In 2015, Chennai was destroyed by one of the worst floods in over a century, leaving thousands without food, water and supplies. During the flood, many heroes arose, one of whom was Santosh, a young man who owned a take out restaurant in Chennai.
When the first flood hit in November, he got a call from a company called Naga Rava. The company asked him to prepare 5,000 packets of food and give them to the flood victims. He, with his partners, took the order, cooked for 14 hours and delivered(递送) them. But that night, as they sat together discussing the event of the day, they actually felt ashamed. “Here was a man not even from Chennai and he was going out of his way to help the affected people. We, while living here, had not really done anything ourselves for our own people,” said Santosh later.
He then began the groundwork for a collection to help cook more dishes. Little did he know that the November flood was just the beginning, and the real show was about to begin. The December flood affected them all. His own house got flooded and his family was trapped on the second floor. They lost phone connection and electricity. In spite of this, Santosh went back out into the flood, creating a kitchen and preparing food all by himself for the victims.
He did not sleep for four days, taking a one-hour break every day as he kept on cooking. As word got out about this man’s effort, others stepped out to join him. From children to the elderly, strangers came to help him in cooking, packing and transporting food. Up to 300 volunteers worked together to make it all happen. When I first launched my business about 10 years ago and started working in Mexico, I noticed co-workers and friends greeting each other with a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek. So I started doing that too, as I believed it was the custom, until one day my business partner pulled me aside and said, “Can you stop hugging and kissing the receptionist every time you come into the office? I think it sends the wrong message.”
I didn’t understand the culture well enough to appreciate the unwritten rules. Yet, as CEO of a fast-growing multi-national company, that’s exactly what I needed to learn — and fast. I not only wanted to stop sending the wrong message, but I wanted to start sending the right messages. I wanted to understand how to tap into the diverse aspects of Latino culture while staying true to the culture of my own country and business. Expanding to other geographies only increases the importance of sending the right messages that support a more open and diverse workforce.
“As a CEO, it is important to learn some of the basic phrases in the native languages of your employees — it shows your respect for their culture.”
Every culture has its own set of primary cultural drivers. In the U.S., we tend to be driven by popularity, success and financial reward. Other regions’ drivers can include family pride or community contribution. By learning these drivers and how they impact your relationships, you can build trust truly within your company. For example, in Northern Ireland and Mexico, I learned that family units stay close together and often meet every week for a meal, and co-workers are occasionally invited to these family functions. While this is not a regular practice in the U.S., I found that joining these family meals was crucial for building trust with my colleagues.
Over the years, I have learned to talk openly about these awkward aspects of culture and diversity. They need to be tackled head-on to come to a solution. By doing so, you can build trust and bridge large differences that lead to better productivity, higher levels of innovation, and a more enjoyable company culture that represents every culture that makes up your business. As leaders, it is our job to put these issues on the table and hammer through them sincerely ----- no matter the cultural divide.
28. The author mentions hugging and kissing on the cheek to ________.
A. demonstrate he/ she is integrated in Mexico
B. provide an example of his misunderstanding
C. support he/she is fully aware of the custom
D. compare body language in different cultures
29. What can we learn from the 4th paragraph?
A. People in U.S bank on family functions.
B. People in Mexico focus more on success.
C. Cultural motivations vary with the country.
D. Building trust mainly relies on socializing.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “hammer through” in the last paragraph?
A. deal with B. look forward to C. burn up D. be proud of.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What is cultural diversity?
B. What is proper body language?
C. How to send the right messages?
D. How to build trust in a diverse culture?
D
If there were an app on your phone that could improve your memory, would you try it? Who wouldn't want a better memory? After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging.
Nowadays, there are a large number of apps that provide memory training on our phones. Can they help you remember to take medicine, do better on a school exam, remember the name of the person whom you met yesterday? Some scientists question whether this is possible. Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today overstate the potential benefits of using their apps.
Scientists have provided evidence that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. Will it only be those who have some form of memory impairment(缺陷),or can it also help those eager for self-improvement even though they are already functioning very well?
To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us determine which form of training may be best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of focusing on the simple question of whether brain training works, we are looking to engage the whole population in a new challenge to test for whom brain training works, and under which conditions.
32. What can affect our memory in particular?
A. Getting ill. B. Getting old. C. Being upset. D. Being injured.
33. Which word best describes the scientists' attitude to memory training apps?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
34. Why did the author's team conduct the research?
A. To test whether brain training works.
B. To develop a training that suits all the people.
C. To compete with other memory training organizations.
D. To find the best form of training for different people.
35. Where is the article probably taken from?
A. A fashion magazine. B. A tour guide.
C. A science website. D. A personal blog.
