In the U. S. , your options are seemingly endless. Here are some local markets for you to visit. Yoli Tortilleria (Kansas City, Missouri) Why it’s great: Yoli is the go-to spot for fresh tortillas (thin Mexican pancakes) in Kansas City — they’ve even won a James Bear d award. Head to their retail location, where you can also pick up delicious goods like egg and bacon burritos, along with their tortillas and salsas. What to buy: The tortillas are a must, but I’ve also heard marvelous things about the Taco Stand salsa. Cross Street Market (Baltimore, Maryland) Why it’s great: Baltimore is-home to a handful of the country’s longest-operating markets, of which Cross Street Market is a long-standing favorite. Since the mid-1800s, the market has been serving the local community with fresh, locally-grown produce, freshly caught seafood, baked goods and more. What to buy: The owners and operators are all local Baltimoreans from multiple backgrounds and ethnicities (民族) . Do not leave without a fresh waffle cone, which has been named the best ice cream in Baltimore for four years running. Shields Market (Richmond, Virginia) Why it’s great: When you think about a neighborhood market, Shields is everything that comes to mind. It’s a community-first spot in Richmond serving prepared foods, local products, beer and wine, and a small selection of gifts. You’re likely to find a new favorite drink or treat, usually from a Richmond-based brand. What to buy: The shop’s beer selection is impressive for its size. The curry chickpea salad is my personal favorite for a light lunch or snack. Uptown Farmers Market (Phoenix, Arizona) Why it’s great: Uptown Farmers Market is an amazing little market to walk around. With over 150 vendors, there are lots of local food trucks (as well as locally grown produce) selling fresh tortillas, locally made salsas and pasta. Some chefs will even do demonstrations so you can sample their specialties straight from the pan. What to buy: Definitely get freshly made tortillas, fresh eggs and bread from Noble and Proof Bread. 1. If you want to have a taste of an award-winning pancake, which market is the best choice? A. Cross Street Market. B. Yoli Tortilleria. C. Shields Market. D. Uptown Farmers Market. 2. What is special about Cross Street Market? A. It has several longest-operating markets. B. It serves the local community with many goods. C. It has a long operating history. D. It’s a community-first market. 3. What is the purpose of writing the passage? A. To advertise some local food in the U. S. B. To share traveling experiences in American local markets C. To promote diverse food cultures in the U. S. D. To introduce some local markets in the U. S. B School is much more than a place where students gather to learn. For children, school is their first opportunity for social development and introduction to people outside of their family unit. Lessons learned in school go beyond mathematics and language arts. Students learn to develop individual interests and find other people who share their interests. Music is one of the ways like-minded children come together. When many people talk about the advantages of music education, they are quick to point out all of the measurable results of music-education: many studies show the positive effect music programs can have on children in other areas of study. Dr. Laurel Trainor, a professor of psychology, at McMaster University, has said young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory compared to children who do not receive musical training. Stanford University researchers have found that musical training improves how the brain processes the spoken word, a finding that researchers say could lead to improving the reading ability of children who have dyslexia and other reading problems. Furthermore, in an analysis (分析) of data on more than 25, 000 secondary school students, researchers at the United States Department of Education found that students who report continuous participation in instrumental music during middle-school and high school perform much better in mathematics. There are many reasons why music education can help to make a child a better student. There is also a social effort that can set the course for lifelong friends and help create social groups that last through school and beyond. Mustc education contributes to familiarity (熟悉) during a school career, when going from class to class or from school to school every year can cause children to feel nervous. 4. What is the function of paragraph 1? A. To show school is a place for learning. B. To lead to the main topic of the passage. C. To stress the importance of learning. D. To highlight the significance of music. 5. Which of the following is not the benefit of music education? A. Brain development and improved memory. B. Better performance in mathematics. C. Better interpersonal relationships D. Fewer reading problems. 6. Researchers at the United States Department of Education did their research by _________. A. analyzing reports B. analyzing data C. conducting interviews D. conducting a survey 7. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage? A To indicate few schools really focus on music education. B. To prove music can make sure you have lots of close friends. C. To show music offers social and understanding benefits. D. To suggest changing schools has a bad effect on everyone. C When the German psychologist Kurt Lewin moved to the U. S. , he found his new home a little puzzling, especially when it came to friendships. “Compared with Germans, Americans seem to make quicker progress toward friendly relations early in the acquaintance process and with many more persons,” he wrote. “Yet this development often stops at a certain point and the quickly acquired friends will, after years of close relations, say goodbye as easily as after a few weeks of acquaintance.” Lewin thought that this idea of friends as fast fashion might be encouraged by the high level of residential mobility (居住流动性) in the United States. Gillath and Keefer did - studies where people took questionnaires about their willingness to discard things and their history of moving from place to place. They found that people who’ d moved around a lot were more willing to get rid. of objects, and being willing to get rid of things was connected with being willing to cut social ties. Moving is a big life change, and not only with regard to place. The social circles they have easy access to are also likely to change. This isn't to suggest that people view their friends as objects. “Moving also requires making choices about which relationships are worth keeping and which are not, which ties could be replaced and which ties should be kept,” Gillath and Keefer write. Perhaps this tendency to keep friendships from getting too deep comes from not only an easy-come, easy-go attitude due to mobility, but also the knowledge of how hard it is to leave people. As John Reisman puts it, “Within a changing society, people could, by keeping their friendships at an associative level, protect themselves from the sadness and self-blame that can be brought about when they have to cut close relationships.” 