1. Have students discuss the topic of idioms by filling in the following table.
out of the blue: Suddenly, unexpectedly
a piece of cake: An easy job
see eye to eye: To have the same opinion as someone else
2. Have students read the magazine article and fill in the following chart.
Introduction: (1)There are lots of sports idioms that have found their way into everyday language.
Main body:
Football: (2) move the goalposts; score an own goal
Baseball: (3) in the ballpark; a ballpark estimate; throw someone a curveball; three strikes
and you are out
Boxing: (4) below the belt; throw in the towel
3. Have students read the first paragraph and answer the following question.
What are the definition and function of idioms?
Idioms are groups of words with meanings different from the meanings of the individual
words. The function of idioms is to make language more colourful and expressive.
4. Have students read the paragraphs about football idioms and fill in the following table.

Meanings in football: changing the location of the goalposts
Meanings in everyday life: unfairly changing the rules or requirements for something
Examples: A company makes the annual sales target of an employee higher just when he is
about to reach it.
2) score an own goal: 进乌龙球
Meanings in football: accidentally kicking or heading the ball into one’s own net
Meanings in everyday life: making a bad mistake which unintentionally harms one’s own
interests
Examples: The local council makes a decision which backfires terribly.
5. Have students read the paragraphs about baseball idioms and fill in the following table.

Meanings in baseball: The ball is somewhere in the ballpark during a baseball game.
Meanings in everyday life: rough estimates

Meanings in baseball: Throwing a ball that suddenly turns in the air
Meanings in everyday life: presenting someone things that are unexpected and difficult to
respond to

Meanings in baseball: A batter is out after making three unsuccessful attempts to hit the ball.
Meanings in everyday life: failing after wasting three chances
6. Have students read the paragraphs about boxing idioms and fill in the following table.
1)below the belt: 不公正的、伤人的
Meanings in boxing: hitting the opponent below the waist
Meanings in everyday life: a behaviour that is unfair and harmful
Examples: Someone makes an unfair and cruel remark.
