Last year,I had the chance to study at a British secondary school as an exchange student.I stayed with a lovely host family and went to school with their son,Daniel. We were both in year ten and we got on well.He is learning Chinese and will come to stay with me this year in China!
The British school day commonly① begins around 9 a.m.and ends around 4 p.m.Every secondary school student in the UK must study English,Maths and the Science subjects:Biology,Chemistry and Physics. In year ten, students usually have to learn nine subjects and they can also choose to study other subjects, such as History,Art and Business.
The classes are different from those in China. Each teacher has their own classroom and the students move around for every lesson. In most of my classes, there were only about 20 students. In the beginning, however,it was still tough② for me to remember everyone's name!
I enjoyed most of the classes, but some of them were quite challenging③.Technology classes were fun.I made a clock to take home. The teacher helped me put the parts together.I like it so much that I still use it as my alarm! I found Maths quite easy and enjoyable④ because the material was less advanced in the UK than in China. However, learning in English was a great challenge for me.There were a lot of difficult English words, especially in Geography and Biology.Class discussion is very important in the UK,but I could not make a great contribution⑤ because sometimes I wasn't able to express myself clearly in English.Although there was not as much homework as I was used to,it was still challenging.Fortunately,my teachers and classmates were always helpful and gave me lots of encouragement⑥.My language skills improved over time.

It was September 1966,and I was twenty years old, facing my first-class of kids as a new teacher. My class in downtown Toronto was made up of thirty-eight angels, and one street kid named Mike. His parents passed away when he was a baby, and he lived with a weak and indifferent grandmother. As for a ten-year-old boy,he was little and rough.
Like most new, young teachers,I was full of enthusiasm and determined to make a difference.Being so young,I knew very little about parenting. However,I did recognize a child in need, and decided to see if I could make a difference. And so my special “foster father (养父)” relationship with Mike began.
Each day as I arrived at school,I'd take Mike out for breakfast. Each noon hour as I shared my lunch with him,I taught him some new skills—for a while we worked on the proper method of using a microscope. On another day we constructed a camera, then we classified rocks.Mike would then “help” me teach these skills to the rest of the class. We had a lot of fun,and a kind of unspoken trust began to build up between us.
Early in our special relationship,Mike told me of his dream—becoming a lawyer.I believed then, and after thirty-four years of teaching I still believe, that all children have a gift.Everyone has the same opportunity to be the best person they can be.I realized this boy was brilliant, and that with a little love, attention, understanding, guidance and encouragement,he could probably accomplish whatever he put his mind to.I figured if he wanted to be a lawyer,I would do all I could to help him become the very best lawyer he could be.
Every Saturday morning,I took Mike to the Osgoode Law Library, which was attached to the University of Toronto.I explained to him that reading up on law was the only way to be a good lawyer. His young mind was eager and interested.

Like most new, young teachers,I was full of enthusiasm and determined to make a difference.
Each noon hour as I shared my lunch with him,I taught him some new skills—for a while we worked on the proper method of using a microscope.
I believed then, and after thirty-four years of teaching I still believe, that all children have a gift.
I figured if he wanted to be a lawyer,I would do all I could to help him become the very best lawyer he could be.
主题
In the growth process of a student, the help and affirmation from teachers is crucial.
This was how we spent each Saturday morning for two years.
One day, after we were out of touch for 30 years, there went my doorbell.

Confucius and Confucianism
Confucius (551BCE—479BCE),whose given name is Qiu,courtesy name Zhongni,is a native of Zouyi in the State of Lu (in the southeast of today's Qufu in Shandong Province),living in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was a remarkable thinker and educator in ancient China. As a great educator,Confucius made no social distinctions in teaching. He advocated that everyone is equal before education.Confucius championed the principle of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude. He endeavored his life to teaching. He taught more than 3,000 students in his life, about 72 of whom were most outstanding and ten were considered philosophers. He was called by later generations“the Perfect Saint and the Primordial Teacher”“the Manifest Teacher of Ten Thousand Generations” and the like.Confucius' own teachings are preserved in the Confucian Analects that were compiled by his disciples.
The philosophy of Confucius, also known as Confucianism, developed from what was later called the Hundred Schools of Thought and inherited the theology and values from the Xia,Shang and Zhou Dynasties. It has been the main stream of Chinese ideology, politics and culture.“Benevolence” is the core concept and the height of ethical codes.
“Ritual, righteousness, loyalty, forgiveness, filial piety, love, and the Doctrine of the Mean” are the code of conduct and norm of morality of Chinese people of all time. The core concepts of his political philosophy are benevolence (ren) and ritual (li).He argues that the best government is one that rules through rites and people's natural morality.