8. According to Kurt Lewin, what is Americans’ attitude towards friendship? A. They are less likely to make friends in a shorter period of time. B. They are harder to say goodbye to friends as the time goes by. C. They consider making more friends as a fashion. D. They are more likely to let go of friends as they move from place to place. 9. What does the underlined word “discard” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Throw away. B. Put away. C. Take over. D. Break down. 10. Gillath and Keefer agree that Americans end friendships easily because _________. A. they are born to be indifferent. B. they tend to view friends as objects. C. they are used to making choices due to mobility. D. they like changing social circles frequently. 11. According to John Resiman, which is not the reason for Americans to cut friendships? A. Residential mobility. B. Self-protection. C. An easy-come, easy-go attitude. D. Self-blame. D Living in a city is a well-known risk factor for developing a mental disorder, while living close to nature is largely beneficial for mental health and the brain. A central brain region, the amygdala (大脑杏仁核) involved in stress processing, has been shown to be less activated (激活) during stress in people living in the countryside, compared to those who live in urban areas, indicating the potential benefits of nature. “But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be solved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban areas, ” says Sonja Sudimac. To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature does bring about beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress. “The results support the previously assumed (假定的, 认为的) positive relationship between nature and brain health, but compared with the other studies, this is the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress, ” explains Simone Kühn, head of the group. The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living environment affects brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, suggesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain. In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress in mothers and their babies. 12. What does the hen-and-egg problem in paragraph 1 refer to? A. Whether living close to nature really makes a difference to brain activity. B. Whether people in cities tend to have a higher risk of mental problems. C. Whether it's necessary to work out the complex issue of stress and mental health. D. How to figure out the impact of living environment on physical health. 13. How did researchers collect evidence for the study? A. By achieving cause-and-effect evidence. B. By interviewing healthy volunteers. C. By comparing volunteers' amygdala activities. D. By researching on a previous theory. 14 What contribution did Simone Kühn and his team mainly make? A. Supporting a commonly held view of urban exposure. B. Confirming the assumption of nature's benefits to brain health. C. Uncovering the link between stress and mental health. D. Recognizing the causes of mental health problems. 15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The focus of the following research. B. Benefits of a regular walk in nature. C. An appeal for living close to nature. D. Nature's positive impacts on women and children. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ten years ago, not many families in the United States would consider homeschooling a serious option for their children. There were negative feelings about homeschooling, especially among school educators, who considered it crazy or irresponsible. But things have changed now. ____16____ As homeschooling becomes more widely practiced, school communities are becoming far more accepting and recognize that it can meet real needs. ____17____ Homeschooling provides community life that is valuable to children. Participating in community life, homeschooled children relate socially with a wide variety of people. ____18____ Without social pressure from age-separated classrooms, kid feel more comfortable forming friendships. ____19____ We often hear parents and kids talk about how relieved they feel from being freed of traditional schooling and nightly homework. With independent learning, they have more time to talk and listen; more time to spend in libraries, museums, and concert halls; or to hike, ride bikes, read, or think. These changes are what happens when family life is driven by the needs of families, rather than the needs of institutions. Homeschooling also creates better learning environments for children who have been wrongly considered as having all sorts of imaginary “learning problems” in public and private schools. The educators want the children to be fixed so that they will fit; the parents correctly sense that their children are fine and only need something different: more space, freedom to move, a safe environment, or respectful treatment from others. ____20____ A. Homeschooling helps children lo broaden their knowledge. B. In homeschooling families, life is likely to be less stressful. C. Some people choose homeschooling for socialization benefits. D. Homeschooling success stories are often reported in the media. E. People can see how easy it is to get along with homeschooled kids. F. For these families, homeschooling helps a child build a life that works. G.
