18 外刊阅读拓展 ▶ “答案与解析”见P4 一、 阅读理解。 聪明的鸽子 It can be difficult to tel how smart animals are—they can􀆳t answer questions. But scientists can give them tests to see what they can do. Pigeons(鸽子) have lots of natural skils. They can read a landscape. They can find their way home from places they􀆳ve never been to. They can understand human faces, and folow hundreds of pigeon friends. But can they count? Many animals can tel more from less, and keep folowing 3 or 4 objects(物体). Pigeons can learn to peck(啄) at groups of objects in counting order (the group with one first, then the group with two, etc.), no matter what the objects are. This shows that they understand the idea of numbers. Pigeons can also learn to peck at a button exactly 8, or 16, or 24 times to get a treat. A pigeon can even remember its place if it gets troubled. Like al birds, pigeons have very sharp eyes. They can see many more colours than humans. They can see a tasty sesame seed(芝 麻粒) on the grassy ground. Pigeons are also good at finding patterns and solving shape puzzles(谜). In games to match shapes, they are faster than humans. In fact, some scientists are studying pigeons􀆳 brains to help teach robots and computers how to see. (素材来源: Ask) 1. What does the underlined word “landscape” mean? A. Sometimes they sit and look at us, or care for their babies. We laugh at how smart they are. 1. And then we go home, where we don􀆳t see monkeys. But in some parts of the world, monkeys live in cities right alongside people. They play near the roads or climb up the trees along the streets. 2. But sometimes, it isn􀆳t happy at al. We may feel bored with them. In New Delhi, India, thousands of smal monkeys live in the city. They take food away from street selers and break into people􀆳s houses and leave a mess(混乱). 3. Climbing monkeys can also cut power lines(输 电线), knocking out electricity(电) and the Internet. Lots of people would just like to stay away from the monkeys. Others believe that they should be kind to them. In some organizations, people feed and care for wild monkeys. 4. Many years ago, New Delhi had forests around it. Monkeys had many places to live there. But more and more people are moving to the city. Every year the city grows and more of the forest is cut down.
