But as an artist and daughter, my heart seemed to be more in my work as an artist. As for my mother and my family, I thought we would have more time to spend Christmas together. I was going to do my own thing. I made plans for my winter adventure in New Hampshire. The MacDowell Colony (麦道尔艺术村) was everything I could have wished for. About 20 to 30 artists were present, and it was as captivating as I had imagined. Snowy New England, sledding (滑雪橇) and whisky! It felt like my life had become an unexpected independent film. By Christmas Eve, I had been at the colony more than a week. The fresh feelings were wearing off, but I would never admit it. Everyone around me was having too much fun—drinks and deep conversations by the fireplace. It seemed so amazing! What was wrong with me? This was the holiday I’d always dreamed of. No plastic reindeer. Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in sight. People here didn’t even say “Christmas”, but they said “holiday”. Then why was I so down? Finally, I called home. My dad answered. He told me that my mother was out shopping with my brothers. I found there was a fire in my heart. They were having a fine Christmas without me? Didn’t they miss me? How could they? Despite a serious snowstorm, a large package with my mother’s beautiful handwriting showed up near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning. I seized it as if I had been five years old. Inside was my favorite cake. As I sliced (切) the cake, everyone gathered around —young and old. My mother had sent a real homemade gift. It was a minor Christmas miracle that one cake managed to feed so many. We ate it from paper towels with our hands, satisfying a hunger we didn’t know we had and reminding us of our dear families, who must be missing us too. 24. Why was the author unwilling to spend Christmas at home? A. She met some trouble at work. B. She wanted to focus on her career. C. She had disagreements with her mother. D. She was tired of staying at a familiar place. 25. What does the underlined word “captivating” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Attractive. B. Tough. C. Strange. D. Simple. 26. What can we learn about the artist colony from Paragraph 3? A. It attracted many sports lovers. B. It was suitable for holiday parties. C. It lacked the Christmas atmosphere. D. It gave the author some artistic ideas. 27. What did the author mainly intend to express in the last two paragraphs? A. She learned to be open to others. B. She enjoyed bringing kindness to strangers. C. Her mother was good at taking care of her family. D. Her mother’s cake cured the artists of their homesickness. C Climate change, global warming, the greenhouse effect… these days nobody denies that there is something strange and worrying happening to the atmosphere. Scientists are puzzled by the rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. They are also afraid that the world may be a short way from what they consider as uncontrolled global warming. At Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, meteorologists (气象专家) have been carefully monitoring (监测) the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere for the past 50 years. Until recently, there has been a gradual increase of around 1. 5 parts per million(ppm). In 2013 the figure rose to 2. 08 ppm and in the following year they recorded an increase of 2. 54 ppm. Climate analysts feel that it is too soon to draw conclusions about the phenomenon although the public are concerned that the carbon dioxide emissions are getting out of control. Jason Samenow, the chief meteorologist in the American National Weather Service, thinks that people might have only a few years to find a solution to the problem instead of having decades. He believes that the Earth’s natural systems for absorbing the gas are breaking down, resulting in the uncontrolled greenhouse effect. He insists that something could happen if the Earth’s temperatures rose to such a degree that it was unable to contain the heat. However, one interesting aspect of this climate change is that it is not happening in a uniform way around the world. Carbon dioxide levels in the South Pole are obviously lower. This suggests that something has happened in the northern hemisphere (半球) that set off the rise. Forest fires in North America might hold the answer to the puzzle, along with very hot summers in Europe. The 2014 heat wave was certainly out of the ordinary. Statistics claim that more than 30, 000 people lost their lives as a direct result of the high temperatures. Scientists are being cautious in their interpretations. Most feel that it is too soon to say that a new trend has been set. All agree that the phenomenon needs to be closely observed. 28. According to Paragraph 1, what confuses scientists? A. Uncontrolled global warming. B. Something strange and worrying in life. C. The effects of climate change on everybody. D. The increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. 29. From the changing amount of the carbon dioxide in the recent 50 years, we can learn that ________. A. Every year the changes of the carbon dioxide is the same. B. It is too soon to conclude global warming is now out of control. C. Our world may be soon faced with uncontrolled global warming. D. The amount of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing sharply. 30. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. Hot summers in Europe. B. Forest fires in North America. C. Low temperatures in the South Pole. D. North and South differences in climate change. 31. How will scientists deal with the high temperatures? A. By setting a new trend soon. B. By giving a solution directly. C. By observing the phenomenon closely. D. By experiencing high temperatures personally. D “While animals can’t pick out precise numbers, they can understand that more is more. Interestingly, we know now that numerical competence is present on almost every branch of the animal tree of life,” says Andreas Nieder, a neurobiologist from the University of Tuebingen. “Different groups of animals obviously developed this competence independently from others and that strongly indicates that it has to be of adaptive value.” Honeybees for instance, can remember the number of landmarks they pass when searching for food in order to find their way back to the hive. The last common ancestor between honeybees and primates lived about 600 million years ago. But still, they evolved numerical competence that, in many respects, is comparable to vertebrate numerical competence. Also, for example, male frogs sing “advertisement” calls to attract females. The females, listening for the complexity of their calls, choose the male that sings the most calls. Wolves are more likely to hunt successfully if they have the right number of wolves in their pack for the size of their prey: With prey like deer, only around six to eight wolves are needed, while hunting wild ox requires a pack of nine to thirteen. Their prey also uses this concept to protect themselves from predators — deer tend to live in large herds to reduce the chance of any individual becoming prey. So obviously they are assessing the number of individuals in their groups for their everyday life situations. Despite these many examples of numerical competence in animals, this subject has not gotten many first-hand studies. “Many of these behavioral findings in the wild have usually been collected as by-products or accidental findings of other research questions,” says Nieder. He argues that more research needs to be done to fully understand the numerical competence. 32. The phenomenon of animals having their own numerical competence shows that ________. A. all groups of animals can know the exact numbers B. numerical competence must have a survival benefit C. animals’ intelligence varies with different environments D. animals’ numerical competence is determined by their independence 33. What role does numerical competence play in wolves’ hunting? A. It helps them form proper hunting groups. B. It gives them more options to hunt. C. It makes them discover more prey. D. It offers them new skills to hunt. 34. How does the author mainly develop this text? A. By listing figures. B. By asking questions. C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons. 35. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A biology textbook. B. A health magazine. C. A travel brochure. D. A science report. •While people don’t always like the old saying “the early bird gets the worm”, getting up early is actually the secret to the success of many people. ____36____ There are also other benefits of waking up early in the morning. •Improve your cognitive (认知的) function. One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, learning to classrooms, laboratories and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria and a gym. Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist. In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car! When Coach Pitt blew his whistle (哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. “It’s just the beginning,” she thought. “I’ll come in last for sure.” Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile”. Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved (拐弯). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four. When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2024-2025学年第一学期期中考试 盐田高级中学高二英语试题卷 考试时间:120分钟 总分:150分 1. B 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第一段“On the 25th of December, my mother expected her children to be present, exchanging gifts and eating turkey. But as an artist and daughter, my heart seemed to be more in my work as an artist. As for my mother and my family, I thought we would have more time to spend Christmas together. I was going to do my own thing. (12月25日,我母亲期待她的孩子们都在场,交换礼物和吃火鸡。但作为一个艺术家和女儿,我的心似乎更多地在我作为一名艺术家的工作中。至于我的母亲和我的家人,我想我们会有更多的时间一起度过圣诞节。我要做我自己的事情。)”可知,即使是圣诞节这个全家团聚的时候,作者更在意自己的事业。故选B项。 【25题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段的第二句开始“The MacDowell Colony (麦道尔艺术村) was everything I could have wished for. About 20 to 30 artists were present, and it was as captivating as I had imagined. Snowy New England, sledding (滑雪橇) and whisky! It felt like my life had become an unexpected independent film. (麦道尔艺术村是我所希望的一切。大约有20到30位艺术家在场,这和我想象的一样captivating。白雪皑皑的新英格兰,滑雪橇和威士忌!感觉我的生活变成了一部意想不到的独立电影。)”可知,麦道尔艺术村是作者梦寐以求的地方,有很多吸引作者的元素。