When my son, Justin, was 4, he found a caterpillar(毛毛虫) and put it in a jar. Each day he fed it fresh grass and leaves. In a few weeks, the caterpillar was fat and ready to go to sleep. One morning we found the caterpillar was in a cocoon(茧).
He took me to his room. The cocoon had become clear and we could see wings inside. A few days later, a beautiful black moth(蛾子) broke free from its cocoon and began to lay eggs(产卵) on the grass. Justin was excited. He knew a moth or butterfly was about to be born.
The next day, Justin decided to set the moth free. He took the jar outside, opened it, and the little moth flew out. It circled(盘旋) the yard twice, came back, and landed(降落) on Justin's arm. Justin picked it up, threw it in the air, and it came back. He tried over and over to set it free, but each time it would return to his arm. The red kangaroo
The red kangaroo(袋鼠)is a famous special Australian animal. It moves by jumping on its long hind(后面的)legs. One jump may be 9 meters long and up to 3 meters high. Its heavy, long tail helps it keep balance.
We can find the red kangaroo mainly in the dry grassland of Australia. It usually travels in small groups. Each group has 2-10 kangaroos.
When a red baby kangaroo is born, it is only a few centimetres long. After being born, it crawls(爬行)through the mother's fur(毛皮)to her pouch(育儿袋). In hard times, the mother kangaroo can stop the baby from being born till there is enough grass for her to eat.
The mother feeds the baby with milk from her body. The joey will spend about two hundred and forty days in the pouch.
Kangaroos can live for up to 20 years. A kangaroo never stops growing bigger, so an old kangaroo can be very large. There are probably millions of kangaroos of all types in Australia.

Big meat-eating dinosaurs(恐龙) might change their menus and become vegetarians(素食者), a study of a 130-million-year-old fossil (化石) found in the US showed.
According to a report in the magazine Nature, this dinosaur developed(进化) from a kind of meat-eating dinosaurs. The long-tailed dinosaur ate plants, but it still had the powerful body and the four-inch claws(爪)of its meat-eating ancestor(祖先). The newly-found type of dinosaurs might use the claws to protect themselves.
The dinosaur is an important finding in the history of evolution (进化), because of its change in food. It might live mainly on flowering plants. Scientists (科学家) believe that its special teeth provide important information on its eating habits (习惯). The mouths of meat- eaters had knife-like sharp teeth. This dinosaur's teeth were more like spoons, better for eating plants. It still might eat the snakes, the scientists reported.
The fossil was from a newly-found dinosaur graveyard (墓地). It is about 140 miles south- east of Salt Lake City. Scientists found "hundreds, maybe thousands" of dinosaur fossils were in the middle of a 130-million-year-old stone.
"99% of the bones were from the same species (物种)," Kirkland said. But scientists don't know why so many dinosaurs died suddenly in the same place. Kirkland first saw some of
the fossils in 1999, when other scientists showed him a box of bones they bought at a fossil show. The seller (卖家) didn't want to say where the fossils were from.
Kirkland said he spent several years trying to find the place.
8. What does the sentence "Big meat--eating dinosaurs might change their menus"mean?
A. They didn't like old menus. B. They ate vegetables to lose weight.
C. They changed their eating habits. D. They had no meat to eat.
9. The dinosaurs might use their claws mainly to _____.
A. catch small animals for food B. run faster in the forests
C. eat plants more quickly D. keep themselves from danger
10. We know from Paragraph 3 that the newly-found type of dinosaurs _____.
A. liked to eat meat instead of plants B. ate many plants and little meat
C. liked snakes better than plants D. ate all kinds of food like humans
11. What's the main idea of this passage?
A. The reason why dinosaurs died out. B. A kind of dinosaurs changed their food.
C. New dinosaur fossils were found. D. Different dinosaurs have different teeth.
12. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Scientists are sure when the dinosaur died.
B. Fossils are important ways to study dinosaurs.
C. Kirkland is the first one to find the fossil.
D. Scientists know why dinosaurs died suddenly.
