even though human beings 5,000 years ago had significantly larger brains than we do today, it doesn’t mean they were smarter than us. This is because brain power has nothing to do with the actual size of your brain. What is interesting though is that although the brain only makes up about 2% of total body weight, it uses up to 20% of the body’s energy. ____16____ It needs maintaining and training in order to keep itself sharp. Eat healthy food. You may be surprised to know that the diet you keep can dramatically change how sharp and functional your brain is. ____17____ Things like fruits and vegetables are also very beneficial for keeping you energized. ____18____ When you sleep, your body removes all the poisons that have built up during the day, and it also regenerates cells (细胞). Studies show that the best time to sleep is between 9 pm and midnight. Get at least 7-8 hours good quality, undisturbed rest. Don’t rely on technology. Relying heavily on smartphones and computers is bad news for your brain. This is because your brain becomes lazy if you reach for an easy, quick answer all the time. ____19____ This can keep your brain productive all the day. Write it down. ____20____ It has been proven that setting down little notes and reminders helps to increase your brain power. Writing notes creates oxygenated (供氧的) blood flow to these areas. Writing a journal or blog can increase your brain ability to memorize important events or tasks. A. Get plenty of sleep. B. Good memory depends on your writing. C. The training tips will make you sharper. D. The protein in eggs is thought to be good. E. Use your God-given inner machine, your brain. F. In other words, the brain is a real energy consumer. G. Certain parts of the brain are responsible for memories. F 17. D 18. A 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“What is interesting though is that although the brain only makes up about 2% of total body weight, it uses up to 20% of the body’s energy.(有趣的是,虽然大脑只占体重的2%,但它却消耗了身体20%的能量)”可知,上文提到大脑占据身体重量的2%,使用了身体能量的20%。 【17题详解】 根据上文“You may be surprised to know that the diet you keep can dramatically change how sharp and functional your brain is.(你可能会惊讶地发现,你的饮食习惯可以极大地改变你的大脑的敏锐程度和功能)”以及后文“Things like fruits and vegetables are also very beneficial for keeping you energized.(水果和蔬菜等食物也对保持精力充沛非常有益)”可知,本句与后文并列,主要说明有益的食物,D选项中good对应后文also very beneficial。 【18题详解】 根据本段内容“When you sleep, your body removes all the poisons that have built up during the day, and it also regenerates cells (细胞). Studies show that the best time to sleep is between 9 pm and midnight. Get at least 7-8 hours good quality, undisturbed rest.(当你睡觉的时候,你的身体会清除白天积累的所有毒素,它也会再生细胞。研究表明,最佳睡眠时间是晚上9点到午夜之间。保证至少7-8小时的高质量、不受干扰的休息)”可知,本段的建议是充足的睡眠。故A选项“充足的睡眠”符合语境,故选A。 【19题详解】 根据上文“Relying heavily on smartphones and computers is bad news for your brain. This is because your brain becomes lazy if you reach for an easy, quick answer all the time.(过度依赖智能手机和电脑对你的大脑来说是个坏消息。这是因为如果你总是寻求一个简单、快速的答案,你的大脑就会变得懒惰)”可知,上文提到过多依赖电子产品会让大脑变得懒惰,可知本句是在建议要多使用大脑。故E选项“使用上帝赋予你的内在机器——你的大脑”符合语境,故选E。 【20题详解】 根据标题“Write it down.(记下来)”以及后文“It has been proven that setting down little notes and reminders helps to increase your brain power. Writing notes creates oxygenated (供氧的) blood flow to these areas. Writing a journal or blog can increase your brain ability to memorize important events or tasks.(已经证明,做小笔记和提醒有助于提高你的脑力。写笔记可以使含氧血液流向这些区域。写日记或博客可以提高大脑记忆重要事件或任务的能力)”可知,本段主要说明了大脑负责记忆的作用,G选项中memories对应后文memorize。故G选项“大脑的某些部分负责记忆”符合语境,故选G。 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 John, a coach of the Kirkby Boxing Club for six decades, was on his way to a business meeting on August 1 when he collapsed (晕倒) in driving. ____21____ the frightening experience, John said, “My eyes rolled backwards and my lips went blue. A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the house was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. Grandma was waiting for them joyfully in front of the house. Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then rushed to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!” Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was getting worse and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. . Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently. The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. We had a lot of happy moments with Grandpa here! But now Grandpa couldn’t stand up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “No, he hates people catch birds!” Jack shook his head. Excitedly, the brothers rushed back to the house with the fabulous cane. Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. Grandma and Mum were surprised and pleased by their thoughtfulness. With the cane, he was able to lift himself up out of the chair, and take a shaky step or two. The smile on his face was all the reward the boys needed. The gratitude in his eyes was evident, and the brothers felt proud of what they had done. “Thank you, my boys,” Grandpa said, patting them on the back. “This cane is a gift I'll always cherish.” And with that, they all headed back into the little blue house full of love and happiness. 词汇激活 行为类 ①寻找:search/seek ②.阻止:stop/hinder/hold back ③.起身:lift up/rise up 情绪类 ①.激动地:excitedly/with great excitement ②.感激:gratitude/appreciation 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B. C Ash has built his life around adventures. Do you want space to relax or do you want something that is physically or psychologically challenging?” Asking yourself such questions can help you to decide your destination, how you travel, where you stay and what you do once you’re there. D When ultraviolet (紫外线的) light shines onto the Mexican free-tailed bat’s extraordinarily hairy toes, they light up like a Christmas tree. “We failed at that” says Gual-Suárez. C. People know nothing about bats. D. Further research needs conducting. Even though human beings 5,000 years ago had significantly larger brains than we do today, it doesn’t mean they were smarter than us. G. A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the house was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. Grandma was waiting for them joyfully in front of the house.