因此猜测captivating意为“吸引”,与A项Attractive意思相近,故选A项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段第三句开始“Everyone around me was having too much fun—drinks and deep conversations by the fireplace. It seemed so amazing! What was wrong with me? This was the holiday I’d always dreamed of. No plastic reindeer. Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in sight. People here didn’t even say “Christmas”, but they said “holiday”. Then why was I so down? 根据最后第二段“Despite a serious snowstorm, a large package with my mother’s beautiful handwriting showed up near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning. I seized it as if I had been five years old. Inside was my favorite cake. (尽管暴风雪肆虐,圣诞节的早晨,一个写着我母亲美丽笔迹的大包裹出现在艺术家聚居地的我的门口。我抓住了它,就好像我五岁一样。里面是我最喜欢的蛋糕。)”,以及最后一段“As I sliced (切) the cake, everyone gathered around —young and old. My mother had sent a real homemade gift. It was a minor Christmas miracle that one cake managed to feed so many. We ate it from paper towels with our hands, satisfying a hunger we didn’t know we had and reminding us of our dear families, who must be missing us too. (当我切蛋糕时,每个人都围了过来——无论老少。我母亲送来了一份真正的自制礼物。一个蛋糕能喂饱这么多人,真是个小小的圣诞奇迹。我们用手从纸巾上吃它,满足了我们不知道的饥饿感,并提醒我们:亲爱的家人,他们一定也在想念我们。)”可知,一块家里制作的圣诞蛋糕,让这一群艺术家想起了家人,治愈了艺术家们的思乡病。故选D项。 C Climate change, global warming, the greenhouse effect… these days nobody denies that there is something strange and worrying happening to the atmosphere. A Hot summers in Europe. D 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第一段中“Scientists are puzzled by the rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.(科学家们对大气中二氧化碳的增加感到困惑。)” 根据第三段中“Climate analysts feel that it is too soon to draw conclusions about the phenomenon although the public are concerned that the carbon dioxide emissions are getting out of control.(气候分析人士认为,尽管公众担心二氧化碳排放正在失控,但对这一现象下结论还为时过早。)” 根据第四段“However, one interesting aspect of this climate change is that it is not happening in a uniform way around the world. Carbon dioxide levels in the South Pole are obviously lower. This suggests that something has happened in the northern hemisphere(半球) that set off the rise. Forest fires in North America might hold the answer to the puzzle, along with very hot summers in Europe.(然而,这种气候变化的一个有趣的方面是,它并不是以一种统一的方式在世界各地发生的。南极的二氧化碳含量明显较低。这表明,北半球发生了一些事情,引发了海平面上升。北美的森林大火,以及欧洲非常炎热的夏季,可能是这个谜团的答案。)”可知,第四段主要讲了气候变化的南北差异。故选D项。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Most feel that it is too soon to say that a new trend has been set. All agree that the phenomenon needs to be closely observed.(大多数人认为,现在说一种新趋势已经形成还为时过早。所有人都认为这一现象需要密切观察。)”可知,科学家们将通过仔细观察应对高温现象。故选C项。 D “While animals can’t pick out precise numbers, they can understand that more is more. Interestingly, we know now that numerical competence is present on almost every branch of the animal tree of life,” says Andreas Nieder, a neurobiologist from the University of Tuebingen. “Different groups of animals obviously developed this competence independently from others and that strongly indicates that it has to be of adaptive value.” Honeybees, for instance, can remember the number of landmarks they pass when searching for food in order to find their way back to the hive. 32. B 33. A 34. C 35. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 When Coach Pitt said “Nice work!” to her at the finish line, Eva was surprised. Never in her wildest dream had she imagined that she could achieve such an eye-catching score! Conquering this one mile was a milestone in her running career! Amazingly, Coach Pitts’ positive recognition installed an enormous sense of achievement into her heart. Enthusiastic cheers and thunderous applauses from her classmates kept her on the top of the world. Breathless and exhausted, she realized that overcoming seemingly the toughest challenges just needed a smart strategy like her mind trick. Her initial self-doubt gave way to self-confidence. Being a freshman, she tended to get lost in the 6-story maze, leaving her so helpless. Staring at the towering teaching building, Eva came up with a good idea, with a smile blooming across her face. Eva decided to use the same trick to deal with the school building. No sooner had she returned to the confusing maze than she set out to explore the first floor. Convinced that her mind trick would locate her in the school as soon as possible, she came to a gym, which was well-equipped with various workout facilities. Next to the gym was a cafeteria, which provided a wide range of foods and drinks. As Eva walked back to her classroom, she noticed that she felt less overwhelmed by this huge complex. Time ticking away, Eva eventually got familiar with the vast maze in the way she finished the one-mile run. One lap at a time did work! So did one floor a week! It dawned on her that goals are easier to achieve in small steps. 词汇激活 行为类 ①意识到:realize/be aware ②克服:overcome/get over ③开始做:set out to do/set about doing 情绪类 ①自信的:self-confidence/self-faith ②无助的:helpless/powerless 【点睛】[高分句型1] Never in her wildest dream had she imagined that she could achieve such an eye-catching score!(由连接词that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] No sooner had she returned to the confusing maze than she set out to explore the first floor.