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future.I was in the classroom, but I wasn't there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read,I wanted to hide.I was 13 years old,but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher,Mr.Creech, who knew I couldn't read.In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up.I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time,it made me realize that I needed to change the situation.I was determined it wouldn't happen again.Later that day,Mr.Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on,I never gave up practicing reading.
Then when I was 41 years old,one day,I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport,I saw Mr.Creech buying himself a drink.I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him.“Do I know you?” he asked.“Yes,sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly.“My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he'd once encouraged.
“I'm so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said.“And Mr.Creech,I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn't all.I had become a published author and an active speaker.“The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine,an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills.Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents' income, education and the amount of parent talk,Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not,on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes.”Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time.Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.

Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork—everything from taking tests to researching a paper. But unfortunately, most schools don't have classes that teach you how to take notes. So here are some tips.
Write down key facts. If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that's good:You can copy them down.If not, write down the most important points from class.Does your history teacher mention the date of a key Civil War battle? Does your English teacher give examples of Shakespeare's use of irony(讽刺)? Write them down!
Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may mention lots of dates and facts in class but only write the key ones on the board.Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat a certain date or a piece of information. After a while, you'll get to know a teacher's style.
Don't overdo it.Don't go crazy taking notes. You'll be frantic(慌乱的) if you try to write down every word that's said in class. And if you focus too much on getting your notes right, you might miss important points. Some people actually learn better by listening, writing down a few key points, and then going over the material after class.
Ask.Don't be afraid to ask the teacher to repeat something you miss.If the teacher is going too fast, your classmates will also be happy to hear the information again. If you don't want to ask in class, see your teacher afterwards. It's much easier than wondering if you got the notes right as you study.
Compare.Keep your notes handy when you're doing your reading homework.Compare what you wrote with what the reading says—you may even want to add to your notes as you read.

D.To explain what a key fact is in a teacher's class.
根据第二段中“If you have a teacher who writes notes on the board, that's good:You can copy them down.If not, write down the most important points from class.”
34.What is suggested in the third paragraph?
A.Teachers encourage their students to be active in class.
B.It's helpful for teachers to learn from each other in styles.
C.It's not always possible to note down all information in class.
D.A teacher's style should be taken into consideration when taking notes.

35.What's the writer's opinion according to the passage?
A.Students must try to take correct and detailed notes in class.
B.Students should put down only key points while listening carefully.
C.Students must not interrupt the teacher by asking questions in class.
D.Students should put down as much information as possible in class.
根据第四段最后两句“And if you focus too much on...going over the material after class.”

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him.“We will have an English spelling test today,Mum,” Peter said.“Mr.White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last,it was time for the students to have a test.“Responsibility,”Mr.White started.Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word:contribution,” Mr.White said.“So easy.” Peter thought happily. He quickly wrote the word down.Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr.White.After marking the test papers,Mr.White said,“Three of you win a prize today for excellent test scores.Peter,David and Mary get 100 on the spelling test!”
Mr.White praised them.Meanwhile,he gave the three students each a dictionary.Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best.Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered.
After Mr.White gave the test paper back,Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him.It didn't seem right.Peter began to compare it with the one on the word list.It turned out that he had spelled it wrong.
Staring at the red sign “100” which was written on his test paper,Peter was lost in thought. After a while,he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him,“We ought to be an honest person.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Peter didn't expect that his teacher would praise him for being honest. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Peter raised his hand slowly and nervously.“Mr.White,I didn't get 100 in the test.I missed a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper.“I spelled contribution with ‘si’ instead of ‘ti’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk.Mr.White held up Peter's test paper.“Class,” he said,“Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly in a test.” Mr.White smiled at Peter.“He taught us all a lesson on being honest.”
Peter didn't expect that his teacher would praise him for being honest. He looked around, finding that many of his classmates were smiling at him.“Peter,I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr.White said.Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to him with a big smile. He also really learnt the importance of honesty. He couldn't wait to tell Mum one of his best days ever.
